The day after the survey from the high platform, the caravan formally entered the Akhetaten new capital preparatory encampment.
The camp awoke at dawn to the short percussive strikes of a bronze bell. On either side of the camp gate stood a thick palm-timber watch-post, and across the top of each post a section of ship-side bronze plate stripped from an old vessel had been nailed crosswise -- the errand-runner assigned to the scribal clerks habitually struck this bronze as the work signal just before full daylight: three short, two long. When the caravan reached the outside of the camp gate, the bronze had just sounded its final strike, the lingering tone blending with the sound of sandstone fragments scudding across the ground in the dawn wind into the same low-frequency, sand-rasping hum.
Viewed from a distance toward the camp, the camp’s outline first emerged not in the form of buildings -- but in the form of smoke. The porridge-cooking shelter over in the duty section inside the camp had been firing, since before daylight, with half-dried riverbank reeds -- that kind of reed, burned in the dry season, produced copious white smoke, and the direction in which the white smoke rose happened to run counter to the slanting dawn light, so that from the caravan’s position, the camp presented itself as a surface speck on the earth, a short plume of gray-white smoke rising vertically against the blue-green sky-light. As the caravan drew nearer, physical details began to materialize beneath the smoke: first, three rows of rough-timber-frame work shelters lashed with palm-fiber cord at the crossbeams -- the coarse-linen cloth covering the shelter roofs, worn by many days of sand-wind here, now showed the outlines of knotted cord at several patch-joint seams. Next, the artificial dirt paths extending from between the shelters, compacted by the daily pressure of footsteps -- the road surface a pale gray-brown, its boundary sharp against the pale yellow-white sandy soil of the surrounding wilderness. Last of all, the crossbar of the camp gate and the stone slab beneath it.
When the caravan was still less than two hundred cubits from the gate, a party of men emerged from within. The one walking at the front was no artisan -- one could tell from his feet: he wore a pair of leather-soled coarse-linen shoes, common enough on Theban worksites, the uppers riveted with a thin sheet of bronze for reinforcement -- but that circle of bronze sheet bore almost no scratch marks, its edge whole as new, without even the slightest bend. Any man who had worn such shoes through a full day on a worksite would have had the bronze sheet scored with longitudinal scratches by gravel and sandy soil -- yet the uppers of his shoes were so smooth one could use them as a reflective gauge. Behind him walked two scribal clerks, each hugging a papyrus scroll -- the scroll-ends bore no sealing clay on their caps, clearly having been snatched from the archive shelves on short notice: one man’s scroll, nearly half unfurled, drooped to knee height and slapped against his shins twice as he walked; the other clutched his scroll tight to his chest -- not for protection, but because its horizontal tie-cord had been replaced last month with a thinner cord borrowed from another scroll, and could not bear much tension.
When the caravan formally halted, Kamon stood at the very front and turned his head to look back at the column behind him -- those artisans who had followed him from the West Bank, those apprentices, those young men with iron chisel-hafts strapped across their backs with palm-fiber cord. Their expressions were not the same as when he had seen them at the very first station on the West Bank, building the very first work shelter. Back then their faces had been guarded -- distrustful of whatever result might come from starting from scratch on sand. Now, looking at this unsmoothed, unleveled stone-slab gate-face at the camp entrance, their expressions were something else -- the guardedness was still there, but overlaid with a quiet, unspoken pre-assessment: not a question of how many work shelters they had built, but of how, at every camp-stop along the route, they had already mastered the method of making a first judgment on an unfamiliar worksite’s gate-face. Before the cart had even fully stopped, Seb began measuring two finger-widths eastward from the camp’s limestone slab; from his perspective, that white-lime stain on the slab, left by rainwater soaking -- its percolation track was not running vertically downward but slanting toward the south, indicating that the ground surface beneath the slab had, during at least one past Nile flood, been overtopped by water sweeping from northwest to west, then circling south around the camp’s northern boundary. In the future, if the camp’s northern drainage ditch could not be dug to follow this direction -- water would pond at the camp gate.
The camp was situated at the northern end of the planned central axis -- east of the palace district, south of the artisan village, enclosed by three courses of temporary perimeter wall. Already stationed inside the camp were royal works clerks sent from Thebes, several conscripted noble architects, a team of copy clerks responsible for documentation and materials accounting, and a large mass of local laborers recently dispatched to the worksite and not yet organized into crews. This was the full-city construction forward outpost, formally established by the royal house.
The camp’s internal layout had been hastily demarcated by Theban works clerks within less than half a month of the pharaoh’s decree being issued -- seen from above, the entire camp presented a roughly irregular rectangle canted slightly toward the northwest, its long side no more than five hundred cubits, its short side roughly three hundred. The three courses of temporary perimeter wall were piled from limestone rubble gathered on site from the wilderness, the lowest sections barely waist-high, the highest barely clearing a man’s head. The walls themselves were not meant for defense -- on this wilderness, beyond windblown sand and the occasional wild dog bolting from the eastern desert, there was nothing to defend against. The sole function of the walls was to provide a psychological boundary between "inside the zone" and "outside the zone": the ground inside the walls had been artificially leveled -- though the quality of the leveling was very poor; in many places the hard-crust layer, crushed by rough-stone rolling, had instead split open with several new fissures, the crack-mouths’ edges not yet patched -- but at least the surface rubble on this patch of ground had been cleared away; a person could unload goods, erect structures, and light fires within this zone without first stepping blindly into a hidden mud-pit. The ground outside the walls was still the pristine wilderness hard crust -- cracks, salt efflorescence, fragments of dried lichen, and scattered limestone detritus of varying sizes paved the ground.
