On Astral Tides: From Humble Freelancer To Astral Emperor

Six Hundred And Fifty-Eight – Contains Status – Akio 23, Haru 4

“Your elemental Skills have been influenced by your position as Directions. let me try and dig out the relevant info…” my Eyes glowed amber. “…Okay, we don’t need the basics. Hmm…”

Spring East Wood Manipulation taps into natural energies and Wood Elemental energies from the Path Of The Five Symbolic Elements, allowing greater control, precision and strength of Wood Element, and fortifying the manipulated Element…

Sacral Chakra Of Winter Water is enhanced by the Water Elemental energies of the Path Of The Five Symbolic Elements, and Water Element generated is purer and recovers more quickly. In addition, affinity for Water Element increases significantly…

“Basically, you get a bonus to purity, strength, recovery and control with the element of your Direction. It’s not bad, not bad at all.” I approved. “Oh, and your part of the Lost Droplet has loosened Haanōbō, mine too, it feels a bit softer, less impervious to being absorbed, but… I think it’ll still be a work in progress to unlock.”

She nodded slowly. “I cannot be too displeased. I had not expected such a boon in strength from Wise Genbu. And perhaps… it shall not take me as long as you imagine?” She tilted her head, golden-yellow eyes peering at me from behind her mask.

“I like confidence.” Rose agreed, a smile on her illusionary face. “But the Lost Droplet, gift from the Divine Norns as price for Akio’s triumph in their three challenges, even separated as it is into many parts, won’t be easily attainted, I suspect.”

Arangbō was laughing loudly, teasing his sister. “Well, Winter North. You may have a way with water, but is your sudden confidence a way to impress him? Was not the ceremony enough for you?”

“All right, that’s enough of that.” I decided to step in to spare Haanōbō’s blushes, as her wings and head were dipping, leaving her staring at the ground, and I didn’t like to see that. “A little humour is good, but… don’t go too far, okay?”

“Oh, yes, I would hate for you to fight another duel with me for such a reason, little brother.” he snorted. “Though I am strong, I have not seen your Status, as you call it, yet, and you are far mightier than you were. I am not one for needless humiliation.”

“Great. In that case… Tengu Winged Fighting Stance is fairly prosaic. It gives bonuses to stability, flight speed and turning arcs, as well as an improved ability to hover, and it mitigates the disadvantages of using bows and other such weapons while airborne. I wonder… she’s no Tengu, but Eri’s learning to mimic your wings…?”

“I shall endeavour to teach her.” Haanōbō promised, and I nodded, grateful.

“Thanks. One Skill that is more interesting is Arangbō’s Wood Staff Technique. At first glance it doesn’t seem too unusual, rather similar to ordinary elemental weapon Skills, but… this line stood out. When using a staff constructed largely of wood, the affinity for Wood Elemental energies of the weapon is magnified immensely, and the weapon can naturally be regenerated and repaired, and can sprout vines, roots and even harden itself with a tough, bark-like armour. Reminds me of our brawl. But yeah, I guess certain weapons really have affinity with matching elements.”

What do you think, Motoko, Natsumi?

It is an interesting speculation. We already know the efficacy of wind element with bows… Motoko’s thoughts responded. …yet it is certainly not so pronounced as that. Yet Tsumura Arts, and now our Style, specialises in such, so… we will experiment until we find out the perfect combinations.

Maybe metal element? Or honestly, wood might work with bows. Our bow, Hebihikoukiba, which you still have to duplicate for us, as you did Utsuroihebi … no rush, no rush at all… Natsumi’s gentle teasing amused me, but it was true, I did have to find time to do what I’d done for the sword, to their spear and bow as well, but it was certainly a pressuring thought, handling their treasures so. I did it before, so I’ll succeed again. If I fail, well, I’m already sharing my life with the pair of them, so it’s not like I won’t be taking responsibility.

…is made of the finest wood, reinforced by lost methods of craftsmanship. So perhaps instead of wind…

Yes. Motoko agreed, excited. Wood element, metal element… I can see we have much to learn yet, Natsumi. Self-improvement never ends!

As the two of them chattered happily in all our minds, I turned my attention to the remaining Skills of note. Onmyōdō Talismans and Yin And Yang Formations were effectively Cultivation Skills, though they were designed to be activated by other energies than Qi, though Qi could be used. It made sense there would be some similarities between them, and I suspected that the Six Great Noble Pursuits had a bit more universality than I imagined.

I agree. It was Daiyu’s turn to speak up in our minds now. Onmyōdō and their Arts likely share a common root. I believe that many Chinese practitioners of Taoism and likely even Cultivation were amongst the first Onmyōji in these lands. And assuming a wider, multiversal standing… Cultivation and Onmyōdō likely have many of the same influences. The five elements, Yin and Yang… too much is alike to be purely coincidental, and the fact that the Four Auspicious Beasts have identities unique to a number of related Pantheons… it is indicative, I would say with confidence.

The other Skill, Feng Shui Geomancy, which Arangbō possessed, was the ability to use the Five Symbolic Elements, as well as Yin and Yang, to manipulate an area, to create a desired effect through attraction and opposition of forces, though Arangbō freely admitted that Shungbō had been far better at it than he was. Still, it shared aspects of both Divination and Formations from the Six Noble Pursuits, reinforcing Daiyu’s speculation.

