NTR: Barbarian Harem Conquest

Chapter 287: Chosen One

Kane forced himself back to his feet, left arm hanging at an unnatural angle, blood running freely from his chest, hip, thigh, and a dozen lesser cuts.

He raised Mjoldr one-handed, point leveled at the manifestation’s chest, and throttled the Rage to the absolute limit of the Controlled framework.

"Yield or I keep cutting until there’s nothing left for the pacts to hold."

The manifestation stared at him with its remaining eyes. The green light pulsed once, twice, then slowly dimmed to a low, steady glow.

It took one deliberate step backward. Then another. The frost across the arena floor began to retreat. The crushing divine weight in the air eased by a fraction.

It had not been killed. It could not be killed in any permanent sense by mortal weapons. But it had been wounded in a way that mattered, and under the old pacts that governed lesser manifestations, a clear and visible wound forced acknowledgment.

Grathak stood.

The emperor’s voice rolled across the silent terraces, filled with something that was no longer simple entertainment.

"Enough."

The manifestation turned its antlered head toward the high seat.

Grathak spoke three more words in the same guttural tongue he had used to call it.

The green light along the bark-hide veins faded further. The towering form began to unravel the same way it had formed, condensing back into cold air and deep-forest scent until nothing remained but a lingering frost pattern on the dark stone and the black fluid that still dripped from Mjoldr’s edge.

Silence held the entire arena.

Warriors who had shouted during the first two Measures now stood mute.

Pure-blood heads stared with open shock.

Vorra’s representative had both hands locked on the rail. On the eastern side, Kessa’s face was bloodless, Griselda’s wings half-open as if she had been moments from ignoring every rule and entering the floor.

Marisa remained beside her brother’s seat, eyes wide, the political mask completely gone for the first time in public.

Kane swayed.

The Controlled Rage dropped away in a rush.

Every injury landed at once.

His left arm was definitely broken.

The chest cuts were deep enough that each breath felt edged with broken glass.

Blood loss had reached the point where the edges of his vision were tunneling. He locked his knees through pure refusal and remained standing, barely, while the system screamed overlapping emergency alerts across his sight.

[Critical trauma threshold exceeded]

[Multiple compound injuries]

[Blood loss: severe]

[Emergency recovery protocols available]

Grathak looked down at the bloodied human who was still on his feet and slowly began to smile, wide, sharp, and stripped of every trace of mockery.

"The Three Measures are complete."

His voice carried to every corner of the packed terraces.

"The outsider stood through control. He stood through endurance. He stood through the Guardian’s own attention and forced a withdrawal under the pacts. The packs have seen. The board has changed."

He swept one massive arm across the gathered factions.

"Coalition talks begin at dawn. Every banner present will send a voice. We will speak of days, of mutants, of the sky, and of the price of standing together when it breaks. The barbarian has earned the right to sit at that table."

A low, complex roar of reaction moved through the terraces: shock, calculation, reluctant acceptance, and, from the southern and river-aligned sections, open approval.

No one challenged the declaration. After what they had just witnessed, there was nothing left to challenge it with.

Kane’s left leg finally buckled.

He caught himself on Mjoldr, forced his body upright again through the last scrap of stubbornness, and looked up at the high seat through the blood running into his eyes.

Grathak met the stare and gave a single, almost respectful nod.

"Still standing. Get him off my floor before he paints any more of it. Heal him. He will be present at dawn, on his feet or carried, but present."

Attendants and healers flooded the arena.

Kessa vaulted the rail without waiting for permission. Griselda followed. Marisa was already moving down from the high seat.

Kane felt the first of the emergency recovery options accept a flood of system resources, and the pain receded just enough for him to remain conscious as hands caught him under the arms.

He had not killed the manifestation.

He had not needed to.

He had forced the Guardian’s power to acknowledge him, and in doing so he had forced an empire to do the same.

The Three Measures were finished.

They half-carried him back.

Kessa took most of his weight on her shoulder while Griselda supported the other side, wings half-open for balance.

Kane’s foot dragged more than once.

The broken arm was splinted with hasty field wraps. The deep chest cuts still seeped despite the emergency system protocols.

Every breath pulled wetly.

The Guardian’s manifestation had left wounds that ordinary healing struggled to close. The divine-adjacent damage clung stubbornly, black-edged and slow to knit.

The quarters they were given were larger and better appointed than the previous guest chamber, still guarded, still inside the palace, but clearly a recognition of the status the Three Measures had forced.

A wide bed, a low table, a basin already filled with clean water and cloths. The door closed behind them with a solid thud.

Kessa lowered Kane onto the edge of the bed with careful strength.

Griselda moved immediately to the basin, wet several cloths, and began wiping the blood from his chest and stomach in long, steady strokes.

Her free hand glowed with a pale light as she channeled what divine magic she still carried.

The black-edged wounds resisted, but under the steady application, the worst of the bleeding slowed, and the raw edges began to seal.

"These will scar," Griselda said quietly.

"The familiar’s power does not like to be cut. Ordinary healing will not fully erase them."

Kane watched her work through half-lidded eyes.

"Scars are fine. Functional is better."

Kessa stripped the ruined shirt the rest of the way off him, then the blood-stiff trousers, movements efficient and possessive.

When he was bare, she paused.
