Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri
Chapter 486 - 382 : A Third Name!!
Kagetsu’s mouth moved.
He felt it happen the way a person feels their own hand move in a dream — technically theirs, technically obeying, and utterly disconnected from anything he was choosing.
"—not him," his own voice said, rough, wrong in the vowels, like someone speaking a language they’d learned from listening rather than living it. "Tell them. Not him."
Orochimaru’s arms went rigid around him. "Not who."
"Not the old one," Kagetsu’s mouth said, and the older-Kagetsu voice — the real one, the one that had lived inside him since Chapter 375 — went dead silent for the first time since the merger, like it, too, was listening instead of speaking. "He’s not what’s being pulled. I am."
[Talent Card: Divergent Expression]
Signature source: INTERNAL, using host vocal apparatus
Correlation to Nara Kagetsu (base): 12%
Correlation to older-Kagetsu-fragment: 6%
Correlation to half-formed construct (seventeenth bloom): 88%
FLAG: This is not a voice speaking through Kagetsu. This is the piece the construct is pulling, speaking on its own behalf before it leaves.
Kushina’s chains dropped an inch, stunned. "There’s a third one in there."
"There’s always been a third one," the voice said, and something about the cadence steadied, settled, like it was relieved to finally be heard clearly. "I’m not new. I’m just the part of you that was never given a name, because nobody thought a fragment needed one before it was even whole."
Danzo’s voice cut through the shock before anyone else recovered enough to speak. "Divergent Expression just gave us the closest thing to a number we’ve had all arc. Eighty-eight percent correlation to the construct pulling him. That’s not ambiguous. Somebody explain to me how a fragment nobody’s ever mentioned gets that specific a match on the first read."
"Because it’s not a guess," Hiruzen said slowly, still kneeling, still not moving his hand from Kagetsu’s chest. "It’s not reading a resemblance. It’s reading the same thing twice."
*
The newcomer went very still.
"That’s not possible," it said, and for the second time this Chapter its composure cracked instead of merely bending. "The four constructs were finished. Cut, whole, released. There isn’t a fifth fragment left inside any of them — I would have known. I am what they were cut from."
"You know what you gave away," the voice said, patient in a way that made Kagetsu’s own patience feel borrowed. "You don’t know what was kept back. Not everything cut loose left cleanly. Some of it stayed attached to the host by a thread too thin for you to notice losing."
Hiruzen’s hand hadn’t left Kagetsu’s chest. "Attached since when."
"Since he was born," the voice said. "Not since the mark activated. Not since the door cracked. Since the day Nara Kagetsu existed as a person at all, there’s been a version of him carrying something the wall-seal was only ever the visible half of."
Orochimaru’s grip on Kagetsu didn’t loosen, but something in his face did — the careful control of a man recalculating everything he thought he understood about the boy in his arms. "Sixteen years," he said, quiet. "You’re telling me this has been true for sixteen years and nothing ever showed it."
"It didn’t need to show," the voice said. "It only needed to be quiet. I was good at quiet. Better than anyone gave me credit for."
*
The figure made a sound that wasn’t quite a word.
"That’s why the crack matched," it said, gold light flaring across its face. "That’s why all of ours matched. It was never Obito shaping us to look alike on purpose. It was — " it stopped, started again, voice climbing toward something between grief and fury, "it was you leaking into all of us the entire time, and none of us ever knew we were carrying a piece of the same person."
"Yes," the voice said. Simply. No apology in it, no defensiveness — just confirmation, delivered the way a fact gets delivered once there’s finally room to say it out loud.
Danzo’s eyes narrowed. "Then the seventeenth construct isn’t trying to complete itself with something foreign. It’s trying to complete itself with something that was already, structurally, partly its own."
"Correct," the newcomer said, quiet now, its earlier certainty gone thin. "Which means I was wrong about what I am. I told you I was the source. I’m not. I’m one of two things he was cut from — and I never knew there was a second, because the second one never left."