“Anyway, that’s pretty much everything of relevance.” I grinned. “I’m impressed at your breadth of Skills, Arangbō. Even if you’re weaker than Grulgor in raw combat might, he might struggle to overcome your array of potential tricks, if you use them properly.”

“I would rather battle him than you. I do not enjoy the dirt…” he sighed, and Haru pointed out that fighting Grulgor, with his ability to become one with rock, stone and mud, was a near-certain guarantee of getting filthy. As Arangbō conceded the point, I clapped my hands, drawing everyone’s attention again.

“Anyway, Now we’ve looked at your stats, time to check mine out. Try not to be jealous, Arangbō.” I couldn’t resist a teasing dig at the burly Tengu, but it was my sis who spoke, exchanging a knowing glance with Haru.

“It’s not just bigger brother Tengu…” I couldn’t help but feel the nickname my sis gave Arangbō was subtly insulting, but then, that was just how my sis was sometimes. “…who gets jealous. My bro has a habit of making the rest of us look bad!”

“The way to look at is it…” Haru was as diplomatic as ever. “…Akio had a lot of advantages you didn’t, Aiko-chan. But yes, he certainly is the role model we should all emulate. In his proclivities for training, not relationships, of course.”

“Though Hyacinth…” I was vaguely embarrassed by their praise, even with the subtle envy implied, and Haru’s playful dig at me. “…might have a chance to catch me up. What with all the remnant energy at the Kamuy massacre site on Rebun Island for her to work through. And you can never count out Shaeula!”

“Advantages?” Lin and Rose’s simulacrum images exchanged a wry glance. “If anything, Akio was disadvantaged, compared to his peers. But only from the most fertile soil can a mighty tree sprout, and… only truly blank paper can be coloured with any desired image.”

“Asha would like the tree metaphor.” I chuckled. “Anyway, I couldn’t have done it alone. Without Shaeula, I’d never have grown as strong as I did, and… you’ve all helped me along the way.” I glanced at the silent, slightly misshapen golden statue of the Yellow Dragon. “Now… they’ve helped us too, and while I won’t do anything against my conscience, they’ve earned my aid in the future. But… enough stalling. Want a handkerchief to bite, sis?” I joked, and she gave me a flat, blue-eyed stare.

“I think I’ll cope. Best get it over with, bro. Looks like your two… local wives… want to get the details in person, or as close as this is, I guess, rather than just via your thoughts.”

“Where did you learn that expression?” I asked, as Rose and Lin smiled gently. “It’s not a good term…”

“Yeah, maybe I shouldn’t be rude to the Valkyries, but you, bro, you deserve it.” My sis crossed her arms again, this time in what seemed like annoyance or jealousy, rather than defensiveness. “Wow, it’s crazy. I was super happy at my growth a few minutes ago, but now I know you’re about to make me look pathetic, all of a sudden I don’t feel so special.”

I was about to reach out and comfort my sis, but Haanōbō beat me to it. “If I am not mistaken, you have only been involved for a short time. It is natural you are behind, but your rate of growth is truly amazing, Autumn West. If anyone should be ashamed, it is I, for I have lived and trained upon this mountain for many…” She paused, wings drooping, yellow-gold eyes narrowing for a moment. “…for some few years… and my strength is no longer sufficient to protect the mountain and the Sacred Flame that is our charge.”

“Wow, guess even you Yōkai girls don’t like being seen as old. Or perhaps…?” I imagined her grin was teasing under her mask. “…it’s that you don’t want to look bad in front of our dear bro? Rank four…” my sis giggled again, and it was Eri who chimed in, her thoughts a little acerbic.

How soon you forget, Aiko. When your Lovers’ Link increased, you didn’t want us to tease you. It’s a little frustrating, but it’s fortunate…

Hey, don’t be like that, Eri! It’s a completely different situation! And what do you mean, ‘it’s fortunate’? Stop leaving ominous comments and trailing off meaningfully, it’s freaking me out!

As they bickered, and others laughed in my thoughts, Haru moderated it all with professional grace, which made me look forward to analysing her Statistics…

You shouldn’t let a woman know you’re looking forward to baring all her secrets, Akio. Haru’s amused voice came privately to me. Women like to retain an air of mystery, you know? Even dead ones like me. A woman is still a woman, even as a ghost…

My apologies, but…

I know, I know. That’s just the way you are, and it has brought us this far. Anyway… the suspense is quite irritating, and not just for me.

Okay, I’ll get on with it.

The bickering between my sis and Eri stopped too, as my Eyes glowed, and I began to read off my new and improved full Status.

As I continued to read, the silence became a little painful, and by the time I’d reached the end, I felt the hot stares of my sis and the Tengu burning into me. It was then that Lin spoke up, her tone rather wondering, faint ripples of aether and wind element carrying her voice to us.

“I am… very proud. Shocked, but still proud.” Indeed her tone carried such, and her thoughts that were passed to me through Rose also were tinged with great affection and pride. “If you could truly unlock your potential which is being suppressed, stabilise your League and Vessel, then you would certainly be the equal to many Foringi, Captains of the Einherjar. Perhaps not the legendary heroes who have led Those Who Fight Alone for many centuries, but… you would still definitely have a place amongst them. Your individual areas of strength are still lacking, but… your breadth of powerful abilities is shocking, and some of them seem to possess power…” Foehn flickered on her hands, just an image of it, rather than it being present here, of course, but even through the rippling illusory double, we could feel its rapacious hunger, stronger than ever now. “…which is worthy of even us. The Foehn grows stronger, it has absorbed much from the Path Of The Five Symbolic Elements, I can feel its purity has greatly increased.”

