Chapter 88: Sensory Saturation

  • Next Chapter

Pain arranged every defense around Tonbo's threatened technique. The Deva Path prepared Shinra Tensei. Preta opened the seal that absorbed chakra. The winged hound placed itself between Tonbo and the Paths, while Naraka remained ready to restore whatever survived. Asura's skull opened around a concentrated beam.

Human watched through the shared Rinnegan.

"Here it comes. Bringer-of-Darkness."

Asura fired first. The beam crossed the distance before Tonbo completed his seals. It struck him through the abdomen, removing most of his torso in a burst of heat. Only strips of flesh held the upper and lower body together.

At the same instant, darkness spread across the sky. Bringer-of-Darkness covered five Paths and both summons. The Deva Path repelled the invading chakra for an instant, but the genjutsu returned during Shinra Tensei's interval. Preta alone maintained clear vision by continuously absorbing the technique.

That was enough for shared sight. Preta watched Tonbo's woven hawk collapse into an ordinary figurine. The ruined body fell after it, bandages streaming from the head. Pain guided the giant bird beneath the corpse and caught it before it vanished into the forest.

"Konoha produced an unusual shinobi," the Deva Path said.

The corpse smiled.

Every instinct Nagato possessed warned him at once.

"Sensory Saturation. Seal."

The bandages unraveled into lines of pale light. A translucent sphere closed around the Six Paths and their summons, with a radius of twenty meters but dense with layered formulae.

Pain tried to use Shinra Tensei and the Preta Path's absorption to break the trap. He was too late.

Information flooded the shared network. Every drop of rain became a separate impact requiring attention. Light divided into colors, edges, distances, reflections, and motion. Sound arrived without hierarchy: cloth moving against skin, mechanisms inside Asura, air crossing each Path's ears, and thunder kilometers away. Touch reported temperature, pressure, texture, balance, and pain from every body at once.

The sphere did not deprive Nagato of perception. It denied him the ability to discard anything.

All six Paths stopped. The summons hung motionless within the barrier, wings no longer responding coherently. Seeing everything became indistinguishable from seeing nothing; feeling everything prevented any single sensation from guiding action.

Below the sphere, the real Tonbo stood upon another woven construct.

His hair moved freely around a face no longer covered by bandages. The body Asura destroyed had been a Living Weave duplicate, activated during the instant Bringer-of-Darkness disrupted Pain's vision. Tonbo's bandages had served as the anchors for the final containment seal.

Sensory Saturation combined sealing techniques, genjutsu that distorted all five senses, and Psycho Mind Transmission to force continuously looping information into the mind. The technique required extensive preparation and a target willing to enter the trapped space.

Tonbo's theatrical bluff had created that willingness.

Once caught, a victim faced something worse than Melancholy. Tonbo could imagine an exception for a Ten-Tails jinchūriki, with mastery of Yin and Yang and immunity to ordinary ninjutsu. Short of that, he doubted anyone could free themselves. Of course, if the target never entered the trap, his confidence would be worthless.

Tonbo had no intention of staying.

His chakra had fallen near one tenth. If another Akatsuki member appeared, even an ordinary prolonged fight could kill him.

"Time to go home."

He turned toward the Land of Fire and accelerated away.

Zetsu emerged from the ground after Tonbo passed beyond sight. The black-and-white face studied the luminous sphere and the six bodies suspended inside it.

Pain, bearer of the Rinnegan, had been neutralized by preparation, misdirection, and an unfamiliar sealing technique. Konoha's Analysis Team leader was no longer a peripheral officer. He was a variable capable of interfering with the plan itself.

At the second battlefield, wind-enhanced Fūma shuriken cut through a wall of wooden stakes.

Murakumo's ink snakes spread along every branch around the masked man. Murakumo hoped to trap him long enough to give Togekei an opening.

Space twisted. The masked man vanished from the center of the formation and appeared behind Murakumo with one hand extended.

Borrowed Instinct warned Togekei before conscious perception did. A wind-coated kunai passed beside Murakumo's cheek and entered the space where the mask had begun to solidify.

The attacker abandoned contact and phased through the blade.

Murakumo escaped across three branches.

"He moves through space within a limited range," Togekei said. Words helped Murakumo and forced his own borrowed thoughts into an order his body could follow. "Attacks pass through while he is displaced. He must become tangible to touch us. That interval is our only opening."

Murakumo understood. As a Root assassin, he had survived by turning narrow openings into lethal ones. "Then I will make him choose between contact and defense."

Wood Release—the First Hokage's technique. Murakumo felt a chill. Could the masked man be one of Orochimaru's new experimental subjects? With better intelligence, perhaps Iwao would still be alive.

The masked man studied Togekei. The techniques had not changed, but the tactics and experience had improved beyond recognition—more dramatically than when Madara had taught him. The boy had deciphered his ability as quickly as his dead teacher might have done. Even the Sharingan met resistance now; a strange chakra in Togekei's mental space interfered with its genjutsu. He would have to wear him down. Whatever his experience, the boy's chakra was limited.

"Annoying," the lighter voice within the spiral said. "More people are coming."

The masked man sensed the approaching Root force. More than a dozen shinobi were close enough to turn a difficult capture into an unnecessary battle. He looked once at Togekei, committing the face and the borrowed chakra pattern to memory.

Space folded around him.

He disappeared.

Sensing the approaching reinforcements, Togekei released Borrowed Instinct.

The borrowed certainty vanished. Dizziness swept through his head.

Murakumo caught his shoulder before he fell farther.
