Chapter 136: Boss
The cathedral’s basement had been sealed since Ryuji’s own summoning, and the priest who unsealed it now looked like a man who deeply regretted every professional decision that had led him to this specific doorway.
"He hasn’t slept," the priest said, hurrying to keep pace with Ryuji and Selene down the narrow stairwell. "He hasn’t eaten either, except when we insisted. He keeps asking for someone named ’Boss’ in a tongue none of us recognize."
"That would be me," Ryuji said.
The priest’s eyebrows went up so fast Ryuji almost laughed despite the churning in his gut.
[System Log: Day 141, continued]
[A SECOND SUMMONED HUMAN HAS BEEN CONFIRMED]
[THE CIRCLE ACTIVATED WITHOUT RITUAL PREPARATION FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE THE ENTITY’S OWN ARRIVAL]
[I HAVE NO EXPLANATION FOR THIS]
[I HAVE ALSO NEVER BEEN THIS NERVOUS ABOUT AN OBSERVATION IN FOUR THOUSAND YEARS]
Selene’s hand found his at the base of the stairs, steady despite the void energy simmering wary beneath her calm.
"Whoever this is," she said quietly, "he arrived through the same circle you did. That is not a small detail."
"I know," Ryuji said. "Thinking about it."
The chamber at the bottom was small, stone walls lined with old wards, and in the center of it sat a man on the floor with his knees drawn up and his back against the far wall, wearing clothes Ryuji hadn’t seen in over a year. A cheap suit jacket, considerably rumpled. A tie loosened past the point of formality.
The man’s head snapped up the moment the door opened.
"Boss," he said, and his voice cracked on the word.
Ryuji felt something in his chest give way entirely.
"Tetsu."
The man was on his feet and across the room before the priest could finish his warning about caution, and Ryuji caught him, considerably harder than he expected, both of them nearly going down under the force of it.
"You’re alive," Tetsu said, muffled against Ryuji’s shoulder. "You’re actually alive. I thought—everyone thought you were dead. There was no body. No ransom note. Nothing. It’s been fourteen months, Boss. Fourteen months and I couldn’t—"
"I’m here," Ryuji said, steady despite the considerable weight of emotion pressing at his own throat. "I’m here. Breathe."
Tetsu pulled back, and Ryuji got his first proper look at him. Considerably thinner than he remembered. Older around the eyes, though it had only been fourteen months by Tetsu’s count. Something in his face carried the particular exhaustion of a man who’d spent over a year holding something together that shouldn’t have needed holding.
"How," Ryuji asked. "How did you get here."
"I don’t know," Tetsu said, voice raw. "I was at the old warehouse. Same room you disappeared from. I’d been going there every week, Boss. Every single week for over a year, because it was the last place anyone saw you, and I kept thinking, stupidly, that if I just stood there long enough—" He stopped, laughed once, hollow. "And then the floor lit up. Same pattern. Same light. And then I was here."
Selene stepped forward carefully, void energy calm now rather than wary, and Tetsu’s eyes finally landed on her, widening considerably.
"This is Selene," Ryuji said. "My wife."
Tetsu’s mouth opened and closed twice before anything came out. "Your—Boss, you got married."
"Considerable amount happened," Ryuji admitted.
"Considerable amount," Tetsu repeated, something almost hysterical threading through the words. "You disappear for fourteen months and I find you married to—" He looked at Selene properly, taking in the void energy, the violet eyes, the particular bearing of someone raised in a palace. "Are you a princess."
"I am," Selene said, something careful but not unkind in her tone.
Tetsu turned back to Ryuji with an expression that suggested his brain had simply stopped processing new information for the moment. "You married a princess."
"It’s a long story."
"I have fourteen months of catching up to do, Boss, I think I can handle long."
The priest, standing carefully near the doorway, cleared his throat. "Lord Volkris, if I may. The Accord’s classification attempt on this man returned the same result as your own. Complete failure."
Ryuji felt the old machinery in his head settle into cold, familiar focus. "Unclassifiable."
"Precisely," the priest said. "We have never recorded two such summons in the same lifetime, let alone connected by prior relationship. We do not know what it means."
Selene’s void energy sharpened slightly, thoughtful rather than alarmed. "Perhaps it means nothing beyond coincidence of origin. Or perhaps it means something considerably larger connects them."