I nodded, and raising one finger, a tiny flicker of the rippling flame appeared, bobbing and twitching as if caught in a swirling breeze, despite the still air within this sacred space. “Yes, Foehn’s constantly been feasting recently, but… a fair portion of Suzaku’s power that flowed into me ended up nurturing Foehn too. Anyway, yes, I do have a wide array of Skills. Though I’m feeling the pressure. Literally.”

“Of course you would.” Rose chuckled, her image peering up at me, and from that angle the illusion was… striking. Yeah, still ignoring those sharpening gazes… “There are certainly limits to what one can contain. Vessels have their ceilings. Obviously, through time, hard training, opportunities, Favours, some systematic methods, such as the Six Paths and their Cultivation… fortunate opportunities…” Her pearlescent eyes shone with mirth, as she idly wound one hand through her long, pinkish hair, twisting the strands as though weaving a cloth. “…the Vessel strengthens and expands. Paired with a mighty League, and indeed the limits recede. But… for you to so quickly amass an array of wonderful Skills, and more…” She winked at my sis, who grinned shyly, her good humour restored.

“…it seems those around you are making the most of their Vessels as well. It is a fascinating thing to witness.” Her Eye glowed a faint amber. “I have been using this gift. Obviously we have methods of assessing the efficacy of Skills and other advantages in the Pantheons. We are hardly so foolish as to not try and improve. But… the sheer clarity of these methods definitely speaks of Wisdom.” She giggled girlishly, suiting her height and somewhat younger features than her youngest sister possessed. “I have analysed Lin and my other sisters, and we have developed a training plan. You know, it is even possible to pick up the minute traces of improvement and implement tailored methods to maximise that.”

I must have seemed interested, as Lin burst out laughing, though she quickly seemed embarrassed by that, covering her mouth with one hand until she composed herself. “My apologies.” she began. “I applaud your eagerness, my… my Verr.” Her cheeks had taken on a faint pinkish tone, a paler hue than her striking, metallic red hair. As Rose gazed on her younger sister with great affection, Lin gathered her words, explaining what was on her mind.

“I do not know whether the effect of the Seeds are to blame, or it is your own efforts, or more likely, a combination of both factors, and perhaps other related circumstances, but you have amassed strength which would not… not shame us, when you are revealed to the World Tree and Proud Sigrún, and all our many older sisters.”

“Of course…” Rose chortled. “…Lin would much prefer were you to ascend in a blaze of glory and power, as Astral Emperor, but…” her expression was now solemn. “…temper your expectations. Learning more about this world, it seems… unlikely. Though we have not come this far by forcing you to follow an existing path. It is just… we would hate for you to perish, especially now.”

“If I may…” Haru spoke up. “Just why is the situation different now? You seemed confident in Akio beforehand, and even Goddess Taṇhā has great expectations of Akio. If you could explain, if you can, it would help us make informed decisions. I too… and I am not alone in this, would not like to see Akio die for nothing.”

My sis, Haanōbō and even Tarōbō and Arangbō nodded, agreeing. Well, I suppose now it’s not just ceremonial, we’re related by more than my trial by combat for Haanōbō’s hand… as my sister, of course!

“It is hardly a matter of secrecy.” Lin shrugged. “It is more that since we are not Astral Empresses ourselves, we cannot know the deeper secrets. Yet…”

“Have you ever wondered why the Pantheons have numberless worlds, but Astral Emperors are so rare, only the barest fraction of those worlds so commanded?” Rose asked. At my keen, inquisitive grey gaze, she smiled. “It is simple. If a world has its Boundary dissipate, then too long passes, for some reason, all who attempt to claim it fail. Not all perish, but even those who survive are… changed. Not themselves, and… weaker than before, often significantly, their spirits disarrayed, even their Truesouls… different. Also, worlds that have experienced significant… depopulations… of powerful beings are likewise significantly harder to claim, often with lethal consequences again.”

“And this world… if this, for some reason, is a second Boundary phase, then… it surely meets both of those troubling criteria.” Lin finished. “There are other situations when worlds become untenable to claim, but those are not relevant right now. We would… not have you perish, doing the impossible.”

“I get that…” my sis spoke up before I could. “…but isn’t doing the impossible kind of my bro’s style right now? Besides, nobody knows why everyone fails, do they?”

Rose shook her head. “No, because those who succeed will never speak of it, and those that don’t either die or are too… impaired… to be lucid on the matter. But… even Gods have tried to claim worlds that the Pantheons take in without an Astral Emperor, and they too have suffered the same fates. Therefore, we allow the ownerless worlds to remain uncontested, simply as part of the Pantheon’s wider Territories. After all, even without an Astral Emperor, a world still teems with life, offers rich resources, habitable lands, and many opportunities.”

“I see.” I nodded. “I’ll be careful then, but… Astral Emperor or not, I’ll be the first to Rank Five at least, and go from there. Worst case, if we have numerous Rank Fives covering the whole Earth, we can protect it, even when the Boundary shatters.”

“Ambitious.” Rose chuckled, and Lin rolled her eyes, a surprisingly animated gesture for the more stoic Valkyrie sister.

