On a Stormy Night, the Campus Belle Knocked on My Door Seeking Shelter
Chapter 251: Summer, Beach, Fireworks, and a Confession
"Really? Thank you!" Zhao Yuanyuan looked up at him in surprise. Her eyes, sparkling in the moonlight, seemed to shine even brighter than the stars in the sky.
She carefully took the small, perfect, heart-shaped shell from his palm as if it were a rare treasure. She examined the golden lines on it, the corners of her mouth curving up uncontrollably. "It’s so cute. I’ll take good care of it."
She took out a small, clear pouch she carried with her, which held a few pretty pebbles and candy wrappers. She gently placed the precious shell inside, her movements delicate and filled with reverence.
Watching her treasure the small gift so much, Lin Yu’an felt an inexplicable warmth and a subtle flutter in his heart.
He suddenly felt that Zhao Yuanyuan’s quietness and focus... wasn’t boring at all. In fact, it held a special appeal.
The way she was now focused on the shell, carefully putting it away, had a pure and tranquil beauty.
"Let’s go," Lin Yu’an’s voice softened unconsciously. "It’s probably time to head back. The others should be heading back soon too."
"Okay." Zhao Yuanyuan carefully put the small pouch away and walked beside him. This time, the distance between them seemed just a little bit closer than before.
She clutched the small pouch with the shell, a warmth spreading through her palm, as if she were holding not just a bag of pretty trinkets, but a silent, gentle companionship.
The moonlight cast their shadows on the sand as they walked side by side, stretching them long and drawing them close.
Four pairs of figures cast shadows, long and short, along the endless coastline. Wrapped in the gentle embrace of the moon, the stars, and the waves, each was lost in their own little world.
The secrets of youth, hazy feelings of affection, and hopes for the future all drifted gently on the evening breeze during this quiet, beautiful island night.
And the grand fireworks display tomorrow was destined to light the most brilliant stage for these quietly growing emotions.
The four pairs made their way back to the inn one after another. All eight of them gathered in the common lounge for a while, sharing the small discoveries and feelings from their walk (while tacitly hiding the important parts, of course).
The air was filled with the unique salty dampness of the seaside, the faint, lingering scent of barbecue, and a shared, unspoken anticipation for the next evening.
Chen Mo and Su Yuqing’s gazes met more frequently, their fingertips occasionally brushing as they passed drinks, a silent, sweet understanding between them.
Su Yuqing’s heart began to race again at the thought of wearing the light pink bikini tomorrow. Meanwhile, Chen Mo, watching the soft glow of the light on her profile, felt his own heart beating faster than usual.
Huang Mao watched Zhao Yueyue artlessly sharing the colorful sea glass she’d found with Zhao Yuanyuan, and gave himself another pep talk. ’Tomorrow! When the fireworks reach their peak! I have to say it!’
Zhao Yueyue, however, was still laughing about Huang Mao’s "profound" act in the coconut grove, completely oblivious to the surging emotions of the boy beside her, the one who usually just bickered and argued with her.
Although Zhou Hao and Qu Danwan weren’t sitting right next to each other out in the open, their eyes would occasionally meet, each time with a shy and sweet smile.
Lin Yu’an sat quietly in a corner, his gaze gentle as he watched Zhao Yuanyuan carefully fiddle with the small pouch containing the heart-shaped shell.
Zhao Yuanyuan could feel his gaze, and her cheeks grew warm. But inside, she felt a sense of peace and comfort, as if a warm hand were gently soothing her heart.
For the first time, Lin Yu’an felt that when he was with this quiet girl, time itself seemed to flow with exceptional gentleness.
As the night deepened, everyone finally said their goodnights and returned to their own rooms.
The island night was exceptionally peaceful, with only the ceaseless sound of waves lapping against the shore, creating a white noise that lulled them to sleep.
Su Yuqing lay in bed, tossing and turning. She repeatedly played out the next night’s scene in her mind, her fingers unconsciously stroking the light pink bikini folded by her pillow, a mix of nervousness and anticipation churning within her.
Chen Mo gazed at the moonlit, shimmering sea outside his window, his eyes deep in thought. He silently tightened and loosened his grip on a small velvet box in his pocket.
In his bathroom, Huang Mao secretly practiced his confession in front of the mirror, his expression both exaggerated and stiff.
Zhao Yueyue, meanwhile, was excitedly chattering with her sister, Zhao Yuanyuan, about what to wear to the fireworks festival, as energetic as ever.
Lying in bed, Zhou Hao closed his eyes, his mind replaying the moment Qu Danwan said, "Actually, I feel the same way you do." A dopey smile spread across his face, and he felt like he was floating on a cloud.
Qu Danwan also found it hard to sleep. Thinking of how nervous, clumsy, and yet sincere Zhou Hao had been filled her heart with sweetness.
Zhao Yuanyuan lay on her side, listening to her sister’s chatter. By the light of the moon, she opened the small pouch again and looked at the little heart-shaped shell inside, a serene, almost imperceptible smile on her lips.
She carefully placed the pouch by her pillow, savoring this small but solid piece of happiness.
Lin Yu’an was also staring at the ceiling. For some reason, the image of Zhao Yuanyuan cherishing the shell was still vivid in his mind. A vague, unprecedented feeling was quietly stirring in his heart, making it skip a beat.
Inside these eight young hearts, palpitations, secrets, and expectations were brewing, all ready to bloom beneath the grand fireworks the next night.
The island night, wrapped in their anticipation, deepened... One by one, the eight of them drifted off to sleep, finally sinking into deep, beautiful dreams, waiting to welcome a day that promised a spectacular night.
「...」
The morning sun pierced through the sea-blue curtains, gently waking the sleeping island.
The sound of the waves was constant, yet it seemed to carry a new, unusual rhythm of excitement, heralding the main event of the evening.
Su Yuqing’s eyes opened before her alarm even went off.
The tossing and turning of the previous night hadn’t left her feeling tired. Instead, it was replaced by a highly focused sense of anticipation.
The first thing she did was look at the light pink bikini by her pillow, and her heart began to race uncontrollably again.
’Today’s the day!’
At breakfast, the eight of them sat around a table. The atmosphere was even more lively than the day before, yet each person’s mind was racing with their own thoughts.
The conversation revolved almost entirely around that night’s fireworks festival.
"I heard this year’s fireworks were designed by the team from the Imperial Capital that created the fireworks show for the Imperial Capital Olympics!" Zhao Yueyue said, biting into a piece of bread, her eyes sparkling. "It’s going to be super spectacular!"
"Of course it is," Huang Mao said, trying to affect his usual nonchalant air, but his eyes kept darting toward Zhao Yueyue, and his voice was a few notches higher than normal. "It’d better be spectacular, or our coming all this way would be a waste!"
"The inn owner said the best viewing spot for this year’s fireworks festival is a secret cape near the lighthouse. The view is perfect, completely unobstructed, and not many people know about it," Chen Mo added calmly. His gaze swept over Su Yuqing, and when he saw the slight blush on the tips of her ears, the corner of his mouth curved into a subtle smile.
