The air inside the Great Colosseum was so thick it could almost be cut with a kunai. The stands, packed to capacity with thousands of spectators, nobles from the Land of Fire and Wind, and delegations from the Four Great Nations, held their breath in unison.
The cheers from previous matches had given way to a reverent, suffocating tension. The Chūnin Tournament finals were not merely a sporting event; they were the public showcase where the future balance of power in the shinobi world would be measured.
In the center of the restored arena, two figures slowly emerged from opposite tunnels.
Naruto Uzumaki walked forward with a firm step. Despite the exhaustion accumulated from his fierce battles against Sunae and Daiku, his blue eyes burned with unyielding determination. He adjusted his Konoha headband, feeling the flow of his chakra stabilize. Fifteen meters ahead, Kimimaro advanced with icy, absolute elegance. The white-haired Sand ninja, clad in his fitted combat uniform, kept his deep green eyes fixed on the blond, showing not the slightest hint of fatigue after shattering Gaara's crystal prison.
The Jōnin referee took three steps toward the center, raising his right hand. The silence in the stadium became so complete that the faint whistle of the desert wind over the upper structures echoed like a distant whisper.
"The grand final of the Chūnin Tournament begins now!" the referee proclaimed, his voice echoing off the stone walls. "Contestants, ready!"
Naruto bent his knees, crossing his fingers into his signature clone seal. Kimimaro reached his right hand toward his left shoulder, prepared to deploy his Shikotsumyaku bone plates.
The referee's arm began to drop.
However, the signal was never finished.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!
A deep, gargantuan, unfathomable roar echoed not from above, but from the very bowels of the earth. The colosseum platform didn't merely vibrate; it jolted violently several inches into the air. A seismic shockwave rippled through the reinforced stone tiles, cracking the center of the ring and causing the stadium's massive outer walls to groan with the sound of fracturing stone.
The crowd in the stands erupted in a collective scream of panic. Thousands rose to their feet, losing their balance as second and third tremors shook the entire village.
On the battlefield, Naruto's eyes widened in shock as he dug his fingers into the dirt to keep from falling sideways. "What the hell is this?! An earthquake?!"
Kimimaro, however, did not lose his composure. He steadied his stance instantly, but instead of looking at Naruto, his head snapped toward the Kage Box at the highest point of the colosseum's north side.
Inside the Kage Box, the atmosphere froze in a split second.
As dust fell from the stone ceiling and silk curtains swayed violently from the seismic vibration, Daigo remained seated on his Kazekage throne. He showed not the slightest hint of surprise. As he felt the shockwave traveling through the subterranean layers of the desert, his lips curved upward into a subtle, calm smile.
He closed his eyes for a second.
Through his Seismic Sense, Daigo's perception expanded instantaneously far beyond the walls of the colosseum—sweeping through the alleys of Sunagakure, stretching across the massive Crystal Dome protecting the village, and projecting miles out into the vastness of the outer dunes. During these years of peace, Daigo had not wasted time; he had pushed his seismic sense far beyond its previous limits.
In his mind, a blueprint of pressure waves revealed the complete picture: a massive force of thousands of chakra signatures advancing in a wedge formation from the north, accompanied by a colossal, dense, and brutally heavy chakra presence.
None of the Kage present had moved from their seats. Minato Namikaze, the Fifth Hokage, maintained a stern expression, analyzing the nature of the tremor. A, the Fourth Raikage, clenched his fists on the armrests of his wooden chair, the veins at his temples bulging in anticipation.
However, the bodyguards did not display the same diplomatic stillness.
On either side of the Third Tsuchikage Ōnoki's chair, shadows moved. The two elite Iwagakure ninja serving as his personal escort lunged forward as flashes of pure speed. With kunai drawn and infused with Earth Release chakra, they thrust straight for the necks of the two porcelain-masked ANBU standing guard behind Daigo.
The surprise attack aimed for a clean, instantaneous double decapitation.
CLANG! CRACK!
The two Sand ANBU reacted with superhuman speed. Without taking a single step back, they parried the attackers' blades with their own reinforced tantō. The force of the collision generated a shockwave that shattered the porcelain masks of the Sunagakure defenders.