Inside the camp, a row of work shelters lined the northern perimeter wall -- these were the temporary dwellings of the Theban works clerks and noble architects. These shelters were, in basic structure, identical to the ones Kamon erected: palm-timber frames, coarse-linen roof cloth, palm-coir cord lashings. But Kamon’s shelters were built to go up at maximum speed and come down at maximum speed in preparation for breaking camp -- his linen cloth was second-grade material traded from an old weaver in Wheat Hill Town; his cord-ends were old palm-fiber cord recovered from dismantling shelters at every station camp, with a new section braided on. The Theban shelters used new cloth direct-issued from the Theban royal warehouse -- the linen weave fine and even, the diagonal brace-timbers pre-mortised at both ends, the roof even augmented with three extra circles of thick cloth edging for sand-proofing -- yet the shelter floors had no moisture barrier. The residual white-lime stains from the previous period’s accumulated water in the slab joints were still there. And after these shelters had stood for some time -- every day after sunset, when the heat of the wilderness surface dispersed upward from below, the stone slabs were once again brushed by condensation -- condensation from the surfaces of clay jars and bronze basins collecting in the low points of the slab joints, mixing with the faint alkali bleeding from the mud layer to dissolve afresh a fine white ring of salt froth at the edges of the previously dried white-lime stains. It was already visible that the pooled water in the stone joints beneath those shelters would, through the night, repeatedly condense with the temperature swing -- yet no underfloor venting had been done at the base of any shelter. In other words, one knowledgeable glance at the alkali stains seeping upward from beneath the shelters told the story: for every three months these shelters were occupied, the timber frames beneath the shelter floors would, under the floor mats, be corroded from below by damp alkali, losing roughly two finger-joints’ thickness of wood fiber.
The camp’s southern flank was a large zone where laborers not yet organized into crews temporarily gathered -- no work shelters, no windbreak walls, only a few lines crudely scratched into the earth with coarse Nile-riverbank cobblestones as zone-division markers. The laborers clustered in groups of three to five on either side of the cobblestone lines; some were sharpening old iron chisels they had brought from Thebes -- every grease-darkened wrapping cord on those chisel hafts testified that the number of times they had struck stone exceeded what an ordinary worker would do in three years. Some were hand-twisting coarse palm cord. Some simply sat leaning back against the cobblestone lines, dozing with their heads pillowed on their rolled-up linen mats, a layer of fine-sand dust, blown over by the morning wind, covering their feet. Their crew-assignment registers still lay at the very bottom of the leftmost tray on the scribal clerk’s desk, pressed beneath a stack of blank papyrus sheets -- which was to say, they had already arrived in person, but had not yet been assigned to any specific trade or material yard.
The camp’s southwest corner was the materials zone -- the first batch of stone slabs and crude-sand samples from Thebes had been stacked toward the exterior, each pile covered with a sheet of waterproof cloth cut from old sailcanvas, the corners of each cloth weighted down with several large Nile-riverbank cobblestones to keep the wind from lifting them. Peering sideways through the gaps between cobblestones, the bottom of the stacks had been spread with scattered palm-fiber cord and incomplete sets of ashlar offcuts -- two divergent versions of the discrepancy between the warehouse’s sequentially registered supplies manifest and the actual inventory had clearly already emerged. The orientation of the stacked material’s interior placement had never been aligned with the riverbank direction; all the long stone blocks were laid flat, so that during the rainy season the undersides of the stone, once soaked, could not naturally drain in any direction -- Kes had noticed this within his first hundred paces of entering the camp, and turned his head to say to Hapy: "These stone materials are laid flat, their bottom faces entirely submerged in a film of water. Before moving them, they’ll need to be flipped and have their cold-joint direction retested -- stone that has soaked in water splits in a different direction."
At the very center of the camp was an open square where the hard-crust layer had been tamped level -- to be precise, it could not really be called "tamped"; it had merely been irrigated several times with river water to soften the surface crust, then rolled once with a rough stone roller. In the middle of the square stood an iron-tipped timber post serving as a shadow-clock gnomon; the post’s body was already canted westward by an angle of no more than two-thirds of a finger-width -- not blown by the wind, but caused by uneven settlement of the saturated silt layer beneath the ground under repeated day-night temperature swings, the east side of the post’s base having sunk one finger-width deeper than the west side, so that the gnomon’s shadow-direction reading deviated by a minute offset from the assumed north-south alignment of the wall-foundation axis. Yet this timber post was still being used by the scribal clerks to verify the orientation of the gate-face -- no one had yet called attention to it, before its angular deviation caused some wall’s angle to follow it askew.
Three sides: artisans, clerks, laborers, stone stock, sand samples, timber posts, work shelters -- the camp was a compact, complete, but still provisional artificial landform functioning on temporary paper records and old ledgers, within which existed -- but was not limited to -- the following: drawings lacking coordinate references; supply manifests mismatched with actual inventory; work-shelter foundations devoid of moisture barriers and alkaline-proofing; material-pile orientations repeating an error Lu Zhu had already corrected once at Wheat Hill Town.
At the camp gate lay a limestone slab of exceedingly uneven cut-face, on which the sun-disk emblem of the Aten had been carved in relief -- but the slab’s cut-face had not been leveled at all, and beneath the emblem, a white-lime stain left by prolonged rainwater soaking oozed downward -- not weathering, but the mark of haste: thrust here as a gate-face before you had even trued it.
Kamon led the artisans in setting up work shelters and the material yard; Meru, at the camp’s southeast corner, confirmed the transfer staging positions for unloading with the Building-Supply Alliance’s transport team. Seb and Hapy had already walked the camp’s perimeter and sketched out preliminary drainage lines for the material yard and encampment -- the method identical to what they had done at the West Bank, Front Field Ford, the Sennu house, Hawk’s Wing Ford, and every other station, and this station was no exception.
