Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri
Chapter 483 - 379 : What’s Already Leaving!!
The pain didn’t come from the crack.
It came from underneath it, a pulling sensation like something reaching a hand through Kagetsu’s own ribs and closing around a fistful of whatever the gold light was made of. It didn’t hurt the way a wound hurt. It hurt the way losing something hurts, a hollow ache spreading out from his sternum in slow, deliberate waves, each one taking a little more of the warmth with it.
He went down on one knee before he decided to.
"Kagetsu!" Orochimaru’s arm was already there, already bracing him, the same catch that had happened twice this week and was starting to feel less like a rescue and more like a routine neither of them had asked for.
"It’s not attacking," Kagetsu managed, teeth gritted. "It’s not — it doesn’t feel violent. It feels like something being removed."
Across the corridor, the figure had gone down too.
Both of them, on the floor, both cracks pulsing in a rhythm too clean to be coincidence.
---
[Talent Card: Divergent Expression — Active Extraction Read]
Subjects: Nara Kagetsu, split-faced figure
Event: Simultaneous partial-signature migration in progress
Kagetsu’s older-Kagetsu-fragment component: 91% → 84% and falling
Figure’s core-structure component: 79% → 71% and falling
Destination match: Unidentified seam entity (composite signature), both migrations
Rate: Slow. Not violent. Consistent with the entity’s stated claim — "already started happening."
Confidence: Low. Advisory: extraction rate appears self-limiting, not runaway. Reassess every sixty seconds.
---
"Stop it," Kushina said, chains already snapping toward the entity. "Whatever you’re doing to them, stop it right now."
"I’m not doing anything," the entity said, and for the first time its many layered voice held something that sounded almost like an apology. "I told you. I don’t have hands that let me choose things anymore. What’s happening to them isn’t me reaching out. It’s them, finally close enough that the pieces they’re carrying can hear where they came from."
"That’s not an answer," Orochimaru said. "That’s a threat wearing an explanation."
"It’s both," the entity admitted. "I didn’t ask for it to start the moment I stepped through. But I’m not going to pretend I’m sorry it’s happening, either. I’ve spent fifteen years in pieces. If proximity alone is enough to start pulling those pieces home, I’m not going to be the one who tells them to stop."
---
"Fight it," the older-Kagetsu voice said inside Kagetsu’s own skull, sharper than it had sounded since the merger. "You hear me? Whatever’s pulling — you push back against it. I didn’t cross a wall-seal and get folded into you just to get peeled back out again because something decided it wants its piece returned."
Kagetsu tried.
It was like trying to hold water in a closed fist. There was nothing to grip. The pulling sensation didn’t care about resistance the way a physical force would; it simply continued, patient, indifferent to how hard he clenched against it. He could feel the older-Kagetsu voice straining right alongside him, both of them throwing effort at a problem that had no surface to push against, no muscle to tense, nothing solid enough to fight.
"I can’t find the edge of it," Kagetsu said out loud, voice strained. "There’s no direction to push against. It’s not pulling from one point. It’s pulling from everywhere at once, a little at a time."
The figure, on its knees a few feet away, had both hands pressed against its own face, fingers spread wide around the crack like it could physically hold the shape of itself together by force. Its knuckles had gone white with the effort, a gesture that clearly wasn’t going to work and that it clearly wasn’t willing to stop trying anyway.
"I feel it too," it said. "It’s not fast. It’s not fast at all. But I don’t think slow means safe. I think slow just means it’s going to take longer to notice how much is already gone."
---
Hiruzen crouched down between them, old hands steady in a way that had nothing to do with jutsu and everything to do with having done this — held someone through something they couldn’t fight directly — more times than anyone in this corridor. He’d knelt over dying genin this same way, decades ago, with the same useless, necessary stillness.
"Then we don’t fight the pulling," he said. "We buy time. Every process that isn’t instant has a rate, and every rate can be slowed even if it can’t be stopped outright."
"With what?" Minato said. "We don’t have a technique for this. Nobody’s ever documented anything like this."
"No," Hiruzen agreed. "But Divergent Expression is documenting it right now, in real time, and it just told us the rate is self-limiting rather than runaway. That’s not nothing. That’s a variable we can work with instead of a fact we have to accept."
Danzo, watching the entity rather than the two people on the floor, spoke without turning.
"Ask it what stops the pulling," he said. "Not politely. Directly. If it claims it can’t control the process, then it should at least be able to describe the process, and a description is something we can use even if a solution isn’t offered freely." His voice carried the same flat certainty it always did, the certainty of a man who’d spent decades treating unknowns as problems to be dismantled rather than feared.
---
The entity considered that.
"Distance stops it," it said finally. "Or completion. Those are the only two ends I know of. If you move them away from me, the migration slows and eventually halts — the pull needs proximity to work at all. If you don’t, it continues until whatever they’re carrying of mine finishes coming home."
"And if it finishes," Kushina said, voice hard, "what happens to them? What happens to Kagetsu, once the older-Kagetsu piece is gone? What happens to the figure, once whatever’s holding its ’core structure’ together is gone?"
The entity’s shifting features didn’t settle this time. If anything, they moved faster, uncertain in a way that read less like evasion and more like genuine not-knowing.
"I don’t know," it said. "I’ve never done this before either. I’ve never been whole enough to find out what happens to a person when a piece of me leaves them. You’re asking me a question I don’t have the authority to answer, because I’ve never survived long enough in one piece to watch the aftermath." It said it plainly, without flinching from how unsatisfying an answer it was — the same flat honesty it had used for everything else since stepping through the seam.
---
Orochimaru didn’t wait for a vote.
He hauled Kagetsu upright and started moving him back down the corridor, away from the seam, away from the entity, fast enough that Kagetsu’s feet barely kept pace with his own legs.
Kushina’s chains scooped under the figure at the same instant, dragging it the same direction with considerably less gentleness than Orochimaru had managed. Minato fell in beside them without needing to be told, covering the retreat with his eyes fixed on the seam rather than the ground ahead.
[Talent Card: Divergent Expression — Distance Check]
Kagetsu’s older-Kagetsu-fragment component: 84% and holding — migration rate dropping sharply.
Figure’s core-structure component: 71% and holding — same trend.
Advisory: Distance is working. Continue retreat.
For three full seconds, it looked like it was going to be that simple.
Kagetsu felt the hollow ache in his chest ease, just slightly, just enough to notice the difference between agony and mere discomfort. He let himself believe, for those three seconds, that the worst of it was already over.
Then the entity took a single step forward — not toward them, not fast, just one measured step past the threshold of the seam it had emerged from — and both readouts dropped again, exactly as sharply as they’d stabilized.
"Distance from the seam," the entity said quietly, correcting itself with what sounded like genuine, unhappy surprise. "Not distance from me. I was wrong. It’s not me they’re being pulled toward."
It looked back at the still-shuddering gap behind it, something in its many-layered expression finally settling into a single, unified emotion for the first time since it had spoken.
Dread.
"Something on the other side is doing the pulling. I only stepped out of its way."