Fragments of white ceramic flew through the air, hitting the ground with a dry clatter.
As the dust cleared, the faces of the two supposed ANBU were exposed for everyone in the box to see.
To Daigo's left stood Pakura, her green and orange hair tied in a high bun, her eyes blazing with murderous ferocity as a suffocating aura of heat began to radiate from her body. To his right was Rasa, his eyes narrowed as a trail of Gold Dust began to stream from his sleeves like a swarm of golden wasps.
Ōnoki, hovering barely a few inches above his wooden seat, widened his eyes. Surprise flashed across his wrinkled face before he could mask it with his usual coldness.
"Pakura... Rasa..." Ōnoki hissed raspily. "So you weren't mere anonymous escorts. You had your entire military high command disguised in your shadow."
Daigo slowly opened his eyes. His gaze met that of the elderly Tsuchikage.
"Tell me, Ōnoki..." Daigo spoke, his calm, deep voice echoing through the box without needing to raise his tone. "Have you finally stopped wasting time? I thought it would take you ten more minutes to make up your mind and act."
Minato Namikaze and Raikage A turned their heads toward Daigo. The revelation that the Kazekage was not only unsurprised, but had anticipated the attack, left a tense silence in the room.
Ōnoki frowned deeply, the lines on his face turning as hard as granite.
"You knew?" Ōnoki accused, narrowing his eyes with suspicion. "If you knew my army was on the move and this invasion was coordinated... why didn't you take advantage of the element of surprise to strike first in this box? You could have tried to kill me before I made a move."
Daigo let out a low, bitter laugh, steeped in absolute confidence. He rested his elbows on his knees and clasped his fingers in front of his face.
"Strike first?" Daigo asked with a faint, mocking smile. "Where is the fun in making the first move when you are the strongest? I preferred to let you deploy all your pieces so I could crush them all together."
Daigo's words fell like an axe blow. The provocation was blatant—a direct insult to the dignity of the oldest living shinobi.
"You arrogant little brat!" Ōnoki roared.
Without wasting a single millisecond on further words, Ōnoki executed a swift hand seal. The stone platform beneath the royal box began to twist. Modules of reinforced rock molded at breakneck speed, transforming into dozens of sharp stone spikes that shot straight out of the ground toward Daigo's position.
THUMP!
Daigo didn't bother to block. With a fluid movement, he launched himself backward in a vertical leap, crashing through the wooden ceiling of the box and landing on the upper roof structure of the colosseum. Pakura and Rasa vanished from his sides using Body Flicker techniques, dodging the stone spikes that utterly destroyed the Kazekage's throne.
While the battle in the command box erupted, the true scale of the invasion was unleashed on the outer perimeter of Sunagakure.
Miles away from the colosseum, at the village boundary, stood the imposing Giant Crystal Dome alongside the reinforced stone walls. It was a barrier considered impenetrable, engineered by Daigo to withstand prolonged sieges and heavy ninjutsu assaults.
However, beyond the outer wall, the desert was far from empty.
A colossal mass of scalding steam billowed into the blue sky. At the center of the dunes, the terrifying silhouette of the Five-Tails stood tall. The Tailed Beast—a majestic hybrid of a horse and a dolphin covered in white armor—snorted clouds of superheated air. In front of its mouth, the sunlight distorted.
A monstrous amount of blue and red chakra compressed at a terrifying speed. The ultra-dense particles condensed into a black and violet sphere several meters in diameter.
A Tailed Beast Bomb.
"Fire!" came the amplified order from the Iwagakure command ranks.
The Five-Tails unleashed the Tailed Beast Bomb on a straight, devastating trajectory. The sphere of pure energy crossed the desert like a dark comet, howling with a roar that broke the sound barrier.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!
The impact against the outer crystal wall was catastrophic. A shockwave of wind, fire, and crystalline shrapnel expanded in a radius of over a mile. The raw pressure of the Bijūdama shattered the reinforced slabs and blew through the Crystal Dome, carving a monumental breach over fifty meters wide into the village's perimeter defenses.