Lu Zhu, leading his apprentice team, had just steadied his own cart at the camp’s central square and had not yet put away the palm-fiber paper in his hands when a man in royal official attire walked straight toward him.
The man was around fifty years of age, his crown balder even than Ptah’s at White River Ford, his chin fringed with a sparse circlet of black beard. Both hands cradled a wooden ruler bearing a gold-plated collar -- the ruler’s gold plating had already lost most of its layer, exposing the brass core set beneath, and from end to end it was spotless yet had never once been immersed in mud. His stride was more urgent than any artisan who had ever carried a hammer, yet he slowed at every corner where an obstacle needed to be bypassed -- not observing the worksite, but waiting for someone else to clear a straight path he could walk.
"You are Lu Zhu, from the West Bank?" His tone was not an interrogation -- it was a top-down confirmation, like someone examining a cargo manifest already signed but not yet stamped. "My name is Sobekh -- Royal Overseer-General of Works from Thebes, director of the new capital’s preparatory office."
Sobekh was a man of senior standing among the Theban royal works clerks. He had, in his early twenties, followed the then-prince, the old pharaoh, in building the first batch of river embankments on Thebes’ eastern bank -- in those days, what he held in his hands was not this gold-collared wooden ruler but an honest timber mallet and stone wedge, and he had soaked two flood seasons of the Nile’s yellow mud-water on the riverbank alongside a crew of bottom-tier stonemasons. He had risen from stonemason to works foreman, from foreman to works clerk, and from works clerk to Overseer-General -- nearly thirty years in all. In those thirty years he had overseen the construction of three temples’ annex-hall foundations, two royal villa enclosure walls, and one river-port unloading platform -- every project completed on schedule, every project free of structural collapse. This record, in the circle of Theban works clerks, could be ranked near the top.
But the problem lay precisely in the format of that record. Every project he had built -- temple annex halls, royal villas, the river-port platform -- belonged to the old style of construction: independent buildings, independent foundations, independent drainage. The boundary of each was sealed by enclosure walls; the foundation of each was responsible only for the settlement of its own small footprint; the drainage of each was responsible only for channeling the water from its own courtyard outside the wall -- what lay outside the wall, how it related to the neighboring structure, where the water from the entire urban district ultimately went -- none of this fell within his oversight scope. His thirty years of experience constituted an entire scroll of meticulously detailed drawings of single-building cross-sections, single-layer foundation padstone arrangements, and single-row drainage branch ditches -- but not a single page depicted the continuous drainage gradient across the interface connecting one building to the next, nor a single page annotated the direction of groundwater percolation between different buildings. The depth of his knowledge was among the best of any works clerk in the entire city -- but the scope of his knowledge had never expanded from "the single building" to "the full urban district." Pharaoh had appointed him Overseer-General of the new capital’s preparatory office because of his engineering foundation at the single-building level -- but pharaoh had simultaneously, in the decree, vested the authority over citywide planning in a folk construction-master, which meant pharaoh himself, before issuing the decree, had already realized that this city’s engineering magnitude and the old style of single-building construction were separated by an experiential gulf.
Sobekh himself might not have been entirely unaware of this -- but his thirty years of accumulated professional pride made his first reaction, when facing a young artisan who had come from the West Bank with no background in royal works whatsoever, one of defensiveness. That gold-collared wooden ruler that never touched mud was no longer a measuring tool -- it had become the marker he used to prove his rank. On the Theban worksite, he was the only man authorized to carry such a ruler -- it was the token of promotion issued by the Royal Works Institute when he rose from foreman to Overseer. This token itself conferred no additional practical measuring function -- any distance he measured with it, the scribal clerks under him could measure more precisely with a palm-fiber cord. But he needed this ruler -- because in a world where everything was covered in palm-fiber cords, stone wedges, and mud-water, only this layer of brass core and gold leaf could prove that he was not one of the men who had climbed up from the mud. He had reached his present position not through fine talk -- but through an unbroken thirty-year record of never letting an accident occur on a single wall foundation. That was precisely the problem: the previous evaluation standard was "does not exceed the bottom line within this gate," while Lu Zhu, by methods that invisibly bypassed his, had extended from inside the gate to the entire coordinate system of the world outside it. He could not understand how a young man from the West Bank could use charcoal to draw a complete set of groundwater-table contour lines -- when his own drawing-scroll could not show even a single contour.
Lu Zhu did not take up this topic. "Whether I am from the countryside or not is beside the point. The new capital’s foundations will not be rammed with pedigree. His Majesty Pharaoh issued a decree: the construction team is to coordinate citywide planning. I need your preparatory office to produce all existing planning base-maps and land-survey records -- we need to compare your proposal and ours."
Sobekh drew his arm inward against the flap of his tunic. He did not erupt. Instead he summoned a scribal clerk from the side and had him bring over a scroll sealed with gold mud -- the gold-mud outer seal had already been warmed to a cracked, frayed edge, but the papyrus inside still retained the crisp paper-spring of its first opening, which meant it had hardly ever been unfurled on a worksite for verification since being sealed. With a sweep, he spread it across the table -- it was the complete topographical map currently held by the new capital preparatory office. The drawing, in fine ochre pigment, annotated the course of the Nile, the boundaries of the eastern and western cliffs, and even several oblique notes on proposed temple sites. But the drawing held not a single contour line -- natural gradient and natural drainage direction were, on the paper, a complete blank. There were no groundwater-level annotations, and still less any settlement-warning lines for soft-soil foundations. Only a single, massive sun-disk emblem had been placed at the center of the paper grid.
