Chapter 503: A Chance to Prove Himself
Chapter 503: Chapter 503: A Chance to Prove Himself
Under the gaze of everyone present, it didn’t take Luca long to kill the first dragonborn assassin he encountered. After that, guided swiftly by the soldiers, he wiped out every remaining dragonborn assassin one by one.
By now, a faint glimmer of light had appeared at the edge of the sky.
He had spent nearly the entire night exterminating every last assassin.
But to him—and to the Black Forest Camp—it was worth it.
For Luca, it was a moment to prove his formidable strength.
He had also earned the soldiers’ heartfelt respect, and he knew very well that during the battle, the camp’s senior officers had to have been watching.
He was certain those high-ranking officers would be pleased with his performance.
For the Black Forest Camp, the complete elimination of the dragonborn assassins meant they wouldn’t face any major threats again for some time.
Dragonborn assassins were far from common within the Dragon King’s ranks.
Each one required a long period of training before they could be deployed.
For the Dragon King to send out so many dragonborn assassins at once was no easy feat in itself.
Amid the soldiers’ cheers, Luca soon spotted Lucas walking toward him—surrounded by several unfamiliar faces.
He immediately recognized that the people around Lucas were the camp’s senior officers.
At the forefront strode the Bloody Knight, Anwar.
When he reached Luca, he smiled and patted him on the shoulder.
“Excellent work! Your name is Cole, isn’t it? Your captain, Lucas, always speaks highly of your abilities.
I had some doubts before, but after seeing your performance just now, I recognize your strength as well.
I believe you’re qualified to take on even more dangerous missions.”
As he spoke, the Bloody Knight Anwar kept studying Luca from head to toe.
He was trying to discern some hidden clue.
But in the end, he found nothing unusual.
That left two possibilities.
The first, of course, was that Luca truly had no other secrets—but even Anwar himself found that hard to believe.
He believed far more in the second possibility—that the secrets hidden within Luca ran very, very deep.
Facing the Bloody Knight Anwar’s praise, Luca smiled and said,
“If you need me to carry out a more dangerous mission, of course I can do it. But I would still prefer to take on relatively safer tasks.”
“You’re far too modest! Your strength is already enough to handle dangerous missions on your own. And as it happens, I have just such a dangerous mission for you to undertake.”
The Bloody Knight Anwar wasn’t about to waste words with Luca.
He really did have a dangerous mission that required Luca’s immediate attention.
And for the entire Black Forest Camp, this mission was of critical importance.
The smile on Luca’s face quickly faded.
In a solemn tone he said, “If this mission is truly important, I’m willing to carry it out.”
“Excellent!” The smile on Anwar’s face grew even brighter. He patted Luca on the shoulder, then turned his head to address the officers behind him.
“All of you should learn from Cole. I genuinely look forward to the day when every one of you can undertake extremely dangerous missions on your own.”
With those words, Anwar simply took hold of Luca and led him away, leaving Lucas and the other officers standing where they were.
The officers couldn’t help feeling a little dissatisfied with the Bloody Knight Anwar’s behavior.
Dragon-Slayer Bales, staring at the retreating backs of Luca and Anwar, said discontentedly,
“We’re all geniuses too! We all rose up from being ordinary soldiers. Has the Bloody Knight started looking down on us? Or is he just looking too highly upon this Cole fellow?”
As he spoke, he turned his eyes toward Lucas.
“Is there anything about Cole you haven’t told us? Why does the Bloody Knight value him so much? There must be some hidden secret about him.”
Faced with Bales’s question, Lucas frowned in thought for a moment before shaking his head.
“I’ve already said everything that should be said. I also think Cole must have some secret. But either he’s hidden it extremely well—or even he himself doesn’t know about it.”
Lucas had put it as plainly as he could.
Naturally, the others stopped pressing him.
Although the officers were still somewhat unhappy, they each returned to their own quarters.
After all, they still had a mountain of things to deal with.
Although Luca had wiped out all the dragonborn assassins, he certainly hadn’t repaired all the damage they’d caused.
