Side Two Hundred And Twenty-Three – Hikawa Chiaki and Hikawa Chiasa / Yukiko, Princess Mikasa
Hikawa Chiasa and Hikawa Chiaki, Hikawa-Kawagoe Shrine, Tokyo
“So, this is like… a marriage shrine then, Ren-kun?” Asami-sama was saying to their brother, Ren-sama. Asami-sama was wearing shrine maiden attire, while Ren-sama was in his usual apprentice priest robes.
They do look… good together. Yes. They do.
“That’s a lot like Kana-chan’s shrine then. Shirohebizumi is a fertility shrine. That used to annoy and embarrass Kana-chan, but now I think she’s into it.” Asami-sama chuckled brightly.
“Yes.” Ren-sama straightened his back pridefully, but at the slightly loose smile on his face, the twins glanced at each other, though there was no need. Ren-sama has definitely… fallen for her. Yes. She is not what we imagined for him… we like her though. And in modern times… yes, a friend of Kana-sama’s is not ordinary… quite the opposite in fact.
“Though our shrine is one of the most important in Tokyo, maybe even in Japan.” Ren-sama insisted. “We revere the mighty Susanoo-no-Mikoto and his wife Kushinada-hime, as well as their son, and her parents. The five Kami of our shrine… they are all extremely pivotal. As has our shrine been for all these years. Though…” His prideful mood deflated. “…Susanoo faction has ended.”
“Maybe so, Ren-kun, maybe so.” Asami-sama reassured him, touching his shoulder and hand intimately. Ren-sama’s face flushed a light pink, and the twins couldn’t help but find that amusing, despite such romantic feelings being something they had not really experienced.
Brother Ren-sama is… growing up, yes. It is only natural. After all… yes, he has matured after Kyoto. Everyone changed. Did we…? I think we might have. Not changed, perhaps, but… crystallised, yes? Purified?
“But cheer up.” Asami-sama reassured him. “Out of the ashes, doesn’t a Phoenix rise? Although the Phoenix we’ve met isn’t exactly awe-inspiring. Besides, not that I entirely get it, but isn’t there only one faction now, and your shrine is still a major part of it?”
“True.” Ren-sama nodded, and the twins gazed at him fondly. Ever since they were young, they realised they had to support their brother, as he fulfilled his duties as the future head of the shrine. Gifted with the light of the sun within him, perilously strong for the shrine bloodlines of the modern age, where mysticism and true faith was only carried by a handful of declining families, it seemed almost like he was destined for greatness.
We too. Yes. We too. Else why would we… be so gifted?
“You know, Asami-chan…” he began, a slight smile on his pink face. “…it’s a shame you missed the Reitaisai and the Kawagoe festival. The end of October is busy and fun here… I’d… love to show you around next year.” He seemed almost shy saying that, and the twins both leaked a quiet giggle, unusual for them.
Ren-sama has… a cute side too, yes.
“Looking forward to it, Ren-kun. Festivals are so much more fun when we go with others, and… well, it’s a shame we probably won’t be back to see in the New Year at this shrine. Unless…”
“No. Not a chance.” Ren-sama shook his head. “I’m not asking Arisugawa-san for a favour. She’s too intimidating! Though I suppose if Akio-san or any of the others are coming back to Shirohebizumi shrine, maybe we can tag along…”
“Yeah, if they are going to spend the first shrine visit of the year anywhere, it’d be there. Though I suppose it could always be Tsukuyomi-jinja, or maybe the Grand Shrine at Ise? Akio-kun’s got a lot of shrine-related girlfriends.”
“Akio-kun, huh?” Ren-sama seemed unbothered, but his sisters knew him well enough to see the irritation and uncertainly in his brown eyes. He kept his voice casual though, as if not really interested. “Changed the way you address him, haven’t you?”
“Oh, yeah. Mio-chan’s doing it, so I didn’t feel like I fitted in if I didn’t. Besides, he and Kana-chan are going steady, he’s the boyfriend of one of my best friends, and despite being older, he’s quite easy to talk to…”
I think we should… step in, yes. Ren-sama is… always our Ren-sama.
“Oh… Ren-sama, Asami-sama…” Chiaki began, Chiasa finishing the sentence. “…matters are proceeding well.”
“Uh, yes.” Ren-sama blinked, thrown off by their sudden appearance, and the twins resisted the urge to smile, as Ren-sama was oblivious to anything around him when Asami-sama was with him. “Naturally!” His instinctive pride and desire to look good in front of his sisters reasserted itself. Asami-sama stifled a giggle behind one hand, as Ren-sama explained. “This is the final stop of this leg of Tokyo, as the new shrine at the Tengokusentou is the final act. It’s an honour, but one that we deserve. After all, we’ve been…” He paused, and the twins exchanged thoughts without a pause.
No need for guilt, Ren-sama. After all… yes, we were equally as guilty. More so, in fact. Yes, because we… we could see through lies, yet we still followed Uchida Yamato-sama… and the cost was… yes, terrible. The fault… is ours. We will… never allow ourselves… to break faith and make… such mistakes again!
“…part of this from near the start. Though…” He turned to Asami-sama, and in a manner he likely thought was smooth, but the twins thought was rather clumsy, he praised her friend, Kana-sama. “…of course, Shirohebizumi shrine, while modest, does stand alongside us, as the one that discovered Akio-san.”
“Yeah, Kana-chan’s got good eyes. In more ways than one.” Asami-sama agreed, before narrowing her brown eyes. “Oh, Chiaki-chan, Chiasa-chan, please stop calling me Asami-sama, it’s weird coming from my boyfriend’s sisters, in fact, it’s overall just a bit… oh, I’m not trying to be rude, it’s an endearing quirk, but… uh, just forget it.” As Asami-sama stammered to a stop, the twins nodded, mirror images of each other.
“It is just…” “…our way, Asami-sama.” As she waved a hand to dismiss her earlier complaints, they continued explaining. “…we mean no offense…” “…far from it, in fact.” “We are honoured you would…” “…hold affection for our brother.” “…but Ren-sama is clumsy.” “…he is also jealous.” “Of Akio-sama.” “Yes, of Akio-sama.”
“Me? Jealous?” Ren-sama spluttered, his faint flush deepening, before, in an act that pleased the twins, showing his growing maturity, he let out a long sigh. “Honestly? Yes. Not in the way you’re thinking though.” He hastily assured Asami-sama. “It’s just… I’ve made mistakes. I still… don’t feel good about that.”
“Even Akio-sama has made mistakes…” “…some worse than yours, Ren-sama.” The twins were exasperated but also comforting. “…no-one, not even the Kami…” “…are without failures. Look at the Noble Lady Diviner…” “Tsukiko-sama was told she could not be saved, yet…” “…here we are, her future assured.”
