Chapter 634: How to Mass-Produce Ninjas

"As expected, there really is no way to return to the distant past."

Kenichi operated the time machine in his hands and frowned slightly.

Still, this result was within his expectations. Isshiki had already warned him about the limitation.

Kenichi simply wanted to test it himself.

If he could truly return to the distant past, it would be extremely useful for his research on the chakra fruit.

Even obtaining a tiny genetic sample from the chakra fruit would have been enough.

Unfortunately, judging from the current situation, that was probably impossible.

Kenichi felt somewhat regretful.

He had not expected the time machine to possess so many restrictions.

But after thinking about it carefully, it made sense.

If there were no such limitations, the Otsutsuki Clan would probably have exploited time travel long ago.

Kenichi also suspected that the time machine had other restrictions that he still did not know about.

And Isshiki clearly had not told him everything.

"Isshiki definitely left some kind of contingency."

Kenichi rubbed his chin.

"The problem is that Kaguya doesn’t seem to know what it is either."

"That’s really troublesome."

"Kaguya knows far too little about the internal workings of the Otsutsuki Clan."

Then again, that was understandable.

Kaguya had originally been treated as a sacrifice.

The Otsutsuki Clan probably had no reason to teach her too many important secrets.

In that regard, they were surprisingly different from the current Hyuga Clan.

Kenichi climbed out of the ruins.

The more he learned about the Otsutsuki Clan, the more flaws he seemed to notice.

For such a powerful clan, if they were going to cultivate people specifically as sacrifices, why had they never developed something similar to the Hyuga Clan’s Caged Bird Seal?

Or perhaps they had simply been so accustomed to everything going according to plan that they never considered the possibility of rebellion.

Kenichi found the idea rather interesting.

Unfortunately, Kaguya knew too little about the clan’s internal affairs.

Isshiki, meanwhile, appeared willing to cooperate, but both sides clearly had their own hidden motives.

Trying to uncover the full truth under these circumstances was simply too difficult.

Kenichi did not dwell on it.

For now, strengthening himself was more important.

Once his own strength increased enough, these problems would become much easier to solve.

Regardless of how complicated the Otsutsuki Clan was, overwhelming strength could solve many things.

If Kenichi became powerful enough, perhaps one day he could even turn members of the Otsutsuki Clan into his experimental subjects.

With that thought, Kenichi quickly returned to the laboratory.

Just as he arrived back in Konoha, he spotted Amado eating with his daughter.

"Mr. Amado."

Kenichi walked over with a smile.

Amado looked up in slight surprise when he heard Kenichi’s voice.

He knew what Kenichi had gone out to do.

But seeing him return so quickly, while the world outside still remained peaceful, surprised him somewhat.

Amado quickly walked over.

He glanced back toward his daughter before lowering his voice.

"Kenichi, everything went smoothly over there, right?"

There was clear concern in his tone.

Amado was satisfied with his current life.

It was peaceful.

And that peace was exactly what he wanted.

Most importantly, it meant his daughter would no longer be in danger.

Kenichi nodded with a smile.

Although Isshiki clearly still had other intentions, Kenichi had already developed some theories about what they might be.

Considering Isshiki’s current condition, what could he possibly want more than resurrection?

Following that logic, Isshiki was probably focusing his attention on Kenichi.

Perhaps he intended to use Kenichi’s body as a vessel for his return.

That would explain why Isshiki had suddenly become so enthusiastic and cooperative.

Kenichi sneered inwardly.

Isshiki was scheming against him.

But Kenichi was scheming against Isshiki as well.

It was simply a matter of seeing who was better at it.

And in this particular game, Kenichi did not believe Isshiki had any chance of winning.

"That’s good."

Amado visibly relaxed.

"That’s good."

Kenichi smiled.

Then he pulled Amado aside and began discussing genetics with him.

Kenichi already had several ideas for improving his own genes.

But Amado had extensive experience in modifying and adjusting genetic structures, so Kenichi still valued his opinion.

Amado did not mind discussing the subject.

However, he had already told Kenichi most of what he knew, so it was difficult to provide many completely new ideas in such a short period.

Kenichi did not mind.

He enjoyed exchanging ideas with other researchers.

Sometimes, even an ordinary discussion could create an unexpected spark of inspiration.

That kind of exchange could reveal a completely new direction for his research.

Kenichi yawned.

Reaching the next stage of his research would not be easy.

It could even be described as extremely difficult.

Still, some of Amado’s ideas were genuinely interesting.

Just like what he was about to mention now.

"Kenichi."

Amado smiled.

"About the subject you mentioned, I actually have a new idea."

"Didn’t you leave Toneri in the laboratory for experiments?"

Kenichi looked at him.

"Yes."

"Well, during one of our tests, I discovered something unusual about Toneri."

Amado’s smile widened slightly.

"I think you’ll be very interested."

Kenichi paused.

Toneri?

Naturally, he remembered Toneri.

But because he had been busy dealing with Isshiki, Kenichi had not paid too much attention to Toneri’s recent experiments.

He had only occasionally received memories from his Shadow Clones and checked the general progress.

He had not expected something important to appear now.

But that immediately raised another question.

If something significant had happened, why had his Shadow Clone reported that everything was normal?

Logically, if the experiment had produced an important result, the Shadow Clone should have immediately dispelled itself and transmitted the memory back to him.

Yet that had not happened.

