Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri
Chapter 491 - 387 : Not First, Not Here!!
Kagetsu’s mouth was already open when the Chapter started — the whole corridor still holding its breath from the moment Ch. 386 had ended on, nobody having moved, nobody having dared to.
The voice that came out of Kagetsu’s mouth didn’t belong to him.
Not the way the third fragment’s voice hadn’t belonged to him. Not the way the older Kagetsu’s voice, borrowed through the same channel, had never quite been his either.
This one was quieter than all of them.
Older than the older Kagetsu. Calmer than the mark. Steadier than a fifteen-year-old boy standing in a corridor with four signatures and a stranger occupying the same body had any right to sound.
---
"I know what you are," Kagetsu said. To the hollow. To the second signature waiting inside it.
Not a question.
[Divergent Expression — Voiceprint Analysis]
Speaker: Kagetsu (confirmed — vocal cords, not borrowed channel)
Cadence Match: 0% to any previously logged voice, INCLUDING base Kagetsu
Emotional Read: not fear. Not confusion. Recognition.
"That’s not possible," Danzo said, flat, reading the notification over Hiruzen’s shoulder. "Recognition requires prior contact. There’s been no prior contact. Divergent Expression logged this signature for the first time tonight."
"Maybe not for him," Orochimaru said quietly.
Danzo looked at him sharply. "You’ve suspected something," he said. Not a question either — the second one in as many minutes.
"I’ve suspected a lot of things about him since the day I met him," Orochimaru said, and didn’t elaborate further, and Danzo, for once, didn’t press. It wasn’t like him to let a thread go unpulled. Tonight, apparently, was already too full of threads for one more.
---
"You do," the second signature said. Something in its tone had shifted — not surprise, exactly. Relief, worn the same careful way the third fragment’s had been in Ch. 385. "I wasn’t sure you would. Sixteen years is a long time to keep something that quiet, even from yourself."
"I didn’t keep it quiet," Kagetsu said, in the new voice, even and unhurried. "I didn’t know how to say it. There’s a difference, and nobody in this corridor has had to learn it the way I did either."
The line landed like a small, deliberate echo of what the second signature had told the figure two Chapters ago.
Kushina caught it. Her chains, still slack, didn’t move.
---
"Kagetsu." Hiruzen’s voice again, careful the way it had been all Chapter. "Say it plainly. What is it."
Kagetsu was quiet for a long moment. Long enough that Kushina’s hand drifted, unconsciously, toward the chains at her side, though she didn’t raise them.
When he spoke again, it was still the new voice — but slower now, weighing each word before he let it out.
"This body isn’t where I started," he said. "It’s where I ended up."
---
Nobody moved.
"Ended up from where," Minato said.
"I don’t have a word that means anything out here," Kagetsu said — the second signature’s own phrase, spoken back with his own mouth, deliberate. "I have one that only means something in there. In the hollow. Where it’s been waiting."
"He’s telling you the truth," the second signature said. "He’s just not telling you all of it. That part isn’t mine to give either — same as the shape wasn’t Obito’s to give Kushina’s mother’s name. Some things you don’t hand over on someone else’s behalf."
Minato’s kunai, lowered since Ch. 386, stayed down, but his eyes hadn’t left Kagetsu since the new voice first spoke. "That’s twice now," he said. "The figure’s crack, Obito’s excuse, and now this. Everybody in this corridor keeps citing the same rule about whose story belongs to who. I’d like to know who taught it to all of you first."
Nobody answered him. It wasn’t the kind of silence that meant no one knew.
It was the kind that meant too many of them did.
---
[Divergent Expression — Correlation Update]
Kagetsu (current voice) ←→ Second Signature: 94%, rising
Kagetsu (current voice) ←→ base Kagetsu (Ch. 384 baseline): 61%, falling
Classification: not possession. Not a fifth signature. A surfacing.
"It’s not new," Hiruzen said slowly, reading it. "It’s not competing with him for space, the way the others were. It’s — "
"It’s older than the rest of him," Danzo finished. "By his own read. Sixty-one percent falling against his own baseline, in real time, while he’s standing there talking to us."