“You know, it’s going to be hard for your boyfriends in future, Chiaki-chan, Chiasa-chan.” Asami-sama observed, amused. “You’re like two halves of a whole. I know it’s rude to say, but… I honestly struggle to tell the two of you apart sometimes. Though…” Asami-sama took in their Adamant shrine maiden attire. “…you’re wearing that, so no boyfriends for you for a while.”
Tell us… apart? That’s simply… impossible. For we… yes, we… are two halves… of the same being.
Even in the womb, before they were truly conscious beings, they were together, able to sense each other’s nascent thoughts and primitive feelings. When born as identical twins, and given their names, not that Chiasa and Chiaki really saw themselves as individuals, everyone said they were mirror images of each other, but… Sometimes it is hard… yes, hard, knowing when… people lie. The world… it is full of liars.
Able to communicate with each other with their thoughts, and to quite often sense when those speaking to them were untruthful, life had been… difficult… for the twins. They had wanted for nothing, Ren-sama was kind to them, and their parents, especially their noble father, doted on them. Immersed in tales of the Kami, the reason for their gifts, the twins had found purpose, and a deep respect for the Gods. We are never alone… we are always together. But Asami-sama is right. Yes, we are indeed not easy to accept or handle.
Of course, just because they were two halves of a whole, intertwined at a fundamental level, which had only grown stronger as they studied with Haru-sama, who had also awakened, or rather, had been gifted, a strong form of telepathy later in life, which had driven her to the point of insanity, and led to her death and subsequent rebirth, that didn’t mean they didn’t have their slight differences. Haru-sama would insist that she is not reborn, merely… yes, merely still dead, just being worked after her passing, like… the servants buried with Egyptian Pharaohs in the past. Yes… we studied that in history classes… it does not seem too farfetched now… no, it certainly does not.
The twins had only been able to truly read each other’s thoughts, which was a mercy. But over the years it had certainly blended them together, to the point they certainly felt abnormal. Other girls in their class avoided them, finding them difficult to speak to, and their male brothers and friends… objectively, we are quite beautiful… yes we are, but we are also intimidating… and never separate, always together. Though… some of the lies…
They exchanged a silent nod, which Ren-sama was used to, but it threw Asami-sama off a little, though she merely smiled awkwardly, and they didn’t detect any lies in her words when she praised them, so they accepted her.
Yes, there are those who… felt they could woo us both. Fools… idiots. The world was full of greedy people. Ironically, Akio-sama stood above them all, in terms of ambition, though when they first met, he was still rather self-deprecating and nervous. And Akio-sama was also the point where their slight individuality showed.
I believe this was all destined, that our powers were given by the Kami so we could serve as his true shrine maidens. For he is sure to be a God… even now… Akio-sama had just arrived. Late of course, he was always busy, and the Pilgrimage was no exception. He was accompanied by Shiro-sama, the vessel of a genuine Goddess, and also the living embodiment of the Regalia, Ame-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi, who was clutching his free hand tightly, glancing around with her pale eyes in wonder. …I note it seems like Shiro-sama… no, Taṇhā-sama… Shiro-sama’s hair was a fiery red, as were her eyes, and her skin was a rich brown, unusual in Japan, which showed it was the Goddess herself in control, …wishes to hold his hand too.
After that long, unbroken stream of thoughts from Chiaki, Chiasa was next to rebut her thinking. It is not destiny. It might merely be a coincidence, sister. We are architects of our own fate. But I agree, I wish nothing more than to serve as his shrine maiden and herald. And he most certainly will ascend to Divinity, shrines will be built in his name. As it stands… it seems he shall have a Divine lover, Taṇhā-sama has surrendered to the inevitable result of all this. But we… we must work harder!
Yes. Their thoughts merged again. Their powers were growing, and as a repository of all the shared experience of learning elements, the two of them were determined to master them all. Their unique telepathic bond had surely become the Skill Telepathy by now, for they could access the thoughts of others, though not yet to the extent Haru-sama could. While we have great veneration… for the Kami of our shrine, and always… yes, we always will, that does not change… will never change, the fact that Akio-sama is the one… yes, the one… who stands before us, and is worthy of our devotion. As yes… as yes… we both agreed, to wear the uniform!
All that happened in mere moments, and Asami-sama followed their gaze. “Oh, it’s Akio-kun. And don’t be jealous, Ren-kun! Unless…” She paused. “…uh, it’s probably too soon, but… I could call you just Ren?”
The twins were amused as their brother seemed both delighted and embarrassed, before trying to pretend he felt neither, feigning nonchalance. “Sure. And I’ll… call you Asami?”
“It’s a deal then.” She giggled and leaned in for a kiss on Ren-sama’s cheek, which made him squirm and blush. She then winked at the twins. “You probably don’t want to see your brother flirting, you’re not Aiko-chan. Thank the Kami for that. I don’t know if I could handle you pair if you were brocon twins. Although…” She was shrewd, and while she didn’t take her duties as a trainee too seriously, she was connected to a number of important, central figures. “…to my eyes, it seems like you’ve set your sights on loftier goals. Quite ambitious, and you’re rather too young. Try again in a couple of years.”
“You misunderstand us.” “Yes, you are quite mistaken.” Their words came out in a rebuttal. “We have no expectations of such.” “We are his maidens.” “We shall be the ones to spread his glory.” “To speak of his feats, and his legends!” “Though should he seek us…” “…of course we will not refuse.” “We wear the uniform of Adamant because…” “…we believe in him.” “Be it destiny…” “…or be it the result of everyone’s efforts…” They paused, before speaking together, words overlapping. “…we believe this is what we are meant for.”
“My little sisters are oddly stubborn. Though…” Ren-sama was ashamed. “…they are also too obedient. That’s why they followed me, and Yamato-sama, even when it led to…” He shook his head. “…never mind that. I worry. Akio-san isn’t alone in that. I’m a big brother too. But… I really don’t think he’s aiming for my sisters. Though of course I need to be cautious, keep a watch out. After all, they’ve got the Hikawa looks, and they are loyal, smart girls. Even if they are as stubborn as they are cute.” He sighed. “You’ll not get them to stop calling you Asami-sama, though… I wish they would. It makes them seem distant. And… I don’t want them to be like than with you. Asami.”
Oh. I see…. Yes, I see too…
“We mean no offense.” “Yes, it is just how we are.” They exchanged another barrage of rapid thoughts, before, with an effort, they smiled, and that made their brother pause, confused.
“Asami…-chan…” “And Ren-san…” They were both amused to see their brother both relieved and a little disappointed. “…we will act more like little sisters should…” “…yes, though you still have our respect as the future head of Hikawa-Kawagoe…” “…but I suppose we have a higher calling…” “…so yes, you should not be on the same footing as Akio-sama, brother.”
“How is it they did what I asked, and I feel all upset?” Ren-san grumbled, and Asami-chan pulled him into a cheeky hug, which made him blush deeply.
“Because they’re growing up and showing affection for another guy. Even if it’s not romantic, they obviously respect Akio-kun a lot. Well, he did save their lives, right? Though you did good too, my brave, strong Ren-kun!” She kissed his cheek again, and he couldn’t help but grin bashfully.