Lu Zhu glanced at it and said nothing. He spread his own continuous shallow-bore cross-sectional map, drawn on the wilderness, beside it -- two cross-sections, side by side on the same table. On the left was the scroll map sealed with gold mud, its stone-material estimates compiled by old-system ledgers -- a routine, far-sightless advance sent from the old capital’s regulations. On the right was the mud-stratum stress-sketch, outlined station by station on the reverse side of palm-fiber paper in charcoal -- the receipt, from the first crenellation of the West Bank settlement all the way to this day’s full line of groundwater-tilt direction beneath the limestone platform. He pointed at a patch of level ground directly in front of the palace on the preparatory office’s drawing: "This plot -- already marked for the palace’s east-west transverse avenue -- cannot be moved. I agree. The northern high ground is reserved for the palace -- leave it there."
Sobekh dragged the gold-mud scroll’s edge a half-inch toward his own side. He had fully expected to hear, from the opposing drawing, a preamble to wholesale rejection.
"But the soft-soil foundation distribution line we have measured from Wheat Hill Town to this station runs along here. If the transverse avenue in front of the palace does not directly intersect the main artery perpendicular to the central axis -- but instead shifts the central administrative district’s road network eastward, above the contour line, letting the main artery, south of the temple front plaza’s centerline, offset by half a ward-block before continuing down into the residential district -- the lateral-offset margin is entirely reserved as a seepage buffer belt for the main drainage channel. This simultaneously protects the palace frontage from water intrusion without affecting the main artery’s full-width traffic capacity. In this residential section, no transverse-connected water-supply covered channels will be laid. Every household’s domestic water is delivered from the drinking-water distribution pool beneath the temple front plaza, sent down along the vertical branch lanes -- using a different gradient from the drainage channels, no cross-interference. In your original proposal, this area was left blank -- let us first handle the drainage connection for this plot properly." On the residential district’s transverse lane positions, Lu Zhu drew an arrow marking the gradient direction, one to the left and one to the right, vertically downward.
Sobekh stared at that drawing for a very long time. He was not looking for flaws -- he was using his experience as Overseer to note, in every extended drainage main-channel’s finest linear distribution below, a gap of only two finger-joints’ difference from the offset spacing of the palace transverse avenue he had just been shown -- and this difference happened to match the optimal stone-joint width he had seen during his tenure as Overseer. This country man was not deliberately trying to pull the palace down from its platform -- he was simply using subsurface culverts and retention basins to level out, in advance, every low point where water might pond and trigger settlement.
The two drawings lay spread side by side on the table -- every person present shifted their gaze back and forth, in turn, between the left drawing and the right. The two noble architects standing behind Sobekh were the first to lose their composure: one of them, the younger, reached his hand over the preparatory office’s ochre-pigment map and traced a circle around the blank space before the palace, asking: "The width of the palace’s east-west transverse avenue on the preparatory office drawing is proportioned to the entrance of Thebes’ main temple -- you are not changing the palace’s position, but you want to push the entire central administrative district’s road network eastward. After the shift, won’t the administrative district’s eastern boundary wall run straight into the sand-pile at the limestone cliff base? The foundation depth would be insufficient -- how does a wall bear its crenellations on that?" Lu Zhu did not answer the entire question. He merely indicated, on the drawing, the overlay line behind the limestone-fissure-angle projection he had contoured at the cliff base: "The administrative district’s eastern wall need not be placed on the blank sand-pile. Set this boundary wall on the outer line of the eastern margin of that calcium-nodule cemented zone Seb located -- this nodule layer is continuous from end to end, of uniform thickness. I will have Kes drive an additional row of two-and-a-half-cubit vertical piles at this position, and convert the wall into a free-standing colonnade, without connecting lintels, set in the cemented zone two finger-widths south of center. Above it, only a stone-frame grille is drawn -- the lateral horizontal thrust it bears is less than one-tenth that of a solid wall, so there is no problem of the sandy foundation’s deep compression pulling the wall body downward. After the pile bases pass through the nodule layer and enter the coarse-sand interlayer below, there is natural drainage -- no deep blind-ditch required." He transcribed the pile-position direction and the continuous line onto the side of the drawing -- then added a stroke on the longitudinal flank of that wall’s planar direction: the southern extension past the relay-pool side-wall base. The young architect, having read this lateral line, said no more -- he had understood: Lu Zhu was not shifting the road network eastward and abandoning the wall -- he was following the direction of the subsurface nodule layer and simultaneously finding the same base for all eastern-side structures. Where the nodule layer was, there the wall would be -- his boundary wall was not position-determined; it was foundation-determined.
Another architect, older, his temples already white, stared for a long while at the residential-district proposal of "no transverse-connected water-supply covered channels." In Thebes he had been responsible for designing a noble villa’s drainage-connection covered channels -- that was the complete closed-circuit self-circulating water-supply work of which he was proudest within the old system. He attempted to voice his doubts, pointing at the model where "the drinking-water distribution pool beneath the temple front plaza sends water down along the vertical branch lanes": "If no transverse-connected water-supply covered channels are laid, and at some point the dry-season drop in the river level on the southern side affects the gravity-flow pressure -- then for the vertical branch lanes coming down from the distribution pool, must every household’s entire water supply depend solely on the short-retention pressure of the branch lane’s own stored water, or does each household need to separately add a sealed dry-season storage-pool beneath its own dwelling? If you want every household to dig its own daily storage-pool -- then the bottom of this storage-pool is no more than half a cubit from the gravel moisture barrier, and the rising pressure of the rainy-season groundwater table could tilt the storage-pool’s floor slab -- does that subdivision map of yours fix the position of every storage-pool in advance?"
