NTR: Barbarian Harem Conquest
Chapter 329: Abandoned Camp
Kane adjusted course and followed the creek bed until the system marker pulsed harder at the edge of his vision.
The trees thinned into a packed clearing that had been lived in recently.
Hide tents stood in a rough ring around a central fire pit.
A weapons rack leaned near the largest tent with spears and notched axes still in their slots.
Ash in the pit looked only a few hours old.
’Is someone here?’
Kane stopped at the tree line with Mjoldr resting against his shoulder and let the system sweep the space before he stepped into the open.
[Scan complete]
[Humanoid signatures: None active inside camp perimeter]
[Activity: fire pit, cook pot, bedding]
[Animal noise floor: suppressed beyond normal woodland variance]
[Devil-taint markers: None detected]
"Empty," Kane said under his breath.
"You marked fourteen."
[Correct. Signatures were present at last sweep. Current reading shows departure within the last two hours. No combat residue.]
He walked in slowly, empty hand visible out of habit even though no one remained to see it.
The cook pot still held a thick stew that had barely started to skin over.
Someone had taken it off the flame in a hurry and left it where it sat.
Bedrolls inside the nearest tent were thrown open rather than packed.
A small wooden charm rested on one of the pads, carved into a rough circle with a notch at the top, the kind of thing a child kept for luck or a ward against bad dreams.
Kane picked it up, turned it once in his fingers, then set it back exactly where he found it.
"They left food warm and a child’s charm on the bedding," he said.
"That is not a planned move to winter ground."
[Agreed. Pattern consistent with rapid evacuation. Tracks exit in three primary directions. Quality of the trails degrades after forty meters on the eastern and southern lines. Northern line remains readable longer.]
He checked the weapons rack next.
Nothing obvious was missing.
The spears still had dry bindings, and the axes still carried the dark stain of older use.
If the band had fled from an attack, they had done it without grabbing the main arms. If they had fled from him, they had done it early enough that the camp still looked like a place people intended to return to.
Kane crouched by the fire pit and held his good hand over the ash.
"Reputation from Berakamon could have done this," he said.
"Stories move faster than boats. Throne-taker. Beast-killer. The man who made an arena go quiet. Some bands would rather abandon a good site than test whether the stories were exaggerated."
[Possible. Alternate hypothesis: external pressure unrelated to Host presence. Animal silence and layered heat are not fully explained by ordinary fear of a single approaching humanoid.]
"I know."
He didn’t touch the stew.
He marked the camp’s position in the system with a simple flag and stepped back out to the perimeter where the ground still held prints.
The northern trail looked cleanest.
Booted feet, bare feet, one lighter set that might have belonged to the child who owned the charm.
They ran toward a low rise and then, according to the system’s earlier note, would start losing definition on harder ground.
Kane followed them anyway.
The forest closed in again after the clearing.
Birdsound remained thinner than it should have been for the hour.
He kept the brace close to his body and Mjoldr loose in his good hand, not raised, not hidden.
The system ticked distance in the corner of his vision as the trail held longer than the eastern and southern lines had.
"Talk to me if the scan changes."
[Acknowledged. No new active signatures in a two-kilometer forward cone. Residual path heat continues to degrade.]
He walked for another few minutes before the prints did what the system had predicted and began to fail on stone and packed root.
Kane slowed and studied the last clear set.
Someone had cut hard to the right toward a shoulder of rock that rose out of the tree line like a broken tooth.
He checked his old mental map of the belt from the early run and felt the mismatch immediately.
That outcrop had not been there in the version of this forest he remembered.
Either the map in his head was wrong, or the land had acquired a feature it did not used to own.
He approached with more care.
The stone sat in a small break in the canopy, dark and dry despite the morning damp that still clung to the surrounding leaf litter.
When Kane came within a few paces, he felt the wrongness before he confirmed it with his hand.
Heat bled off the surface in a steady, low wave, as if the rock had been sitting near a forge instead of under shade trees.
He did not touch it yet.
"System. Reading on the outcrop."
[Surface temperature elevated above ambient by a significant margin]
[No open flame source]
[Mineral composition: partially consistent with local stone, partially inconsistent]
[Micro residual: non-zero. Classification uncertain. Not a clean devil-taint match. Not a clean natural match.]
Kane stood there with the warm stone in front of him and the empty camp behind him, and let the two facts sit together.
A band of fourteen had left stew on the fire and a charm on a bedroll.
Their cleanest trail ended at a rock that should not exist on his map and should not radiate heat under a forest canopy.
"They did not run from me," he said finally.
"Or not only from me. Something made this ground worth abandoning in a hurry, and whatever it was left the stone warm."
[Hypothesis range remains open. Recommend against prolonged contact until further data available.]
"I am not licking the rock."
[Acknowledged.]
Kane backed off a step and swept the tree line again.
Still no active signatures.
Still that suppressed quiet that made ordinary woodland feel like it was holding its breath.
He returned along the trail far enough to keep the empty camp and the outcrop both in his mental fix, then carved a simple mark into a boundary tree with the spike of Mjoldr: a short axe line and an arrow pointing toward Sylvander’s outer posts.
Under it, in the old belt dialect he had learned the hard way in the early weeks, he cut a brief message for anyone who still read those signs.
Sky breaks. Outer post. Ask for the axe.
