Naruto: North and South
Chapter 254: The Price of Refusal
Even Nagato rarely lost control. But when Orochimaru finished speaking, he nearly went to war on the spot. Still, he couldn't. The people Kakashi had dragged back from the edge of death were still here, and they needed protection. So they set up camp. They rested. What else could they do?
The village was ruined beyond recognition. Even the downstream residential areas were reduced to rubble. Obito's house was nothing but debris scattered in the rain. It was all gone.
Itachi returned to what used to be his home, if you could even call it that anymore. Half the structure had collapsed. There was no sign of his cat, Kiki, not even a trace of chakra residue left behind. Itachi stood there for a long time. Silent. Disappointed.
At first, after learning the truth, he had clung to hope. Maybe the cat survived. No one would target a cat, right? But reality had no patience for hope. I've gotten soft, he thought bitterly. A good shinobi doesn't keep attachments. Especially not to cats. They weaken resolve.
And then came a more absurd realization. Maybe Akatsuki itself has been doing it wrong. A terrorist organization shouldn't feel like this. There should be no warmth. No shared meals. No casual games. No talking about peace like some peaceful family gathering. We're supposed to be dangerous. Not like this.
And now? The village was destroyed. And Kiki was gone. He wanted to cry. He didn't.
Sakura was still treating the wounded. He created a shadow clone and went to help her. Then I'll deal with Sasuke later. He betrayed us. He caused all of this. I'll fix it, somehow.
Deidara's home was slightly better. At least it still stood. Barely. He went up to the attic, carefully avoiding collapse, searching for old puppets he had stored there. When he finally reached the top, it was empty. Completely empty. Of course, he thought. Even broken puppets were treasures to other puppet users.
He climbed down slowly. And right as he reached the ground, the house collapsed behind him. Two years of shelter, gone in an instant. Deidara exhaled. "...Yeah. Let's go."
At least some homes had survived long enough for their owners to return. Others weren't so lucky. Kita and Konan's residence no longer existed at all. Only a massive crater remained, now filled with rainwater.
Konan used her foresight ability to reconstruct what happened. It was simple. Her junior apprentice had used a Wind Release: Rasenshuriken. A single strike. It destroyed everything. Even the elite squad, trained under Zaraki Kita, were wiped out instantly despite their dual-blade ghost style technique. No resistance. No survival. Just disappearance.
Later, they reached Amegakure's administrative building. Everything usable had been taken. Everything unusable had been destroyed. Even Konan's desk plant, a small succulent, had died after two years without water.
Then they reached Nagato's tower. Or what remained of it. Nothing. The sealing barriers were broken. The structure was gone.
Nagato didn't move the rubble with jutsu. He didn't call anyone. He used his own hands. Piece by piece. Steel. Concrete. Broken architecture. He dug through everything. He found discarded chakra receivers, soaked paper infused with Konan's chakra, a broken cup, a game controller he had secretly bought. None of it mattered. He was looking for only one thing. Kiki. Just a fragment. A strand of hair. Anything. But there was nothing.
He searched again. And again. And again. Rain fell harder. It blurred his vision, though not enough to hide the truth.
Nagato sat on the ruins. Hands over his face. Konan and Zaraki Kita approached.
"Did you find it?" Konan asked softly. Her voice was quieter than the rain.
Nagato didn't answer immediately. When he finally did, it was almost inaudible. "...No."
The tower had never been just a tower. It wasn't a weapon facility. It wasn't a command center. It was a place of preservation. Inside, hidden deep in cold storage, was a body. Preserved. Protected. The only thing Nagato had ever truly tried to save. The only thing that had ever mattered.
Konan had the foresight ability. Nagato didn't want her to use it. Neither of them did.
Nagato finally spoke again, voice breaking. "...Do you remember, when we first met Shibai? He said I would regret everything. Was he already seeing this future?"
Konan didn't answer. Because there was no answer. They had lost more than just Yahiko. They had lost tens of thousands across Amegakure. All because of Akatsuki.
Konan placed a hand on Nagato's shoulder. He was shaking. Barely. Silently.
Yahiko once said, "I want to change this country." But now only ruins remained.
Konan sat beside him. As always. "Nagato," she asked softly. "Do you regret it?"
"...I regret it," he said immediately.
Konan shook her head. "You're lying." Her voice was gentle. "You would still choose it again. Because that's who you are." She continued softly, "Yahiko's dream was this country. Your dream is the world. So whether you knew the outcome or not, you would still move forward."
Nagato trembled. "What did we even gain?" he whispered. "Your sight, the destroyed village, everything, even Yahiko. I'm an idiot. Why didn't you stop me, Konan?"
Zaraki Kita saw it clearly. Those were tears. Not rain.
Konan didn't wipe them away. She didn't comfort him. She simply held his hand. And said, "...At least we are still us."
For Zaraki Kita, that was enough.
The world of shinobi. No. The world of humans. Was a world of compromise. People were born into it. Then slowly learned to give things up. Bit by bit. Until nothing remained.
Even war was not just fighting enemies. It was fighting invisible things: fate, systems, inevitability, despair. And in the end, people either surrendered, or became part of the system that destroyed them.
But not everyone surrendered. Zaraki Kita refused. Konan refused. Nagato refused. Akatsuki refused. Kakashi refused. Even when it cost everything. And that refusal made the world both beautiful and unbearable.
Nagato suddenly broke. He cried out loudly in the rain. "...But the price...! Konan... Kita... The price is too high..."
And for once, the leader who once believed he could become a god cried like a man who had lost everything.