Yes, from disaster… comes growth. Yes, our brother has matured… indeed, he most certainly has…
“Anyway… I want to get my offerings done and watch the show.” Asami-chan pointed to where Arisu-sama was running through the final checks for her broadcast. The strange, somewhat dangerous scientist from America was there, Christina Bakker, yet oddly enough, they didn’t find her intimidating, as her words, no matter how seemingly contradictory or nonsensical, were never lies. She always believed in what she said wholeheartedly, even her off-colour jokes. And while that certainly didn’t mean she was right…
We learned that from Uchida-sama… yes, he believed his own justifications… thus we… yes, we were fooled too…
…it did mean they were not forced to navigate the dissembling and scheming ordinary people indulged in. That was a great relief. The Fae likewise, they played pranks, they teased, but they did not lie, and Akio-sama was also honest, often foolishly so, and that meant spending time around them was no trial, and in fact relaxed their constantly overstressed minds.
In addition, Yukiko-sama, the Priestess of Ise Grand Shrine and Imperial Princess, was with them, the remaining two Regalia looking on with interest. There was a small, green-skinned girl too, hand held by Christina, who was observing everything with equal parts confusion and interest, and one of the idols from AKB0048 too.
Kanzaki-san I believe. Though… yes, I agree. She wants to be Kanzaki-sama…
In the idol version of the Adamant uniforms, she did look quite attractive, the twins had to admit, and there was certainly nothing wrong with respect for Akio-sama or pledging ultimate loyalty to him. In fact, it is to be… applauded, yes, I agree.
“Yeah…” Ren-san agreed. “Obviously, my sisters and me, we don’t need to, as we have the blessing of the Kami here, though of course, they are only servants. Those we worship are far too powerful to be on Earth right now!” The twins observed Asami-chan beaming with amused affection at their prideful brother, even if they didn’t disagree with his sentiments. “But… I’ll go with you! I’ll go anywhere with you!”
“Such a smooth line.” Asami-chan giggled. “It’s a date then. Tonight… we may not be good enough to be training with the elites, but Kana-chan promised us a device so we can safely watch the Seelie Court depart. Apparently it’s going to be spectacular!”
That’s right. We’re very much… looking forward to it, yes. Though… yes, though we still have… a great deal to do.
“Kana-chan’s got some plans before that though. Eri-chan’s invited her out somewhere. But they’ll be back, apparently.” Asami-chan mentioned. “Kana-chan’s so in demand!”
“Don’t worry, I have time for you!” their brother boasted, and the twins held in their giggles, rapidly teasing him in their mind. Glancing around, they could see another large group gathering, ready to enter the Boundary to make their offerings, and the shrine, already a rich and powerful one, was now blessed with further wealth.
Sister, shall we? Yes, we shall. I too want to see the broadcast… as do I. After all, it concerns faith, and the power of it… and it is a further step on the journey for Akio-sama to become… what he was meant to… no, sister, what he needs to… yes, to be!
Hurrying over, the twins escorted the group to the tents set up for journeying to the Boundary, and as they entered, the effort requiring little strength as they were experienced now, they quickly gathered up the pilgrims, led them to the arrived caravan of offerings for the Boundary, and guided them to the Kami and spiritual beings who made Hikawa-Kawagoe shrine their home…

Yukiko, Princess Mikasa, Hikawa-Kawagoe Shrine, Tokyo
“No need to be afraid. Nobody here will hurt you.” Yukiko addressed the shy little Goblin who was with Christina. She was certainly a cute little thing, wide-eyed and trembling. Small horns jutted through her sliver hair at her forehead, and her jade-green eyes were larger than a human’s would be, but not large enough to trigger the ‘uncanny valley’ response.
“Yes, it’s all fine!” Christina agreed cheerfully. Several of the younger shrine maidens were waiting just behind the hastily built stage for the broadcast, and the Goblin whose name apparently was Aine, turned towards them, and as she was reassured, the dark-skinned Hotene nodding, Aine let out a little murmur of agreement.
“What… is happening here? I don’t understand…”
“We’re going in front of the world!” their third co-host, Kanzaki Keiko-san, the idol from AKB0048 who Akio had saved, and who had declared Akio her ideal man, spoke up. “Uh…” She was suddenly self-conscious before Yukiko and Arisu-san, which amused Yukiko. I know I’m the Imperial Princess, but… that’s not such a special thing here. We’ve got other princesses. Shaeula had returned for the final stop of today’s Pilgrimage, and later Eleanor would be joining them through the Ring Gate again, for the viewing party in the Fae Realms.
“…are you sure you want me co-hosting, Arisu-chan?” Kanzaki-san asked. “I’m not opposed, but…”
“We have worked together before.” Arisu-san stated, looking down at a clipboard one of her WTV staffers had handed her, nodding, before signing something off and handing it back. “And we have a certain amount of rapport. You have a decent level of chemistry with Akio-san as well. Our last talk show was a great success. Besides…” Arisu-san’s dark obsidian eyes, while usually hard and cold, were now glimmering with slight amusement. “…while I am not part of Adamant and so have no right to interfere in its matters, I believe you wearing that uniform signifies you are willing to give your all for Akio-san.”
Kanzaki-san flushed a little but managed a slow nod. “He did save me and the others. And gave me these opportunities. I’ll do it then!”
“Excellent. I had no doubts.” Arisu-san soothed. “But there is no need to feel put upon. I shall also be calling upon your fellow group mates, especially those of your trio. With the benefits you have all gained, your need to practice your routines will have diminished significantly. That frees you up… and WTV needs a substantial amount of new programming, and new hosts.”
“I… see.” Kanzaki-san nodded slowly. “I suppose that makes sense. All right then…” She pumped herself up, fists clenched. “What do you need?”
“Simple. I shall lead, while you shall be the support. Princess Mikasa here…”
“Yukiko. I insist.” Yukiko declared stoutly, and Arisu-san gave a dry laugh.
“Yukiko-san. I suppose that is proper, as we are allies and comrades in battle, and dragged about by Akio-san’s endless whims, although…” Yukiko flinched under her searching gaze. “…it seems that you are happy to concede. I suppose it takes all sorts. Do try not to fall out with White. And speaking of… here they are. Cutting it fine as ever.”
Yukiko spotted Akio coming over. Tsurugi was holding his hand, and the Goddess Taṇhā was with him, although she paused, exchanged a few quiet words with Akio, and then turned around and headed into the shrine proper. Seeing Akio coming, Aine brightened up, and she waved with her free hand. Akio waved back, and Yukiko held in a laugh. Seems like he’s good with children. But then, he’d need to be. Asha is pregnant, and in time…
Reddening at that line of thought, which she buried deeply and dismissed as far too soon, she was amused to note that Kanzaki-san was standing taller, subconsciously showing off. Christina too, though in her case… yeah, frustrating and annoying. Just like always…
“Akio, you’re here!” Christina gushed, bending her back a little so her chest strained at her shrine maiden hakama, which Yukiko found a little sacrilegious, but despite everything, and her position, she wasn’t exactly a pious believer. Besides, it’s quite a common outfit in popular culture of a certain sort, apparently…
“Yeah. So, did you behave yourself?” Akio asked, and Christina chuckled, not offended.
