Chapter 637: Reusing the Kara Organization
"What a hassle. I wanted to get more information out of Isshiki, but who would have thought Kaguya had actually been keeping an eye on me? That really caught me off guard."
Kenichi scratched his head.
"But that’s fine. Now that Isshiki is dead, I don’t have to keep playing mind games with him while discussing one thing after another."
He paused.
"I wonder what Hagoromo is doing right now. Did learning how powerful the Otsutsuki Clan really is make him give up completely?"
Although Kenichi was somewhat curious about Kaguya’s current mental state, Isshiki was thoroughly dead now, so he could not be bothered worrying about anything else.
As for whether Isshiki still had another backup plan, Kenichi neither knew nor cared very much.
Even if Isshiki had prepared one, so what?
It had nothing to do with him for now.
If Isshiki could still arrange a way to resurrect himself under circumstances like these, Kenichi could only praise him and let him ascend to the throne of the Hokage Undying King.
Previously, that throne had belonged to his teacher, Orochimaru.
But now that Orochimaru was dead, he naturally could no longer remain the Undying King.
Kenichi shook his head and left the laboratory.
This place had once carried Isshiki’s ambitions, but with his death, all of them had vanished like bubbles.
In a way, it really was a pity.
Isshiki had been capable of enduring things ordinary people could never tolerate.
If not for his unusual circumstances and a measure of bad luck, he might have caused enormous trouble for this world in the future.
But now that he had died completely at Kaguya’s hands, everything about him had become almost a joke.
That was simply how the world worked.
The winner took everything and wrote history.
The loser faded into the dust of history, leaving little behind.
If Isshiki had won that battle long ago, then he would have been the one writing history.
His story might have become an inspiring tale of someone who endured humiliation for countless years before finally taking revenge.
But in the end, Isshiki could only be remembered as someone who had fallen victim to a rebellion by his intended sacrifice.
After returning to the laboratory, Kenichi found Amado conducting experiments.
Amado was currently focused on separating the genes obtained from Isshiki and Kaguya, preparing for Kenichi’s future attempt to further purify his own genetic makeup.
He was completely absorbed in his work, so Kenichi had no intention of disturbing him.
Instead, Kenichi walked to another section of the laboratory to check on the progress of the improved crop project.
He cared quite a bit about this research.
Agricultural development obviously did not depend entirely on better seeds, but there was no denying that improved crop varieties could greatly increase food production.
At the same time, Kenichi had also arranged for the production of pesticides and fertilizers.
Those tasks were relatively simple, however, so he had not bothered handling them personally.
Instead, he delegated them to specialized factories throughout the Shinobi World.
After all, the technological level of the Shinobi World was not actually that primitive.
The convenience of ninjutsu and chakra had caused technological development to follow a somewhat strange path, but electric lights, televisions, and other modern inventions already existed.
The result was a rather unusual era.
Some aspects of society were backward, while others were surprisingly modern.
It almost resembled a kind of cyberpunk world.
Now that the Shinobi World had entered a peaceful period, a technological explosion was practically inevitable.
According to intelligence Jiraiya had gathered, Isshiki himself seemed to have contributed to some of that development.
More accurately, Kara, the organization Isshiki had founded, had played a role.
That gave Kenichi an idea.
Isshiki’s motives had certainly never been pure.
But the organization he created was still rather interesting.
Perhaps there was a way to let Kara continue operating even after Isshiki’s death.
After all, while Isshiki himself had ulterior motives, many of the ordinary members of Kara were relatively simple and straightforward.
Kenichi thought about it for a while.
Perhaps Jiraiya and Amado could jointly lead the organization.
Of course, Jiraiya would first need to gather Kara’s remaining members.
Once that was done, Amado could later be introduced as its leader.
Amado was, after all, a genuine scientist.
His combat ability was decent, while his research capabilities were exceptional.
Kenichi would feel comfortable entrusting an organization focused on technological development to him.
The only question was whether Amado himself would agree.
Still, Kenichi did not think he would refuse.
After working with Amado for so long, Kenichi had already discovered something unusual about him.
Amado had a strong moral conscience.
In that sense, he was a rather unusual scientist.
Of course, when his daughter’s life was involved, Amado could abandon that morality completely.
But now that Kenichi had resurrected his daughter, he felt quite confident about Amado.
With that thought, Kenichi quickly left the laboratory.
Kara’s main base had already been annihilated by his bombardment.
However, judging from the way that base had been structured, Kenichi doubted Isshiki would ever have allowed ordinary Kara members to learn its real secrets.
Jiraiya, on the other hand, had once infiltrated Kara and successfully become one of its members.
He should know more about its other branches and members.
So Kenichi decided to find Jiraiya, discuss his plan with him, and see whether there was another way to gather Kara’s remaining personnel.
If they could successfully reorganize them, Kenichi could accelerate the scientific and technological development of the Shinobi World.
That was also extremely important.
Konoha itself appeared peaceful.
People continued living their ordinary lives day after day.
Most civilians had no idea that a battle deciding the fate of the entire world had recently taken place.
But that was exactly what Kenichi wanted to see.
He strolled through Konoha’s streets, watching the people around him.
He also noticed that the number of shinobi caravans arriving from other villages had clearly increased.
A faint smile appeared on Kenichi’s face.
Although most of these shinobi had ultimately not been needed during the battle against Isshiki, the crisis had at least broken down some of the barriers between the villages.
That was a good development.
At the very least, conflicts between shinobi would gradually decrease.
