Naruto: Starting by Reading Minds in Naruto
Chapter 142: An Unacceptable Bargain
"The Rinnegan is Konoha intelligence," Tonbo said. "You are a missing-nin asking an active jōnin to sell village secrets."
"I am offering an exchange, not demanding loyalty."
Orochimaru described what he could provide: research laboratories beyond Konoha's committees, rare biological material, techniques copied from villages and clans, and a method intended to transfer consciousness between bodies. He presented each item as access, never admitting how many lives had become raw material.
"You survived war," he said. "You have a wife, children, and work that may require decades. Fragile flesh is the limit beneath every ambition. I can remove it."
The offer would tempt anyone who feared leaving a family behind. That made it more manipulative, not less valuable. Tonbo did not dismiss the achievement merely because its creator was monstrous.
"Your method preserves a mind by taking another body. That is not the immortality I would choose for my children to inherit."
Orochimaru's pupils narrowed. He had not explained the cost.
"An inference?"
"A technique that requires secrecy, laboratories of this scale, and repeated human acquisition has a predictable price. If you had solved aging without victims, you would recruit allies by demonstrating it openly."
"Konoha would forbid it regardless."
"Then your complaint is with Konoha, not evidence that I should disclose Pain."
Orochimaru tried a different angle. He offered techniques from Konoha's restricted archive and knowledge of Yin–Yang interaction that might help Tonbo separate Yakumo from Ido. The mention of Yakumo proved his intelligence network reached deeper than mission notices. Tonbo allowed no reaction.
"Come back for trial," he said. "Submit the research, identify victims and facilities, and let the village decide what knowledge can be preserved."
Orochimaru laughed softly. "Hiruzen could not destroy my work when he had the chance. Do you believe he would judge it cleanly now?"
"No. I believe a flawed process with witnesses is safer than a private process where every disagreement becomes a specimen."
The forest remained quiet around them. Reinforcement cells had seen the distant road collapse and begun circling the quarry. Tonbo's marks counted fourteen signatures. His team continued south beyond immediate range. He had delayed long enough.
"This conversation ends here."
Orochimaru spread his hands. "You are not curious whether your genjutsu can hold me?"
"Curiosity is not authority."
Tonbo still moved first.
Body Flicker placed him inside the Sannin's reach. A woven blade crossed the neck while Buried Silence denied the body any sense that movement had begun. Orochimaru accepted the cut. His mouth opened and another intact body pulled itself free, skin wet and expression amused.
Return Mirror caught a genjutsu hidden in the new body's gaze and sent its direction backward. Both men released their techniques before the feedback completed. The exchange lasted less than a breath.
It established what each needed. Tonbo could disrupt a body but not prevent replacement without revealing stronger techniques and committing to pursuit. Orochimaru could test Tonbo's defenses but not obtain controlled access to his mind without accepting unknown reflection.
"Firm boundaries," Orochimaru said. "Hiruzen taught at least one student to keep them."
"Do not mistake refusal for a promise that I will ignore you."
"And do not die before deciding whether ethics matter more than results. Your work is becoming interesting."
Tonbo vanished toward his team. He did not attack the snake bodies left behind or try to follow Orochimaru through routes he could not map. A fight without a capture plan would spend lives to satisfy pride. The escort reached Konoha three days later.
The return route avoided known mercenary posts and changed direction twice after Tonbo's scouts detected watchers. Ki organized candidates into travel groups instead of allowing grief to dissolve discipline. Kento spent the first day on a stretcher and the second using a crutch under medical restriction. No one asked the children to decide their clan's political future while smoke from the estate still marked the northern horizon.
At the final checkpoint, Tsuyoshi's wound showed no systemic poisoning. Shikyō's surviving colonies had stabilized. Atsushi had slept in short rotations and surrendered navigation only after Tonbo ordered him to rest. The temporary team reached the village exhausted rather than miraculously untouched.
Fourteen Hagoromo survivors entered under protection: twelve candidates, Ki, and Kento. Three captured rogues entered separately under ANBU guard. Reports from the estate later confirmed that other civilians had reached distant exits, though the main fighting force and leadership had suffered catastrophic losses.
Hiruzen received the mission team before allowing ordinary debrief schedules.
"The contract is elevated to S-rank," he said after reviewing Tonbo's report and Kento's seal. "Payment will be secured while the Hagoromo accounts are verified. Protective custody remains temporary and subject to consent, except where immediate security requires separation."
Kento accepted guarded housing and insisted upon access to surviving clan members as they arrived. He did not offer allegiance while grief remained fresh. Hiruzen did not demand it.
Konoha assigned medics, legal clerks, and a liaison outside the Intelligence Division. The separation mattered: treatment could not depend upon cooperation in interrogation, and property claims could not be decided by the department assessing security risk. Kento noticed the structure and asked which rule prevented it from changing. Hiruzen gave him the appeal process in writing.
Tonbo reported Orochimaru through a restricted annex. He included the request for Rinnegan intelligence, the offer concerning body transfer, the mention of Yakumo, and the brief exchange. He did not exaggerate it into victory.
"You let him leave," Hiruzen said.
"I lacked a reliable capture method and had fourteen clients, three prisoners, and an injured teammate in motion. Pursuit would have abandoned the mission."
"Correct."
The simple approval carried relief. Hiruzen had once failed to stop Orochimaru because personal attachment stayed his hand. He would not punish another jōnin for choosing clients over a symbolic duel.
"He knows about Yakumo," Tonbo added.
Hiruzen's relief ended. He ordered a quiet review of access logs, visitors, and supply patterns around the Kurama compound, but refused a mass detention of staff. Orochimaru might have inferred the research from old medical connections. Treating every person with access as guilty would give him disruption even if he had no current spy.
Tonbo returned home before requesting research leave.
Tenyu and Maki met him at the door with questions about flight, wind, rich children, and whether Gaku had received enough meat. Ayame checked his face and hands before hugging him. He told her the mission had changed, that people had died, and that Orochimaru had approached him. He did not make danger disappear from their marriage by withholding its name.
The following morning, Naruto arrived with Chōji and the twins carrying Ayame's sealed broth to Iruka's apartment. Iruka welcomed them, accepted the delivery, and listened to Naruto's direct question.
"Who taught you Eightfold Flavor?"
"My former team captain developed it," Iruka said.
"Do you have a graduation photograph?"
Iruka studied the four children, recognized a planned investigation, and retrieved a framed picture instead of making them search. A younger Tonbo stood behind Iruka, Togekei, and Mibu with one hand on each student's shoulder. Naruto looked from the photograph to Tenyu and Maki. They tried to hide behind Iruka at the same time.
"You knew," Naruto said.
Chōji opened his snack packet with the quiet satisfaction of a strategist whose plan had worked.
