Chapter 2220 Operation Dreaded Winter -Part 8
It was not an understatement to say that the young Demon Rats had broken through the gates all by themselves. Despite the inadequate defence team from Trin, the King did put up quite a bit of notice and money to ensure that most of the walls had been filled with human bodies.
Even though most on the walls had no experience and were there to fill the numbers, it still got the job done by throwing arrows, magic and even rocks at the Demon Rats. As long it did delay them even just by a second, those defenders were getting the job done.
However, such an expectation did not help the group at all because ultimately, their morale was shattered the moment the first Demon Rat had managed to climb up the walls with their mobility gear sets and scared the hell out of their wits with their arrival.
From then on, the flimsy defence line shattered almost completely despite their hurling of defensive spells onto the incoming Demon Rats. Perhaps most of them had not seen demons before and were more used to fighting low level monsters and humans so the scare factor had increased tremendously that they were running around like headless chickens.
Only some parts of the walls maintained their defence line a tad longer due to the fact that they were manned by mercenaries. They were able to call out their commands and people still listened to them until more of the Demon Rats appeared.
And that was not the catalyst of the defence line breaking down. As said previously, the Demon Rats were not just run out of the mill minions. It was precisely because they were born and bred within the System instances, that their training regimen was as intensively as the Rifle Mages that Jin had given. In fact, it was on par on a sufficient level that the Demon Rats were just at a level where they would not be taken down so easily and all of them were eager to want to show off their skills.
Without a doubt, their skills were so polished when it came to killing that they had forgotten to act like demons, shouting and screaming incessantly to scare the people. Yet, that killing alone was more than sufficient to bring screams and shouts from the victims as each stroke of their 'demon' blades was more than enough to make those defenders realise that there was no escape from them at all especially when they were being surrounded from the outside.
In fact, the reality of them being surrounded and the Demon Rats being this efficient in killing their targets had made the remaining defenders note that even if they were to struggle and survive this particular wave, they were considered just the grunts of the horde. More were still patiently waiting to learn the outcome of the battle that had just started.
Despair instantly set in even for the veteran mercenaries and the only thing that those defenders who continued to stay on the walls were only driven by not dying a meaningless death or in hopes that their efforts would not be wasted when the actual military force came in.
But with the current situation in Ends, it looked like they would never get to see or learn that their reinforcement would never come. In less than an hour, the entire first layer of the wall had been breached and all that was left between the Demon Rats and the centre of the capital was just the outer quarters, another wall and the inner quarters of the capital.
It was a standard layout but orders had been given from the top that they had to be thorough in proceeding with the massacre. It was also a show of power to make people in the outer quarters panic and quiver at the sight of the Demon Horde.
Eventually, a number of the defenders ran to 'reinforce' the second layer while also reporting the situation to them and as much as the King of Trin had wished to slaughter those dissidents and runaways in the heat of battle, he too had acknowledged that they needed as many troops as they could to ensure that they could survive longer.
At the same time, the nobles and people in the inner quarters of the capital had decided to write off the outer quarters as 'taken' by the Demon Horde. Thus, the mages in the inner layer had started to chant destructive spells to bring down the Demon Rats that were on the wall. This enabled them to kill a number of the Demon Rats but to their surprise, those Demons did not run away or even pounce towards the inner wall.
Instead, they continued their search on the outer wall to ensure that every single human on it was dead like pieces of clockwork. The defenders thought that they were just too scared to approach them, thinking that the humans had booty trapped the cities until one of the mages who was observing the entire situation noticed that that was not the case.
They were merely making sure that no one was surviving to tell the tale and that theory was further cemented when the Demon Rats did not care about the commotion that was happening in the outer quarters as they tried to flee into the inner quarters despite the fierce resistance and firm hold of the gates to prevent anybody else to go in. The nobles and the lucky ones who did had decided that those desperately trying to enter to be the buffer for them. Thus, the mage observer noticed that the Demon Rats were not attracted by the attention of all those humans and instead went door to door to systematically eradicate the humans.
Of course, he thought that they were finding something at first but soon enough, the mage understood that was not the case. Each time the Demon Rat had finished clearing the house, they went to throw out the bodies on their doors and even put a mark with the blood of the dead bodies to show that it had been cleared.
It was then the mage observer understood that their time in Trin was limited as mercy was not something the Demon Hordes were about to give.
