Hearing Ukitake’s question, Shin just smiled.
“Mostly, I just got tired of being a captain. Don’t you guys find it a drag?” Shin asked Kyōraku and Ukitake.
Ukitake didn’t find being a captain to be a chore at all, but Kyōraku felt a deep sense of camaraderie. The captain’s duties were so demanding they barely left him time to relax.
“I think you’re the only one who finds it tiresome, Shin,” Ukitake finally said.
“And me! Don’t forget about me. I’m tired of being a captain too,” Kyōraku immediately added, turning to Ukitake.
“If you’re so tired of it, why don’t you go tell Master Yamamoto?” Ukitake asked.
“I’d love to, but I’m afraid Old Man Yama would cut me down on the spot,” Kyōraku said with a sigh.
He didn’t have Shin’s nerve to go and ask Yamamoto. He knew all too well how short the old man’s temper could be. Even though he had mellowed out a lot over the years, Kyōraku still didn’t dare to provoke him.
Besides, there weren’t many people in the Soul Society qualified to take over as captain right now. The previous mass defection of captains had severely weakened the Gotei 13.
“Honestly, it’s a shame. But it’s your choice, Shin. It’s not our place to try and change your mind.”
Ukitake still felt it was a pity that Shin was no longer a captain.
After that, Kyōraku and Ukitake didn’t stay long. They had come to find out why Shin had stepped down. Ukitake had initially heard it as a rumor and couldn’t believe it. But it turned out to be true—Shin really had given up his captaincy.

After about half a month of lazing around, trouble came looking for Shin. Old Man Yama sent someone to summon him.
‘Fine, I’ll give the old man some face.’
Shin headed to the 1st Division barracks. When he arrived, he found Yamamoto still hard at work.
“I’m telling you, Old Man Yama, you’re getting on in years. You work too hard. You should really think about finding a successor,” Shin said to the busy Captain-Commander.
“Why don’t you take over?” Yamamoto looked up at Shin.
“…” Shin immediately clammed up.
‘You’ve got to be kidding me. I don’t even want to be a captain, and you want me to be the Captain-Commander? That job comes with even less freedom.’
“Alright, let’s not waste time. I can see you’re busy. To make things easier for you, just tell me what you want,”
Shin said to Yamamoto, getting straight to the point.
“But I’ll say this first—if you assign me something I don’t like, don’t blame me for turning you down. It’s better you don’t ask at all than for me to disrespect you later.”
Shin laid his cards on the table.
“I’ve called you here because I want you to go to the Shin’ō Academy. I want you to become a teacher there,” Yamamoto said to Shin.
Shin’s directness was something Yamamoto appreciated. He wasn’t one for beating around the bush either.
“You want me to be a teacher at the Shin’ō Academy?” Shin was surprised. He hadn’t expected Yamamoto to have this idea.
“Are you sure you want me to teach at the Shin’ō Academy?” Shin asked.
“Is there a problem?” Yamamoto looked up at Shin, not understanding what he meant.
“Aren’t you afraid I’ll lead the students astray?” Shin said with a faint smile.
“Will you accept or not? If you’re not willing, then forget it.”
Yamamoto asked Shin again. It was up to him. Even if he refused, it didn’t matter. But if he accepted, it would be a good thing.
“Alright, I’ll do it,” Shin nodded to Yamamoto.
“After all, I’ve always enjoyed playing the role of a mentor. I’m quite happy to teach people,” Shin said with a smile.
Hearing Shin’s words, Yamamoto actually started to feel a little uneasy. ‘I hope he doesn’t actually turn the entire academy upside down.’
“Alright. In that case, I won’t say any more. Here is the appointment letter. Take this and go to the Shin’ō Academy.”
Yamamoto handed Shin the appointment letter he had prepared in advance. If Shin had refused, the letter would have been useless.
With the letter in hand, Shin left the 1st Division barracks.

Returning to the 2nd Division, Shin was met with curious gazes from Yoruichi and Soi Fon.
“Um, Shin-sama, what did they want with you at the 1st Division barracks?” Soi Fon asked.
“Yeah, something came up. I’m a teacher at the Shin’ō Academy now,” Shin said, showing them the appointment letter.
“You’re a teacher at the Shin’ō Academy? Are you really cut out for that?” Yoruichi looked at Shin, her eyes filled with disbelief.
“Hey, what’s with that look? You don’t think I’m suited to be a teacher? What part of me isn’t suited?” Shin asked, a little annoyed by Yoruichi’s reaction.
“It just doesn’t seem like a good fit.”
Yoruichi didn’t doubt Shin’s ability to teach—he was an incredible mentor. Without his guidance, neither she nor Soi Fon would have their current level of strength. They were far stronger now than their original counterparts.
But when it came to responsibility, Shin was seriously lacking. He loved to slack off. What if he was always slacking off while teaching students?
“I’m heading to the Shin’ō Academy. I’ll talk to you guys later.” Shin packed a few things and left.
“He’s really going. It’s probably just a whim,” Yoruichi said, watching Shin’s retreating figure.
“It’s good for Shin-sama to have something to do,” Soi Fon commented.
“No, I have to go see this.” Yoruichi suddenly said, then handed all her work to Soi Fon.
Soi Fon smiled wryly. ‘It seems like I’m always the one handling the 2nd Division’s affairs…’
———————————————
“Why are you following me?” Shin asked, looking at Yoruichi trailing behind him.
“I want to see you teach students. I’m actually quite curious,” Yoruichi said with a faint smile.
“Curious my ass. Haven’t I taught you before?” Shin shot her a glance. ‘She’s probably just coming along for the show.’
‘Well, if she wants to follow, let her. It’s not like I can get rid of her anyway. And she won’t be in the way.’
