Chapter 75 -
Chapter 75: Chapter
Wenzhe stepped closer, his tall shadow completely blocking out the remaining light of the sunset. The anger in his eyes was thick and heavy, making Su Yueqing’s heart skip a beat.
"Why do you want Li Mei back so badly?" Wenzhe demanded, his deep voice dropping into a harsh, dangerous whisper. "Is something wrong with you, Su Yueqing? Most women would do absolutely anything to get rid of their husband’s mistresses. They would leave them to rot. Yet you... you are trying to force her back into my space!"
He clenched his fists at his sides, looking thoroughly insulted and frustrated.
"Do you think so poorly of me?" he continued, glare intensifying. "You think I am some weak man who loses his mind over a simple housemaid? You are her mistress, the Young Madame of this estate! If she is suspected of stealing, she deserves to be locked up and questioned. Yet here you are, plotting fake investigations just to push her back to me!"
Su Yueqing froze, her mind spinning in complete panic as she realized her "generous" plan had completely backfired.
[Why is he so mad?! Isn’t he supposed to love his white lotus?! I’m literally trying to give him his girlfriend back so they can live happily ever after! Why is he yelling at me?! Is he crazy?! Nine, help me, the male lead has totally broken character!]
Wenzhe heard her frantic internal screaming, and it only made his jaw tighten further. He didn’t want Li Mei after everything that she had done. It infuriated him that his wife was so eager to throw him into another woman’s arms just to "wrap up a storyline."
"Answer me, Yueqing," Wenzhe commanded, stepping even closer until she was nearly backed up against the edge of the cliff. "Why are you so desperate to push another woman into my bed?"
Su Yueqing’s panic instantly flipped into pure, defensive anger. She was tired of being yelled at for trying to be helpful, and she completely snapped, stepping forward to push against his hard chest.
"Why are you yelling at me?!" she shouted back, her voice echoing over the quiet cliff. "Don’t act like I am the one committing a crime here! Didn’t you love her? You’re the one who chose to care about her in the first place, not me! I didn’t force you to do anything!"
She threw her hands up in the air, her face flushed with genuine irritation as she let out all her frustration.
"I just don’t care, Wenzhe! I don’t care which woman you choose to be with!" she yelled openly. "Honestly, I would prefer it if you had as many women as you wanted! Take ten mistresses! Take twenty! Go populate an entire pavilion with them and leave me completely alone!"
Right on cue, her inner mind roared in total agreement, blasting her true motives directly into Wenzhe’s head with high-volume irritation.
[Exactly! Go play around with your harem and leave me out of it!] Su Yueqing’s internal voice hissed angrily.
[I am a villainess! I have a system dashboard to manage, a sick kid’s health to fix, and an entire life to live without worrying about your relationship drama! If you’re busy with your little lotus, you won’t have time to notice me breaking character or ruining my villain points! Just take her back and give me some peace and quiet!]
Wenzhe stood completely frozen, his breath catching in his throat as her loud, unfiltered words both spoken and unspoken hit him all at once. The anger in his eyes slowly turned into absolute disbelief as he stared down at her panting, furious figure.
Wenzhe’s eyes narrowed into sharp slits, his pride completely stung by her words. "You are a terrible wife," he muttered, his voice dropping into a harsh, cold line. "No proper noblewoman would casually throw her husband to other women just to get some peace and quiet."
"Oh, really?" Su Yueqing shot back instantly, crossing her arms and leaning forward aggressively. "And aren’t you also a terrible husband? You drag me out here on a terrifying, bouncy horse ride, scream at me for trying to be flexible, and act like a moody tyrant because I’m not playing the jealous housewife! We are a perfect match in hell, Wenzhe!"
"Hmph!" Wenzhe scoffed loudly, his face darkening.
"Hmph!" Su Yueqing mimicked, throwing her nose in the air.
With matching, furious movements, they both turned around sharply, stomping a step away and turning their backs to one another. Su Yueqing stared angrily at the white horse, while Wenzhe glared at the distant mountains, their arms crossed tightly over their chests.
For a solid thirty seconds, the only sound on the cliff was the rustling of the wind through the grass and the distant chirping of birds.
