Eva Miller lowered her eyes and went over what he’d just said in her head again.

Suddenly, she snapped back to herself, turned to face him, then lifted her head.

"Luke Land, did you just call me Little Chili?" Her face was full of disbelief. "You can remember me now? Your amnesia is cured?"

"..."

Luke Land honestly had no idea how to explain this one. Who told him to let it slip in the heat of the moment? If she found out this whole thing was a scam, what would she think?

Anyway, this lie was getting harder and harder to keep up.

"It’s halfway better, I guess. I can remember some things." He still put on a calm, unruffled front.

"Oh." Eva Miller nodded, actually not looking the least bit suspicious.

But paper can’t wrap fire forever.

Luke Land had been in the hospital for quite a long time. Eva Miller’s care for him could only be described as meticulous to the extreme. But whenever he suddenly thought of that lie about "not living six months," Luke still felt a bit uneasy. Sooner or later, Eva was going to see through it.

On instinct, he called Asher Land for help. The car accident, pretending to be disabled, faking amnesia—those had all been Asher’s ideas. So now, this mess ought to be at least half his to clean up.

"Third Brother, whatever happens, this time you have to come up with something for me. I really can’t talk my way out of this anymore."

"This second hospital stay seems like you checked yourself in for no reason, didn’t it?" Asher Land’s indifferent voice came through the phone. The moment Luke heard it, he knew his third brother wasn’t keen on getting involved.

"Third Brother, just take it as me begging you, okay? Give me a plan. I think things are about there now—Little Chili seems to have accepted me. I don’t want to keep acting in front of her anymore, it’s just... I don’t know how to explain it so it makes sense."

There was a brief pause on the other end. Finally, Asher Land opened his golden mouth. "Fine, I’ll help you explain it to Eva Miller."

Before Luke Land could even react, Asher hung up on him.

Asher Land found Eva Miller’s number and dialed her directly.

"President Land, this is Eva Miller, I—"

"I know," he cut her off. "I called you to clear something up with you."

"What is it?" The moment she dealt with Asher Land, Eva Miller immediately turned timid and nervous.

"Luke Land isn’t sick. He’s faking it. The amnesia, the disability—it’s all an act." He conveyed his meaning in the fewest possible words.

"What?" Eva Miller still hadn’t recovered from the shock. "President Land, y-you’re joking with me, right? How could he be faking it? The Doctor checked him and said... he wouldn’t live out the next six months."

"If I say he’s faking it, then he’s faking it. If you want an explanation, go ask him." Asher Land once again neatly kicked this mess back onto Luke Land. Luke had never imagined his third brother’s way of throwing him under the bus would be this crude and simple.

Eva Miller hung up in a daze. Carrying the food she’d just brought from home, she walked toward Luke Land’s ward with a suddenly heavy step.

Her hand rested on the doorknob, and she hesitated at the door for a moment. At last, as if she’d made up her mind, she pushed the door open. She couldn’t even put into words what exactly she was feeling right now.

"Little Chili..." Luke Land saw that something was off about her mood, but had no idea what Asher Land had told her.