Ryuji looked at Tetsu, exhausted and disheveled and genuinely, impossibly alive, and felt the old machinery quiet enough to simply let himself feel relief instead of calculation for a moment.
"We’ll figure it out," he said. "Same as everything else."
They gathered Tetsu’s few belongings, which amounted to the clothes he wore and a battered wallet with photographs that meant nothing to anyone in this world, and Ryuji watched him take in Aldenmarch’s streets with the particular wide-eyed disbelief he himself must have worn, over a year ago, arriving in a world that didn’t want him.
"This is real," Tetsu said, more to himself than anyone else. "This is actually real."
"Takes some getting used to," Ryuji said.
They rode toward the estate that afternoon, Tetsu perched awkwardly on a borrowed horse with the particular discomfort of a man who’d never once needed to ride anything before, and Ryuji found himself explaining, piece by piece, everything that had happened since his own arrival.
Tetsu listened with the particular focus he’d always brought to problems, occasionally interrupting with questions considerably sharper than his exhausted appearance suggested he was capable of.
"So you’re unclassifiable. Married to a demon princess who tried to kill you. Fought off assassins, ancient gods, and an entire cosmic conspiracy." Tetsu shook his head slowly. "Boss, I gotta say, this tracks. This tracks considerably more than I expected it to."
"What do you mean it tracks."
"You’ve been running toward impossible odds since I met you," Tetsu said. "Remember the Yamashita deal. Everyone said walk away. You didn’t walk away. You never walk away." He glanced sideways, something warm and genuinely relieved crossing his tired features. "Guess the universe just decided to give you a bigger version of the same problem."
Selene, riding close on Ryuji’s other side, studied Tetsu with careful, considering attention. "You knew him well. Before."
"Ten years," Tetsu confirmed. "He picked me up off the street when I was nineteen and had nothing. Taught me how to survive, then how to actually live, in that order, even though he’d tell you he did it backward." He met Selene’s eyes directly. "Whatever he’s become here, princess, I imagine the core of him’s the same. He’s loyal past reason and he doesn’t know how to quit on people. If you’ve watched him fight for something, I’d bet money that’s exactly what you saw."
Selene’s expression softened, genuine warmth replacing her earlier careful assessment. "That is, in fact, precisely what I have witnessed."
Ryuji felt his own face heat slightly, the particular discomfort of hearing himself described by someone who’d known him before any of Avarthos’s mysteries had shaped him further.
"You’re both going to gang up on me," he said. "Aren’t you."
"Considerably likely," Selene said, and Tetsu laughed, genuine and delighted despite his exhaustion.
They reached the estate as evening settled, and Ryuji watched Tetsu take in the gate, the reinforced walls, the household staff moving through the grounds, with the particular overwhelmed wonder Ryuji himself had never quite allowed himself the luxury of feeling on his own arrival.
Marro met them at the door, and something in his careful, weathered composure carried genuine warmth even before introductions were made.
"Welcome," he said simply. "Any friend of Lord Volkris from before this household existed is family the moment he arrives."
Tetsu studied the old steward, then the estate, then Ryuji, and something in his exhausted face finally cracked into genuine, unguarded relief.
"Family," he repeated. "You built yourself a whole family, Boss."
"Considerable amount of it happened by accident," Ryuji admitted.
"Sounds about right," Tetsu said, and followed them inside, into a kitchen that had held pancakes and treaties and ancient feathers, now holding one more person who belonged there in a way nobody had fully expected.
The household gathered quickly, curiosity and genuine welcome both drawing everyone toward the newest arrival, and Ryuji watched Tetsu meet Alexei, Kaelith, Renka, and the rest with the particular exhausted good humor of a man who’d survived considerably more than a single night’s worth of impossible revelations.
Selene settled beside Ryuji as the introductions continued, void energy calm and warm.
"He’s exactly what you needed," she said quietly. "Someone from before, who still recognizes who you were."
"Yeah," Ryuji admitted. "Didn’t realize how much I needed that until he was standing in front of me."
She squeezed his hand, and Ryuji felt the particular satisfaction of a mystery resolving into something considerably warmer than dread, the household’s peaceful new normal expanding to hold one more genuine, impossible arrival.
Tetsu caught his eye across the room, exhausted but grinning, and mouthed a single word.
Pancakes?
Ryuji laughed, the sound surprising even himself, and crossed to the stove.