With fewer wars, the major villages could devote more resources and manpower to scientific research.
If that continued, the Shinobi World would eventually enter an era of rapid development in both science and ninjutsu.
That future was already foreseeable.
"That guy Jiraiya... he’s actually not outside the women’s bathhouse?"
Kenichi scratched his head in confusion.
In the past, finding Jiraiya had been simple.
Check a brothel.
Check some suspicious izakaya.
Or check outside a women’s bathhouse.
Jiraiya would usually be in one of those places.
But this time, Kenichi could not find him anywhere.
With no better option, he went to the Hokage Building and asked Minato.
When Kenichi entered the Hokage’s office, Minato was processing documents.
Mito and Koharu were also sitting inside.
The moment the two elders noticed Kenichi, they quickly stood and greeted him respectfully.
Kenichi gave them a brief nod before turning toward Minato.
"Where’s Jiraiya?"
Minato’s expression became slightly strange.
He coughed.
"Um... Master should be at Konoha Hospital right now."
There was something subtle about his expression.
Kenichi raised an eyebrow.
Konoha Hospital?
He turned and left immediately.
Although Minato’s expression had been strange, Kenichi could roughly guess why.
It was probably related to the reason Jiraiya was in the hospital.
That man really left Kenichi speechless sometimes.
Jiraiya obviously had feelings for Tsunade.
Yet the two of them were already old, and neither had clearly settled the matter between them.
Even Kenichi was starting to find it frustrating.
But when he reached Konoha Hospital, he suddenly heard a miserable scream.
The sound alone was enough to make someone shudder.
Kenichi followed it through the hospital until he reached a particular department.
Then he looked at the sign.
His expression became strange.
Proctology Department.
"Tsunade... you... ow! Ow, ow, ow!"
Jiraiya’s miserable screams came from inside.
Kenichi rubbed his face.
Of all hospital departments, proctology was a rather unique place.
In most departments, some patients would always try to cut in line.
Seeing a doctor took time, after all, and even if the hospital introduced a strict queuing system, there would inevitably be people trying to skip ahead.
But proctology was different.
Especially when it came to examinations and changing dressings.
Patients there tended to become remarkably polite.
Everyone quietly waited for their turn.
There was a very simple reason.
Some of those procedures could make even the toughest man shed tears and become extremely fragile.
The location being examined was simply too sensitive.
So people rarely fought over who got to go first.
At that moment, Jiraiya had somehow angered Tsunade badly enough to end up in this department.
Judging from the screams, he was suffering quite a bit.
Kenichi shook his head.
This was what happened when someone offended a doctor and then ended up in that doctor’s hands.
That feeling must be...
Jiraiya continued screaming for a full fifteen minutes.
Finally, the door opened.
Tsunade walked out with a cold expression.
When she saw Kenichi standing outside, her face became slightly awkward.
Still, she gave him a brief nod.
Kenichi responded with a friendly smile.
Tsunade then hurried away.
After she left, Kenichi walked into the room.
Jiraiya was still on the examination table in an Orz-like posture.
His face was covered in tears.
He looked utterly broken.
Kenichi’s mouth twitched.
Tsunade had been ruthless.
She had actually made Jiraiya cry.
Now Kenichi was genuinely curious about what exactly Tsunade had done to him, and more importantly, what Jiraiya had done to make her that angry.
When Jiraiya noticed Kenichi, he forced an awkward smile.
Then he slowly climbed down from the examination table and coughed.
"Kenichi, did you need something from me?"
His expression suddenly became extremely serious, as though nothing embarrassing had happened.
Kenichi smiled.
Naturally, he had come for something important.
He briefly explained the situation regarding Kara and described some of his plans for the organization’s future.
Jiraiya fell silent after hearing him out.
He looked at Kenichi strangely.
But Kenichi was still explaining the plan and did not notice.
As Jiraiya stared at him, his thoughts returned to something that had happened after his resurrection.
He had once returned to Mount Myoboku.
There, he met the Great Toad Sage after it awakened.
The Great Toad Sage told him that the future had changed.
Everything had become blurry.
Even it could no longer see what would happen clearly.
But there was one image it had seen before the future became obscured.
A person floating in the sky.
That person brought a world-destroying crisis upon the world.
And in the end, the figure simply disappeared.
The Great Toad Sage had not clearly seen the person’s face.
But it had seen something else.
The figure wore white clothing.
Something resembling a laboratory coat.
Jiraiya looked at Kenichi.
Kenichi was wearing a lab coat.
It was difficult not to make the connection.
Still, Jiraiya knew perfectly well that he could not deal with Kenichi now.
So he patiently listened.
But the more he heard, the more confused he became.
Kenichi was actively trying to promote peace throughout the world.
He wanted scientific progress.
He wanted fewer wars.
Would someone doing all of that truly become the person who brought about the destruction the Great Toad Sage had seen?
Jiraiya could not decide.
So he said nothing.
He would watch.
He would observe what Kenichi truly thought and what he actually did.
For the time being, Jiraiya agreed to the proposal.
He would go and gather Kara’s remaining members.
Kenichi watched Jiraiya leave, his expression thoughtful.
He had missed Jiraiya’s strange gaze earlier.
But near the end of their conversation, Kenichi had noticed it.
There was definitely something unusual about the way Jiraiya looked at him.
Kenichi did not believe Jiraiya had somehow independently discovered anything about his future.
That left only one likely explanation.
"That annoying old toad said something to him, didn’t it?"
Kenichi touched his chin.
It seemed the time had come to visit Mount Myoboku.
