Chapter 189: The Uncanny Sentinel

Team Seven chased Tora through Konoha's main street.

The cat slipped between two stalls, crossed a roof, and escaped Naruto's hands for the third time.

"Over there! No, he got away again."

More than ten minutes passed before the three genin finally cornered him. Naruto carried Tora after Kakashi while the animal twisted in his arms.

"Why are we still doing missions like this? We are much stronger now."

Kakashi looked over the top of his orange book.

"Do not confuse combat training with the whole profession. Tonbo's simulation taught you to react when people attack. Missions also require tracking, patience, and completing an objective that refuses to behave dramatically."

Naruto continued complaining. Sasuke and Sakura shared enough of the feeling to remain silent.

Kakashi privately remembered their bell test. Without watching Tonbo's training, he might have underestimated them and lost both bells in the opening exchange. The simulation had given three inexperienced genin reactions he had learned only after war. If his own team had possessed that preparation years ago, perhaps Obito would have survived.

The thought did not make a cat mission beneath them. Tora changed direction without warning, used civilians as obstacles, and punished anyone who assumed strength could replace attention. Naruto had enough chakra to fill the street with clones and no way to do so without overturning stalls. Sasuke's speed meant little when the target passed beneath a cart he could not cut. Sakura's observation produced the capture their attacks did not.

Konohamaru, Moegi, and Udon appeared around the next corner.

"Big Brother Naruto!" Konohamaru said. "Your technique worked. I defeated my rival."

Naruto looked toward Sasuke before understanding that Konohamaru meant a jutsu, not the person Naruto considered his own rival.

"What does that have to do with me?"

"I used the transformation you taught me. I will defeat my rival, defeat Grandfather, and then defeat you so I can become Hokage."

"The Hokage seat is mine."

The argument continued while Kakashi, Sasuke, and Sakura wondered exactly which transformation Naruto had passed to an Academy child.

Elsewhere, Tenyu and Maki peered through the door of an adult bookstore.

The proprietor dozed behind the counter. Tenyu formed a seal.

"Genjutsu: Hundred-Year Slumber."

The man's eyes lost focus, and his head settled onto his folded arms.

The twins entered.

Konohamaru's humiliating transformation had defeated them by creating an image neither expected. They intended to answer by the same principle. Tonbo always said that a convincing genjutsu required observation, so they sought material capable of producing disgust and shock before an opponent could complete a release.

They found an illustrated volume cataloguing the strangest appearances reported across the Five Great Nations. The pictures mixed neglect, disease, theatrical alteration, animals, and deliberate fabrication. One figure crawled with vermin; another carried snakes beneath every opening in his clothes; a third combined mismatched halves into a face that seemed to move incorrectly.

The book was not intended as a manual for Academy genjutsu. Its publishers had gathered shocking images because adults paid to be frightened, repulsed, or fascinated by them. That was precisely why the twins believed it useful. An opponent prepared for a seductive transformation might still hesitate before an image that attacked the urge to look away.

Tenyu and Maki recoiled and kept reading.

"If Konohamaru can transform into something that stops us," Tenyu said, "we can make something that stops him."

Neither child considered what the proprietor might do if he awoke and found two Academy students studying the restricted shelves.

Tonbo knew nothing about the errand.

He had returned to medical texts while Naruto's path into active missions began. Contact Evolution was only the first stage of his central technique. The next stage required neural externalization.

Tonbo wanted pieces of his network to separate from his direct body without losing function. A nerve placed upon a kunai or shuriken could enter an enemy at contact, collect physical information, and return weaknesses through the remaining connection. It could also remain hidden as a contingency, much as a Flying Thunder God mark allowed Minato to preserve access to a place long after leaving it.

Ordinary nerves died when separated from circulation and control. Tonbo's experimental filaments needed to carry their own instructions, respond at a distance, and reconnect information without requiring him to guide every movement consciously.

He divided the problem into stages. First, a filament had to remain stable after leaving his body. Second, it had to recognize contact and enter a target. Third, it had to translate tissue, chakra, and movement into information Tonbo could receive. Finally, it had to stay concealed long enough to matter later.

Success would turn any ordinary weapon into more than a blade. A blocked shuriken could still plant the filament. A kunai pulled from a wound could leave the true technique behind. The enemy might believe the exchange ended while Tonbo continued learning from inside the body.

Konoha Hospital expanded its medical collection for him. As head of the Analysis Team, Tonbo gathered texts from Fire Country and abroad, comparing surgery, chakra pathways, sensory techniques, and the behavior of transplanted tissue.

Research did not consume every day. He monitored Team Seven, spent time with Ayame and the children, and continued creating techniques simply because he enjoyed using them. Months passed in that rhythm.

At the Academy, Tenyu finally faced Konohamaru again.

Iruka stood as referee. Maki watched from the edge of the practice area with the other students.

Tenyu completed the seals.

"Genjutsu: Uncanny Sentinel."

A giant rose behind him.

Its eyes writhed like snakes. Vermin moved across its body. Its face joined two incompatible halves, and its mouth ended before the lips met. The image combined everything the twins had found most difficult to keep looking at.

The Sentinel carried no special compulsion. It did not paralyze a chakra pathway or trap the mind in altered time. Its strength came from the ordinary delay between seeing something revolting and deciding to release an illusion. Against a classmate, that fraction of a second was enough.

The watching students recoiled. Even Iruka felt nausea before recognizing the structure as an ordinary visual genjutsu.

Konohamaru froze halfway through the seals for his own transformation.

Tenyu crossed the distance and placed a kunai at his throat.

"You lost."

"What is that disgusting thing? I had not used my best technique yet."

"It is a normal genjutsu, like the transformation you used on us. Release it next time."

Konohamaru knew the Academy release would have worked if surprise had not stopped him. That knowledge made the defeat more irritating.

He had expected Tenyu to answer his transformation with another joke or a copied disguise. Instead, months of secret practice had produced a technique designed around the exact reaction Konohamaru once exploited. Their rivalry had taught both sides to develop rather than merely repeat.

Iruka stepped between them.

"You will not cast that technique at school again. No one who saw it will be able to eat lunch."

Tenyu looked toward the ceiling in despair.

"We spent months developing it."

Iruka did not soften. The boy could already defeat most classmates with taijutsu and had chosen to imitate the one habit everyone criticized in Naruto.

Tonbo's genjutsu looked magnificent when he used it.

His son's made the entire class want to look away.
