Nightblade (Darkest night)
Chapter 325: Shadow Trials[8]
?"You took an unreasonable risk down there," Lucian said, his voice quiet, almost lost beneath the roar of the crowd.
It won the fight," Samantha replied.
Lucian’s lips twitched slightly—the closest he had ever come to a smile.
"For now, Samantha. For now."
?Xander slouched over, throwing his arms behind his head with a dramatic sigh.
"Man, I was five seconds away from that Prime Seal. You Talented are way too aggressive when you’re backed into a corner."
?"We have to be," Warren noted, walking up beside Samantha. "Otherwise, you assassins take everything."
?Above them, in the high observation gallery of Pyreptar Academy, Headmaster Gregory Whizen looked down at the arena floor, his gloved hands resting on the gilded railing.
Behind him sat the hooded representatives of the Council of Assassins, their sharp eyes fixed on the girl holding the dark, mineral spear.
Trial Two was over.
But as the crowd cheered and the holographic displays flared with the announcement of the upcoming third trial, she knew the hardest battle was still ahead.
The next day, maintenance drones hovered in tidy formation along the perimeter over the shattered basalt slabs near the subterranean entrance where Trial Two had concluded the previous night.
The scent of burnt ozone still hung faintly in the air, mingling with the crisp bite of the cold autumn morning breeze.
Inside the glass-walled dining terrace overlooking the main quad, the atmosphere was thick with a different kind of tension.
?Holographic projections suspended above the central walkways refreshed every three minutes, broadcasting the official cumulative standings.
Every student, instructor, and visiting liaison had their eyes glued to the numbers.
More importantly, to the unexpected dark horse whose name stood at the top

At a long stone table near the edge of the terrace, Samantha sat with a steaming cup of dark black tea between her hands.
Her shoulders were stiff, muscles still aching from the sheer physical strain of wielding the tenebrous spear the night before.
"Three hundred and ten," Emily said, tapping her finger against the polished tabletop for emphasis.
"Do you know what they’re calling you? The Spear Maiden!" Emily squealed.
Samantha said quietly, taking a small sip of her tea. Her dark eyes drifted toward the six-foot length of black mineral resting in a leather carrying harness beside her chair.
The spear looked completely harmless under the morning sunlight—lusterless, stone-like, and silent. Yet she could still feel the faint, cold resonance deep within her.
Emily reached across to snatch a pastry from Samantha’s plate. She took a deliberate bite, chewing thoughtfully before continuing. "You’re first on the board, Sam. You’re the story of the Festival right now. Everyone wants to know where that spear came from."
?"And what does Headmaster Whizen tell them?"
?"He tells them to mind their own business
"Seriously though... I’m proud of you. Without you and Warren taking those risks in the lower tier, Lucian and Xander would have run away with the leaderboard."
"Warren is a rock," Emily agreed, leaning back in her chair.
"He doesn’t care about the applause. He just wants the numbers to work out so the academy doesn’t lose its qualification quota for the Veilrend Games."
She paused, her eyes flickering with a momentary playful tease. "Must be nice not having to worry about qualification points, though. Being seeded directly into the Games as Merlin’s apprentice has its perks."
?Samantha let out a dry, breathy laugh.
"Don’t rub it in.
Their conversation trailed off as a shadow fell across the table.
Samantha didn’t reach for her spear, but her body shifted instantly into a subtle, balanced posture.
?Standing a few feet away was Kaelen Sorel.
?The heir of House Sorel looked immaculately groomed in his dark blue academy jacket, but the subtle dark circles beneath his sharp gray eyes betrayed a sleepless night.
Behind him stood two heavy operatives from his house’s personal security detail, standing with their arms crossed.
?Kaelen’s gaze flicked from Samantha’s face to the leaderboard floating above the terrace, then back to her spear.
His jaw tightened.
?"Enjoying the view from the top?" Kaelen asked. His tone was cool, carefully measured, but the edge of suppressed frustration was unmistakable.
" It’s loud up here," Samantha replied evenly. She didn’t stand up.
"Did you need something, Kaelen?"
?Kaelen stepped closer, stopping just outside the boundary of their table.
"I came to remind you that temporary spikes on a point-accumulation board don’t equate to lasting authority. Trial Two was a chaotic extraction. You got lucky."
Emily raised an eyebrow, setting her pastry down. "Lucky? Kaelen, she crushed three Abyssal Sentinels by taking down a cavern ceiling while standing in a null-field. If that’s luck, I’d hate to see what you consider skill."
?Kaelen didn’t look at Emily. His focus remained locked on Samantha.
Before Samantha could answer, a tall, gray-haired man stepped out from the archway leading to the administration block.
He wore a high-collared black coat bearing the silver crest of House Sorel on the lapel. His posture was stiff, impeccably formal, and his presence carried the heavy, unmistakable weight of an elder who expected absolute obedience.
?"Kaelen," the elder said. His voice was not loud, but it cut through the hum of the terrace like a blade through silk.
?Kaelen froze, his shoulders going rigid.
?"Elder Vane," Kaelen said, turning slightly while maintaining his composure.
?The elder walked forward, his polished leather boots clicking rhythmically against the stone. He ignored Samantha and Emily entirely, stopping a few feet from Kaelen.
"You are wasting time indulging in public displays of pettiness," Elder Vane said coldly.
"Your uncle has already arrived at the main spire. He expects House Sorel to rank no lower than third by the end of today’s events. You are the heir present at this academy. Do not disgrace us."
?Kaelen’s throat moved as he swallowed. "Understood, Elder."
?"The preparation briefing begins in ten minutes," Elder Vane added, turning his back without another word and walking toward the lift.
"See that you are ready."
?Kaelen lingered for a single second, his chest rising and falling in controlled breaths.
He gave Samantha a sharp, curt nod—less a sign of respect and more a declaration of intent—before turning on his heel and following the elder, his two guards trailing silently behind him.