“You are a fine one to preach. Have you not been sounding out some of the older sisters from prior generations of Valkyries, seeing which of those would be safe to bring into our confidence, without getting us in terrible trouble?”

“Of course. I want to compare using my Eye and help us reach their level as soon as possible. After all, while we can hardly fault your pace…” Rose addressed me. “…time marches on, and… the situation amongst the Pantheons shows no sign of improvement, only a slow, steady worsening. But it is like a creaking dam. It holds back the ocean, only trickles leaking through, but… all it takes is a single breach, and the pressure can shatter the entire structure, ending the world in flood.”

“I don’t know if Earth and those of us on it can make a difference…” I remembered Verðandi’s trial, and the horrors of the strange beasts which had even slain Valkyries. “…but we’ll do our best to arrive in a… timely… manner, if only to spare my back the sting of the lash.” I winked playfully. “Anyway, thanks, that was enlightening, and I’ll definitely seek counsel before I attempt to become Astral Emperor. But that’s still for future us to worry about. Now… let’s continue.”

I checked the other interesting updates to my Status.

Quenched By Flame, Compressed By Connections is a Unique Class formed the Classes Mortal Spark and Divine Adherent, as you have chosen neither way, yet… still embody many of the aspects of both, and have had the aid of both a truly Divine Being, satisfying the nature of a Divine Adherent, as well as Kindled a temporary Spark of Divine Flame, embracing the nature of a Mortal Spark.

Combined with the nature of your Path, this Class is the first Class your embryonic Path has formed, and the power of the Path embraces and bolsters you. This Class is designed not merely to fortify your Vessel, though it certainly does. Resilience, Fortitude and Determination increase massively, and your Spirit and Truesoul become resistant to both internal and external pressures.

It also, perhaps might be one road to releasing your true potential, unfettered by any Bonds of Obligation you do not choose, for the Connections you have crafted and shared through this Path, without which the Class would not exist and would not function, are a stabilising influence, and a burden shared is not merely a burden lessened, but sometimes amplified, yet within such increased strain often times coal can be forged into diamond, and beyond, should it not shatter.

“That would explain your stupid jump in some of your stats, bro.” my sis observed. “Wow, I totally want it.”

“You aren’t alone in that.” Rose nodded firmly. “I would desire it too, but… I fear we are past the stage we could replicate what Akio did. We have already ignited and grown our Divine Flames.”

“More to the point… it said that the Path created the Class. Does that… hold true for all Classes?” Haru asked the question I was going to. Oh come now, Akio. I may be undersecretary to Morita-sama, but really, I’m like Karen-chan, and I’m your employee. We spend a lot of time together, and like all excellent bureaucrats, I’m efficient at anticipating your needs, and could do with a pay rise and some holiday entitlement. You have the added bonus you can’t even work me to death! No Karoshi for me, it’s not like I can be double dead, is it?

Yes, don’t worry, I’ll ensure you have plenty of breaks when the rush is over! And if you want money, just ask Hinata and she’ll cut you a cheque!

I’ve heard that before. I’ll believe I get a break when I see it, and while Hinata would certainly pay me what I asked for, she would also expect me to deliver results worth the expense. Anyway…

Rose and Lin were waiting to answer, their images breaking down more and more, as the strain was starting to tell. “Let’s finish this up.” Rose advised. “Please do bear in mind that while we are well-learned and wise, we are still young. In the bloom of our youth, dear Verr.” She smiled at me with quite the intensity, as if willing me to believe that. Which I do, don’t worry! You’re both very young and wonderful Brúðr, I’m certain of it!

“Also, the way you describe Classes is a little strange. It might be an artefact of this world’s way of thinking, or perhaps yours. Honestly, I was influenced by you a little when I first arrived. I granted you access to a little of my knowledge, through the Seeds, and it fed back to me.” Lin explained. “Hence why I was able to explain to you about Levels and Statistics. It is hardly like we do not know of such, but… while it is self-evident that training increases one’s Might and Fortitude, or learning more of how to master the intricacies of the power of the Astral will grant one greater Aether…  we are more interested in the process, rather than the definition.”

“Exactly.” Rose agreed. “We roughly assess Skill Ranks, as do other Pantheons, via systems gauging their proficiency. It is comparable, yet your method, coupled with Yggdrasil’s insight, has far more flexibility and precision. But for Classes… of course we know of their existence, in a somewhat more abstract way. Learning a set of elements naturally increases one’s regeneration and control of such, and the effect grows the more one masters the elements involved, until a certain point, when the gains taper off. A maxed out Class, as you no doubt would say. The training fields and warrior halls have such knowledge, so… training plans are devised and honed over the millennia. There are certainly special examples.”

Cultivation. Daiyu, who had been listening, chimed in. It is a systematic, nested sequence of Classes and Skills.

“Exactly.” Rose agreed. “The Six Paths are the foundation of such, so it is not wrong to claim they come from a Path, surely.”

“There are other examples too.” Lin agreed. “Saints, not to be confused with Cultivator Saints, Daiyu…” Lin clarified with a faint smile. “I mean those from the Ninth Heaven, as well as their Paladins, Martyrs and others, are all trained en masse and… perhaps you would say, in your terms, as if on a production line. Those are clearly Classes. There are numerous such examples, and doubtless many more lie undiscovered. We cannot say for certain all Classes are spun from Paths, yet…”

“…many definitely are.” Rose agreed. “Perhaps most. I could ask around, research more tomes and dusty ancient books, but… if I am too idle, or too inquisitive, the older sisters will come asking questions we don’t want to face yet.”

