Necromancer: Kingdom Building with My Legion of Undead Knights
Chapter 281: War Chase
The battlefield was littered with the dead. Bodies lay scattered across the blood-soaked earth, their armor dented, their weapons still clutched in lifeless hands.
The air was thick with the smell of iron and sweat, the sounds of dying men fading into an eerie silence. Vrethka had won the battle, but the war was not yet over.
Vrethka had about two hundred men left now. They had many more before, perhaps almost double that number, but now it was just two hundred.
The war had been brutal, relentless, and the cost had been heavy. Good men had fallen, their lives sacrificed for the survival of their people. But they had held on. They had fought. And now, they had the upper hand.
Harrowhold had about a hundred men left. They had started with way more, but Vrethka's warriors had whittled them down, cutting through their ranks like a scythe through wheat.
The enemy was weakened, battered, and demoralized. Their morale was shattered, their will to fight broken.
They were no longer the aggressive invaders who had come to claim Vrethka's land. They were desperate men, fighting for their lives.
A messenger approached Dross, his face pale, his breath ragged. He bowed his head and spoke, his voice trembling. "War Chief Dross, the enemy has sent word. They say they are fighting no more. They want to end the war."
Dross's eyes narrowed. He looked at the messenger, his expression unreadable. "They want to end the war?" he repeated, his voice flat.
"Yes, War Chief. They say they will withdraw from our lands and never return. They offer peace."
The warriors around Dross exchanged glances. Some of them looked relieved, their shoulders sagging with exhaustion. Others looked skeptical, their eyes narrowing with suspicion. A few of them began to murmur among themselves, their voices low and uncertain.
Dross was silent for a long moment, his mind turning over the implications of the enemy's offer. He thought about the men he had lost, the friends who had fallen, the families who would never see their loved ones again.
He thought about the blood that had been spilled, the sacrifices that had been made, the price of survival.
And then he made his decision.
"End the war?" he said, his voice rising. "They want to end the war? After everything they've done? After the lives they've taken, the homes they've burned, the families they've destroyed? They think they can just walk away?"
He turned to his warriors, his eyes blazing with fury. "No. We will not end the war. We will end them."
The warriors cheered, their voices rising in a roar of approval. They had been fighting for days, had watched their friends die, had endured countless hardships. And now, they had a chance to finish it. To end the threat once and for all.
Dross raised his axe, his voice carrying across the field. "We will not accept their peace. We will not let them retreat. We will hunt them down, every last one of them. We will show them what it means to attack Vrethka."
The warriors surged forward, their weapons raised, their voices shouting in unison. "For Vrethka! For Vrethka!"
And they charged.
The chase began. Two hundred Vrethka warriors pursued the hundred remaining Harrowhold soldiers, their boots pounding against the earth, their weapons gleaming in the dim light.
The enemy was retreating, their formation broken, their morale shattered. They were running for their lives.
The Harrowhold soldiers were desperate, their faces pale with fear. They had started the war with confidence, with the belief that they would win. But now, they were fleeing, their dreams of victory crushed by the relentless assault of Vrethka's warriors.
The chase was chaotic and brutal. The Vrethka warriors moved like a tide, sweeping across the battlefield, cutting down anyone who lagged behind.
The enemy tried to regroup, to form a defensive line, but they were too disorganized, too frightened to mount a proper resistance.
The commander of the Harrowhold forces was the son of the Harrowhold leader, a young man named Marrick. His father, the old and fat ruler of Harrowhold, was unable to be on the battlefield.
He had sent his son to lead the army, believing that youth and vigor would be enough to secure victory. But Marrick was not his father. He was inexperienced, unsure of himself, and now, his army was crumbling around him.
Marrick rode at the front of his retreating forces, his face pale, his hands trembling on the reins of his horse.
He could hear the shouts of the Vrethka warriors behind him, could feel the ground shaking beneath their feet. They were coming for him, and he knew that if they caught him, he would not survive.
"Ride!" he shouted, his voice cracking with fear. "Ride for your lives!"
But his men were too tired, too wounded, too broken to obey. They stumbled and fell, their bodies consumed by the advancing tide of Vrethka warriors.
The chase continued, a relentless pursuit that would not end until every last Harrowhold soldier was dead.
The Vrethka warriors caught up with the stragglers first. Twenty of the enemy soldiers had fallen behind, their legs too weak to carry them, their spirits too broken to fight.
The Vrethka warriors fell upon them like wolves, their weapons flashing, their shouts echoing across the field. The twenty soldiers tried to fight back, but they were overwhelmed, surrounded, and cut down in moments.
Dross ordered some of his men to stay behind and finish them off. "Make sure they don't get up," he said, his voice cold. "We can't afford to leave any survivors."
Dross's aim was to kill all of the Harrowhold warriors that were fleeing and he was hell-bent on doing so. He wanted not even a single soul to escape.
A group of Vrethka warriors peeled off from the main force, their weapons raised, their faces grim. They descended on the fallen soldiers, finishing the job with brutal efficiency.
The remaining Vrethka warriors continued the chase, their eyes fixed on the retreating enemy.