Kenichi carefully reviewed the memories he had already received from the Shadow Clone.

Nothing seemed wrong.

More precisely, there was no problem at all.

The Shadow Clone had not been affected by Toneri in any obvious way.

So what exactly had made Amado call the result interesting?

Kenichi resisted the urge to immediately dispel the clone.

Instead, he patiently waited for Amado to explain.

"I noticed an extremely subtle difference during one of Toneri’s earlier experiments."

Amado continued.

"The difference wasn’t in Toneri himself."

"It appeared in the surrounding environment."

Kenichi raised an eyebrow.

"I had a potted flower inside the laboratory."

"After the experiment, the flower mutated."

"The color of its petals changed."

Amado adjusted his glasses.

"I suspect the gene sequence Toneri was testing has the ability to influence the surrounding environment."

Kenichi relaxed slightly.

So neither Toneri nor his Shadow Clone had encountered a problem.

Still, what Amado described was extremely interesting.

A gene that could alter the surrounding environment?

That could be incredibly useful.

If the gene could trigger mutations in nearby organisms, then its potential value was enormous.

Of course, that kind of power would have limitations.

It was very different from direct combat strength.

But from a research perspective, Kenichi was immediately interested.

He quickly returned to the laboratory.

Amado did not follow him.

Kenichi knew Amado did not have much free time to begin with.

Letting him spend more time with his daughter was a good thing.

Kenichi soon reached the laboratory.

Toneri and several Shadow Clones were still working inside.

Kenichi smiled when he saw them.

Amado had already told him the approximate time when the unusual experiment had occurred.

That made things simple.

Kenichi only needed to compare the experimental timeline with the memories of his Shadow Clones and determine which gene sequence had been active at that moment.

After identifying it, Kenichi brought several additional plants into the laboratory and placed them near Toneri.

Then he instructed the Shadow Clone research team to perform the gene implantation again.

After the implantation was completed, Kenichi did not immediately tell the clones to stop controlling the gene.

Instead, he watched carefully.

Soon...

Changes appeared.

The petals of one flower gradually changed color.

Another flower suddenly began to wither.

A third plant started producing new buds.

And all of it happened extremely quickly.

Kenichi frowned in confusion.

Could a single gene sequence really possess so many functions?

"This gene seems capable of causing changes in the genes of nearby plants and animals."

One Shadow Clone studied the results.

"And it also seems to accelerate those changes."

The clone then looked cautiously toward Kenichi.

"But if that’s true, then wouldn’t your original body also be affected?"

Kenichi shook his head.

He did not feel any changes in himself.

He already had a theory as to why.

It was probably related to his current genetic makeup.

Otsutsuki metabolism was naturally extremely slow.

More importantly, this effect apparently could not significantly alter Otsutsuki genes.

Otherwise, if such a gene could randomly mutate Otsutsuki bodies, members of the clan would probably have transformed into all kinds of bizarre creatures long ago.

"If it has no effect on the original body, then its value doesn’t seem that high."

The Shadow Clone shook its head.

Kenichi looked at him strangely.

No value?

Quite the opposite.

This was excellent.

Extremely excellent.

So useful that Kenichi almost wanted to laugh.

In the past, he had attempted to improve crops through genetic research.

But it had been difficult.

Far too slow.

That was one of the reasons his idea of turning everyone in the world into a shinobi had never truly progressed.

But now...

This ability could change everything.

Kenichi might actually be able to fill the world with shinobi.

He immediately instructed the Shadow Clone to preserve the relevant genetic segment.

The next step would be to create another Toneri clone and program this special gene into it, allowing the clone to permanently possess this ability.

Then those Toneri clones could be used as biological screening machines.

They could rapidly induce large numbers of mutations in crops.

From those mutations, Kenichi could select varieties with higher yields and much faster maturation.

The probability of producing exactly what he wanted might be low.

But probability did not matter if the number of attempts became large enough.

Kenichi remembered the Infinite Monkey Theorem from his previous life.

The idea was simple.

If there were infinitely many monkeys and infinitely many typewriters, then given enough attempts, those monkeys could eventually produce one of Shakespeare’s works purely by chance.

The same logic applied here.

As long as Kenichi possessed enough Toneri clones, he would also possess enough experimental opportunities.

Then he could rapidly cultivate crops with vastly improved yields.

More food meant the world could support a larger population.

A larger population meant more potential shinobi.

And according to the same logic behind the Infinite Monkey Theorem, enough shinobi would eventually produce more geniuses.

More geniuses would accelerate the development of the entire world.

If Kenichi tried to carry the progress of the whole world by himself, it would be impossible.

But if he could create the conditions for enough geniuses to emerge and push civilization forward together...

Then perhaps the Shinobi World really could develop enough strength to confront the crises waiting in the future.

Kenichi became increasingly excited by the idea.

His Shadow Clones immediately understood what he wanted.

Without wasting time, the research team began preparing to mass-produce additional Toneri clones so they could create more experimental units.

Kenichi suddenly added one more instruction.

"When the clones are finished, don’t give them consciousness."

The Shadow Clones looked toward him.

"Make them unconscious biological machines."

"No independent thoughts."

"That way, we avoid unnecessary problems."

Kenichi had no interest in introducing preventable complications into the experiment.

If these clones developed consciousness and something went wrong later, dealing with the consequences would become extremely troublesome.

It was better to eliminate that risk from the beginning.