This time it was not Lu Zhu who answered -- it was Kes, crouched beside the table drawing the peripheral drainage belt. He had caught the words "storage-pool floor slab tilt" and raised his head, using the data he had gathered on rainy-season wetland retention-basin floor-slab deformation on the West Bank to catch this statement. "The storage-pool floor slab does not need to resist all reverse-percolation pressure -- it only needs a layer of the coarse-sand drainage course beneath the slab, the same one we used for the granary floor at Wheat Hill Town. The under-slab drainage course does not necessarily have to go in the drainage direction -- it can be slanted toward the aquifer gravity-flow zone by half a finger-joint of pressure differential. During the rainy season, the reverse water pressure across the entire block will flow downward through each household’s under-slab drainage course, automatically converge at the new bottom-pressure crushed stone, and then drain to the backup drainage seepage-retention basin." The old architect, having heard this, looked down at his own fingers -- he was using the width of his finger-joints to gauge, in his mind, the thickness of that under-slab drainage course -- and then withdrew his question. He understood that the paving method Kes was describing had not been learned from books -- it was the residual of data repeatedly pressurized and verified in the course of actual measurement at Wheat Hill Town. The problem of storage-pool floor-slab tilt had not been neutralized by theory -- it had been spoken for, by itself, through a drainage course already pressed beneath another storage-pool’s floor, having survived the water-passage cycle of an entire dry season without cracking.
The gap between the two drawings on the table gradually ceased to be merely a difference in drafting style -- it became something every person present with worksite experience could perceive: a generational gap between two engineering systems. The Theban gold-mud scroll represented the apex of the old style of construction: single-building refinement, standardized construction materials, zonal isolation, responsibility absolutely clear within a single enclosure wall. Lu Zhu’s cross-sectional map represented a continuous coordinate system accumulated from the foundational data and structural practices of every station along the entire line -- this system sought not the independence within a single wall, but the continuity between wall and wall, from building to street, from water supply to drainage, from groundwater-table contour lines to the stepped arrangement across different soil strata. The two were not, in themselves, competing within the same evaluative framework -- they had been spread simultaneously onto this table because pharaoh’s decree had pushed this new city’s architectural history into a critical phase where the old-style engineer could not advance alone, yet the new-style engineer still had to pass through an old-style, experienced administrator to mobilize materials and manpower.
"Can you deliver this complete set of citywide new capital drainage-system cross-sections within three days?"
"Three days is enough. Some of the foundation survey bores have already been sunk; the rest will be surveyed as they are drawn. But there is one condition -- the preparatory office must produce all the artisans’ rosters and the Theban scribal clerks who have previously been dispatched into the camp, for full review. We need to weed out the old clerks who may have infiltrated from the temple -- among these people, there are very likely several who, at the mud-work and stone-material level, have left hidden escape routes for their former backers. If they are not screened and purged early, once the works expand, the losses will be at more than one location."
Sobekh’s arrogance withdrew for an instant. He lowered his head -- not conceding, but weighing. He had spent nearly twenty years dealing with pharaoh’s worksites and knew that the precedents of the old temples meddling in construction materials were not casually fabricated. He was silent a moment, then stood and walked to the wooden desk behind the partition of his quarters, turned his key two and a half rotations on the outer brass lock-chain, and drew out an unaltered original dispatch roster.
"This roster is the artisan crew-formation base-list originally sent from the Theban scribal office -- it was presumably copied several times later. One quarryman by the name of Mehptah has a strikeout mark on the register, but to my knowledge, this man was not summarily expunged from the scribal-office archive -- I shall not interrogate him for now. What remains is for someone on your side who is relatively familiar with the original register’s impression-marks on this batch of people to verify once." Lu Zhu took the roster and casually handed it to Mehptah beside him.
The old quarryman opened to the first page, glanced once at the clerk’s name signed in the lower-left corner of the far-left column, and said to Mekat: "This man’s impression habit is to press the page-bottom slightly right of center on every sheet -- he never signs his full name in the front column. The original register left extremely fine spiral ink traces. On the portion of the roster where the names were later swapped, the stroke force and speed are entirely different from the original -- someone used the old temple’s copy-overwrite method to substitute the previous batch of names with a later list."
Mehptah spread the roster across his knee -- he had been standing all morning and his knees were beginning to ache; Sobekh’s quarters had no spare stool out front, so he simply sat on the rough stone slab to the left of the threshold, warmed slightly by the sun. His way of turning the roster pages was wholly unlike a scribal clerk’s -- he did not flip page by page from right to left at a constant speed. Instead, after opening a page, he first held the entire page before his eyes at arm’s length, squinting to take in all the names in different ink shades on that page simultaneously. Then he selected the several characters with the deepest ink color and heaviest stroke pressure -- and lightly scored a line to the right of the character with his fingernail, not as a mark, but to feel the speed of the stroke: a fast stroke left a spindle-shaped ink trace, tapered at both ends and thicker in the middle; a slow stroke left an even-thickness, rough-edged strip-shaped ink trace. He read the speed variation of the ink trace the same way he carved characters into stone -- each chisel-stroke’s driving force came from the acceleration transmitted by the iron hammer to the chisel haft; where the stroke broke, it left a slanted, asymmetrical white spall-mark on the stone surface. This and the asymmetrical ink shading at the finishing end of a stroke on papyrus were, on a purely physical level, the identical rule of force transmission. A man who had carved inscriptions into stone for forty years, reading handwriting on paper, was not judging the aesthetic quality of the calligraphy -- he was reading the force-direction of that hand as it moved across the paper.