“Of course I did! I’ve plenty to keep myself occupied with, every day has a dozen new wonders, my preconceptions are constantly being shattered. Besides… Aine here was safe with me! I’ve shown her around, we had some nice treats, and the younger members of the Pilgrimage kept her company.”
Yukiko noticed Adelheid hanging around and couldn’t help but smile. I’m sure she didn’t enjoy being grouped together with the younger girls. Although in Japanese terms she’s still not an adult…
“I’ve not… tasted things like that before.” Aine admitted. “And while there were far too many humans… nobody hurt me. Though a lot did stare!” she insisted.
“That’s because we’re gorgeous and cute! Best combination!” Christina teased.
“I’ll not argue with that.” Akio conceded, and as Christina puffed herself up, he shot her down. “But no matter how attractive you are, you’re not my type, so you can drop the flirting.”
“Ouch! Be still my heart!” Christina flushed and pressed her free hand against her straining chest. “You know just how to fire me up. This is that tsundere you Japanese are so fond of, I know it!”
“Believe what you want…” Akio chuckled. He turned away, ignoring her, and Christina began to grin and pant in a rather off-putting manner, as Yata and Magatama approached Tsurugi.
“Have you been good?” Magatama asked, her expression motherly, and Tsurugi pouted.
“I was sleeping! How can I get into trouble sleeping with father?”
“Withfather?” Arisu-san’s eyes were back to her arctic chill, like miniature black holes, and Akio-san surprised Yukiko by just shrugging, unbothered.
“You know I wouldn’t do that. I’m not a pervert. Besides, Tan was there, and thus Shiro. Tsurugi was just resting beside us. She used up a lot of strength yesterday. Although…” His Eyes shone, and he nodded in approval. “She’s regained a fair bit of it. The adherence is growing. Though… we need to redirect it a little to our use.”
“Indeed.” Arisu-san agreed. “I am not really suspecting your motives, you understand, it is simply… no matter. Taking out my personal biases on you is merely perpetuating the unfairness I laboured under. And White will be angry. Red too, it seems.” She curled her lip into a sharp smile. “Has the day come?”
“Tonight.” Akio nodded solemnly. “So we need to wrap this up.” As the Regalia chatted happily, sharing what they had seen, Yukiko watched them warmly, having already made up her mind. Whether or not Gorohito becomes the Emperor… none of the Regalia will accompany him. They are the symbols of Imperial rule, yes, but also… living beings. Not our servants, not our slaves. But… in a way, I suppose they are my daughters. It seems odd, thinking like that, but… Akio and I, we… gave birth to them again, in a way…
“Yes. So, I have the revised schedule, bringing up the matter of this Goblin princess here…” Arisu-san agreed. “…it will likely cause quite a stir in Britain, but your words carry weight, and I expect that the powers-that-be over there will make the required course corrections via the media. Princess Eleanor certainly will. You truly are beyond my expectations.” Her black-eyed gaze flickered over to Yukiko. “If he mistreats you, feel free to tell me. I will trust in White’s judgement, and the behaviour I have observed from him so far, but… as one woman to another, we should look out for each other.”
Yukiko regarded Akio, who was smiling ruefully. “Thank you, Arisu-san. But… I’ve been watching him too. I know what I’m getting into, and… the heart wants what it wants.”
“Just because you want something does not make it necessarily healthy.” Arisu-san countered. “Alcoholics crave poison after all, and gamblers ruin. But… I do understand. But some of us must remain clearheaded and logical. Now… to your positions!”
Yukiko took up the seat on the left of Arisu-san, while Kanzaki-san was on her right. The stage was constructed, and lighting and sound checks took up another few minutes, with members of Adamant cordoning off the area. The pilgrim tide was diminishing anyway, as the evening drew to a close, their tributes paid to the Kami of the shrine. Under the dark evening skies, the stage was lit by a number of floodlights, carefully oriented to avoid creating shadows that would look strange on television.
“Lighting is natural, sound checks show no odd echoes, and volume is good.” the producer was saying, a fussy-looking man in his fifties. “Signal is strong, no delays, and we have the website open. We go live in ten. Nine. Eight…”
Yukiko-san held her breath. Even now, such public appearances didn’t come easily to her, but… it’s the role I’ve had thrust upon me, but just because something was forced on me, doesn’t mean I can’t own it, make it mine. I’ve learned than from everyone. And… Her gaze lingered on the Regalia. …I want to make a difference.
“And we are a go!” the producer declared, and as the red lights on the cameras changed to green ones, Arisu-san, resplendent in a shrine maiden-themed dress, a deep crimson with elegant white trim and lace, a white hairpin in her black hair, began her greetings.
“Welcome to WTV’s scheduled broadcast, which as yet has no official title, but I would suggest could be called the informative hour. Because if you miss this, I fear everyone will laugh at you, for being out of the loop.”
At Arisu-san’s light joke, Yukiko was once more caught out by how well she adapted to any circumstances, always the consummate professional.
“And tonight, my co-host and special guests require no introduction, but as the host, nonetheless, I shall offer them. Kanzaki Keiko, popular member of the national treasure idol group AKB0048, and avowed fan of Oshiro Moonstone Akio…”
“Hi, I’m Kanzaki Keiko!” The idol also switched gears, her nervousness either forgotten or well masked. “I don’t normally present, but when Arisu-chan calls, who can refuse? As for saying I’m Akio-kun’s fan… that’s understating it. But…” She glanced at Akio, who was in the fourth seat. “…saying anything else here would just be embarrassing. Please forgive my discretion!”
“I am sure the audience will. Our female viewers anyway. The male ones may be rather frustrated.” Arisu-san pointed out. “And our guests tonight are the stars of yesterday’s shocking broadcast from the Imperial Palace. Princess Mikasa herself, and the man of the hour, no, of every hour, Oshiro Moonstone Akio.”
“Thank you.” Yukiko bowed politely. “I’m once more proud to be in front of Japan, and indeed the world. But I do apologise for constantly causing a fuss. Yet please listen to what we have to say. This is indeed information the world needs to hear.”
“I’m also glad to be here.” Akio was the perfect picture of calm, and Yukiko felt the soothing weight of his Majesty. It might have no effect through TV cameras, but it certainly lent him an authoritative air. “And just as Princess Mikasa…” Yukiko frowned at that but knew why he used her Imperial title. I still prefer it when he calls me Yukiko, though. Without honorifics too. It makes me feel closer to him.
