NTR: Barbarian Harem Conquest
Chapter 331: Analysis
The scarred woman had already given the order, but the ring had not fully opened.
Spears remained in hand.
Eyes remained on Kane’s empty palm and the axe he still had not taken off his shoulder.
Kane looked at them properly this time, at the paint, the half-naked readiness, the identical bone charms at throats and belts, the fear sitting under the aggression like a second skin.
"You can rest at the Elven empire using my name," he said.
"Sylvander’s outer posts will not turn away a band that arrives with that word and keeps its weapons pointed at the ground. Or you can go to Menual. The people there will take you in without making you kneel for the privilege. Both places sit behind walls that are already part of the line I am building."
A younger voice from the left edge of the ring cut in, sharp with suspicion.
"Why help us? You walked in here talking about spears and clocks. Now you offer beds in city ground. What do you take in return?"
"I am not helping," Kane said.
"I am preparing for the worst. If the sky breaks while you are still running between warm stones and empty camps, you die in the trees, and I lose bodies that could have held a stretch of wall. This is arithmetic. Not charity."
The scarred woman studied him for another long breath.
Around her the band shifted, paint-streaked faces turning the offer over the way hungry people turned over unfamiliar meat.
"We will decide," she said.
"Without you standing in our light. Walk, throne-taker. If a runner comes to your post, it will be because we chose it, not because you left a pretty path."
Kane inclined his head once and moved.
This time the half-circle broke cleanly.
No one threw.
No one followed.
He put the outcrop and the painted bodies behind him and did not look back until the brush had swallowed the clearing whole.
He didn’t turn toward Sylvander.
"System. Passive sweep. Wide circuit. I want whatever else this belt is hiding before I take a report home."
[Passive mode engaged]
[Radius extended]
[Alert threshold: residual corruption, non-natural heat, organized movement]
Kane cut north and then east, keeping the warm outcrop fixed in his mental map while he gave the surrounding ground a wider berth than a direct return required.
The forest stayed too quiet.
Birdsound came in thin scraps and died again.
He walked until the system pulsed a second marker half a kilometer off the original camp line, weak, dirty, already fading.
The site was a shallow pit in a break between roots.
Scorched earth.
A crust of black glass where something had burned hot enough to melt what should not melt under ordinary flame.
No tools left behind.
Only the clean, ugly fact of a fire that had been meant to erase rather than cook.
Kane crouched at the edge and held his good hand over the glass. Faint heat still lifted from it, weaker than the outcrop, older by hours.
"Reading."
[Corruption: Present, decaying]
[Classification: low-grade, non-active]
[Pattern: deliberate incineration of traces]
[Note: too thorough for standard camp disposal. Too weak for an open devil manifestation. Intermediate signature.]
"Someone taught them to burn the evidence," Kane said. "Or something did."
[Probability of external instruction: elevated]
[Ward-charms previously observed are consistent with crude anti-attention craft]
[Effect range: lesser probes and low-grade tracking]
[Effect against true manifestation: negligible]
Kane turned one of the facts over in his head while the system finished logging the pit.
"So the charms keep small things from looking too hard, and the fire cleans what the charms cannot hide. That is not a band inventing superstition in the dark. That is a response pattern."
[Agreed. Recommend treating the forest belt as pre-pressured rather than merely frightened of Host reputation.]
"Flag both sites. If this signature repeats closer to Sylvander’s markers before we cast off, I want to know before the boat leaves the harbor."
[Flagged. Monitoring window remains active through departure.]
Kane stood, brushed ash from his palm, and finally turned toward the long route home.
The brace had begun to ache in the dull way of an injury that had been ignored for too many hours.
Mjoldr sat heavy on his shoulder.
Behind him the empty camp, the warm stone, the painted ring, and the black-glass pit formed a single ugly picture: the belt was already adapting to a pressure the coalition had only smelled at the edges.
He reached Sylvander’s outer markers near dusk.
The guest manor’s yard lamps were lit.
Training sounds had died down into the lower noise of evening meals and gear checks.
Kane crossed the threshold into the main hall and did not have to announce himself.
The household read his face the way a pack read a hunter returning from the tree line.
Misha set down her pen before he had fully closed the door behind him.
"Full report. Now. You were gone long enough that the passive maps started looking like excuses."
’What a bully...’
Thora was already on her feet, compact axe within reach, eyes moving over the brace and the dust on his trousers.
"Do I need to armor up, or did the forest decide to be reasonable for once?"
Sira lay along a bench with the new bow across her stomach, orange hair a mess, expression stuck between boredom and accusation.
"If this is another speech about empty camps and how no one wanted to fight you, I am going to start charging a listening fee. I have been waiting through schedules and harbor lists and your serious face for two days."
Kane took the cup of water Firlia pressed into his good hand without ceremony, drank, and set it down on the table hard enough to get the rest of the room’s attention.
"Cluster B was empty when I arrived. Stew still warm. Child’s charm left on a bedroll. Tracks in three directions. The cleanest trail ended at a stone outcrop that does not belong on my map of that belt and radiates heat under shade."
"No one was there?"
"A few. The band ambushed me on the way out, fourteen plus extras, painted, half-ready for a claim fight. They were afraid under it. Stories about Berakamon had turned into panic. I did not escalate. I offered Sylvander or Menual as ground they could use under my name if the trees became untenable. They let me walk."
"You didn’t kill them?"
"I am a changed man."