When he turned to the third page, his finger stopped on a line of names slightly right of center. The ink trace of that line of names was extremely deep -- so deep that when the reverse of the papyrus was held to the sunlight, the micro-expansion zone where the ink had seeped into the paper fibers and raised the paper surface was visible. Deep ink seepage meant the writer had pressed the brush onto the paper and paused there for a relatively long time -- not because that line of names was difficult to write, but because after writing this line, something had interrupted him, and he had set the brush on the paper, pressing continuously without lifting. A normal scribal clerk, when continuously copying a column of names, would not pause without cause on any single line -- unless he was not copying but "deciding." Deciding what? Deciding whether this name was to be kept or struck through. Mehptah raised this page to the sunlight and examined it against the light -- after the pause, when that hand had resumed and continued downward, it had dipped fresh ink once. At the juncture between the two segments of ink color was an exceedingly fine ripple line -- the terminal trace left where the second ink-dip and the first segment of old ink had mixed while still wet on the paper surface. The position of that pause was, precisely, the position where this name had been struck through in the later copy.
"This one too." He flipped the third page over and pointed it out for Mekat and Seb, standing beside Sobekh’s desk, to see simultaneously -- not pointing at one character, but at the offset position where a line of names appeared in different columns across two copies of the register. "On the original register, his name was written at the middle position of this line -- in the later copy, it was shifted to the far right of the next column. Shifting the name’s position was so that the name ultimately retained would overlie the person on the same line to the left of the original register -- the person who was subsequently struck through on the copy. The two originally had no knowledge of each other -- but after the shift, it appeared as if this retained person had been substituted in for the person who was removed, conforming to the Theban scribal institute’s roster-reconciliation procedure. They did not alter the text itself -- they altered the layout -- so that the person reviewing the register could not trace the handwriting to discover who had been replaced. The method we used on the old construction stelae in Thebes to authenticate textual tampering is the same -- we do not look at what the characters say; we look at the chisel-to-character spacing and the hand-carved finishing-stroke traces at the left corner of the inlaid panel."
Sobekh stood to the side, and the expression on his face was no longer the arrogance or the weighing of earlier -- throughout the process of Mehptah opening the roster, he had not interjected. He recognized this old quarryman’s name -- Mehptah. He had heard this name in the Theban Institute of Works. Years ago, when the temple’s main hall was being renovated, they had wanted to replace a batch of old artisans -- and the first person removed from the roster had been Mehptah. Not because he had committed any error -- his most famous trait was not making technical mistakes, but that his requirements for the stone’s splitting-plane direction always exceeded every written regulation by one extra process: "Stone whose splitting-plane direction has not been struck in advance is not permitted on the wall." The temple stewards felt his extra process slowed the progress and had his name struck from the new roster through the scribal clerks. Today, on this wilderness -- he was flipping the roster in the same manner, and not out of revenge, not out of holding a grudge, but because, under forty years of the habit of being forced to look at splitting-plane direction -- his hands and eyes had developed an automatic detection response to any man-made order that was not "aligned with the direction it ought to follow." A tampered roster exposed itself before him more plainly than salt efflorescence under the sun.
After the roster verification was complete, Sobekh had the scribal clerk lock the verified master copy of the roster back into the brass-chain wooden chest -- this time not behind the partition of his quarters, but moved to the shared archive shelf on the side of the central square facing the artisan housing zone -- he placed it at a position where the artisan representatives could see it from outside. This seemingly trivial shift in placement angle in fact signified his move from "custodial holding" to "public disclosure" -- and this was precisely the same principle Lu Zhu had articulated during the drawing debate earlier: order is not maintained by adding more authority, but by returning information to a reference plane where different people can cross-check it.
Sobekh questioned nothing further. To the clerk under him, he said one line: "Replace all their charcoal sticks with new ones -- they consume charcoal at a heavier rate than we do when drawing formal plans." This sentence was not spoken to Lu Zhu, but the entire camp could hear it.
Kamon stood at the edge of the material yard opposite, holding the palm-fiber measuring cord he had just unloaded -- he had not yet measured the thickness of this station’s first new standard sample brick. But that brief silence just now told him one thing: this time, the bricks did not need to be laid faster than anyone else’s -- they only needed to withstand being re-measured better than before. He had already seen that the row of material yards behind Sobekh was piled full of dust-filmed stone slabs transferred in by old ledgers -- each and every one of them waiting to have every face’s thickness and cold-joint direction measured by the guild’s standard ruler.
There was not yet a single road on the wilderness of Akhetaten. But the group of people standing in the central square of this old preparatory camp had, on paper, with only three drawings, half a face of hard crust, and one new axis-line not yet traced by sunlight, made the first decision in the history of the new capital’s planning that no predecessor had defined its elevation for.
Late that night, the last pot of porridge-water in the camp had its fire-bottom embers smothered. The work shelters within the three walls sank into the extraordinary stillness that settled over the entire wilderness in a state utterly devoid of light and wind -- a stillness not because no one was active, but because every sound-source across the whole desert plain had ceased at the same moment: the wind stopped, the porridge-pot bottom no longer bubbled, the sharpening iron and sandstone no longer ground against each other, and the night watchman at the camp gate no longer paced back and forth on the sand -- because his night vision had adapted to the darkness, and standing still let him hear more of what ought not to appear in the night than walking did. Only a single set of extremely low mixed frequencies remained, faintly transmitted from the direction of the distant Nile -- the muffled, deep roll of the river-water, at night, across its own stratified multi-layer temperature-differential cross-sections, slowly driving the riverbed silt along the channel bottom, the frequency so low it approached the lower limit of human hearing; a person did not know he was hearing it, but his body, without awareness, would adjust its breathing rhythm to the beat of this low frequency.