“I see.” Haru answered for me. “Even without being certain, your insights are still valuable, and align with what we have done here, such as the Pilgrimage to gain Kami-Blessed. But we have the advantage in Akio’s Eyes.”

“We do.” I agreed. “And like Rose, we’ll maximise them. Hopefully next time it won’t take quite such a large-scale event as this though. Oh…” I suddenly had an idea. “…so that’s why all Classes increase League when they are done, huh? Because it’s taking a small part of the power of a Path and integrating it? If so… the Path that offers Conqueror must be special…”

“Indeed.” Rose nodded. “Now, I am curious about your Brilliant Scarlet Jade. Double-mutated advanced composite elements are rare.”

I nodded. “It’s basically a type of crystal element specialising in… oh, it’s easier if I fully explain it.” I could feel Daiyu listening in with deep approval as I explained.

Third Eye And Root Chakras Of Brilliant Scarlet Jade – The Third Eye and Root Chakras generate this potent Double-Mutated Elemental energy of Crystal nature. Jade is an Element of Emotion, Healing and Strength, and is extremely durable, while having many forms and colours. It shares the base properties of Crystal, in that the effects of Light Elemental energies can be solidified, and it is an excellent Element for both offence and defence. This Jade amplifies properties due to its Brilliant nature, and specialises in Jades of Red, Crimson, Scarlet and other similar shades, which allow greater imbuement of Yang energies and Positive Emotions and Karma, as well as strengthening effects and Earth Elemental endowments.

“As you can see, it’s more a buffing version of Jade, but still has a lot of positives. Most importantly, I can now run Blessing Of Indestructible Jade, and even though my reserves and control of the crystal element are lousy, with the nature of this particular mutated crystal, I can still stack up the buffs.” And I have a lot of boosts to elemental generation, and some of them should affect crystal element, because it’s a composite.

Yes, it is most admirable. I would dearly love to try and combine it with my already existing jade. Perhaps we should… Cultivate together… and make it work.

I don’t think that you need an excuse to Dual cultivate, Daiyu. Natsumi’s thoughts echoed teasingly, and Motoko agreed, though with a more practical thought.

Indeed, I am curious about Dual Cultivation. Since Natsumi, Eri and I are your disciples, Daiyu, it would be a grand time to learn further Techniques.

They are so brazen about their desires and ulterior motives, Bell! I’m not jealous at all.

Neither am I, Teare. Don’t worry, soon we’ll have our chance. I know all the most beautiful and peaceful spots in the Fae realms…

I shall ask around. Some of the Way-Wardens who have lovers will surely know the perfect places for outdoor dates…

As the Elves joined in, I held in a chuckle. Daiyu, Motoko, Natsumi, you don’t need a reason to ask for intimacy. Though… I admit I’d be curious to see if now we can absorb each other’s jade, so it’s worth a try.

I’m curious about why your new Class and Skill that we share are both stronger than mine.” From her tone Aiko was puffing out her cheeks behind the mask, as she cut short our mental conversation with her question. “And shouldn’t you have a Brother Of Autumn Class? Come on, even the multiverse is picking on me. Wow, I feel so sad.” She put her balled up fists to the eyeholes of her mask, as if pretending to cry.

“The first part is easy.” I shrugged. “I’ve got so many buffs to Bonds and Connections stacked, I’m not surprised they show greater effect with me. As for the lack of Class about you, dear sister… perhaps if I had Sister’s Bond it would show up. I reckon I could make that happen?”

My sis froze, before shaking her head. “Nope, not a good idea right now, bro. If you did that, everyone really would start calling you a siscon, as unlike Brother’s Bond, which…” her tone and gaze softened, and was more affectionate. “…I know you created to make me feel less stressed. Thanks bro. I may be a nuisance, but I’m always thankful. But…” she insisted. “…nobody will show you any mercy if you start rewriting the multiverse for me. Though maybe for Haanōbō, that would be okay?”

“Do not drag me into this.” she wisely demurred, dipping her head and white wings, violet hair fluttering as she backed off.

“Rewiring the multiverse, huh? It’s more… using the Path.” I mused. “That brings me to my Classes. Obviously Bondweaver and Taker Of Paths Unknown have both gained a few Levels. But Shaper Of Essences Both Base And Imperishable also increased when I wove the Connection through my Path, borrowing from Huánglóng’s Path. If we look at the description…”

Shaper Of Essences Both Base And Imperishable is a Class with the ability to manipulate, modify and repair both Material and Astral bodies, the Spirit and the Truesoul. and it allows one to partially perceive and understand the likely effects of performing Chirurgery or Healing upon such bodies, and allows finer control and manipulation of the Physical, Spiritual, and Truesoul constituents of those bodies as well as the Connectivity affecting such bodies, and the Bonds they share with others and the wider Multiverse.

Precision increases significantly, and as this Class grows, ability to control Ether, Aether, Adherence, Soullight, Bonds and Connections increases, and the ability to integrate these also improves as your Path grows.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if this is part of the Bondweaver Path now, as I gained two Levels during my efforts here.”

“It is a… dangerous… Class. Best keep this between us. If the Ninth Heaven, or certain other Pantheons found out…” Lin warned. “…they would not like the implications or your potential.”

