NTR: Barbarian Harem Conquest

Chapter 284: Packs Speak

  • Next Chapter

Marisa returned only once more before the final day, brief and formal in public.

She told him the time, the place, and the single most important warning she had left.

"When the manifestation appears, do not treat it like my brother. It is not pride. It is not entertainment. It is older judgment. Survive its attention, and the packs will have no choice but to listen. Fail, and seventy days will not matter."

Word arrived at mid-morning, less than an hour after Marisa left Kane’s chamber.

A palace runner, young, breathless, and carefully neutral, delivered the message at the door.

Kessa and Griselda had reached the outer capital district at dawn.

They were being escorted inward under formal guard and would arrive at the upper guest levels before the sun reached its peak.

Kane took the information without visible reaction, finished the last of the water on the table, and pulled on a clean shirt.

The scent of sex, blood, and Marisa still clung faintly to his skin despite the washing.

There was no time to do more about it.

Marisa returned minutes later, formal wrap perfectly in place, eyes already calculating the timing.

She took one look at Kane and exhaled through her nose.

"They will smell it. There is nothing left to mask. We meet them as we are."

Kane settled Mjoldr across his back.

"Then we meet them as we are."

They reached the designated reception courtyard just as the escort column entered through the eastern arch.

Kessa walked at the front, striped tail lashing once in sharp irritation at the number of palace guards, ears forward, blue-green eyes already locked on Kane.

Griselda followed half a step behind, wings folded tight, yellow eyes sweeping the courtyard and the surrounding terraces with the same quiet assessment she had used on every new battlefield.

Both women looked travel-worn but fully armed and fully ready.

Kessa’s nostrils flared the moment the distance closed.

She stopped three paces short of Kane.

Her gaze moved from his face to Marisa’s, then back again.

The possessive heat that rose in her expression was immediate and undisguised.

"You smell like her."

Marisa didn’t step back or offer an excuse.

Kane met Kessa’s stare directly.

"I do."

Kessa’s ears flattened a fraction. Her voice stayed low, but the edge in it could have cut stone.

"Two days. You told us two days. We arrive to find the entire outer district talking about a human who stood through two Measures, and you reek of the emperor’s sister."

Griselda’s yellow eyes moved between the three of them, reading posture, scent, the faint marks that healing had not completely erased from Kane’s frame.

She did not speak at once.

When she did, her voice was quiet and precise.

"The delay put us behind the story. The packs already decided the outsider is worth watching before we even reached the markers. That is not ideal. But it is not fatal."

Kane looked from Kessa to Griselda and back again.

"The delay was deliberate. Arriving alone forced the first two Measures onto my shoulders only. You two walking in after the Second Measure changes the weight of the room. That was the point."

Kessa’s tail lashed harder.

"And the part where you fucked her was also the point?"

Marisa answered before Kane could.

"The healing was necessary. The Second Measure left him with cumulative trauma that elixirs alone would not have cleared in time. I made a practical decision. You are free to hate it. You are not free to pretend the outcome was optional."

Kessa took one step closer, striped fur along her arms rising slightly.

"Practical. Right. Next time you make a practical decision that involves putting your scent all over him, you can explain it to me with your teeth instead of your mouth."

Kane raised a hand slightly, not quite between them, but enough to break the line of the stare.

"Enough. We’re all inside the same walls now. The Third Measure is still coming. You can settle the rest after I’m still standing at the end of it."

Griselda inclined her head once.

"Agreed. The political temperature here is already high. Adding an open fight between claimed women in a reception courtyard will only hand the pure-blood faction something useful."

Kessa held Kane’s gaze for a long moment longer, then exhaled hard through her nose and looked away.

The possessive anger didn’t disappear; it simply banked itself for later.

She stepped in, pressed her forehead briefly against Kane’s shoulder in a short, rough claim, and then moved to his other side, deliberately placing herself between him and Marisa.

"Two days," she muttered.

"Next time you change the timeline, you tell me before I smell it on your skin."

"Next time," Kane said.

The four of them left the courtyard together under the eyes of every guard and attendant who had found a reason to be present.

The formal council session convened the following morning in the same upper hall where Kane had first stated his purpose.

Additional banners lined the walls: River-Fang, southern trade marks, two deeper bloodline signs that had not been present at the earlier gathering, and a pure-blood contingent that had clearly ridden hard to arrive in time.

Grathak sat on the raised throne, massive frame at ease, red eyes half-lidded but missing nothing. Marisa took her place along the side wall again.

Kessa and Griselda stood with Kane in the open approach, a clear statement that the outsider no longer stood alone.

The overseer opened the session with a flat summary of the Second Measure results.

Kane had held the center through three waves.

Cumulative damage had been significant. He had remained standing. No kills beyond what the rules of the Measure allowed. The council had seen.

A pure-blood line head spoke first, voice thick with residual anger.

"He survived two neat tests. That does not make him worthy of a coalition or of the Guardian’s attention. The Second Measure was still mortal. Let him face something that does not care about incense or submission taps."