The officers still needed to hurry back to their own camps and handle every bit of destruction left behind by the dragonborn assassins.
As for Luca, he followed silently behind the Bloody Knight Anwar.
The two of them moved in single file toward the central building of the camp.
During this time, both Luca and Sophia kept observing the Bloody Knight.
They were trying to gauge Anwar’s true strength, but in the end, neither of them could get a clear read on him. The man seemed to be hiding his power.
“You’ve been sizing me up this whole time. Have you figured anything out?”
The Bloody Knight Anwar suddenly turned his head and looked at Luca with a smile as he asked.
Luca shook his head.
“I have indeed been observing you, but I haven’t been able to determine just how powerful you really are. Perhaps it’s because my own strength isn’t enough yet.”
He chose to tell the truth.
After all, without knowing the other man’s true power, it was safer to take a cautious approach.
At least so far, the Bloody Knight Anwar hadn’t shown any overt hostility.
And he even seemed to want to make use of Luca.
In that situation, there was no reason for Luca to lie.
The Bloody Knight Anwar chuckled and turned back around.
The two continued forward like that.
A quarter of an hour later, they finally entered the building.
Led by the Bloody Knight Anwar, they went deep along a dark tunnel into the underground of the structure.
When they reached the deepest point of the building, Anwar finally stopped.
The place they now stood in appeared to be an abandoned hall.
The hall was completely empty. Aside from the dust on the floor, there was nothing else at all.
“Do you know why I brought you here?”
The Bloody Knight Anwar lowered his voice as he asked Luca.
Luca shook his head.
By now, he was already prepared for a fight.
Anwar’s behavior had been far too strange, and Luca feared the man might use this opportunity to launch an attack on him.
Of course, the Bloody Knight Anwar had also noticed what Luca was thinking.
He smiled and shook his head.
“Young man, don’t be so tense. If I truly wanted to strike at you, I wouldn’t need to bring you here. Your strength may be considerable, but I’m still capable of killing you in front of everyone.”
He paused for a moment, as though collecting his thoughts.
“I brought you here to give you a chance to prove your strength. You discovered clues related to the Goddess of the Night in the abandoned manor. That means you’re qualified to meet the Crimson King.
However, before you have an audience with His Excellency the Crimson King, you must prove your own power. And the way to do that is by completing the high-difficulty mission I’m about to assign you.”
The Bloody Knight Anwar spoke slowly, his eyes fixed on Luca.
During the whole exchange, he didn’t notice any great shift in Luca’s expression.
That only raised his estimation of Luca further.
In reality, all of this was an act on Luca’s part.
When he heard Anwar mention the qualification to meet the Crimson King, he had been inwardly thrilled.
But he had hidden his emotions well.
“If you choose to refuse, I won’t force you,” Anwar continued. “This mission is indeed extremely dangerous, and you’ll have to carry it out alone. You cannot receive help from anyone else.
Make your decision now.”
With that, the Bloody Knight Anwar fixed his gaze squarely on Luca.
Luca pretended to think for a moment.
“I’m willing to accept this mission. And I also hope to have the opportunity to have an audience with the Crimson King.”
“Excellent!”
Once again a smile spread across the Bloody Knight Anwar’s face.
He had been worried Luca might refuse.
Now that Luca had agreed, he could, as a matter of course, reveal all the intelligence related to the mission.
“The mission you’re about to undertake is to wipe out all of the Dragon King’s lackeys around the Black Forest Camp.
The Dragon King’s subordinates have a secret base not far from the camp.
I’ve long known of this base’s existence, but I’ve never been able to confirm its exact location.
Your task is to find this secret base and destroy it.”
“The mission is both dangerous and highly difficult, but I believe you can accomplish it. I’ll hand over all the relevant information to you. You’d better finish your preparations within two days.”
With that, the Crimson Knight Anwar shoved a thick stack of documents into Luca’s hands.
Luca would have to read through all of the material within two days and make his preparations.
Then, in the shortest possible time, he would need to eliminate the Dragon King’s subordinates’ secret base.