“Indeed. It’s perhaps for the best that you are here, hidden away from prying eyes.” Rose agreed. “The Yellow Dragon and his followers will ponder what transpired here, but they won’t take action precipitously. A small faction such as they, navigating the wider pollical currents of the Pantheons… obviously they’re not prone to rashness. Even when they do act, the clear benefits are to try and get in early with support, secure a bigger slice of your cake, as it were.”

I smiled at that image, thinking of Keomi-chan, but I was listening earnestly.

“Whether you manage to become an Astral Emperor or not, you have value.” Lin insisted. “Perhaps it might not be as worthy as claiming a world, but… properly encouraged and supported, as a longer-term investment you might become equally as valuable. Your ability to nurture those around you, such as your sister, and even Rose and I… yes, your access to Seeds are limited, but even so, without them you work wonders… suffice it to say, losing their presence on this world will not sting them as much as it might have. After all, they have surely lost hope for it, to an extent.”

I nodded, understanding. “Yeah, I get it. Anyway, that’s basically me, barring the Tsumura Style I’ve gained. Oh, and the elemental boosts. I didn’t expect water element and my sacral Chakra to improve too, but I guess Genbu didn’t stint me. The Lost Droplet definitely feels softer within me, though I’m still a bit away from cracking it open and finding what secret strength lies inside. But maybe, with Shiro’s buffs again, as I wasn’t a world away from it last time… and now I’ll be stronger, more able to manipulate the element, and it’s been partially penetrated by Genbu… it’s worth another try.”

“Again, I would not hold out too much hope of an easy resolution.” Lin warned, and Rose nodded. “However, being bold, when it is not too dangerous, is admirable, and… we do approve.”

I smiled at their kind words. “Yeah, at least it’s only a matter of experimentation, or at worst, growing a little stronger and more skilled. So, I’ll get there, be it sooner or later. I daresay Daiyu, Shaeula, and you too, Haanōbō, will manage as well. I’m eager to see just how the Norns are rewarding us. Anyway, that’s me do, so let’s quickly check you out, Haru.”

“Fine.” she sighed, crossing her arms, though I thought I understood her well enough to know she was feigning exasperation. “You’re an inquisitive fellow, Akio. Not every woman likes that, so I’d say you’d be unpopular with the ladies, but… I’m not such a liar!” her smile was warm. “Go on then, peer into my secrets. Everyone here and connected through me can be trusted.”

“I’ll be quick, I promise!”

As my sis giggled, and joked that was the wrong thing to say, I scanned Haru, pleased at what my Eyes saw.

“Not bad.” I nodded, well satisfied. “You’ve worked hard, Haru.”

“I certainly have.” she tittered, her smile both gently mocking and knowing. “Though compared to you, it’s a different sort of work. Though I’ve done a little fighting too, I’ve not had much leisure for… grinding… as you put it.”

“I wouldn’t think so.” Now my sis was smiling too, judging by her voice. “You’re a proper career woman, Haru-chan, not like my bro, who’s just a training fanatic and a womaniser.”

“That’s a little harsh, Aiko-chan…” Haru defended me, and I was going to thank her, before she winked playfully. “He trains to womanise too, I’d say…”

“Thanks.” I managed dryly, knowing they were just joking, giddy at proof of their growth. It’s great to see Haru so positive. I really have overworked her, but while we’re in Britain for the Quest, she can take a short break. Unless Morita Yuna-san at the Ministry monopolises her, of course…

“It’s as we insisted.” Rose managed, though her voice was now cracking, and the illusions of her and Lin were almost entirely transparent, shimmering with fragmented static. “Your growth is unprecedented.”

Lin nodded. “Yes. Even though you are weak compared to the Einherjar and Foringi that make up the bulk of the World Tree’s vast armies, you have great utility, and…” The words were cut off as Lin’s simulacrum vanished with a popping burst of air and scattered aether which faded away like dying sparks.

“…she says you are a useful talent.” Rose’s image stabilised a little, the strain of projecting Lin now relinquished. “That was harder than I expected.” She mopped her brow, surely up in the higher Astral, her image merely mirroring the gesture cutely. “In fact, I’ll be returning now too. I have quite the fierce headache from overusing the Runes, but I’ll study them and grow stronger. Besides…” She glanced knowingly at the still, cold golden statue. “…our need to be here is done.” With that she vanished, her own illusory form shattering.

But I’m still always with you. At least now Lin might relent on nagging me unmercifully for a while now. Her thoughts echoed with a quiet giggle. Or perhaps it might stir her on to further demands. And I can see Run’s orange eyes sparkling with eager curiosity. Oh, my sisters will be the death of me…

I know you are pleased they rely on you. But yes, rest. You said your wounds worsened? We appreciated the help and advice, but… if you have to fight again soon, then please at least recover to the best condition you can. I wouldn’t like it if when we reached you, not all of you were there to greet us. After all, like my sis says, there are nine of you. If there aren’t nine, that’s no good!

Going for the clean sweep after all? How bold! How salacious! No, I know what you meant, and I’m just teasing. Yes, don’t worry about us. we must do our duty, but as the youngest nine, the others dote on us, so we receive the best attention and supplies, more than we merit, if I am being truthful. But… I am rather fatigued, so I shall go sleep. Goodnight, my sweet Verr.