The curtain of dust and pulverized crystal hadn't even begun to settle when the battle cry echoed across the desert.
"Charge! Destroy Sunagakure!"
Thousands of Iwagakure ninja, clad in their red uniforms and brown Earth tactical vests, surged over the dunes. They poured through the massive breach like a wave of destruction, swords drawn and Earth Release seals ready to level the village's residential districts.
However, Sunagakure was not unprepared.
Within the village limits, along the main avenues and clay rooftops leading toward the colosseum, the defensive response was instantaneous. The village war alarms did not sound out of panic; they sounded as the signal to sprung a carefully laid trap.
From the shadows of the deserted streets emerged seven figures. They wore dark wraps and tactical combat robes, and on their backs or waists, they carried the most lethal weapons in the history of the Sand.
The Seven Espada of the Sand.
The elite of Sunagakure, warned well in advance by direct orders from Daigo and Rasa, did not hesitate for a second to move and neutralize the Iwa vanguard units that had previously infiltrated the village using underground camouflage techniques.
On the eastern avenue, a squad of fifteen Iwa ninja emerged from the earth, ready to plant explosive tags on the supply towers.
"Infiltrators at twelve o'clock!" the Iwa captain barked. "Deploy the explosive—"
The order choked in his throat.
A massive shadow fell upon them from above. Kisame Hoshigaki descended like a meteor, bearing Samehada over his shoulder. The shapeless sword, wrapped in bandages that barely contained the shark-skin scales beneath, smashed into the street with brutal force.
CRASH!
The physical and chakra shockwave pulverized the ground, disorienting half the squad.
"Kukuku... what an entertaining festival the Tsuchikage has put together," Kisame chuckled, tearing away Samehada's wraps to reveal the scaled skin and chakra-hungry mouth of the weapon.
Before the Iwa ninja could recover, a barrage of invisible chakra threads swept across the street at neck level. Malenia Chinoike appeared beside Kisame, wielding Hiramekarei, the twin sword. With a rapid surge of her blood-red chakra, Hiramekarei unleashed a concentrated wave of energy that took the shape of a giant hammer of light.
"Leave not a single one alive!" Malenia declared in an icy voice.
Kisame lunged forward, sweeping Samehada in devastating horizontal arcs. Every time the blade scraped an Iwa ninja, it devoured their chakra instantly, leaving them depleted before they could complete a hand seal. Malenia, coordinating with surgical precision, used Hiramekarei's energy to crush the earth walls they attempted to raise.
In less than thirty seconds, the group of fifteen infiltrators lay completely eliminated in the alley.
In the northern sector of the village, near the communications towers, another enemy contingent attempted to seize the messenger posts.
Baki advanced at a brisk pace across the rooftops. His eyes gleamed with the distinct light of his activated Byakugan, the veins around his temples bulging from the perceptual strain.
"I have three more squads in the warehouse sector," Baki reported grimly, holding Nuibari—the long, thin needle trailing an indestructible steel thread—in his right hand. "They are attempting to sever the main supply grid."
Beside him, Genta ran with feral ferocity, wielding Kiba, the twin lightning blades. Sparks of blue and white electricity crackled between the blades, sounding like the shrieks of a thousand birds.
"Leave them to me!" Genta yelled.
Genta leapt from the rooftop into the center of the enemy formation. Crossing the blades of Kiba over his chest, he spun like an electric tornado.
"Lightning Release: Lightning Tornado!"
A storm of electrical discharges rained down on the Iwa ninja. The stone shields they raised cracked instantly against the nature of Lightning Release. The electricity surged through their defenses, paralyzing their muscles on the spot.
Taking advantage of the collective paralysis, Baki descended like a silent ghost. With precise, flawless swordsmanship, he began skewering the enemies one by one with Nuibari. The steel thread of the sword pierced their bodies in sequence, sewing five ninja together in a single lethal line before Baki yanked the wire, severing their chakra pathways and ending their lives instantly.
"Northern sector clear," Baki muttered, momentarily deactivating his Byakugan to wipe the blood from the needle. "Let's push toward the main breach."
In the western district, the slaughter was no less intense.
