Chapter 1440: It Only Had Two Attacks

  • Next Chapter

A dragon's roar followed.

Seraphina returned to her dragon form and swept over the others, her massive body filling the space above them. Her hardened scales scraped against the air with a long, piercing shriek. She opened her jaws, compressing scorching dragonfire into a crimson orb in her throat before blasting it straight at Lunethar.

The flames burned a blazing path through the darkness. Hidden behind them, Seraphina closed in with one claw aimed at Lunethar's eyes.

The others' ranged attacks arrived at the same time.

Energy converged from every direction, crashing toward Lunethar in overlapping waves. Yet not one of its eight eyes showed the slightest hint of alarm.

The eyeballs detached from their sockets one after another and floated around the giant head. Seven turned in different directions. Dark blue points appeared in their pupils, then erupted into a dense barrage of lasers.

The largest eye remained directly in front. Its pupil widened, and a thick beam of blue light tore through the center of the battlefield.

The two sides' attacks collided head-on.

Lasers forced Ataneya's tails apart. Her infernal energy sphere swelled rapidly when it met the blue light, cracks splitting across its surface before it exploded into a wave of fire.

The thick laser halted Andona's holy light. Gold and blue energy ground against each other, sending waves of force through the darkness.

Several lasers sliced apart Seraphina's dragon breath, splitting the stream of fire and sending it surging past on both sides, illuminating her tensed claws.

Seraphina and Andona both felt the pressure.

The lasers contained far more energy than either had expected. With every collision, the beams continued advancing without any sign of weakening.

But after observing Lunethar for a moment, they both noticed the same problem.

Aside from spatial control and lasers, it hadn't shown any other means of attack.

Two abilities.

At least for now, that was all it had.

Seraphine, still pinned in the distance, had noticed as well. She sent Light Force surging along her arm and forced her fingers open. Primordial Death Energy gathered in her palm.

Gray-white energy formed a bow of death, while she compressed Light Force into a long, slender arrow. The two opposing forces met along the bowstring. The bow shook violently, but the arrowhead only grew brighter.

She released the string.

The arrow rose along the edge of a laser, avoiding the beam head-on. Then it changed direction, slipped through the gap between two blue rays, and flew straight toward one of the smaller eyeballs.

The others immediately focused on the same target.

Kaelira raised a purple-red energy sphere. One of Ataneya's tails wrapped around it from the side, spun several times, then hurled it high into the air.

As the sphere passed Seraphina, she lifted her head and blasted it with dragonfire. Flames enveloped the sphere and accelerated it again, sending it arcing toward another eyeball.

Lunethar saw what they were planning.

"You think this is my only attack?"

All eight eyes turned at once, weaving dozens of lasers into a net.

"Sorry. I have two."

After a brief pause, it added with surprising honesty,

"Though yes, I only have two."

The Primordial Death Energy attacking from the front was intercepted first. More than a dozen lasers struck from different angles, cutting the gray-white energy apart. The remnants of its deathly power crept a short distance along the beams before the continued flow of energy scattered them completely.

But the light arrow slipped through the narrowest gap in the laser net.

Its tip grazed a blue beam, stripping away most of its outer layer of Light Force, but the arrow never veered off course. A moment later, it pierced the pupil of a smaller eyeball and burst out the back.

The eye hung motionless for a moment. Gray-white cracks spread across its surface, and then it crumbled completely.

Lunethar's voice deepened.

Its abilities might be limited, but that didn't mean these people could treat its attacks like they were nothing. What infuriated it even more was that none of its dense barrage of lasers had actually struck a single target.

Just one hit would be enough.

It wouldn't take long. From impact to disappearance, they would see the entire process. Then they would understand exactly what the self-proclaimed Pale Moon God could do.

"You've gone too far!"

Lunethar's roar shook the entire dark space.

The blue light within the remaining eyeballs rapidly deepened, and the number of lasers increased. The largest eye ignored every other target and locked its pupil on Ataneya. Energy contracted into it from all around, compressing the point of light into a blinding blue-white glare.