Yes, rest well, my… dear Brúðr. Saying that still embarrassed me a little, but I was getting used to it now, and their affections.  My resistance to such has certainly been broken down recently. It’s only natural, I guess, I’m surrounded by adorable women. Keeping that thought to just myself, and the smiling Haru, I then communicated my last thoughts to Rose. Pass on my goodnight to Lin, and I suppose Run too, and the others. All of you, take care of yourselves, and don’t push yourselves too hard.

I think it quite ironic you saying that, Akio, but… we shall do our best.

As Rose fell silent, I turned my attention back to Haru, and Aiko let out a sigh mirrored by Haanōbō.

“Even as a fake presence, they were… intimidating.” Haanōbō muttered.

“Me, I was going to say they were gorgeous. My bro’s such a lucky bastard. Though he owes it all to me!” she puffed out her chest pridefully, standing tall. “I don’t like to brag, but if I hadn’t pushed Eri to accept reality, my bro would be a one woman man!”

“Perhaps that would have been better.” Arangbō boomed a laugh. “He is less likely to get stabbed that way. Or perhaps struck from an arrow from above…” He narrowed his eyes knowingly. “Regardless, I am curious. Do tell me more about the strength of young Haru.”

Young Haru?” she frowned, before smoothing her face back to a professional mask. “I am young, and also dead, so I won’t be getting any older!”

Does it work like that? Judging by her expression, I guess so.

“Yeah, there are a few points I’m curious about, bro. Like how she has Space Manipulation without the Chakra Skill?”

“Is that so strange?” Arangbō asked. “We have great familiarity with elemental abilities, even those not from our own Direction, though with some few exceptions, we merely wield them, not create such within us.”

“It’s… rarer for someone to pick it up quickly.” I clarified. “You’ve been studying for years. Haanōbō…” I smiled behind my mask. “…since she’s in the bloom of youth, must be very talented. Anyway, it reflects well on Haru, but…” I scanned her details, amber letters expanding in my vision. “…it’s actually all connected. Let me explain. First…”

Telepathic Relay is a Skill which is an advanced form of Telepathy, with advantages when it comes to hosting, connecting and broadcasting thoughts of multiple people at once, split over vast distances. Due to being able to connect directly to the Spirit, and mediate consciousness through such channels, distance, once a link is established, is largely irrelevant to the difficulty of mental communication. Even some obstacles such as sealed Spatial distortions or Barriers can be bypassed by briefly going deeper, touching the Truesoul, yet the effort increases commensurately. Resilience increases significantly, and the effect of the Resilience of those who the bearer of this Skill tries to read will be reduced slightly, making it easier to grasp deeper thoughts, and trivial for surface thoughts to be scanned if so desired.

“And then…”

Spiritual Beacon is a Class given to a being composed mostly of a Spiritual nature, who functions as both a guiding light to other Spiritual beings, but can also transmit Spiritual strength and information, even touching the outer reaches of a Truesoul. Abilities affecting Telepathy, Connections, Bonds and Light Elemental energies are strengthened. Foresight will slightly increase.

“Coupled with her powerful Split Thoughts, and the fact that she’s constantly communicating through differing flows of time and spatial gaps, such as the Ring Gates… it’s no wonder she picked up a little proficiency. It’s basic, but…”

“If I ever have some free time, perhaps I’ll get Arisu-san to teach me. I’d ask you, but somehow you’re even busier than she is.” Haru chuckled.

“Don’t worry, for you I’ll definitely make the time.” I promised, and Haru merely stared at me, her brown eyes pensive for a moment, while my sis whistled.

“Uh… bad bro! No hitting on Haru-chan, you know the rules!”

“He wasn’t hitting on me, Aiko-chan.” Haru leaked a half-laugh, half-sigh. “I know better than anyone. He’s just so… well, picture a puppy wagging his tail, eager to give me a bone he’s just dug up. Though it’s covered in mud and drool…”

“Wow! Endearing image!” my sis giggled. “But it makes sense. He does like you a lot, and respects you too, Haru-chan!”

“Of course I do. She’s the sort of woman our father would have loved to have as a daughter. Calm, smart, pretty, professional, talented… I mean, she’s already got one Skill at Rank ten, another Rank and she’ll be a Prodigy Of The Lower Worlds too. And before that, and even now, she’s a successful civil servant, and not just that, but a Ministerial undersecretary, and heir apparent for the future!”

“Stop, you’ll make me blush.” Haru spoke in a deadpan monotone, though her usual pale white cheeks did have a sightly healthier tone. “But alas, your father is stuck with you pair, not me.”

“Wow, you wound me, Haru-chan, lucky I know you’re joking! Besides, daughters-in-law are good enough. I feel quite outnumbered sometimes.” My sis shook her head. “But enough playing around. I’ve watched my bro flirt with Haanōbō, two Valkyries and now you. It’s amusing, but it also pisses me off somehow, you know? Let’s focus on what matters…”

As Haanōbō muttered that we weren’t flirting, nobody deigning to respond, I nodded.

“Yeah, I’d like to put this day behind us. At least the final parts of the Pilgrimage should be far less eventful. Though I do worry about Michiru-san’s village. If it’s full of cosplay ninjas I might feel ill.”

At my words, my sis nodded. “I get what you mean. She’s a funny girl, but… her younger sister is really ashamed of her. And as for her father… I’ve seen him guarding the Pilgrims. He’s… yeah, if our dad was like that, maybe I’d go crazy too.”