“…is sorry for taking up your time, I am as well, but…” He winked, and Yukiko found herself captivated by him. Since yesterday, the way she looked at him had changed, despite her feelings being as they were. It’s amazing what an official arrangement can do to focus the mind and emotions. I’m embarrassed, but… Yukiko had enough Majesty and mental stats to keep her face impassive, preventing her flush from embarrassing her on worldwide TV.
“…I do think this is important. And besides, our new TV station is just beginning. WTV will have some entertaining as well as informative programming soon.”
With the introduction underway, Arisu-san recapped yesterday’s events, with interjections from Kanzaki-san.
“…can’t believe Akio-kun got engaged to our nation’s Imperial Princess!” Kanzaki-san pouted cutely. “I was shocked. Shocked!”
“I was more shocked by the content of the broadcast. The Imperial Regalia. Though Tsukumogami are something I am experienced with, they are definitely unique. A link to the past of Japan, and… a treasure for the future. No, not just a treasure, but…”
Arisu-san turned to Yukiko, who took a deep breath. Yukiko glanced at Akio, who mouthed a reassuring “It’ll be fine!” at her, and so she agreed it would be. Compared to the broadcast yesterday, I’m among friends… and everyone is working towards the same goal.
“Yes. I’m once more grateful that Akio was able to help right our wrongs and awaken the Regalia. But I know that we caused some… confusion… yesterday.” She gestured, and the three Regalia, Yata leading, appeared on camera. She held in a laugh, biting her lip, as Tsurugi had somehow found a snack, and her face was covered in crumbs. With a shake of her head, Magatama produced a cloth from her dress near her ample bosom and wiped her clean.
“Let me clarify. My brother, the Imperial Prince Gorohito, does not speak for Japan or the Imperial Family when he stated that the Regalia are the property of the Imperial Family. They are our treasures, yes, but… they were different times. What country doesn’t have mistakes in their past? And…” This is the pertinent point, relevant to the Goblin Aine as well, and what we seek to achieve here. “…just what is human? No, we use human to mean both sentient and sapient, to have thoughts, feelings, emotions, wants and desires. Language to express such things too, and other clear indicators of true intelligence.”
“I am Yata no Kagami.” the slender, golden-eyed and silver-haired Tsukumogami intoned, her words carrying the weight of ages. “I am the mirror that reflects truth and wisdom. But what is wisdom changes over the passing of time.” She glanced at Yukiko. “I speak for my sisters when I say… we are tools, but… we have our own desires, wants and needs. Tools crave use, purpose, but those that think, feel and suffer… they desire more. We desire more.”
“Yes.” Magatama agreed. With black eyes and jade-like crystal hair, she was somehow softer in appearance than Yata, but no less powerful. And from what Akio has seen… there is a mystery to her… “I shall follow my desires and serve the Imperial lineage and grace Princess Mikasa with my strength.” She suddenly vanished, turning into a glittering jewel, and was around Yukiko’s neck.
“I shall serve father!” Tsurugi insisted. “I am his sword! He… he is father! No other hand shall touch me!” She shuddered. “I feel… uncomfortable. Like I am wrapped in chains, but… I can cut anything!” She transformed into a beautiful sword, the blade straight and elegant, rippling with a myriad of colours. Akio caught her dextrously, smiling ruefully.
“My sisters… they seek to serve. But… we still are bound. We cannot be any other way.” Yata intoned. “Would… would you keep us prisoned? Forced to serve unwillingly?”
It was Yukiko’s turn to speak. “We touched on this. But now… we’ll be clearer. And… it doesn’t just apply to us. Worldwide, this is important.” She took a deep breath. I always kept to the shadows, letting my brother handle the affairs of the Imperial Family. And why not? He is the heir and will follow after father and grandfather. Though the Imperial Family is just a figurehead nowadays. At least, it was. But just like the nobility and the true shrines, our purpose now is greater. And… I find I don’t want to let our family down, and worse, have our family let Japan down.
“There are those who would emphasise our differences, those who would condemn anything that is not the way they wish it to be. No, not just condemn.” Yukiko glanced over at Akio, who gave her a reassuring smile, which somehow settled her nerves… though now my heart is beating rapidly… that day, when Tsukiko came to comfort me, she said… that maybe I’d finally find my long-cherished dream. As usual, she was right. Though… to think I’d share my dream with her!
“They actively despise that which does not bow to their will and seek to destroy or enslave others. But… this is not the path I wish to follow. And I believe… that those of Japan, and indeed, the world, are not so foolish, haven’t forgotten the lessons of history. While we in Japan may have recanted the Humanity Declaration, Ningen-sengen, and reclaimed Amaterasu’s blessing and blood for our own… we will not reclaim the sins and mistakes of our past.” She addressed Yata then. “I hope that in time you’ll see that and forgive us. My brother was mistaken. In Japan, we treasure our tools. And how reassuring is it to know that the consequences of our actions give birth to results. I have seen other Tsukumogami, not just the Imperial Regalia. I believe any tool or possession, well-loved and cared for, can have a benevolent spirt. And that consequently, if mistreated, tormented, abused or… enslaved…” Yukiko’s words were broadcast to the world, and her nervousness had vanished, as she recited her rehearsed speech, though what she said was actually different. I had planned to appeal to the power of belief, but… that’s a little risky. I don’t want it specifically weaponised by others than the Church of True Revelation, who are already. But I can still move the watching world… the power of the media, perhaps if this had happened a hundred years ago, then things would be very different…
“…their Tsukumogami will be bitter, vengeful… and rightly so.” She bowed to Yata, while gently stroking the magatama bead of brilliant, clear jade, around her neck on a delicate chain. Akio was following suit, patting the shimmering blade of Tsurugi. It’s quite the show. They don’t need to become their Regalia forms, they can be Tsukumogami and Regalia at the same time, but… this is better spectacle, and… they feel more comfortable doing it.
“I once more apologise. When we broke faith, surrendered our claim to Divinity, we wounded you all. Fortunately, my fiancé…” She couldn’t help but flush a little, even with her stats trying to keep her calm. “…is a kind man, and a skilled one, and he was able to right our wrongs… but times have still changed. I ask the three of you humbly, please aid us. Not as tools, but as yourselves. Because, under Ministry law, you shall have the same rights and responsibilities as humans. Because… like it or not… any being that has free will, a sense of self and intelligence should be treated as we are.”
Yata nodded. “There is wisdom in this. I believe, in the distant past, when both mortal beings and spiritual ones shared the world, there was much conflict, great hatreds. But I reflect the world, and the world now… humanity has proliferated, and advanced beyond even my imaginings. Yet there is no shortage of war and strife still. As for… servitude… we are indeed meant to be used, desire it… but that does not make us slaves. We crave the freedom to make our own choice on who we serve, despite never having such. We dream, for what are dreams but reflections of our hidden wishes and deepest desires?.”
“I will always be with father!” Tsurugi cried out, and despite being a sword her voice was clearly recognisable. “Father and first mother!”