Lu Zhu was not yet asleep. He sat on the linen mat in the corner of the work shelter Kamon had left for him, against the outer wall, using the starlight seeping through the weave-gaps of the shelter’s roof cloth to examine a sketch on the flat stone -- not one he had drawn today, but the very first planar central-axis draft he had drawn on the wilderness three days prior. He had taken it out not to revise it. On this sketch was a central-axis positioning line he had drawn so heavily the charcoal had penetrated two layers of paper fiber -- now he ran his finger along this line from end to end, the raised grain on the reverse side of the paper aligning with the directional orientation where everyone had stood on the limestone platform in the daylight. He did not need to add any new annotation lines -- this line had, before the crowd left the platform, already been pinned with multiple anchor points on the wilderness by different people, each with their own eyes. He folded it and replaced it at the bottom layer of the flat stone, stacking on top of it the old drawings brought from the West Bank -- then he lay down and closed his eyes. Across the wilderness night sky, from south to north, stretched an extraordinarily faint band of the Milky Way’s white -- through the zenith’s star field, the outline of the limestone platform became an exceedingly faint black-gray silhouette on the artificial skyline.
Kamon, in a work shelter not far from Lu Zhu, was also not yet asleep. He lay in the darkness, holding in his hand the palm-fiber measuring cord he had used since the very first station when they set out from the West Bank -- the cord’s palm fibers, stretched a dozen or twenty times each day, had developed natural fatigue, and the knot at the cord’s end had gone from an initial dead-knot to a kind of sliding lock-knot, formed after countless re-stretchings and unknotings. It was no longer the same cord it had been -- but it could still pull a precise level line. This afternoon he had met with the Theban artisan team-leader -- not a formal meeting, but at the edge of the material yard, each picking through materials, each glancing at the sample brick in the other’s hand. The Theban sample brick was wider than the size he was accustomed to by nearly half a finger-width -- he would need to cross-calibrate both sides’ standard sample-brick dimensions once. Not to change his own standard -- but to place the two sample bricks flat on the same linen cloth, under the same daylight, against the same level line pulled by the same cord, and take a single cross-measurement. As long as both standards could be simultaneously accommodated by the same measurement framework -- the two work crews could work shoulder to shoulder on the same foundation. The first thing he would do tomorrow was not drive a stake -- it was to place two sample bricks under the same daylight-shadow position and calibrate their length once.
Meru had not returned from the riverbank. He had taken two Building-Supply Alliance hands and crossed to the west bank under cover of night -- no reckless risk, but to take advantage of the stable water level in the night hours to measure the low-water baseline elevation of the river surface, and to enter this data into that sole remaining line on the final blank page of the station map -- the last-leg heavy-load draft restriction for the water transport route from east of the river to west, from the west-bank transfer storage-pool to the river-transport platform. He had brought no torch -- the trade caravan’s night surveys never used torches; the torchlight’s reflection would bend a layer of nonexistent parallax between the eye and the river’s true height. He read the water surface by starlight -- the river surface under starlight was a band of black mirror half a shade darker than the sky; the water’s true boundary only manifested itself in the form of an exceedingly small ring of reflected light when a ripple’s edge touched the boat’s wooden oar. From the lowest level of the west-bank gravel beach, he measured twice toward the low-water surface direction -- and then converted the station lines, on which he had written countless figures, from east to the new capital’s transfer-platform, into the first set of dual-bank interchange transfer-volume limits.
And on the high ground north of the camp, Seb crouched alone beside his test pit. He was not asleep -- not because he did not want to sleep, but because, just before sleeping, he had once more touched the calcium nodules he had excavated. The nodules at night were cold -- warm by day, cold by night, the temperature difference spanning nearly the contrast of two bodily-felt seasons. This meant the diurnal fluctuation magnitude of the groundwater table, in the diffusion zone above and below this nodule layer, might be faster in frequency than what the daytime survey had projected. That is, the new capital’s groundwater-table variation was not merely operating on the long annual cycle of dry season to rainy season -- there might also exist short-cycle secondary peaks generated by the difference in daytime versus nighttime surface evaporation pressure. If this finding was not entered into the calculation tables as a load-correction factor before the formal foundation design was completed -- then in the future, every building’s bottom line on the nodule layer would, before the onset of each year’s accumulated-water reverse-percolation, have already been gently and repeatedly lifted and settled an extraordinary number of times within the dry days. He did not finish drawing this tonight -- he wrote it as a line of densely packed tiny characters, pressed in charcoal at the very bottom edge of the cross-sectional drawing, to serve as the first supplementary foundation correction note to be handed to Lu Zhu tomorrow.
Hapy was beside the material yard, turning over that batch of slender long stone blocks that had been stored flat. During the day, upon entering the camp, Kes had said this batch of stone needed to be flipped and its cold joints retested -- he took the measuring cord and a ground-flat limestone calibration face and measured the joint-direction angle of each stone’s upper and lower faces once. He discovered that more than half of the stone, after alkaline water immersion during the rainy season, had undergone a shift in the splitting direction of its lower face -- the original natural cold-face direction on the lower face, after alkaline pore-water infiltration, had been altered by carbonate recrystallization within the fissures, causing the natural splitting-joint angle on the lower face to deviate by no small measure. These changes had to be recorded -- and moreover, a clause had to be added to the new capital’s first stone-material acceptance-standard sheet: "For all stone material stored flat in the camp for more than two seasons, before being placed on a wall, it must be flipped once and its splitting-joint direction-angle retested -- the new joint direction on the lower face after flipping shall prevail; the old upper surface is abolished." This clause would, tomorrow, be placed into the first appendix note of the new capital’s material-yard acceptance standards.
