Nightblade (Darkest night)
Chapter 327: Shadow Trials[10]
The artificial sunlight of Sector Seven was almost unnaturally bright, casting sharp, defined shadows across the concrete pavements and glass storefronts.
?Samantha emerged from an alleyway in Sector 7-C, stepping onto a bustling sidewalk populated by hundreds of synthetic civilians.
The androids moved with remarkable realism—some were laughing outside a holographic coffee shop, others were rushing toward a mag-rail station holding briefcases. At the same time, groups of synthetic teenagers chatted near a clothing boutique.
?Samantha pulled her assigned terminal from her belt sheath and tapped the screen.
?[CONTESTANT: SAMANTHA]
[PACKET ID: 77-ALPHA]
PRIMARY TARGET DATA:
- CODENAME: "THE COURIER"
- KNOWN LOCATION: SECTOR 7-A (NORTHERN TRANSIT HUB)
- IDENTIFYING MARK: SILVER LAPEL PIN (TREE CREST)
- BEHAVIORAL NOTE: CARRIES A BLACK LEATHER CASE
- WITNESS STATEMENT: "HE BOARDS THE 08:30 MAG-RAIL."
RELIABILITY CONFIDENCE: 85%
?Samantha read the entry twice. 85% confidence. It looked crisp, precise, and actionable.
"Too actionable, she thought immediately.
?She looked around the street. To her left, high on a building facade, a massive holographic news ticker was displaying live updates from the Festival:
?[LIVE SCORE: SAMANTHA (310) l LUCIAN (245) | XANDER (235)]
?If the trial system was giving her a direct target five minutes away, it was either a test of speed or a deliberate trap designed to draw the overall leader into an early fifty-point penalty.
?Instead of sprinting toward Sector 7-A, Samantha closed her eyes and extended her senses.
She didn’t use umbralis—the number of security drones hovering above the street made loud energy signatures risky. Instead, she let her consciousness sink into her connection with the spear resting against her back.
?The dark mineral responded with a faint, cool pulse.
Through the soles of her boots, she felt the subtle vibrations of the artificial district—the electric hum of underground power conduits, the rhythmic clatter of mag-rail cars a mile away, and the distinct, unnaturally heavy footfalls of four contestants moving through the adjacent alleyways.
?One of those footfalls was light, quick, and erratic—changing direction every three seconds.
?Xander.
Three blocks away, in a narrow access corridor behind a row of commercial displays, Xander Gray was crouching on top of an air conditioning unit, looking down at his terminal with a wicked grin.
?[CONTESTANT: XANDER GRAY]
[PACKET ID: 12-BETA]
PRIMARY TARGET DATA:
- CODENAME: "THE INFORMANTS"
- KNOWN LOCATION: SECTOR 7-C (CENTRAL MARKET)
- IDENTIFYING MARK: WEARS A RED SCARF
ALERT: SECONDARY INTEL AVAILABLE VIA CONTESTANT 77-ALPHA
?"Oh, Headmaster Whizen, you devil," Xander whispered to himself, tossing his stylus into the air and catching it deftly. "You gave me half a target and told me Samantha has the rest."
Xander slipped off the unit, landing silently in an obscured alleyway.
?"Let’s see who comes biting first," Xander chuckled, slipping into the shadow of a maintenance shaft.
?Two sectors over, in the financial plaza of Sector 7-B, Warren stood motionless beside a grand stone fountain.
?Synthetic businessmen in suits hurried past him, completely oblivious to his presence. Warren ignored his terminal for the moment.
He had read his packet—it contained a vague description of an archivist carrying an encrypted flash drive—but rather than chasing the clue immediately, he was analyzing the physical environment.
?Warren began walking calmly toward the office building.
?As he walked, he noticed a group of five spectators standing on an elevated glass pedestrian bridge above the plaza.
?Among them was Cedric Ash, the Head of House Ash and Lucian’s father.
?Cedric wore an impeccably tailored dark coat, his hands resting on a gold-topped cane. His face was carved from granite—unreadable, cold, and severe.
He wasn’t talking to the academy directors beside him. His sharp, dark eyes followed Warren’s movements for a brief second before shifting across the plaza to track his son, Lucian, who was currently moving through a crowded transit terminal two blocks away.
Warren didn’t look up at the bridge again, but he subtly adjusted his posture.
?"The Great Houses aren’t just watching scores today," Warren realized. "They’re also evaluating our efficiency."
?In Sector 7-A’s transit station, Lucian slowly moved through the crowd.
?Instead of blending into the shadows like Xander, he chose to become one with the crowd.
He wore a simple dark jacket over his uniform, moving at the exact average pace of the synthetic commuters surrounding him.
?His terminal displayed three conflicting reports regarding "The Courier."
?[REPORT A: COURIER IS ON PLATFORM THREE - MALE, GREY COAT]
[REPORT B: COURIER IS ON PLATFORM ONE - FEMALE, BLUE SCARF]
[REPORT C: COURIER HAS ALREADY BOARDED THE 08:30 TRAIN]
?Instead of choosing one based on probability, he verified them systematically.
?He stopped near a digital transit board, pulling a pair of thin, silver-rimmed analytical lenses from his pocket and slipping them over his eyes. These were the latest optical filters designed to detect subtle electromagnetic emissions.
He scanned Platform 3. The male in the grey coat was a standard synthetic model—its internal battery pack emitted a uniform, low-grade thermal signature typical of mass-produced civilian androids.
?He scanned platform one. The female in the blue scarf was identical.
?Then he scanned the maintenance catwalk above platform two.
?Sitting on a steel girder twenty feet above the platform was a synthetic figure dressed as a track inspector.
But its internal core wasn’t a standard battery—it was a high-capacity encrypted data core emitting a distinct, localized radio frequency.
?"Verification complete," Lucian murmured.
?Leaping toward the catwalk would attract attention and invite interference from other contestants.
Lucian stepped toward a fire alarm housing on the platform wall. He reached inside his sleeve, pulled out a thin, silver needle, and inserted it into the manual override.
A split second later, he sent a false signal to the station’s automated maintenance drone, directing it to inspect platform two for a structural fault.
?The heavy automated drone rumbled to life, swinging its mechanical arm up.
?The disguised synthetic target on the catwalk, programmed to avoid maintenance units to prevent discovery, immediately shifted its position, dropping down toward an emergency exit door.
?Except Lucian was already waiting at the bottom of the exit stairwell.
As the target landed, Lucian stepped forward, his right hand moving in a swift, silent arc.
He struck the target’s primary central processor behind its ear with two fingers, delivering a sharp blow that cleanly shut down its motor functions without causing structural damage.
?Lucian reached into the target’s coat, pulled out a glowing golden data chip, and inserted it into his terminal.
?[TARGET VERIFIED: "THE COURIER" (GENUINE)]
[100 POINTS AWARDED TO CONTESTANT: LUCIAN]
[CURRENT SCORE: 345 PTS]
?A soft chime echoed across the district’s public address system, updating the live leaderboard.
