On a Stormy Night, the Campus Belle Knocked on My Door Seeking Shelter
Chapter 249: Summer, Beach, Fireworks, and Confession
Neither of them spoke. They just walked in silence, feeling the cool seawater and soft sand under their feet. Every so often, their eyes would meet, and everything was understood without a word.
The sense of distance that had kept them apart seemed to melt away with the setting sun, leaving only a quiet, unspoken sense of peace and intimacy.
For dinner, the guesthouse provided a self-serve barbecue on the beach.
The guesthouse owner had set up grills on the sand and provided a rich spread of ingredients.
The guys took charge of starting the fire and grilling, while the girls were busy putting food on skewers and preparing vegetables and sauces.
With the CRACKLE of charcoal, the aroma of grilled meat soon began to mix with the sea breeze and drift through the air.
Huang Mao and Zhou Hao bickered, blaming each other for a burnt chicken wing, while Zhao Yueyue fanned the flames from the sidelines.
Lin Yu’an and Zhao Yuanyuan, meanwhile, quietly grilled corn and mushrooms. Despite being novices, they moved with the surprising confidence of seasoned experts.
Chen Mo’s grilled squid and scallops were a huge hit. He always made sure to give the best, most tender pieces to Su Yuqing the moment they were ready.
In return, Su Yuqing handed him the honey-glazed chicken wings she had so carefully prepared.
As they exchanged food, their fingertips brushed once more. This time, Su Yuqing didn’t pull her hand away. Instead, she gave him a sweet smile.
Night fell, and the sky filled with twinkling stars.
Everyone gathered around the bonfire (a safe fire pit provided by the guesthouse), eating barbecue, sipping cold drinks, and talking about everything under the sun as they dreamed of their futures after the college entrance exams.
The firelight danced across their eight young, relaxed faces, each bearing a different smile.
It felt as though the beauty of youth itself had taken form in this very moment.
Zhao Yueyue watched Chen Mo and Su Yuqing sitting side by side, the firelight dancing in their eyes. She couldn’t resist nudging Huang Mao beside her with an elbow and whispering, "Hey, look at those two. Tsk, tsk. With this vibe, there’s definitely going to be a good show at the fireworks festival tomorrow night!"
Huang Mao, his mouth full of grilled meat, glanced at Chen Mo and Su Yuqing before stealing a look at Zhao Yueyue.
This time, his usual carefree expression was gone, replaced by an uncharacteristic seriousness and a barely perceptible flicker of emotion.
’This girl is so focused on watching other people’s drama,’ he thought. ’She has no idea there’s a show waiting for her at the fireworks festival tomorrow night, too.’
Though Zhao Yueyue’s muttering was quiet, Su Yuqing’s sharp hearing picked it up. She instinctively glanced at Chen Mo, only to find him already looking at her, his deep eyes exceptionally bright in the firelight.
Su Yuqing’s heart couldn’t help but beat faster.
’Tomorrow night’s fireworks festival...’ The thought resurfaced, sharp and clear, bringing with it a powerful flutter of anticipation and a hint of secret nervousness.
She quietly clenched her hands in her lap, feeling the faint dampness in her palms.
’Tomorrow, I’ll finally have the courage to wear that pale pink bikini, the more daring one.’
And that important moment seemed to draw closer with every star that grew brighter in the night sky.
The first full and joyous day of their island trip came to a close.
Filled with the coolness of the sea breeze, the warmth of the sun, the satisfaction of a seafood feast, and the lingering heat of the bonfire, they were all buzzing with anticipation for the grand fireworks show the next night. After eating their fill and spending some more time happily chatting and playing games by the fire, the group of eight decided to go for a walk to let their food settle.
The eight of them tacitly split into four pairs, one guy and one girl each. They began their after-dinner stroll along the coastline, treading on the soft sand under the light of the moon and the scattered lamps from the distant guesthouse.
The waves provided an eternal soundtrack, gently washing over the sand with a peaceful rhythm.
Lin Yu’an wasn’t sure how he’d ended up paired with Zhao Yuanyuan. ’Maybe it’s because we’re the only single ones,’ he mused.
But he was a gentle person and very considerate of her feelings, so he didn’t question it. He simply kept her company, strolling quietly near the guesthouse.
Still, he worried she might be bored with him, so he made an effort to find things to talk about as they walked.
But he didn’t know that the girl’s eyes never left him. No matter what they talked about, she looked completely engrossed.
They walked slowly, falling into last place behind the others.
Ahead of them were Su Yuqing and Chen Mo.
Moonlight spilled across the land like liquid mercury, spreading a shimmering ribbon of crushed silver across the water’s surface that stretched to the horizon.
The sand beneath their feet was damp and firm. Each step left a shallow footprint that was quickly and gently erased by the lapping waves.
Neither of them spoke, simply walking in silence and enjoying the tranquility, far from the earlier noise and excitement.
The boisterous energy of the day had settled, leaving only the sound of the waves and their own soft breathing.
Su Yuqing stole a glance at Chen Mo beside her. The moonlight traced the sharp contour of his profile—a straight nose and a smooth jawline. His expression was uncharacteristically relaxed.
"The sea breeze feels so nice at night," Su Yuqing finally said, her voice as light as a feather, breaking the silence.
"Yeah," Chen Mo agreed, turning to look at her. His deep eyes were like tranquil lakes in the moonlight. "It’s much cooler than during the day."
His gaze fell on the slight upturn of her lips. They fell silent again, but the atmosphere wasn’t awkward. Instead, a tacit understanding flowed between them.
Every so often, their arms would gently brush against each other, and this time, Su Yuqing didn’t pull away.
Sensing her silent permission, Chen Mo tentatively reached out and gently hooked his pinky finger around hers.
With both of them in little more than swimsuits, the intimate act of holding hands felt completely different than it ever had before. A shared shyness hung in the air as their fingers tentatively touched.
Su Yuqing’s heart leaped at his touch, and she surprised herself by boldly responding in kind.
She felt the warmth of his skin against hers. She lowered her head slightly, unable to suppress the smile spreading across her lips as a faint pink blush colored her cheeks in the moonlight.
And so they walked on in silence, first with pinkies linked, then with their hands fully clasped, letting the sound of the waves drown out the frantic beating of their hearts.
All their anticipation and nervousness about the next night melted away into the silent intimacy of the moment.
Over with Huang Mao and Zhao Yueyue, Huang Mao was uncharacteristically quiet instead of his usual boisterous self.
He led Zhao Yueyue away from the shoreline and into a grove of swaying palm trees at the edge of the beach.
The moonlight, filtered through the broad palm fronds, cast mottled patterns of light and shadow that danced across their bodies.
The air was filled with the fresh scent of plants, mingling with the salty tang of the sea breeze.
"Hey, why so quiet? Trying to act all mysterious?" Zhao Yueyue nudged Huang Mao with her elbow, trying to break a silence that felt unnatural to her.
’Huang Mao’s acting weird tonight,’ she thought. ’His eyes keep darting around, and he keeps stealing glances at me.’
"Who—who’s acting mysterious!" Huang Mao cleared his throat, trying to regain his usual bravado. "I’m just... working on an important... uh... joke!" He’d almost let the real reason slip and had to change tracks fast.
"An ’important joke’? Since when do those two words go together?" Zhao Yueyue snorted. "Besides, you can stop ’working on’ it. Your jokes are so lame they give me goosebumps."