Hiruzen, silent since the seventeenth bloom split open, finally spoke again, voice carrying the flat calm of a man weighing a decision he already suspected he wouldn’t like. "Then this changes what ’rescue’ even means here. We’re not pulling a stranger’s fragment out of a stranger. We’re being asked to stop a person from losing a piece of himself older than every alliance in this corridor combined."
Nobody answered him. Nobody needed to. The truth of it was already written across Orochimaru’s face.
*
The pull in Kagetsu’s chest tightened again. Not a demand this time — a countdown.
[Talent Card: Divergent Expression]
Component in transit: 34% and falling
Estimated time to full transfer: UNKNOWN, accelerating
FLAG: Host survivability post-transfer cannot be calculated. No precedent exists for a component this integrated departing a living host.
"Then stop it," Orochimaru said, flat, absolute, the words costing him something to keep level. "Whatever it takes. Stop it."
"I can’t," the newcomer said. "I told you already — I’ve never had to test whether the seam could be closed. I’m telling you now I don’t know how to stop a piece of someone from going home when it’s already decided to."
"It’s not deciding," the voice inside Kagetsu said, and for the first time it sounded less patient. Frightened, almost. "I don’t want this. I’ve been quiet for sixteen years because being quiet was the only thing keeping him whole. I’m not choosing to leave. I’m being taken."
The half-formed construct, still framed in the seventeenth bloom’s widening tear, smiled with the working half of its mouth.
"Not taken," it said, voice clearer now than it had been all Chapter, gaining coherence as the pull strengthened. "Completed. You keep calling it theft. It’s just the last piece finally coming home to the rest of itself."
Behind it, along the seam’s length, the other bloom-points pulsed once in unison — not moving, not advancing, but reacting, like a held breath passed silently down a line of sixteen waiting figures. Nobody in the corridor had time to ask what that meant. Nobody needed Divergent Expression to tell them it meant something.
*
Kushina’s chains snapped forward — not at the construct, but past it, toward the seam itself, wrapping the split edges in gold-threaded restraint the way she’d once bound the wall-seal in Chapter 336’s opening months.
It didn’t slow the pull at all.
"That’s not going to work," the newcomer said, almost gently. "You’re not fighting a door anymore. You’re fighting gravity."
Minato was already moving, closing the last of the distance between himself and Kagetsu, kunai finally lowered because there was nothing left in the corridor a blade could reach. "Then give us something we can fight."
The newcomer looked at him. Looked past him, to Kagetsu, sagging further in Orochimaru’s arms with every second, the internal voice’s presence flickering now like a candle guttering toward the end of its wick.
"There’s one thing," it said slowly, like it hated saying it. "It’s never been tried. It’s never even been theorized, not by anyone who survived long enough to write it down."
"Say it," Hiruzen said.
The figure’s crack had stopped flaring and gone rigid instead, like it already knew what was coming and was bracing for it the way it braced for everything else this arc. "Whatever it is," it said, "say it fast. Look at him."
Kagetsu’s head had dropped forward against Orochimaru’s shoulder. His breathing had gone shallow, uneven, the internal voice’s presence flickering in time with it now — there, then thin, then there again, each cycle weaker than the last.
"You don’t stop the piece from leaving," the newcomer said. "You give it somewhere else to go that isn’t gone."
"Somewhere else," Kushina repeated, chains still uselessly wrapped around a seam that wasn’t the actual problem. "Where. Say a place. A person. Anything."
The newcomer looked at the seam behind it — at the seventeen bloom-points, at the ten-plus incomplete constructs still waiting their turn along its length, at the tear the half-formed thing had forced early — and then looked back at the wall-seal itself, gold light already surging past anything any of them had seen it produce before.
"I don’t get to choose," it said. "It already has."
The wall-seal’s gold light surged, sudden and violent, washing the whole corridor in a color none of them had seen it produce before — not the entity’s dull aged glow, not the figure’s gold, not the older-Kagetsu’s silver.
A fourth color.
And the voice inside Kagetsu screamed.
