Naruto: The Shameless Uchiha Tycoon
Chapter 81: Kushina’s Quiet House
The estate was too quiet after sunset.
uring the day, the estate hummed with a low, steady energy. Guards rotated shifts along the perimeter walls, Kakuzu muttered about supply invoices like they were personal betrayals.
But at night, with the business of the village paused and the staff asleep, the silence crept back in.
Kushina sat at the kitchen island, staring at a mug of green tea she had brewed over an hour ago. It was completely cold. Her hands were moving mechanically, folding and unfolding the same soft, blue baby blanket for the fourth time.
Naruto was fast asleep in his crib a few feet away, entirely unaware that his mother had folded the same blanket four times.
A messenger from Hokage Tower had dropped off an update on Naruto’s protection detail earlier that afternoon. The young ANBU had been careful, polite, and completely unaware of the damage he caused when he mentioned the news before leaving.
Jiraiya had returned to the village.
Kushina smoothed out a nonexistent wrinkle on the blue blanket. Minato’s teacher had come back. He had arrived in Konoha after Minato was already gone, and he had gone straight to Hiruzen. He had visited Tsunade at the hospital. He had even tracked down Ren in the middle of the commercial district for a confrontation.
He had not come to see her.
She did not need Jiraiya to rescue her. She wasn’t a fragile, helpless thing waiting for a legendary Sannin to swoop in and fix her life. But he was family-adjacent. Minato had respected him deeply. Naruto was named after the protagonist of his first book.
She just hated that he had come home and still managed to make her feel like an afterthought.
Footsteps echoed softly in the hallway.
Ren walked into the kitchen, his navy suit jacket slung over one shoulder and his tie completely loosened. He looked tired, carrying the distinct, tired in the way only ledgers, contractors, and village politics could make a man tired.
He stopped near the doorway, noticing the kitchen light. His dark eyes flicked from the cold tea to the overly folded blanket, and finally to Kushina.
"If this is about stove gas usage," Ren said smoothly, walking over to the counter, "Kakuzu already opened a separate household ledger. You can boil water without fear of bankruptcy."
Normally, Kushina would have rolled her eyes or fired back a sharp insult about his cheap security contractor.
Tonight, she didn’t laugh. She didn’t even smile.
Ren paused. He draped his jacket over the back of a chair and dropped the corporate smirk entirely. He didn’t become overly soft, but his tone shifted into something significantly quieter.
"Bad night?" Ren asked, leaning against the counter.
Kushina looked down at the blanket. "Jiraiya came back."
Ren didn’t flinch. He didn’t offer a polite deflection or pretend he didn’t know. He just stayed quiet, letting her speak.
"I know he’s a loud idiot," Kushina said, her voice tight, a mix of anger and exhaustion bleeding into the quiet room. "I know he travels. I know his spy network is important. But he should have been here, Ren. And now he’s back, and he’s out there treating my son like a village issue instead of a baby."
She gripped the edges of the blanket.
"Everyone from the administration to the elders asks where the jinchūriki is," Kushina said bitterly. "Danzo’s people monitor the wards. Jiraiya asks if the seal is stable. Nobody asks if Naruto slept through the night. They keep saying ’the boy’ like he isn’t lying ten feet away with milk on his chin."
Ren poured himself a glass of water, taking a slow sip. He didn’t try to offer a grand, heroic speech. He didn’t tell her it was going to be okay. He simply listened.
Kushina looked up at him, her violet eyes flashing. "Did he really accuse you of holding me hostage?"
"More or less," Ren replied flatly.
"I am not a hostage," Kushina stated, her voice hardening.
"I know," Ren said, setting his glass down. "Hostages do not reorganize my pantry and threaten my staff over soup quality."
The sheer deadpan delivery finally broke the tension. A tiny, involuntary breath of a laugh escaped Kushina’s lips before she could stop it.
Ren looked at her, his expression entirely sincere. "Naruto is here because you chose it, Kushina. Anyone who forgets that can argue with you before they argue with me."
Kushina let out a long, shaky exhale, the fight slowly draining out of her shoulders. She looked around the massive, quiet kitchen. It was safe. It was heavily guarded. It was completely untouched by the devastation outside the compound walls.
"In the cave, I knew what I was supposed to do," Kushina admitted, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Protect Naruto. Keep breathing. Fight. That was it. But here..."
She traced the rim of her cold teacup.
"Here, everything is quiet, and I don’t know what I’m supposed to do with that."
Ren watched her for a moment. He didn’t offer hollow platitudes about moving on or staying strong for her son. He answered in his own language.
"Then don’t do anything with it tonight," Ren said.
Kushina looked up at him.
"Sit," Ren instructed calmly. "Drink tea. Insult Jiraiya. Check on Naruto too many times. Tomorrow can be expensive enough on its own."
Kushina stared at him for a moment. Then some of the tightness in her shoulders eased.
It was not much. Just her shoulder against his arm.
Tonight, that was enough.
Kushina stood up from her stool, picking up her cold tea, and walked around the island to stand beside him. She leaned against the edge of the counter, and after a moment of hesitation, she let her shoulder drop, resting it gently against his arm.
It wasn’t romantic. It was simply the heavy, grounding comfort of not being alone in a silent house.
"Don’t say anything stupid for five minutes," Kushina muttered.
"I’ll invoice you for the effort," Ren replied without missing a beat.
She laughed quietly, the sound finally reaching her eyes. She wasn’t healed. The grief was still sitting heavily in her chest. But the crushing weight of the silent estate felt significantly lighter.
A tiny, protesting noise drifted from the corner of the room.
Both of them looked over instantly. Naruto was squirming in his crib, letting out a small, grumpy whine as he tangled his tiny legs in his blanket.
Kushina moved to stand up, but Ren was already closer. He walked over to the crib and reached down. He wasn’t naturally gifted at this, but he had watched Mikoto and Kushina enough to know the mechanics. He awkwardly but securely scooped the newborn up, carefully supporting the back of his head, and held him against his chest.
Naruto blinked sleepily, his tiny fists bunching against Ren’s white shirt.
Kushina stayed by the counter, watching them. The sight of the ruthless Uchiha tycoon carefully holding her son sent a strange, warm feeling through her chest. He wasn’t just a rich landlord or a political shield anymore. He was slowly becoming a fixed, reliable part of Naruto’s safe world.
Ren looked down at the baby, his brow furrowing slightly.
"Your maintenance costs are absurd for someone with no revenue stream," Ren muttered to the child.
"He is a baby, Ren," Kushina pointed out, walking over.
"That explains the poor financial discipline," Ren noted, shifting his grip as Naruto let out a soft yawn.
Kushina smiled, a genuine, warm expression that finally chased the lingering shadows from her face. She reached out, gently taking Naruto from Ren’s arms and settling him against her shoulder. The baby immediately nuzzled into her collarbone, drifting back to sleep.
She gently rubbed Naruto’s back, her eyes looking toward the dark windows facing the village.
"Jiraiya will want to see him tomorrow," Kushina said quietly.
"Then he can ask you," Ren said.
Kushina looked over at him.
"Not Hiruzen. Not the elders. Not Danzo’s people. And not me," Ren stated firmly, his dark eyes locking onto hers. "You."
The words landed perfectly. Kushina’s grip on Naruto steadied. For the first time all night, she looked less like someone waiting for the next order and more like Naruto’s mother again.
"Good," Kushina said softly.
For the first time that night, Kushina looked around the quiet house and did not seem swallowed by it.
Naruto slept peacefully against her shoulder.
Ren said nothing stupid.
It was, by his standards, a heroic expense.
