Chapter 204: The Missing Name
Gaara entered Konoha between his siblings.
Izumo watched the Sand team leave the gate and exhaled only after the red-haired boy had passed beyond easy hearing.
"That one has killed before."
Kotetsu nodded. "And he doesn't look much older than Neji. I wonder which of them would win."
The pressure surrounding Gaara was impossible to miss. Sand moved at his feet without wind, and the gourd upon his back carried more chakra than an ordinary genin should have controlled. Tonbo followed the three with his senses until they entered the route assigned to foreign teams.
"If the examination needs a stronger demonstration," he said, "I could always enter the arena as an examiner. The daimyō came to see what Konoha can do."
Izumo laughed. "That is exactly why Lord Hiruzen kept you away from the chief examiner's seat. If an older jōnin has to perform, the visitors will think our young shinobi have nothing worth watching."
Tonbo accepted the point. He was an employee, not a man searching for extra trouble. Once the Fourth Shinobi World War had passed, he intended to leave Konoha's front line and live quietly. Perhaps he would teach. Strength mattered because it gave him the right to choose that life.
The Sand delegation continued toward its lodge. The Kazekage had not arrived with them. He might come with the dignitaries before the finals, or Orochimaru might have found less freedom in Suna than Tonbo remembered. Either explanation could wait.
An ANBU landed beside the gatehouse.
"Tonbo-sama. High-level meeting in the Tower."
Tonbo handed his station to Izumo and vanished with the messenger.
The conference room was already crowded when he arrived. Hiruzen sat at the head of the table with Koharu, Homura, department leaders, barrier officers, ANBU captains, and the jōnin responsible for genin teams.
The first subject was defense. Foreign shinobi filled Konoha, important sites needed additional guards, and the Military Police had to keep ordinary disputes from becoming incidents between villages. Patrols, barrier routes, and reserve teams were assigned across the map.
The examination brought more than candidates. Merchants, retainers, and nobles had begun arriving with the first delegations, while shinobi used the crowds to measure Konoha's gates and response times. Barrier teams received overlapping watches around the Tower, the archive buildings, and the compounds that held restricted techniques. ANBU would cover the visiting daimyō once they arrived. Ordinary patrols were told to settle quarrels quickly without giving foreign teams an excuse to test village defenses.
Tonbo reviewed the deployment through Analysis. A few routes left important junctions uncovered when shifts changed; he pointed them out, and the officers adjusted the reserve teams. The precautions could discourage opportunists. They could not stop a planned invasion by people who already knew Konoha's routines, but saying that without proof would only reveal knowledge he could not explain.
Then Hiruzen turned to the candidates.
"Which of your subordinates are ready for the Chūnin Examination?"
Guy raised his hand at once. "Rock Lee, Hyūga Neji, and Tenten. All three possess the strength and spirit to advance."
Other jōnin followed with their own names. Konoha had more capable genin than the handful who drew attention in the Academy. Some had no famous clan and no instructor inclined toward speeches; their missions still justified a chance.
Matsukaze Tenma, Shindō Takuto, and Tsurugi Kyōsuke were among those nominated. Kabuto's squad would register again as well. Their presence reminded Tonbo how misleading the public image of a genin could be. Some failed because they lacked strength. Others possessed useful skills but could not lead, judge danger, or keep teammates alive under pressure. The examination was supposed to distinguish those qualities rather than reward a spectacular technique.
Kakashi recommended Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura. Asuma named Ino, Shikamaru, and Chōji. Kurenai put forward Kiba, Shino, and Hinata.
Guy frowned. "They graduated only recently. A joint examination is more dangerous than an ordinary mission."
Iruka agreed. "Their strength has grown, but experience cannot be rushed. Waiting until next year would not shame them."
His objection lacked the force it once might have carried. Iruka had watched Naruto's control improve and had heard enough about Tonbo's training to know that the rookie teams were no longer ordinary Academy graduates. Battlefield Simulation had exposed them to ambushes, pursuit, exhaustion, and opponents designed from real combat records. That experience could not replace missions in the living world, but neither could it be dismissed as classroom practice.
"You haven't seen what they can do," Asuma said.
Kurenai rested one hand upon the table. "They are ready to be tested. That does not mean I expect all three to be promoted."
Kakashi looked as bored as ever. "Team Seven survived a C-rank mission that became something worse. They deserve the opportunity."
Hiruzen listened to the objections. He knew the rookie teams had improved, but less than a year had passed since their graduation.
"You must trust the judgment of the other jōnin," he told Guy. "Their students possess real ability. Still, the decision cannot be careless. The rookie teams will be tested before their registration is approved."
Guy remained uneasy, but that answer gave him no ground to object. Tonbo thought of the hundreds of battles those students had already experienced through Battlefield Simulation. They were short on real missions, not on contact with danger.
The distinction still mattered. Battlefield Simulation had strengthened their reactions, but the coming dangers would be real. Their instructors believed the training and recent missions had prepared them.
"I support their entry," Tonbo said with a laugh. "I hope they do not die."
The meeting moved through the last examination arrangements. Tonbo listened, offered corrections where Analysis had relevant information, and waited for the room to empty.
Then Heart Steel activated.
A sealed memory opened inside Inner Archive.
Kurama Yakumo.
Recognition returned like a missing piece dropped into place. Tonbo remembered the girl upon the hill, her paintings, her living genjutsu, the samples and memories he had collected for a future body, and the protection he had promised. He also realized that for several days he had not thought of her once.
He remembered individual conversations and the exact pressure of her chakra, yet his recent days contained no gap that felt suspicious. Each plan had rearranged itself around her absence. Time once reserved for the estate appeared to have been free from the beginning. Even the purpose behind several sealed samples had become vague whenever he looked away from them.
The absence had felt natural. That was the danger.
Heart Steel replayed the memory because its weekly interval had arrived. Without it, Yakumo's disappearance would have joined itself smoothly to every other assumption in his mind. He might have gone on believing the Kurama estate was only a place where he sometimes took his children to play.
That was more dangerous than simple forgetting. A missing memory normally left an absence a careful person could notice. Yakumo's technique supplied answers before the question formed. It made the altered history feel complete.
Tonbo examined the recovered memories for breaks. Yakumo had not merely hidden from sight. The world around her had accepted a different account of her existence.
He rose from the empty conference room.
The Chūnin Examination would begin within days, but Yakumo had vanished now. Whatever her genjutsu had done, delaying the investigation would give it more time to settle.
Tonbo left the Tower at once and headed for the Kurama estate.
