Chapter 41: Coach

  • Next Chapter

The coaches left the lobby as early as seven a.m.

Three dark buses, company logos discreet on the sides, idled under the building’s overhang while people climbed aboard with overnight bags and the particular silence of a mandatory trip no one had voted for.

Kai boarded the second coach in the soft body, soft sweater, soft face, the quiet intern’s usual anonymity pulled tight against the early cold. He took a seat two rows from the back on the aisle side and set the small bag at his feet.

Priya boarded the same coach and sat three rows forward without looking at him.

Marcus boarded the first coach.

Sloane took a window seat near the middle of the second and opened a folder that did not need opening.

The rest of the floor filled the remaining seats in the same staggered, careful pattern they used in elevators, close enough to be colleagues, far enough to avoid conversation.

The new hire sat down beside Kai.

She was young, mid-twenties, dark hair pulled back, a navy coat still buttoned against the morning. Her name tag from the lobby check-in still clung to the coat: "Natasha Okoro — Analyst, Risk Support".

She had started three weeks earlier.

Kai had spoken to her twice, both times about clause formatting. She had been precise and quiet and had not yet learned which residual heats the building carried.

She glanced at him once, then at the empty seats further forward.

"Is this one taken?"

"No," Kai said. "It’s fine."

She sat.

The coach doors closed, the engine engaged, the building slid away behind them as the convoy pulled into morning traffic and turned north.

For the first forty minutes almost no one spoke above a murmur.

Someone near the front tried a playlist through a portable speaker and was asked, politely, to use headphones.

The windows filled with the gradual thinning of the city, warehouses, then trees, then longer stretches of highway.

Natasha opened a paperback and did not turn the page for a long time.

At the first rest stop the coaches emptied in a slow wave.

Coffee.

Bathrooms.

A few cigarettes at the edge of the lot. Kai stayed in his seat.

Natasha returned first, sat down again, and closed the book.

"You’re the quiet one from 27," she said.

"That’s the general consensus."

"People say you know the contracts better than the people who write them."

"People exaggerate."

She almost smiled. "I’m supposed to shadow the risk team for the next quarter. They put me on the same cabin list as you and two others. Cabin 7."

"I saw."

"Is it going to be weird?"

Kai looked at her. His stayed neutral. "Everything about this firm is a little weird. The cabin will just be a smaller version of it."

She laughed once, quiet, and looked out the window as the coaches started moving again.

An hour later the highway had narrowed and the trees had thickened.

Most of the coach had settled into headphones, sleep, or the blank stare of people enduring a trip they had not chosen.

The seat beside Kai remained occupied.

Natasha had shifted slightly toward the window, one knee drawn up, the paperback forgotten in her lap.

Natasha spoke without turning her head.

"You’re staring."

"Am I."

"A little." She glanced at him sideways. "I’m not complaining. I’m just new enough that I still notice."

Kai kept his voice low.

The seats in front of them were occupied by two analysts who had been asleep since the rest stop.

The seats behind were empty.

The engine noise covered anything short of a raised voice.

"How new is new enough?"

"Three weeks. Long enough to learn the coffee machine and the fact that no one explains the real rules until you break one." She paused. "Is this the part where you tell me to be careful?"

"This is the part where I ask if you want me to stop looking."

She held his gaze for a second longer than workplace conversation allowed.

Then she shifted her weight, let her coat fall open, and angled her knees slightly toward the aisle, enough to create a private pocket of space between her body and the window.

"I didn’t say stop."

Kai’s soft hand moved slowly.

He checked the aisle once.

The coach was a long tunnel of headrests and the low hum of tires.

No one was watching.

He let his fingers rest lightly on her knee over the fabric of her trousers, then slid higher when she did not pull away.

Natasha’s breath changed. She kept her eyes on the window.

"Here?" she whispered.

"Unless you tell me no."

She did not tell him no.

His hand slipped between her thighs, found the heat of her through the fabric, and pressed in slow, deliberate circles.

Natasha’s fingers tightened on the paperback.

Her hips shifted once, almost imperceptibly, giving him better access. Kai worked the button of her trousers open under the cover of her coat, eased the zipper down, and slid his hand inside.

She was already warm.

Already wet.

His fingers moved over the damp cotton of her underwear, then under it, finding her clit with the soft pad of one finger.

Natasha’s exhale was shaky.

She spread her knees a fraction wider and stared hard at the trees moving past the glass.

"Quiet," Kai murmured.

"I’m trying."

He stroked her in tight, exact circles, his body angled toward her as if they were only talking.

Two fingers slid lower, gathered the wetness, and pushed into her in a slow, continuous press.

Natasha’s free hand gripped the edge of the seat.

Her inner walls clenched around the intrusion.

Kai fucked her with his fingers in a steady, shallow rhythm timed to the motion of the coach, the heel of his hand grinding against her clit on every stroke.

"Someone’s going to"

"No one is looking." His voice stayed soft, almost conversational. "You’re going to come on my hand before the next rest stop, and you’re going to do it without making a sound. Clear?"

She nodded once, sharp.

He added a third finger and curled them.

Natasha’s thighs trembled.

Her breathing went short and controlled, the way people breathed when they were trying not to be heard.

Kai kept the pace exact, relentless, the soft hand working her under the coat while the rest of the coach continued its ordinary trip upstate.

Her cunt tightened hard around his fingers.

She bit her lower lip and came in a long, silent pulse, hips stuttering against his hand, eyes glassy and fixed on the window.

He worked her through it until the last tremor passed, then withdrew slowly, smoothed the underwear back into place, and zipped her trousers with careful fingers.

Natasha sat very still. A faint flush sat high on her cheeks. She did not look at him immediately.

When she did, her voice was rough.

"That was—"

"Quiet," Kai said. "And useful. The cabin is going to be smaller than this coach. If you decide you want more of that, you find me after the fireside mixer. If you don’t, we pretend this was a long drive and nothing else."

She swallowed. "And if I do find you?"

"Then we stop pretending."

Natasha looked back out the window.

The trees had grown denser.

A sign for the next rest stop flashed past. She buttoned her coat closed and picked up the paperback again with hands that were not entirely steady.

"I’ll think about it," she said.

"Think carefully. Four days is a long time to change your mind in either direction."

The coach slowed for the exit.

Around them people began to stir, stretching, checking phones, preparing for the second short stop before the final stretch to Pinecrest Lakes.

Kai wiped his hand discreetly on a tissue from his bag and sat back in the soft body’s usual posture, anonymous and quiet.

Natasha did not move seats.

She also did not open the book.

The coaches pulled into the rest-stop lot in a line.

Doors opened.

Cold air rushed in.

Priya walked past their row on the way out and glanced once at the space between them, then kept walking.