Then, the sudden silence hit them.
The heavy, dramatic anger started to drain away, leaving behind a sudden, awkward wave of clarity. Wenzhe’s shoulders stiffened as he realized what had just happened. He was the feared, respected leader of the Xi estate, a tactical genius who handled high-level political threats without blinking—and he had just been standing on a cliff side, yelling at the top of his lungs like a petty toddler.
At the same time, Su Yueqing’s inner mind went completely blank before erupting into a wave of sheer embarrassment.
[Oh my god...] her inner thoughts groaned, burying her face in her mental hands right in Wenzhe’s brain. [What am I doing? I am an adult woman with a literal sci-fi system dashboard, and I just had a screaming match with a fictional character over a harem. We sound like two children fighting over a toy on a playground. This is so embarrassing. My dignity is completely gone.]
Wenzhe’s lips twitched. The dark anger completely vanished from his face, replaced by a sudden, overwhelming urge to laugh. He rubbed his temples, staring at the grass and wondering how a simple horse ride had turned into a childish shouting match.
The awkward silence on the cliffside didn’t last long.
Before either of them could turn around, the quiet evening air was shattered by the sharp clanging of metal and the frantic thud of heavy footsteps rushing up the forest pathway.
"Assassins! Protect the Young Master and Young Madame!"
"Assassins!"
The panicked shouts of the estate guards echoed loudly through the trees, instantly breaking the tension between the married couple.
Su Yueqing’s eyes went wide, and her body froze in place as the sounds of fighting drew closer.
[WHAT?! ASSASSINS?!] her inner voice shrieked in total horror, her mental panic flaring up like a siren inside Wenzhe’s head. [Are you kidding me?! I haven’t even fixed the kid’s lungs or earned my villain points back, and now we’re getting ambushed?! Nine, is this a scripted event?! I don’t know how to fight! I’m just a textbook villainess, not a martial arts master!]
Wenzhe didn’t waste a single second. The childish amusement completely vanished from his face, replaced by a cold, lethal seriousness. Hearing her terrified thoughts, he moved with blinding speed, stepping across the grass and grabbing Su Yueqing’s arm to pull her securely behind his broad back.
His hand went straight to the hilt of his sword, his dark eyes narrowing as he scanned the edge of the forest. The trees rustled violently, and several dark figures dressed in black cloaks burst into the open clearing, weapons drawn and gleaming dangerously in the dying light of the sunset.
From the depths of her mind, a cold, mechanical ping finally echoed, breaking through her sheer panic.
[System online,] Nine’s voice rang out inside her head, completely detached and professional. [Calm down, Host. This is a scripted minor ambush from the original novel. It was meant to show off the male lead’s combat skills.]
[Show off?!] Su Yueqing shrieked back mentally, holding onto Wenzhe’s tunic as he stood like a solid shield in front of her. [Nine, look at those swords! They are real metal! One bad move and I’m going to be a beautifully dressed corpse in a crimson cloak! Why didn’t you give me a warning?!]
[The system does not predict random combat encounters unless they directly alter the main plot’s ending,] Nine explained smoothly. [Furthermore, as the main villainess, your current role is to act arrogant and completely unafraid. If you cry or hide like a helpless maiden, your villain points will be deducted.]
[Are you insane?!] Su Yueqing’s inner voice wailed, while outwardly she forced her eyes to narrow into a cold, haughty glare at the approaching assassins. [I am terrified! My knees are shaking! If I try to act arrogant, I might trip over my own boots! Can I buy a shield or a temporary martial arts skill from the store?!]
[Checking store inventory...] Nine paused for a brief second. [Apologies, Host. Your current favorability rating with the Male Lead has thrown off the system points balance. You do not have enough negative villain points to purchase high-tier combat skills.]
[I hate this system!] Su Yueqing cursed internally, her mental screaming giving Wenzhe a massive headache as he pulled his gleaming sword from its sheath. [Fine! If I die here, I’m haunting you first, Nine!]
[Noted,] Nine replied calmly. [Good luck, Host. Please maintain your haughty expression. The male lead is currently moving to strike.]
