Chapter 2233 Operation Dreaded Winter -Part 21

But it was just too ugly.

The Demon Rats for the first time in this entire expedition, risked their lives entirely to see what was beyond the walls even though the Demon Horde and the System had the technology to know what was in all those areas. It was a confirmation survival test for the Demon Rats too since the System did promise some system points as a reward to be able to learn and act without the power of the System.

"More barricades in the city and into there's two sets of walls within the Inner Quarters too!" The Demon Rat scout reported after struggling with much effort just to have a peek at the top of the outer walls. It knew while it was currently using the mobility gear it had to reach its peak, there would be a moment when it would have to descend. And that was when the living breathing fortress wall of Ends would bring its prey with its tentacles into the belly of the monster. (In fact, the entire wall is its belly)

And in order to improve the chances of their Demon Rat Vanguards, the Demon Hordes were now using cannons to pulverise the wall...only to be stopped by one of the many mages' anti physical barriers that had been used to keep the wall alive. "Captain, we should just use our standard cannons instead of these inferior options that lowered the firepower capacity." One of the cannoneers suggested but the Orc Captain shook his head.

"It's fine. There are at the very least 280 Demons to the one human in this particular battle. Let's give our fellow comrades some breathing space to ensure that they have a chance to work out all the boredom from waiting." The Orc Captain said and told the cannoneer to continue firing just to disrupt the mages' barriers and cause additional mental fatigue to them.

Eventually, most of the Demon Rat Vanguards had been killed and slaughtered since they were the first to move out and thus when the line was thin enough, the goblins were the next to move ahead along with a few companies of humanoids from the Demopolis and Pandapolis. They were not as mobile as the Demon Rats and so their first wave to encounter was undoubtedly the golems.

Only a few of the quicker Demon Rats were able to evade the Golem's range of attack and proceeded to fight against the renewed armoured defenders. This time, the human archers took the initiative to attack as the spirit defenders did not get damaged by the physical arrows and such arrows did not pierce the golem's thick hard defence.

They did not aim at the Demon Rats because they were too fast even for the archers. If they were to send out their first volley, those Demon Rats would have already been out of range from the arrow's landing. On the other hand, it's not the same for the goblins and humanoids. The thick snowfall and the weather thus far had made movement difficult for the Demon Horde as well.

They were impeded by the thick and high soft snowfall, causing them to be quite a target for the human elite archers from afar. Each volley could easily kill off at least 10-15% of the current Demon Wave and when they saw such a success, most of them regained their morale, thinking that this was doable even though they could not see what was beyond the gentle fog from afar.

But every kill is still a kill and they took it in strife, knowing that they should count their blessings that their current tactic works. If the temporary barricades beyond the city walls were to fall that easily, there would be no hope for the Capital of Ends at all.

Soon, when the armoured spirit defenders were seen to be rather useful despite sadden by the fact that even the goblins were able to counter them, the mages continuously summoned more at the expense of the capital's luxury resource. The use of jewels and other expensive items had been held as collateral and catalyst for the summoning of such spirit defenders. And this was not just normal armoured defenders, they were imbued by the characteristics of the items that had been used for the summoning process.

Some of the spirit defenders were hard as diamonds or even had the power of elements through the channelling of those earthen jewels. Yet at the same time. they did not know this was a double edge sword that they were doing. The humanoids that entered the battlefield were jewel manipulation experts. Yes, the Topaz, Diamond, Sapphire and other Jewel themed soldiers were in the mix of this current Demonic Wave. When they realised that these spirit defenders were using the very same powers as they were, they were the first to be targeted.

And when the spirit defenders died, they dropped the half spent jewels on the ground, giving the Jewelled armoured regiment more ammunition for them to use. They were elated that they did not need to spend their precious jewels just for this stupid fight that did not warrant much benefits other than a mass exercise for the minions of Jin. True, they would gain some System Points after this endeavour but that did not mean that they have to spend more than they should.

In fact, some were thinking that dying would be a more cost effective way of living through this mass minion exercise but when they saw those jewels, it felt like they could finally rampage a little before dying.

Your journey continues on empire

Which they did with much pleasure.

It was suffice to say that the first wave of demons was able to defeat the Golems and Spirit Defenders with much ease and the next was the swarm of exploding strays. What lies after that was yet to be known especially when the Demon Rats were rushing to scout more of the area. However, there was nothing much to worry about, there were many more Demons waiting for their turn in this battle against the people of Ends and their allies.
