It felt as though the ship(The Moby Dick ) could capsize at any moment.

The crew’s faces turned pale.

Some of the more timid sailors fainted on the spot.

Fortunately, their companions grabbed hold of them in time.

Otherwise, they would have been thrown into the raging sea below, where their fate would have been uncertain.
