Nightblade (Darkest night)
Chapter 334: Shadow Trial[17]
High on the frosted ledge of the adjacent commercial rooftop, Lucian Ash watched silently, assessing the situation down on the ground below.
His fingers closed around the grip of his dagger, the dark umbralis-infused metal absorbing the sector's harsh white light as if drinking it in.
Beside him, Samantha adjusted the grip on her spear, her dark eyes tracking the violent concussions shaking the ground below.
Xander had already slipped down the fire ladder with serpentine agility, positioning himself to cut off the eastern service corridor before Kaelen's support could reinforce the arcade.
"Remember the objective," Lucian murmured in a flat, clinical voice.
"We aren't here to break his skull. We simply need to restrain him until the objective is complete."
With a soft, fluid motion, Lucian dropped off the rooftop edge, falling several stories through the air into the open structural void of Sector Seven's library arcade.
Down in the frozen trench of the arcade, Edmund Brewer was running out of room to maneuver.
The air was a churning blender of razor-sharp ice crystals and hyper-compressed oxygen.
His breath came in ragged, frozen gasps, white mist tearing from his mouth and instantly crystallizing into brittle dust.
His lungs felt as though they were lined with broken glass, the relentless thermal strain of maintaining his defense against Cassius Wulfric's continuous, monstrous blows pushing his innate ice Talent to the absolute edge of its structural integrity.
Cassius's fists slammed empty into the frosted marble floor with a concussive shockwave that shattered the foundations beneath them, sending a jagged spiderweb of cracks tearing across the room and throwing him off balance for a split second.
"What—?" Cassius grunted, his momentum carrying him forward.
That fractional second was all Edmund needed.
"Predictable," Edmund hissed, his voice raw. He swept his right arm through the air, directly executing a targeted application of his Frost Anchor.
Thick, crystalline chains of dense ice erupted from the walls, wrapping violently around Cassius's ankles and slamming him down onto the slick floor.
Before Edmund could pivot to deal with Kaelen Sorel, the wind-infused rapier hissed through the freezing mist, aiming a lethal, high-pressure lance at his ribs.
Edmund twisted his torso, the tip of Kaelen's blade grazing his jacket and shearing away a strip of dark fabric.
But Kaelen's momentum carried him too far forward, overextending his reach. Edmund seized the opening, driving the heel of his boot into the marble and flash-freezing the moisture beneath Kaelen's soles.
Kaelen's feet slipped out from under him with a sharp cry, his rapier clattering away across the ice as he crashed hard onto his back.
"You're fighting for a leaderboard number, Sorel!" Edmund shouted, his chest heaving as he stood over the fallen heir, his hands glowing with a pale, dying blue light.
"You don't even know what the secure condition requires!"
"I know it requires you on the floor!" Kaelen snarled, kicking violently to scramble backward.
Before Kaelen could regain his footing, a shadow detached itself from the ceiling rafters above them.
Lucian Ash landed silently behind Edmund, his movement making no more sound than a falling leaf.
With surgical precision, Lucian brought his arm around in a swift, binding arc, snapping a standardized trial containment cuff onto Edmund's left wrist, instantly locking it to the heavy iron base of a marble pillar.
Edmund spun around, his eyes widening in sudden, bitter realization. "You..."
"You fought well, Edmund," Lucian said quietly, his face entirely impassive. "The best man won."

[REMAINING TIME: 00:10 ... 00:09 ... 00:08]
"You coward," Edmund spat, though his knees trembled beneath him from sheer exhaustion.
"You waited until the room had beaten me down."
"It was the most efficient approach," Lucian replied smoothly, stepping back two paces to maintain the containment perimeter while his eyes darted toward the arcade entrance.
"You could have intervened earlier," Edmund said, his teeth gritted against the biting cold of his own fading domain.
"And fought three contestants unnecessarily?" Lucian's dark eyes met Edmund's, steady and unreadable.
Edmund stared at him for a beat, the absurd truth of the situation cutting through his frustration. A dry, humorless breath escaped his lips, turning into a cloud of white fog.
I hate that you're making sense."
"Ten seconds," Lucian noted, ignoring the commentary.
"Hold the line."
From the shattered doorway, Cassius roared, ripping the ice chains off his ankles with a violent display of raw strength. His eyes locked onto Lucian standing beside the bound Edmund.
"GET AWAY FROM HIM, ASH!" Cassius bellowed, launching himself across the room.
Before Cassius could cross the threshold, a heavy shadow blurred from the side arcade. Samantha stepped directly into his path, her nebulous spear held horizontally.
The dark, lusterless mineral shaft met Cassius's charging bulk head-on.
Instead of the expected explosion of sound, only a dull, heavy thud resounded as the spear absorbed the kinetic shockwave entirely, the dark metal pulsing once with a deep, liquid shadow that stopped the ten-foot-tall momentum of the biological Talented dead in its tracks.
Cassius stumbled back, his eyes wide with shock as he stared at the unassuming weapon.
"Your fight is over, Cass," Samantha said quietly, her voice cutting through the ringing silence of the arcade.

