Naruto: Starting by Reading Minds in Naruto
Chapter 151: Famous in Konoha
Tonbo spent the first week of his public assignment inside Konoha Hospital.
The location disappointed anyone imagining a dramatic pursuit. It suited the work. Analysis of Itachi's genjutsu required current neurology, chakra-pathway records, and specialists capable of distinguishing injury from theory. Tonbo reviewed medical texts, interviewed clinicians, and compared documented sensory disorders with effects produced under voluntary genjutsu studies.
He did not use Sasuke's condition as research material. The boy's chart remained restricted to his treatment team. Tonbo received only operational information approved for pursuit: Tsukuyomi could distort perceived time, inflict severe mental trauma, and leave physical chakra depletion without ordinary wounds. Anything beyond that belonged to Sasuke unless a guardian and physician authorized disclosure.
Tonbo's own long-term project grew through the study. Guided Insight, Psycho Mind Transmission, Living Weave, Atmospheric Guidance, and his new Sensory Lattice all manipulated relationships between information, chakra, and response. Combining them promised a technique capable of reading or influencing complex systems without relying upon ordinary senses. It also promised overload.
A brain could not accept every signal merely because a technique collected it. Tonbo designed filters before range. The current Sensory Lattice could spread through a piece of dead wood, identify fiber direction, moisture, fractures, and foreign material, then return only categories Tonbo had chosen in advance. Using the same method on living tissue would raise consent, pain, identity, and neurological risk. He prohibited it outside medical research protocols.
Progress came one boundary at a time.
The hospital library held three records especially relevant to filtering. One patient could feel touch but not locate it. Another perceived heat long after the source disappeared. A medic injured during the war recognized objects by use while failing to name them. None mapped neatly onto genjutsu, but each proved that sensation, classification, memory, and response were separable processes.
Tonbo discussed the cases without copying identifying details. A neurologist corrected his assumption that faster information necessarily produced faster action; overloaded attention could slow reaction even when sensory pathways remained intact. The correction changed the next Sensory Lattice design from increasing volume to prioritizing questions.
Public pursuit duty still required work. Tonbo reviewed reported sightings of Itachi, rejected six based on time or description, and forwarded one witness who had seen two Akatsuki robes near a border road. Analysis was pursuit even when it occurred behind a desk.
Across Konoha, his name traveled faster. Tenyu and Maki heard residents discuss their father while carrying a shopping list to Ichiraku. Both were nearly five, old enough to travel the approved market route together and young enough to enjoy correcting adults.
"Dad did not survive Dust Release," Tenyu told a vegetable seller.
"He also cannot cover the whole village with one barrier," Maki added.
The seller thanked them and asked what he could do.
"Read the correction sheet," they said together.
Maki ate a candied fruit while Tenyu considered whether Tonbo's attention could advertise the restaurant. A special menu named after the security review would sell well. Maki suggested a Tempest Bowl until Tenyu reminded her that the technique was not public.
Ayame rejected both ideas before they finished presenting them.
"We do not turn the memorial week into a promotion. If customers come because they saw your father, we serve them the same food and charge the same price."
Teuchi agreed. Reputation might bring a first visit. Only the broth could bring a second.
Tenyu calculated how many bowls a successful promotion might sell. Ayame made him calculate ingredients, labor, waiting space, waste, and customers turned away when the counter became crowded. Profit without capacity could reduce service and exhaust the family. The lesson ended his campaign more effectively than a simple refusal.
The children accepted the decision after Ayame let them design a small notice explaining that questions about village security belonged at the public information office, not the ramen counter. Sasuke heard Tonbo's name beside the Naka River.
Two shinobi discussed the pursuit analysis and assumed Captain Tonbo would eventually corner Itachi. Sasuke's hands tightened around a pebble. The promise of revenge planted by Tsukuyomi allowed no one else to take that role. At the same time, Sasuke knew Tonbo's figure had resisted his kunai. A jōnin who understood genjutsu might truly meet Itachi and die.
He threw the pebble hard enough to skip once and sink. Training should have occupied him. Instead, he had missed class and spent an hour imagining outcomes he could not control.
The figure remained in his bag. Sasuke had discovered the locator was limited and chosen to keep it, yet knowing Tonbo could receive a distress signal made the object feel connected to another person's judgment. He considered removing the seal and decided against it. A signal he controlled was different from being watched.
Naruto found him from the road above.
"You're skipping practice," Naruto called. "I trained all morning. At the next test, I'll catch you."
"Dead last."
The familiar insult required no explanation or sympathy. Sasuke looked back at the river and decided that if Naruto could continue after every humiliation in the village, he could return to training after one wasted morning.
"Impossible," he added and left.
Naruto watched him go. Iruka had told the class not to demand conversation from Sasuke, but doing nothing felt wrong. A challenge was the only offer Naruto could make without speaking about the clan. The new Military Police station opened under a leaf-shaped emblem.
Mixed patrols answered ordinary calls. Complaints entered an independent office. Recruitment examinations continued. The absence of the Uchiha from their former institution became less visible to everyone except Sasuke, who stopped before the unfamiliar crest and saw how quickly a village could make an empty position function again.
The station's preserved archive still displayed a smaller Uchiha crest inside the entrance with a record of the force's founding. This prevented institutional replacement from becoming historical erasure. Sasuke noticed it after the new emblem and hated that a respectful plaque could make him grateful for receiving what had already belonged to his clan.
Outside Konoha, Itachi received Akatsuki robes and a scratched forehead protector. Zetsu warned him that Tonbo supported the pursuit.
"He will not chase me for a public story," Itachi said.
"Pain considers him dangerous."
"So do I. That is why I know he will choose evidence over appearance."
Zetsu could not tell whether the judgment came from respect, intelligence, or confidence that Itachi understood Tonbo's limits. He delivered the next assignment instead: Itachi and Biwa Jūzō would assassinate a protected noble in the Land of Birds. Akatsuki undercut the great villages on price and used perfect completion to make small countries dependent upon its services.
Itachi accepted the file.
Biwa Jūzō asked whether Tonbo's pursuit role changed their route. Itachi answered that Konoha's public story should never be treated as the whole deployment. They would vary border crossings, avoid unnecessary contact, and assume the Analysis Team compared every sighting against travel time. Confidence did not justify leaving an obvious pattern.
Zetsu approved. Akatsuki needed Itachi's knowledge of Konoha, not merely his eyes. The Land of Birds contract would test whether his recent grief affected completion without forcing him immediately against former comrades.
Konoha had made him famous as a missing-nin. Tonbo had become famous as part of the answer. Both reputations concealed more than they revealed.