“I too.” Magatama’s voice echoed across the stage. “The chains that bind, forcing our submission to the Imperial Family… they are a heavy weight, but… not unpleasant, when I am in her hands, around her neck.”
Yata agreed. “There is much truth reflected here. I shall serve this land, but how I choose to serve is for me to decide. I have been illuminated. For… we three are not who we were before. We are ourselves, yet also… reborn. The fading reflections of the past are replaced by the brilliant truths of the now. Likewise…” She addressed the viewing world, golden eyes gleaming with a mysterious wisdom. “…do not be chained to the past, as we are. And do not turn aside from wisdom, be it unpalatable or harsh. For the truth is as unchanging as the sun, yet the now shifts, just as light does when the sun traverses the heavens.” She transformed, into a shining, shield-like mirror, dropping into Yukiko’s free hands. For a moment she panicked, fearing she would fumble the heavy weight that appeared out of nowhere, before breathing a sigh of relief as she caught it.
“We declare we have wills, and desires. Wants and needs. Please… respect them, and us.” Yata finished, and Yukiko took over, the light from the floodlights illuminating the stage causing Yata’s reflective surface to brighten like a brilliant moon, and all of the stage was plunged into darkness, barring Yukiko and Akio, and the Regalia they held, which seemed the only real things on the stage at that moment.
“All of Japan, I implore you… offer your blessings and keep an open mind and heart. The Regalia are tools, yes, but…” She smiled cheekily at Akio, in an image that Yukiko was unaware would surely be gracing the headlines of news bulletins and newspapers around the world over the coming days. “…also they are someone’s daughters. Think of your own, would you want your daughter to be treated as disposable, exploited? So please, Japan, and the world, search your hearts, and be compassionate.”
With that she stepped back, and Arisu-san nodded approvingly. “Powerful words from Princess Mikasa. I am a simple woman. I believe in treating others as I wish to be treated myself. I am no stranger to betrayal and disappointment. But I would be disappointed in Japan if the people were so hidebound as to force others to be tools, just because ‘that is the way it has always been done’.” Her tone was cold, scathing, and it made Aine flinch, but Akio gently reassured her it would be fine, before he took over the broadcast.
“We know this is a lot to take in. It was for me, too. Being a father is no easy thing, especially when said daughters spring out of seemingly nowhere.” His hand on Tsurugi’s hilt tightened, and she laughed happily. His rueful, slightly bemused expression also made Yukiko’s heart clench, for some reason, and she found it hard to look away. “Sisters too. Seems like I’m collecting them.” He picked up Aine and sat her on his shoulder. She seemed startled for a moment, before relaxing, but she still clung to his other hand. “Now, I’m not one to tell you all things aren’t going to get difficult, that there aren’t challenges ahead. But the Princess here was right.”
I wish he would call me by name, but… this is an official broadcast, I suppose.
“We can’t fight a war with hatred. I don’t believe in fighting fire with fire. No… in our case, we need the water of compassion, understanding and tolerance. I too will not tolerate the Regalia being forced to serve those they choose not to. They have the self-image and intelligence to make their wishes known. And there’s that famous saying, ‘he who saves a life, henceforth becomes responsible for it’. I’m not sure I agree, but in this case… I do. Now, what does this have to do with our shy little Goblin here?” He glanced at Aine, who was torn between wariness and curiosity, her big, green eyes blinking at the bright lights and the luminous glow of Yata in Yukiko’s hands. “Simple. We’ve been trying to tell the world things are different now. We did in London, and yesterday… change is coming. And change… I get it. Change is frightening.” He nodded firmly,
“Japan…” he explained. “…is an insular land. We have our own customs and cultures, and while we are a polite people, we don’t welcome foreigners, or change. Other countries, such as Britain, have similar worries. Hence the vote to leave the European Union a few years ago. Immigration, changing cultures, fear of rising costs, unemployment as jobs are taken, lack of access to healthcare and other services… there are a lot of fears, and some may even be justified. But whether they are or not doesn’t matter… we have to face the world as it is. And that reality is that we humans aren’t alone in the universe anymore. It may not be life on other worlds, though I have concrete proof that exists…”
As he spoke, Yukiko listened, captivated. They had briefly gone over their own roles before this. But just as Yukiko had slightly changed what she was going to say, fearing being too explicit was a mistake, so too had Akio adapted.
“…but it’s life, intelligent life nonetheless. Alien cultures and ways of thought, but… not too dissimilar from us. This child here… she’s a Goblin. From Britain, technically.” Akio winked at the camera. “Now I know you’ve heard all sorts of terrible stories about Goblins, how they are bloodthirsty, cruel savages. And some are. I’ve fought plenty of those and so has Princess Eleanor. But let me tell you a story. This child is the last Princess of the Goblins, and those who loved her sealed her away, so that she could be protected. Just like Sleeping Beauty, though fortunately she needed no kiss to awaken, I don’t want to be arrested.” He chuckled. “Now, the kind-hearted Goblins, who didn’t succumb to their hatred and fear… because that’s what it is, make no mistake…” Akio’s Majesty was on full display, and he was mimicking a lot of Arisu-san’s calculated movements and non-verbal communication, rendering him impossible to overlook. “…the Goblins that have become cruel and wicked were motivated by fear of the changing world, and hatred of their own kind, who they found fearful and pathetic…” As Aine’s face fell, a gentle breeze ruffled her hair and caressed her cheek reassuringly, as Akio channelled a little wind. “…does it sound familiar? The Church of True Revelation fears what they can’t control and hates what they don’t understand. After all, God is supposed to be love, right? But what is truly love? Those who picked up their weapons, snarling with bitter hatred, or those who carried and protected a little child throughout the long centuries, enduring persecution and ridicule, hoping that one day she’d wake up and the world would be better, happier, a place she and they could truly belong?”
Aine trembled, tears in her eyes, and Akio gently wiped them off with feather-light touches of wind. “I don’t mean to preach…” he apologised. “…but it’s an important lesson. Doesn’t that story move your heart? It moved mine, so I was happy to help rescue our little Goblin Princess. And I’ll be sure to help her and her people recover. But… that’s just a sad story that happens all the time, in many far-off places. Maybe you’re even watching now from a war-torn country, where tales like this are a daily occurrence. Doesn’t that mean we’re all the same, though? Just as some Goblins are wicked, there are many humans who strive to uphold their beliefs, protect each other. Just as some people have strayed and now consider killing innocent schoolchildren and those we need to stave off possible ruin as justified, I hope that there are many more people who have compassion, and will welcome the outcome of this sorrowful tale, despite this child not being human. Because she is still a living being and deserves a happy ending.”
“Can…” Aine chose that moment to speak. Her timid tone and childlike appearance evoked sympathy, and Yukiko resisted the urge to rush over and pat her head. I’ll leave it to Akio. He has it well in hand.
“…everyone really see and hear me?”
“Not everyone. But millions, tens of millions… maybe even a billion.” Akio explained, and Aine started counting on her fingers with her free hand.