Then it fired a massive beam.

Ataneya had barely begun spreading her fox tails when Seraphine broke free and landed in front of the group.

Light Force poured from her arms, first forming a thin white membrane before expanding into a curved shield. Andona landed beside her and folded all twenty pairs of wings forward, channeling Divine Power into the shield's center.

Below them, Seraphina folded her dragon wings and braced her enormous body against the shield. Both claws dug deep into the void as she pushed forward with all her strength.

The blue laser struck the shield head-on.

The point of impact first contracted into a tiny speck of brilliant light. Then dozens of cracks burst outward.

The shield and everyone behind it were driven backward, carving a groove more than a hundred feet long through the darkness. Seraphine's arms trembled. Andona's golden wings were forced farther and farther back, while rings of displaced air spread beneath Seraphina's claws.

Ataneya's tails swept in from both sides and wrapped around the edges of the shield, adding her strength to theirs.

At last, their retreat stopped.

As the laser continued grinding against the shield, another pair of eyes watched the battle from behind some strange veil.

"You started a fight without me?"

Ethan looked at the giant eight-eyed head, then at the others being forced back. Annoyance crept into his voice.

"You're supposed to be the final boss, aren't you?"

He had never seen such a pathetic boss. It only had two abilities, and the second wasn't even impressive. Yet summoning it required that many sacrifices.

It needed to die.

The blue laser gradually narrowed before breaking apart into scattered motes of light. The moment the shield stabilized, everyone split off in different directions, refusing to give Lunethar another chance to catch them all in one attack.

Only Feylora stayed close.

Seraphine remained beside her, steadying her breathing while maintaining a small shield with Light Force. Feylora needed to keep replenishing everyone's energy. Seraphine couldn't let those eyes catch her off guard.

Lunethar turned its head, its eight sockets tracking the scattered figures one by one.

Only an empty cavity remained where the light arrow had destroyed one eye. But the flesh soon bulged outward. A new socket grew from the surface, blue light gathering inside it as a replacement eye opened.

All eight eyes were whole again.

Their previous attack had accomplished nothing.

But no one stopped fighting.

Ethan was still outside, waiting for them.

Andona flew back into the air. Golden light rapidly expanded behind her, and the enormous image of an Angel appeared at her back. It was even larger than Lunethar, its outstretched wings extending to both sides and bathing half the battlefield in gold.

"Feel the power of the divine!"

Andona thrust both palms forward, firing a beam of golden holy light from her body. The Angel behind her mirrored the motion and unleashed an even larger pillar of divine light.

The two attacks merged ahead of her and surged straight toward Lunethar.

Lunethar had no choice but to divide its attention.

Four large eyes turned toward Andona and fired blue lasers at once. The four beams merged along the way, then collided with the golden holy light.

The opposing forces didn't immediately explode. Instead, they formed a constantly distorting patch of light between them, compressing the surrounding space until it filled with hairline cracks.

The other four eyes continued watching everyone else.

Andona's plan was obvious.

She was holding off half the eyes by herself, giving the others room to attack.

Seraphina seized the opportunity first.

She folded her wings and shot forward along the edge of the golden beam. One of the eyes opposing Andona failed to turn in time, and Seraphina was already upon it.

Scorching dragonfire struck the pupil head-on and engulfed the eyeball. One dragon claw closed over it from above, while the other cupped it from below.

Both claws crushed inward.

The eyeball burst between them. Luminous blue fluid streamed through the gaps between her claws and scattered into the darkness.

Only three eyes remained to oppose Andona.

The golden holy light immediately advanced. Lunethar had to pour more energy into the remaining eyes before the blue beam stabilized again.

Seraphina didn't retreat.

She turned and blasted the other three large eyes with dragonfire. Her enormous body smashed through the scattered lasers as she roared and closed in. Her claws raked across the edge of one eyeball, leaving several deep gashes, and her next strike cracked another open.
