After Shin’s warning, Yoruichi finally got serious, dropping the casual disdain she’d had for the Gillian.

“<Shunkō>.”

Activating her Shunkō, Yoruichi’s shoulders and back were enveloped in a dense, tangible cloak of Reiatsu.

She erupted with terrifying speed, appearing before the Gillian in an instant and landing a direct punch on its mask.

“Break!”

With a roar, the Gillian’s entire mask shattered under the force of her blow, and the creature dissolved into spirit particles.

“That wasn’t so hard after all.”

Yoruichi turned to Shin. A single Gillian, and she’d taken it down with one hit.

“This Gillian wasn’t particularly strong. It was probably one of the weakest of its kind, so don’t get cocky and underestimate the others.”

Shin reminded her. While most Gillians weren’t very intelligent, there were exceptions.

Some special Gillians possessed a high degree of intelligence. Shin had encountered one years ago, back when he was with Shunsui Kyōraku.

A creature like that was no pushover, and Shin didn’t want to see Yoruichi get careless. He could save her, of course.

But what if he wasn’t around? He couldn’t be there to rescue her every single time.

“I know.” Although Yoruichi’s expression seemed nonchalant, she took his words to heart.

“As long as you actually get it. I’d hate to think you’re just humoring me.”

Shin shook his head, deciding not to dwell on it. Yoruichi would learn whether his advice was sound once she faced a truly powerful opponent.

“Let’s go. Time to find more Gillians.”

Shin said to Yoruichi. Hueco Mundo was still the same desolate wasteland. He wondered if it would ever change.

“It’d be great if we ran into an Adjuchas. Then I could really test my strength,” Yoruichi said with a smile.

“You’re getting ahead of yourself. If you actually fought an Adjuchas right now, even if it didn’t kill you instantly, it would defeat you easily.”

Shin glanced at her. The current Yoruichi was not the powerhouse she would one day become. She was only seventeen, still a fledgling compared to the veteran Soul Reapers.

After all, some Soul Reapers were centuries old. Shin himself had been in this world for a hundred years.

“I think I can hold my own,” Yoruichi insisted, her confidence unwavering.

“Fine. The next time we find an Adjuchas, I’ll let you have a go. It seems you won’t understand how terrifying Hueco Mundo is until you get a taste of a real fight.”

“I think that’s a lesson for you. You knew how dangerous this place was, and you still brought me here.”

Yoruichi shot a look at Shin.

“That’s because Hueco Mundo isn’t dangerous to me. I could level this entire place with ease.”

The dangers of Hueco Mundo were for other Soul Reapers. For Shin, this place was no different from his own backyard.

Though calling it a backyard would kill the mood. The scenery in Hueco Mundo was anything but pleasant.

“So, just how strong are you, Shin?” Yoruichi asked.

“Remember to call me ‘Sensei’.” Shin placed a hand on Yoruichi’s head and ruffled her short hair until it was a mess.

Yoruichi dodged away from his hand with a look of annoyance.

“You know, I think you look great with long hair,” Shin said, looking at her.

“Really?” His words hit home, and Yoruichi actually considered letting it grow out.

‘It’s not because of what he said,’ she told herself. ‘I just had the idea on my own. That’s all.’

Shin, oblivious to her inner tsundere moment, stopped and said, “Get ready to fight. Your opponents are here. And this time, it’s three Gillians.”

“Three Gillians?” Yoruichi’s senses flared, and she finally detected them.

“Be careful. Don’t make me keep reminding you. I’m with you now, but if I weren’t, you’d be in real danger.”

Although he was lecturing her, Shin genuinely cared for her well-being. Otherwise, he wouldn’t bother.

“I know.” This time, Yoruichi didn’t argue. She realized she had become a bit too reliant on Shin.

It was as if his presence made all the danger disappear.

“Facing three Gillians won’t be easy for you. Be careful.”

With one down, dealing with the other two became much easier. The greatest weakness of a Gillian was, after all, its low intelligence.

A Raikōhō, cast without an incantation, struck the last Gillian that hadn’t been attacked. The single blast didn’t kill it, but it sent the creature flying.

“I think my fists are more useful than Kidō,” Yoruichi couldn’t help but say.

“That’s why you’re so violent,” Shin remarked upon hearing her, which earned him a dark look from Yoruichi.

“Don’t distract me while I’m fighting. If I get hurt, it’s your fault.” Yoruichi, sensing an attack from the Gillians, immediately turned to face them.

She had no time to argue with Shin now. She had to deal with these two Gillians first. After taking care of them, she felt much more at ease.

Facing the attacks of two Gillians, she was completely at ease, even able to counterattack effortlessly.