Kaito advanced with slow, implacable steps, carrying Kabutowari—the blunt sword composed of a massive axe and an interconnected iron hammer—over his right shoulder. Beside him, Yura masterfully wielded Kubikiribōchō, the executioner's blade already gleaming crimson with absorbed blood, regenerating the minor nicks in its steel edge.
A heavy Iwa squad, composed of burly ninja specialized in stone armor, attempted to hold an intersection.
"Hold the line! It's just two of them!" the Iwa officer bellowed, raising a reinforced wall of rock.
"Two?" a voice called out from the roof above.
Yaoki swooped down, holding Shibuki, the explosive sword. The large scroll filled with explosive tags attached to the blade unrolled in midair with a sinister hiss.
"Taste this!" Yaoki shouted.
Yaoki struck the stone wall directly with the flat edge of Shibuki.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
A chain reaction of ten explosions detonated simultaneously at the point of impact. The rock wall was atomized into fine debris, and the blast wave shattered the heavy Iwa formation, throwing soldiers into the air with severe burns.
Before the survivors touched the ground, Kaito stepped forward. He set the axe edge of Kabutowari against the fallen officer's shield and slammed the heavy hammer onto the back of the axe head.
CRACK!
The impact crushed the earth armor and the ground beneath it like an eggshell.
Yura completed the cleanup with a sweeping arc of Kubikiribōchō. The giant sword cleaved through the last invaders in the sector with a fluid motion, absorbing the iron from their blood to maintain its razor-sharp edge.
The Seven Espadas of the Sand had cleared the inner perimeter within minutes, proving why Sunagakure had become an impregnable fortress under Daigo's rule. The Iwagakure invasion was being met with systematic, professional brutality.
However, the true horror of war was only just beginning to reveal itself.
As Yaoki caught his breath atop the remains of the destroyed barricade, adjusting Shibuki's scroll on his back, an unnatural, freezing breeze cut through the sweltering desert air. The smell of sand and blood was instantly replaced by a heavy stench of iron, decay, and death.
Kaito and Yura froze in place, feeling the hair on their arms stand up from a primal survival instinct.
"Yaoki... move!" Kaito screamed in desperation.
Yaoki's eyes widened as he tried to twist his body around.
He was too late.
A flash of cold steel cut through the air from the shadow of an adjacent alley. Without a sound, without a whisper of chakra to betray the movement, the blade of a dark katana thrust through Yaoki's back, piercing cleanly through his tactical vest, puncturing his ribs, and bursting out the center of his chest.
The tip of the blade dripped crimson blood onto the dirt.
Yaoki choked out a dry gasp. The light in his eyes rapidly began to fade as a thread of blood ran down the corner of his lips. The explosive sword, Shibuki, slipped from his paralyzed fingers and hit the ground with a dull thud.
The figure behind him withdrew the sword with cruel slowness, letting Yaoki's lifeless body collapse forward onto the dust.
Kaito, Yura, Baki, Kisame, Malenia, and Genta regrouped in a fraction of a second, forming a defensive ring around their fallen comrade. Their eyes flared with murderous fury, but also extreme caution.
From the shadows of the alley, five figures stepped forward in synchronized, measured strides.
They wore long, high-collared black cloaks adorned with red clouds outlined in white that seemed to float across the fabric. The desert breeze whipped the hems of their coats, revealing the rings worn on their fingers.
To the left walked Orochimaru, his pale skin, yellow snake eyes, and twisted smirk betraying his amusement at the scene. Beside him, Kakuzu kept his pupil-less green eyes locked on the weapons of those present, calculating the bounty on their heads. Hidan walked while swinging his three-bladed scythe over his shoulder, snickering with unhinged malice. Beside them stepped Banatel and Arangi, whose mere presence emanated a palpable threat.
And in the center of the group, leading the march with a presence that seemed to freeze the space around him, walked Pain.
The eyes of Akatsuki's leader—dark and formed by concentric gray circles revealing the legendary Rinnegan—fixed their gaze upon the Seven Espadas of the Sand and upon the village that was beginning to burn under the desert sky.
The great invasion of Sunagakure had begun, and the true bloodshed is about to come