Mehptah sat beside the small temporary hearth that the old artisans had encircled for themselves -- there was no longer fire in the hearth bottom, but the stone slab was still warm. He silently reviewed once more in his mind the several lines of tampered ink traces he had seen while verifying the roster today -- what he memorized was not the names of those who had been replaced, but the methodology used by the person altering the names: no deletion of the original text, no change to the handwriting; displacement altered the row-and-column correspondence, thereby deceiving the conventional roster-audit process. This methodology, within the temple’s scribal system, could not possibly have been used to alter only one scroll -- it was very likely simultaneously applied to the stone pre-registration ledgers brought in with the same batch, the temporary artisan wage-and-grain receipt stubs, and the new capital works-ledger base-volumes already submitted to the Theban Supplies Audit Institute. He wrote his roster-verification conclusions onto the auxiliary panel worn to half its original height by years of abrasion on his chisel haft -- tomorrow, at daybreak, when the first cart of new stone arrived at the material yard, he would check these pages against the direction of the stone’s source.
Kes and Mery had already recalibrated the right-angle square that would be used to measure the central-axis positioning tomorrow. At Wheat Hill Town, when measuring the official-granary wall corners, this square’s precision had been a deviation of less than one hair per five cubits of span -- but the temperature variation on the wilderness was far more extreme than in the river valley; the palm-timber square, under the day-night temperature differential, experienced thermal expansion and contraction of less than one-tenth of a hair each day. On most single-building worksites, this error could be ignored -- but in the citywide-scale central-axis positioning, from the northern-end palace to the southern-end storage district, nearly twelve hundred cubits, the cumulative error along the route, multiplied by the temperature-variation rate, would approach nearly a cubit and a half of deviation. They recorded the temperature correction value on the inner face of the square -- for every temperature change, the corresponding expansion-offset value was automatically registered in the error column for the preceding direction. This square would be the originating reference instrument for every brick wall and stone column’s orientation in the new capital -- its self-calibration mechanism had been fixed into the square itself by two young men before the formal foundation-opening had even begun.
And that crowd of local laborers who had come from Thebes to the new capital yet remained unassigned to crews -- the scribal clerk responsible for tallying them was startled awake from his mat in the midst of sleep: he had dreamed of the shadow-clock gnomon in the central square, canted by roughly two-thirds of a finger-width -- and of how, if the retaining walls followed this gnomon’s cant, every wall foundation extending outward from it in the future would, in chain reaction, drag the central axis off true. In his dream, he had straightened that post. In reality, he had no authority to touch it -- but he could, tomorrow morning, upon reaching the camp gate, clamp his ledger onto the stone platform inside the gate, use a slate stylus to make a fresh shadow-clock comparison at the north corner of the limestone slab, and write down the measured deviation angle. Any newly arriving person would have the right to know: this post cannot be used to calibrate the gate-face -- until it has been re-driven true, nothing is to be based on it. For a scribal clerk, this was the only thing he could do -- he placed the preemptive risk, through public annotation, somewhere others could see it.
At the camp’s southernmost edge, above that stretch of open sandy ground incorporated into no encampment boundary-line, a half-moon hung. The moonlight turned the exceedingly thin layer of floating white salt-powder on the sand surface into a layer of cold silver-white, so faint it was barely discernible -- someone walking toward the camp from a distance would only think it a stretch of sand surface moistened by night dew. But this was salt -- not water. The new capital’s alkaline-salt cycle had already begun to be written into the foundation diagram, starting from Mehptah’s alkaline-salt tongue-test samples during the day -- but at this moment, this moonlit salt-crusted sand surface was still in the wilderness, in a natural state untouched by any foundation design -- unburied, unbroken, undiverted. The next cycle -- new irrigation water, new drainage channels, the remote influence of great numbers of artisans on the foundation -- would alter the direction and amplitude of this old cycle of daily salt dissolution and recrystallization. But tonight -- beneath the moonlight, it remained the last self-sufficient natural alkaline-salt stratum in this uninhabited zone, serving no artificial purpose. Through the dark night, this white-salt ground had not been disturbed -- no footprints, no traces pressed by timber stakes, no boundaries cut by drainage pipes. The new capital had not yet seen a single foundation trench cut through this salt layer -- but tomorrow, beginning from Seb’s measurement of the nodule-layer boundary inward, and from the first alkaline-proof bedding layer that Lu Zhu would draw above the salt-dissolution layer -- this moonlit white salt would, for the first time, be brought within the governance of a man-made atlas.
There was not yet a single built city across the entire wilderness. But its foundation had already been drawn -- from the groundwater’s tilt direction, from the false-cemented layer of the northern high ground, from the West Bank’s standard moisture-barrier cross-sections, from the rough-face edge offcuts of Red Rock Slope, from the cobblestone grading method of White River Ford, from the riverbank service-road station-line of Hawk’s Wing Ford -- and from every person who had stood on the high platform and looked out across this barren land, reading the lines in their own palms -- using a method different from the old capital, the first outer frame had been silently traced beneath the sand. The construction of Akhetaten did not begin beneath the first stone block of the northern palace -- it had already begun from the crenellations of the West Bank in the previous volume. Volume Four -- will no longer be the argumentation of surveys and layered data cross-sections. It will be the landing -- the day the first spade drives down through the nodule layer to excavate the blind ditch, and the first lines of resistance, extended from the old clerks still operating through channels reaching back to the Theban temple, gradually pressing against the new capital’s works -- against the material lists and the manpower.