“Well, I think we can skip out on training tonight.” I chuckled. “Even you, Haru. I hate putting more work on Chiasa-chan and Chiaki-chan’s shoulders, but… we’ll go out in Kyoto and have some drinks and fun, unwind after our successes here. I’ll get Ling to bring the three of you over too.” I nodded at the Tengu.

“I wouldn’t worry. They would be honoured. And they may be young girls, but they aren’t fragile. If anything, they’re more mature than you pair.” Haru insisted. “And honestly, they’ve been living with Telepathy, even if it was largely limited to detecting lies and occasional surface thoughts, except between each other, all these years. So even without my Favour, they’ve got a great grasp on their powers. If anyone are prodigies, that darling pair are.”

“I’m totally mature. But I get what you mean about my bro.” my sis teased. “Anyway Haru-chan, just because the twins are great doesn’t make you any less special. So, bro…” she turned her attention back to me. “…tell us what other wonders Haru-chan’s achieved.”

“Fine. There’s…”

Pure Revenant is an advanced Class given to Spiritual beings who have lost their Material forms, through death or other such mischance, yet their Spirit lived on. In addition, the Spirit must be pure, not consumed by Negative Karma, grudges and Yin energies, and also have a number of Classes and Skills dealing with Healing and soothing such negative Spiritual ailments.

The effect of Spiritual attacks such as mystical fires, wards, talismans and holy waters are significantly reduced, and if these Spiritual strikes rely too heavily on Yang energies or Poisitive Karma, they may fail to be effective, or at higher Levels in this Class, even become reversed into a beneficial boon.

Aether will increase significantly, and affinity for Light Elemental energies, Yang energies, and other such Positive-aspected attributes will increase significantly also.

“It’s a great Class. You’ve also just got the final push for Kami-Blessed. With two days of Pilgrimage left, you’ll max it out, I’m sure. Then you also got a lot of general Statistic increases and Skill Ranks. You also got Summer added to your solar plexus Chakra, but you didn’t get the Manipulation Skill. Overall, you’ve become a great deal stronger.”

“And more useful, to quote our departed Valkyrie.” Haru snorted. “I suppose it makes sense, since I can’t be Summer South here, that’s you, Akio, but you did bargain for Suzaku to go wild with me. I’m surprised you didn’t get Winter added to your sacral Chakra, after Genbu’s efforts.”

“It’s because most of the energy went into bolstering and splitting the Lost Droplet, though I did get a boost from the overspill.” I surmised. “Anyway, you’ve probably got a bold future in learning Tengu-style Onmyōji Arts, Haru…”

“I’ll add it to the ever-growing list of things I don’t have time for…” she rolled her eyes. “Anyway, thank you for updating me. If I know what I can do and what I can improve, I can perform better. And training is the mainstay of the proper, adult workforce, not just those who freelance or bum around in idleness. Though you’ve certainly taken to the corporate training mindset.” she teased me.

“It’s addictive.” my sis chuckled at her playful banter. “And also… necessary. He doesn’t want what happened to you to happen to anyone else he cares about, Haru-chan.” With that declaration, my sis shifted the mood. “Anyway, lets go meet up with the Elves, Daiyu and the others. Though I wonder what Hachiman will think? He’s a bit of a taciturn one, isn’t he? He could stand to lighten up a little…”

“Yeah. But I think arguing with even an Avatar of such a famous God is a bit much. After all, Emperor Ōjin is in our history textbooks. Speaking of… winter break will soon be over, then it’s your final exams, isn’t it? Prepared?”

“Wow, don’t remind me. But yeah, I’m good to go. English, no problems, maths and physics neither. The rest… just memorisation, and with my stats I’m good.” She pumped a fist as if she was with her volleyball teammates. “Besides…” she winkled playfully. “…I’m certain I’d get an AO admission even if I flunked. I am your sister, bro, and a Chosen… uh, am I still a Chosen, technically? Anyway… my point is, it won’t come to that, but… I’ll definitely get into my first choice uni. Though they’ll need to give me plenty of leeway when it comes to mandatory minimum attendance.”

“If you had to go through the Administrative Office rather than passing your exams, father would be annoyed.” I chuckled, flicking her forehead, or rather the mask she wore, a dull ringing sound echoing. “Anyway, I believe in you. Eri’s taking an exam for Tokyu U, isn’t she? Though she has no intention of going, it’s just for pride, and to keep uncle and auntie happy.”

“Yeah, apparently Hinata’s grandfather told her she needs to do things that challenge her, and also make her proud of herself. Me… I’m not taking that exam. Wow, the pass rate is only like thirty percent, and that’s amongst all the top students nationwide. Though Eri should be fine, since she won’t have to sit the interview part, just the formal exams. Wow, back home in Nishimorioka, the teachers at school must be going wild, seeing their students taking such prestigious exams…”

Haanōbō and Arangbō exchanged puzzled glances as we began heading for the exit, this mini-Pilgrimage to become the Directions completed. As Haru joined in, talking about the fact that she was actually an alumni of Tokyu University and their world-class Political Science department, I held in a chuckle. And here’s me, graduated from a mid-tier uni. I feel quite outclassed. Oh well, if I didn’t, I’d never have met Shiro, which would have been problematic in plenty of other ways now…
