New Eden: Live to Play, Play to Live
Chapter 1139: Goodnight, Eye In The Sky
Leaving the bowstring like a comet of pitch-black fire, the arrow of coalesced darkness shot into the night sky, almost instantly blending into the colours of the moonlit sky and disappearing to everyone present.
It was only a few seconds later that it became clear as to what the target was, when a flash of light the size of a grain of sand briefly appeared amongst the stars.
No one knew what this was, as they couldn’t see what caused the flash, aside from Yeoja. And she smiled.
"I bought us a little privacy for the night. You’re welcome," she said with a wide smile.
Kujaku looked up and realized what her words meant.
Only one thing flew that high without being visible to the naked eye: spy satellites.
She turned her head to the Korean girl, her mouth slightly open. How the girl could see it at all was a question she wanted answered, sure, but another one popped out of her mouth first.
"How did you even hit it? Seeing it is already more than impressive, but shooting it out of orbit is not impressive; it’s impossible. Those things more at about twenty-eight thousand kilometres an hour. Predicting its trajectory is nigh impossible, or at the very least improbable. I need answers."
The sudden question carpet bombing took Yeoja aback . She wasn’t sure whether to answer them one by one, or even at all, before someone else interrupted Kujaku’s intense staring.
"Lady Aoi, we have more pressing issues," one of her henchmen said, kneeling before her.
"What now?" she practically barked, glaring at him.
The man gulped at her sudden aggressiveness, but did his duty nonetheless.
"We have reports that a spy satellite associated with the syndicate has just been shot out of low orbit. If our sources are correct, that means they were close to finding us and have a bead on our current location. We need to move."
Kujaku clicked her tongue. Her information network might not have been as expansive or well-connected as her father’s, but she knew it could still be trusted.
"How long had it been stalled in place? If it had just gotten into position, it means it only has a very broad clue. I doubt they have the manpower currently to canvas an entire province of the Chinese countryside."
The man remained silent for a few moments before opening his mouth to respond.
"Apparently, only a couple of minutes. But that would still be enough to zoom in a camera to only a few hundred square kilometres. Our position might as well have been given."
With such a smaller area of searching, it could be canvassed a lot faster, and she knew it. Especially so if they had other awakened people working for them.
She clicked her tongue with annoyance on her face.
"We practically just set up camp, and now you want us to pack our shit and leave? Are you trying to mock your colleagues’ efforts?"
The man looked up at her before looking around him at his colleagues and saw their annoyed faces.
"No, Ma’am. Not at all. I am just doing my job of keeping you safe. That is, after all, our priority," he said, emphasizing his last words.
The other agents of Kujaku immediately stopped glaring at him, realizing they were forgetting their duty to guard their lady. Of course, most of them were extremely tired, and the fatigue had only temporarily pushed their reason away.
They quickly started getting ready to pack their things and demolish the little huts they had built, but their boss interrupted their movements.
"We are not moving an inch from here. All of us are exhausted, in bad physical shape, and some, an even worse mental shape. We need to rest, and it will be here."
Her orders sounded final and left no room for negotiation.
It was Kary who finally bit the bullet and pushed the question they all had on their minds.
"What about our safety? If the Syndicate comes at us in the middle of the night, while most of us are sleeping, wouldn’t we be in much more trouble than if we move some more and push our fatigue back a bit further?"
But Kujaku looked at her with a smug face.
"I wouldn’t have thought the great Phoenix to be scared of a few nightly skirmishes," she mocked.
But before Kary could reply that her reasoning differed, Kujaku interrupted her train of thought.
"Regardless, that will not be an issue. They won’t be able to find us tonight. Not if I’m on guard duty," she said confidently.
Alex’s face lit up.
He understood her underlying words instantly.
"Are you finally going to use Fey magic?" he asked, almost in jubilation.
Of all the magics in New Eden, he had hardly seen any of them in the tournament, and had yet to step foot inside the Fey country.
Seeing it in the game would have filled him with pleasure. Seeing outside of the game?
That went without saying that he was excited.
Kujaku looked at his beaming face, realizing she was looking at a child finding out about buried treasure, and chuckled.
"Calm down, Wolfie. A; yes, I will be using some of the fey magic. B; It’s not that revolutionary. Most of the illusion magic they use is nothing more than smoke and mirrors, nothing to write home about. But the high-level stuff, that is different."
The way she spoke made Alexander hopeful that he would get to see firsthand some high-level illusion.
"Then we get to see a high-level illusion spell?! Oh boy, I can’t wait!," he said, getting giddy.
But his bubble was quickly popped before it could grow oversized.
"Sadly, I don’t know those spells, even inside New Eden, let alone back in the real world. No. What I’ll be using is exactly that; smoke and mirrors," she said, her smug face stretching further into a mocking grin.
Alex’s face dropped.
"Goddamn it!"