Hiruzen looked at Kagetsu the way he hadn’t looked at him since the boy’s arrival back in Ch. 367 — not with suspicion, but with the specific caution of a man recalculating how much of someone he actually knew. "How long," he said. "Not the hollow. Not the mark. You. How long have you known there was more to you than what you’ve shown us."
Kagetsu, still in the new voice, didn’t answer that either.
---
The figure had gone very still, facial crack dark and unpulsing.
"I think I understand now," it said. "Why the hollow was built for two. Not the third fragment and the second signature. You and it." It looked at Kagetsu directly. "You’ve never actually been only one thing since before any of us met you. We just never had a number that could see it."
"Neither did I, for most of it," Kagetsu said, still in the new voice. "Sixteen years of a room I thought was empty. Turns out I was just standing in the wrong part of it."
The figure’s crack pulsed once, gently, as if in recognition rather than fear — the first time all arc it had reacted to someone else’s revelation as kinship rather than alarm. "I spent this whole crisis thinking I was the only thing here that had been carrying something it didn’t ask for," it said. "I don’t know if it’s better or worse, knowing that isn’t true."
"Worse," Kushina said quietly. "It’s always worse. It just means there’s more of us who needed someone to ask."
---
Orochimaru’s hand tightened on his shoulder — the same grip, the same patience, though something in his face had changed since Ch. 386. Less protective now. More like a man bracing to hear something he suspected but had never let himself confirm.
"Say the rest," Orochimaru said. Quiet. Not a demand. An offer.
He’d asked Kagetsu for plenty over six Chapters — verification, mechanism, honesty under pressure. This was the first time the asking had cost him something visible before Kagetsu had even answered.
Kagetsu opened his mouth again.
"Wait," the second signature said, sharp for the first time.
---
Uzuki’s signature spiked.
Not the involuntary flicker from Ch. 385. Not the confirmed-recognition read from Ch. 386.
A full, sustained climb — 23% to 31% in under two seconds, still climbing, no longer holding steady the way it had since Ch. 384.
Kagetsu staggered — the first physical sign of instability since the scar had opened, two Chapters of nothing but calm suddenly interrupted. Orochimaru caught him before he’d fully registered falling, the same reflex that had caught him half a dozen times this crisis, except this time there was finally something to catch.
[Divergent Expression — Signature Scan, urgent]
Uzuki: 31%, climbing, unstable
Third Fragment: 5%, holding
Second Signature: 34%, unchanged
Base Kagetsu (current voice): 61%, falling
Confidence: none. First simultaneous multi-signature destabilization since Ch. 384’s original activation.
---
"It’s not settled," Kushina said, chains snapping fully taut for the first time since the hollow opened. "It was never settled — it’s been sitting there since Ch. 384 waiting for something."
"Waiting for what," Minato said, kunai already rising.
"For him to say it out loud," the second signature said, and for the first time all Chapter it sounded less patient than afraid. "I told you to wait. I meant it. Whatever’s happening to Uzuki right now — it’s happening because he almost finished that sentence, not because of anything I did."
---
Kagetsu’s own voice broke through — his real one, cracking through the calm cadence of whatever had been speaking through him a second ago, like a hand grabbing the wheel back mid-turn.
"I didn’t say anything," he got out. "I didn’t even finish — "
"You didn’t have to finish," the newcomer said, stepping forward for the first time since the hollow opened, composure fully gone. "Uzuki isn’t reacting to what you said. It’s reacting to what you are. It’s been carrying a piece meant to complete it since the moment it arrived, and I think — "
The newcomer stopped.
Danzo pressed immediately, no patience left for a sentence trailing off unfinished. "You think what. Finish it."
"I think I told you the wrong thing was completing it, back in Ch. 383," the newcomer said. "I said the third fragment. I never accounted for there being two things inside him worth finishing something with. I don’t know which one Uzuki actually needs. I don’t think Uzuki knows either."
Uzuki’s signature hit 40%.
Something behind Kagetsu’s ribs, in the space right beside the settled third fragment, began, very quietly, to glow.
Nobody in the corridor moved to stop it. Nobody yet knew what stopping it would even look like.
