Hanabi was silent for a moment. When she spoke again her tone had softened, though it still carried that younger-sister bluntness. "You’ve been following him a lot lately. More than before. I don’t know what changed, but... just be careful. I’ll make sure no one finds out he’s here. Take care of him."

Soft footsteps retreated. The room settled into quiet.

Kael kept his eyes closed and his breathing even. He felt the mattress dip as Hinata lay down beside him. A hesitant hand came to rest over his heart.

"I’m sorry, Naruto," she whispered. The words were thick. "If I had never followed you, none of this would have happened." She drew a shaky breath. A tear landed on his shoulder, then another. Her voice broke completely.

Kael opened his eyes. In one smooth motion he turned, wrapped both arms around her, and rolled so she lay beneath him. Hinata’s pale eyes went wide.

"You idiot," he said softly, brushing damp strands of hair from her cheek. "Do you know how much I missed you? Why did you hide from me?"

She stared up at him, lips parted. "N-Naruto... you... you heard everything?"

"Every word." He kissed the tear tracks on one cheek, then the other. "You’re mine. If you ever try to run from me again, I’ll be angry."

Her hands came up to rest lightly against his chest, fingers curling into the fabric of his shirt. "I thought you had forgotten about me..."

Kael’s mind flickered briefly to the soft, generous body he had claimed weeks ago—the way she had trembled and whispered his name—but he pushed the crude thought aside. What she needed right now was certainty.

"I could never forget you," he said, and meant it. "Seeing other women doesn’t mean I stop wanting you. You’re mine. Don’t ever forget that."

Hinata’s eyes filled again, but this time the tears were quieter. She buried her face against his collarbone.