[VERIFICATION: SUCCESSFUL]
[OBJECTIVE REWARD: 150 POINTS]
[WINNER: LUCIAN ASH]
A brilliant cascade of golden system light washed over the arcade, signaling the formal closure of the Phantom Target protocol.
Up in the VIP observation deck, Jax Sterling burst out laughing, slamming his hand against the console edge.
"Magnificent!" Jax crowed, pointing at the holographic feed below.
"Look at that! Cassius broke every window in the district, Kaelen nearly lost an arm, Edmund defended his bloodline like a Spartan king... and Lucian walks in at the last moment
and collects the check like a debt collector!"
Nadia Varas allowed a faint, approving smile to touch the corners of her mouth as she watched Samantha smoothly lower her spear, releasing Cassius from immediate threat.
That isn't luck, Jax," Nadia said, her silver-grey eyes gleaming with analytical satisfaction. "That is the absolute core of operational discipline. Lucian understood the difference between a fight and an objective. He let the system's psychological trap and the contestants' greed do the heavy lifting, then harvested the fruit the second it dropped."
"Oh, the Ash family is going to be insufferable at dinner tonight," Jax grinned, leaning back in his chair. "Lord Cedric is probably already drafting a press release about the perks of having a superior lineage."
Nadia turned her gaze away from the monitor toward the upper sector roads, where the distant silhouette of the leaderboard was automatically refreshing.
"Don't count the other houses out just yet. Look at the numbers."
The giant holographic standings flickered above the district.
[Lucian Ash]
[Affiliation: Assassin]

[Affiliation: Assassin]

[Warren Frost]
[Affiliation: Talented]
[270 points]
[Edmund Brewer]
[Affiliation: Talented]
[205 points]
Lucian had jumped straight to the summit with 395 points.
Samantha held firm in second with 360. But beneath them, the qualification matrix for the Talented was hovering on a razor-thin margin.
Down in the arcade, the cuffs dissolved with a soft hiss, releasing Edmund from the pillar.
Edmund rubbed his wrists, his face pale and tight with exhaustion, but his posture remained rigid.
He looked up at Lucian, who stood a few feet away.
"You take the points, Ash," Edmund said, his voice clipped and cold, though devoid of any anger.
"You earned them. But don't expect me to make it that easy at the Veilrend Games."
"I would be disappointed if you did," Lucian replied neutrally, offering a slight, formal nod of acknowledgment.
A few paces away, Cassius Wulfric let out an explosive puff of air, his massive shoulders slumping as the bronze colour of his A-2 Biological Talent faded from his skin.
He glared across the room at Lucian, his thick dreadlocks shifting as he shook his head in blunt disgust.
"Unbelievable," Cassius muttered, crossing his arms.
Kaelen Sorel picked his discarded rapier up from the slush, his face flushed with a mixture of physical fatigue and simmering humiliation.
He wiped a streak of soot off the silver guard, casting a sharp, resentful glance toward Edmund,d then at Lucian.
"You only won because I—"
"If you had been half as sharp as your mouth, Sorel, maybe you could have won, " Lucian said quietly, in a calm tone. He shook his head quietly.
" I guess we'll never know."
Kaelen's jaw tightened, but before he could snap back, Samantha lowered her spear. She let out a long, quiet exhale, her shoulders finally dropping from their combat-ready tension.
"The confrontation is over," Samantha said, her voice cutting through the tension in the air.
"The system has recorded the result. Standing here trading insults isn't going to adjust your standings on the board."
Up in the VIP observation deck, Jax Sterling burst out laughing, leaning back.
"Damnation!" Jax crowed. "Look at them—Cassius is ready to chew glass, Kaelen's pride is bruised beyond recognition, and Lucian is standing there, cool as a cucumber. What I wouldn't give to be him at this moment! Just hear the ladies! What a magnificent conclusion to a superb psychological trap."