“You said a million was… a thousand thousands. So… what’s a billion?”
“A thousand millions.” Akio chuckled, and Aine’s eyes went wide at the numbers beyond any scale she had ever imagined.
“See? She’s just like any ordinary child. Inquisitive, gets frightened easily, and just wants comfort and happiness. But again, I get it. If it was that easy, there’d be no suffering in the world. ‘We should look after our own, charity begins at home, they are too different to us’. I understand. I do. And I’ve been accused of hypocrisy. After all, I have many gifts now, such as my Healing, which I could be using to save lives even as we speak. But… it’s not my responsibility to sacrifice the happiness of my family by devoting all my time to it. Yet that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t do good deeds. But I’d rather address the root causes and make systemic change. I used to be a programmer, before all this. Nothing fancy, just a humble freelancer, doing odd jobs. But I know it’s more efficient to use off-the-shelf libraries and software than it is to code from scratch, and often just as good.”
As he talked, Yukiko was sucked in. She shared his vision, for Japan, and for the world. It was a heavy burden, Amaterasu’s Favour, but with the support of those she could trust, she now believed the grim future, her inevitable clash with the main body of the vile toad that killed Tsukiko, her dearest friend, would not lead to her end. Akio, Tsukiko, the others… they’ll never allow it. I was scared, like little Aine, but now, just like her, I’m free from my prison of solitude and fear, and ready to face the future…
“So yes, preserving our unique cultures, our identities… I’m already working closely with forces in Japan who wish nothing more than to protect the best of it. But change always comes. The Japan of today is vastly different even to the Japan of ten or twenty years ago. And this change is coming too. Spiritual beings from myths and legends will walk among us. Right now it’s merely a handful, and not easy for them. But in time the floodgates will open… so what are our options? Fight against them, because they aren’t like we are? Segregation, just because of differences? That’s not the Japan, not the world, we choose!”
As Yukiko nodded, he elaborated. “Yes, there will always be troubles, those that cannot integrate, that pose dangers. Like the scum who persecuted the little Goblin Princess here, turned their backs on their family and friends… those, we’ll take responsibility for, and defeat them. If they reform, they can be saved, but we won’t allow them to hurt innocent people. But… jobs, services putting food on the table, these things matter… and I assure you, the world can be better than it was before. Even now, work is progressing on addressing problems that plague our post-industrial society, such as recycling to address resource shortages and the growing waste accumulated by our burgeoning population. Power development, which relies on new spiritual technologies, will revolutionise everything from transportation to the batteries in your phones, and won’t contribute to global warming. The revitalisation of housing, allowing for the immigration of spiritual beings while improving quality of life for those of us already here. And of course, medical care. That’s not all… why, in the Seelie Court, where the brave Goblins who protected the Princess dwelt… there are many wonderful Faerie creatures, a number from British folklore and myth, though other cultures are represented too. One notable type are the Kobolds. A lot of people haven’t heard of them, but…”
Yukiko listened, curious as to where he was going with this.
“…they are rather akin to Dwarves, though frailer and a little more childlike. They are miners and craftsmen, making wonders, especially jewellery. But I’ve seen them carve ornate sculptures and make wonderful decorative art, as well as more utilitarian tools.”
Not the Kobolds I’ve seen, but… I see. Adherence. Subtle. I like it!
“This is not a case of all spiritual beings posing a danger. In fact, most of them are harmless, or even beneficial. I can see it now, wonders combining magic, for want of a better term, and our technology. Pollution, waste, even problems Physics deems unsolvable… all can be revolutionised, by clever, dextrous Kobolds, and wise, skilful Dwarves, among others. It’ll be a new industrial revolution, driving the world forwards! And… those that are strong, can fight… we need those too. As… beyond our borders, other civilisations lurk, who would do us ill. This is our world, and we need to protect it, but also… allow those who have always lived here, beyond our sight, their chance to shape its future too.” He took a deep breath, finishing up. “You’ve seen a number of miracles these last couple of days. And you’ll see more. And you’ll have time to raise your concerns, and maybe some of them will be valid, and we’d be happy to address them. And we’ll be working closely with Britain, our close ally, and I expect that they’ll be seeing the benefits of our technology soon. We do have… other… allies, who haven’t exactly been true to their word, but we won’t turn our backs on the people of that land due to the actions of some idiots in power. We will hold those who broke faith and put those I cherish at risk accountable though. In conclusion…”
He’s certainly hammering the point home. But it needs to be said. And winning the hearts and minds of the ordinary people of the world is important, now more than ever.
Tsurugi returned to her Tsukumogami form, clinging to Akio, and he also pulled down Aine from his shoulders, and Yukiko imagined it would be an image often replayed around the world, Akio with his daughter and… sister? Neither of which were human but were both rather adorable.
“…we mustn’t let fear of our differences divide us, nor must we force others to bow to our whims. Yes, there must be universal protections, the right to life and so on, but we must also celebrate our differences. Goblins are innocent, peaceful Fae at heart, just as we humans can’t be led astray by those of us who choose violence and wicked means, we can’t judge them all based on their rotten apples. Sylphs, Dryads, Dwarves, Elves, cunning Kobolds who dig the treasures of the earth and shape them with clever, dextrous childlike hands into many wonderous crafts… the world is a fascinating place. Japan has many strange and wonderful Yōkai too, but sometimes I envy Britain, you know.” Akio winked at the camera. “You also have a rich legacy of spiritual beings. Don’t let the fifteen hundred years of rewritten history fool you. The Fae are varied and unique but are by no means monsters. Do your research, and see…” He ruffled Aine’s hair. “…what you have to look forward to!”
“Wow…” Kanzaki-san cried, when Akio stepped back. “That was quite the speech, wasn’t it, Arisu-chan? Though I don’t think Akio-kun knows quite what ‘in conclusion’ means. That was a long one!”
“Yes. He is known to belabour his points. I sometimes wonder why everyone puts up with him.” Arisu-san’s tone was dry, but she was clearly just playing along with her idol co-presenter. “However he is not wrong. I too have seen many wonders, and… judging by appearances is useless. After all, those who betrayed me were famous, popular and attractive. What looks fair my hide foul rot in their hearts. I would rather befriend a strange spiritual being, disturbing to the eye, than put my trust in beautiful, yet false friends…”
“Oh, and thank you too, Princess Mikasa! And you, little Goblin!” Kanzaki-san addressed Aine, who blinked in surprise but nodded shyly, not sure what to make of her. “And you three as well.” She also thanked the Regalia, treating them as people. “It’s heartwarming to see Akio-kun doing what he does best. I can’t speak for all his plans, but… as one who has been saved by him before, I trust he’ll do his best!”
“In that case… Keiko-chan, please go to our audience questions. I am sure there must be innumerable ones waiting.” Arisu-san advised, and Yukiko was struck by how effortlessly she addressed Kanzaki-san far more informally and warmly than she would in her personal life.
“Great! Here’s the first one! Oh, it’s not really related to the matters discussed, but… Arisu-chan, a viewer from Saitama Prefecture wants to know if you’ll be returning to acting. Apparently he’s a big fan. Honestly, I wonder too!”
Arisu-san pursed her lips, before nodding. “Yes, at some point in the future I am likely to return to the screen. It was a passion of mine, until treachery and slander soured it. But for now, I have far too much to do. But rest assured, I shall not rest until I have been truly recognised for my talents.”
Yukiko nodded along as Kanzaki-san asked if she meant winning an Oscar. She was about to break into Hollywood before the scandals… and if anyone can, Arisu-san can…
“The next question is from a viewer from Osaka. They ask if the Goblin has a name?”
Akio glanced at Aine, who nodded slowly. “I’m Aine. Brilliant happiness. But… I’m alone now. My family, they…” Tears glimmered in her eyes, running down her pale green cheeks, and once more Akio gently wiped them away.
“I know it’s rough. But happiness will come again.” he promised, before addressing the cameras. “See? It’s just like I said. It’s our emotions and our thoughts that make us a person.”
“Next question…” Kanzaki-san changed the subject, before giggling. “…oh, you! This is an international viewer, from Britain, in fact! No wonder, Westerners are more open to these sorts of questions. They’re from Manchester, and they saw us on the BBC! We’re international!” She grinned proudly. “Anyway, they were wondering two things. Firstly, will we ever see footage from the mysterious lands where Goblins like Aine dwell? And secondly… they wondered if WTV programming was going to be expanding, and available in their country, and they suggest programmes such as biographies of the women in your life, Akio-kun, such as our Imperial Princess here!”
“I shall field the first question. As we explained during our broadcasts yesterday…” Arisu-san answered crisply. “…it will take time to establish a proper schedule for the channel. But we certainly do intend a well-rounded offering, and we shall be available internationally in the near future via your satellite or cable providers. As for footage of the Boundary…” She glanced at Akio, who nodded. “…there are technical challenges, however we will most certainly be producing such educational programming. For your final point…”
Akio laughed. “Yeah, my mom’s British, and she still has a craving for British TV now and then. I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to some behind-the-scenes footage of our lives, but… only for those that wished to appear. Quite a few of them are rather shy. But I bet Shaeula would be delighted to participate and would boast incessantly the whole time.”
“Yes, none would bar-bar her way to that!” Kanzaki-chan giggled.
“Of course…” Akio’s air was suddenly dangerous. “…if you are hoping for anything scandalous or salacious, don’t. It may seem hypocritical or unfair, but… they’re mine. I’ll love and protect them all forever!”
“A bold declaration.” Arisu-san glanced at Yukiko, her lips faintly trembling as she held in a smile at Yukiko’s embarrassed and delighted expression. “And I do agree. They are not celebrities, but there is certainly still room for some appearances on WTV, especially as a number have experience as a Chosen, or are indeed the sort of beings we have discussed today. I believe a program on Kobold and Dwarven craftsmanship might be an early entry, once we work out the hiccups in our methods of recording.”
Akio inclined his head, agreeing, and Arisu-san raised an eyebrow. “Oh, this question is for you, Keiko-chan. It is a viewer from Gifu Prefecture. They are asking you if despite everything, Akio-san is still your ideal man, and whether you are planning to quit AKB0048 for him? They are also curious about the… uniform.”
“Oh… you’ll make me blush.” Kanzaki-san waved a hand, fanning her slightly red face. “I’m an idol, I’m for the fans… but I’m also…” She glanced at Akio, who nodded. “…Adamant. That carries responsibilities too. I expect your questions will be answered another time, and in more depth.”
Yukiko agreed. It’s a good way to showcase the power and influence of Adamant to Japan. Already some members have interesting stories, such as the girls from Hanafubuki who fought to the death alongside Motoko and Natsumi… if it becomes an organisation the best and brightest of women seek to join, the advantages are clear longer-term. And… we have to think that way now. Though the immediate future was frightening, Yukiko found that lately, her thoughts were turned beyond that, to what lay after, perhaps even years in the future…
“As for my ideal man, I’ve not changed my mind.” Kanzaki-san tittered nervously. “Though again, it’s embarrassing you asking me when he’s sitting beside me! This is the second time this has happened. But I’m not alone in that… on the internet, there’s a lot of fan clubs and so forth springing up, although…” She teased Akio. “…how does it feel, knowing that Shaeula’s fan club is larger than yours?”
“It makes sense.” He chuckled wryly. “I know she’s popular with both men and women. Me… I expect I’m not well-liked among a lot of men.”
“No kidding!” Kanzaki-san agreed. “You’re feasting on steak while a lot of men can barely get a bowl of rice gruel. But that’s all right. I still like you!” she chuckled, before addressing the Regalia and Aine. “This must be a little boring for you all. Don’t worry, we’ve only got time for a couple more questions. Oh, this one’s good… a Londoner wants to know, just what did you mean when you said that Britain will be seeing the benefits soon?”
“There’s a lot I can’t speak of…” Akio suggested. “…because the time isn’t right. But I can say that once we have our technology up and running, and it’s been proven to work safely and as expected, Britain will be the next in line. We’re also stepping up the training of those that can perform Ether Healing soon, it’s quite the investment in time and resources, but… It’s like I said earlier, I can’t spend my entire life curing the sick. Even if I tried, there’d always be more. Instead, we hope to train others. In Japan, it’ll be dedicated to our own Princess Mikasa, while in Britain, it will be the Princess Eleanor Free Hospital. And this is only possible because I learned some of the techniques we’ll be teaching from the Fae. So in a way, I certainly owe Britain for that.”
Yukiko nodded. They’d talked about training medical professionals in Ether Healing and even the basics of Chirurgery. There were a great number of challenges, most notably their lack of ability to perceive aether, but… She glanced at Christina, who was sitting just out of the line of sight of the cameras. She winked, miming gouging out her eyes, which made Yukiko shudder. Yes, she’s… off-putting, certainly. But… it seems many lives can be saved through her sacrifices. Although, one can argue if it’s really a sacrifice or not when she’s doing it to appeal to Akio…
Other issues, such as the likely woeful aether reserves of any trained Ether Healers and Chirurgeons, stood in the way, but a training program to mitigate that was in the works. As another question was asked by the audience, Yukiko glanced at her watch. Not long now until this is over. Then tonight… I’m curious. The scene in the Fae Realms was spectacular enough this morning. But Shaeula promised the climax is something unmissable…
As Arisu-san was explaining something very technical that went over Yukiko’s head, about ‘how where the Astral and Material touched was likely to be akin to a four-dimensional manifold being expressed in three dimensions, appearing to change shape and size over time’ she wondered if Eleanor was watching. I wonder what she’ll think, considering Akio is already helping raise her profile, before they’ve even announced their engagement? If I know her… I imagine she’ll be mortified and pretend to be angry about it, but will be secretly delighted…
