The capital city of Valkar stretched out before them as their carriage rolled steadily through its wide, bustling streets. Towering buildings lined the roads, their windows glowing warmly against the afternoon light, while banners bearing the royal crest hung from nearly every lamppost, fluttering gently in the cool breeze.

People along the roadside paused to watch as their carriage passed, though it wasn’t the only one drawing attention. A long procession of similarly grand carriages wound its way steadily toward the towering royal palace in the distance, each one carrying nobles from across the empire, all summoned specifically for tonight’s ball.

Neo peered out the window, taking in the sheer scale of the city. "Guess half the empire’s nobility decided to show up tonight."

Nora, seated across from him, said nothing, though her sharp eyes tracked the passing crowd with quiet, careful attention.

Once they finally arrived at the palace grounds, servants quickly ushered them toward their assigned guest chambers, explaining that they still had several hours before the ball officially began. Neo and Nora were led down separate hallways, given rooms on opposite sides of the same wing.

As they parted ways, Neo caught the faintest flicker of something crossing Nora’s expression, a brief, subtle downturn at the mention of separate rooms, gone almost as quickly as it appeared.

He brushed the thought aside, assuming he’d simply imagined it, and made his way into his own chamber.

The room was spacious and comfortable, decorated in elegant, muted tones befitting a guest of noble standing. Neo barely had the energy to appreciate any of it, collapsing onto the bed almost immediately, the exhaustion from days of travel finally catching up to him. Within minutes, he’d drifted off into a deep, dreamless sleep.

He woke sometime later to the sound of knocking at his door.

Groggily, he sat up, rubbing his eyes as he stumbled toward the entrance, his hair still messy from sleep. He pulled the door open, expecting a servant come to remind him about the time.

Instead, standing there in the soft glow of the hallway lanterns, was the most beautiful face he had ever seen.

Nora stood before him in a deep violet gown, the fabric shimmering faintly with delicate silver embroidery that traced elegant patterns along the bodice and flowing skirt. Her violet hair had been styled into soft, cascading waves, pinned back on one side with a small silver ornament shaped like a crescent moon. Her lavender eyes, usually so distant and unreadable, seemed to catch the light in a way that made them appear almost luminous.

Neo froze completely, his breath catching somewhere in his throat.

’Wait. That’s Nora, right? That’s definitely Nora.’

He’d grown so used to her preference for simple, practical clothing over the years that seeing her dressed like this, dressed for a royal ball, felt like looking at someone entirely different.

His heart hammered unexpectedly against his ribs, a strange, unfamiliar heat creeping up the back of his neck. He quickly turned his face away, clearing his throat loudly in an attempt to compose himself.

"Right, uh, give me a minute. I need to get ready."

He ducked back into his room hastily, closing the door most of the way while he scrambled to change. He splashed cold water on his face, pulled on his formal attire, and spent several extra minutes carefully styling his hair until it sat perfectly, sharp and refined, framing his sharp features exactly the way he wanted.

Satisfied with his appearance, he stepped back out into the hallway, standing a little straighter than usual.

Nora studied him silently for a long moment; her expression giving nothing away.

"So?" Neo asked, gesturing toward himself with a small, confident grin. "How do I look?"

Instead of answering, Nora stepped closer, reaching up without warning to ruffle his carefully styled hair, mussing it thoroughly out of place. Before he could even react, she tugged at his collar, loosening it slightly, then reached down to deliberately crease the front of his neatly pressed jacket.

"Wait, what are you doing?!" Neo yelped, quickly stepping back and swatting her hands away, though the damage was already done. "I spent twenty minutes on that!"

Nora simply folded her arms, turning her gaze away toward the distant end of the hallway, offering no explanation whatsoever for her sudden act of sabotage.

Neo stared at her, thoroughly confused, running a hand through his now thoroughly disheveled hair in a futile attempt to fix it.

"Seriously, why would you do that? I looked perfect!"

Nora remained silent, her expression carefully blank, though there was something distinctly stubborn in the way she refused to meet his eyes.

Neo sighed heavily, giving up on salvaging his hairstyle entirely, deciding it wasn’t worth the argument. He reached out instead and gently took hold of her hand.

"Whatever. Come on, let’s just get this over with."

Nora’s fingers curled naturally around his own as he led her down the hallway, the faint, satisfied curve of her lips hidden carefully behind her usual composed expression, though Neo, still focused on his ruined hairstyle, remained completely unaware of it.

...

Nora’s POV:

Nora sat quietly in front of the mirror as the palace maids assigned to her worked carefully through her long violet hair, weaving it into soft, elegant waves. She said nothing throughout the entire process, simply watching her own reflection with the same distant, unreadable expression she always wore in front of strangers.

It wasn’t that she cared much for the gown chosen for her, or the delicate silver ornament being carefully pinned into her hair. If it had been up to her, she would have worn something far simpler, something practical, the way she always preferred. But tonight wasn’t about her own comfort. Tonight, like most nights involving the nobility, was about presentation.

Once the maids finally finished, she rose and studied herself briefly in the mirror, the deep violet gown catching the candlelight in soft, shimmering waves.

She thought little of it.

Her mind, as it so often did lately, had already wandered elsewhere.

Making her way down the hallway toward Neo’s chamber, she had already dismissed the servants who were heading there to help him get ready. When she finally reached his door, she paused for a moment before gently knocking. A moment later, it opened, revealing him still half-asleep, his silver hair a messy tangle from his nap, his shirt slightly rumpled.

Something in her chest eased slightly at the sight.

He looked at her, and for a brief second, something shifted behind his eyes, a flicker of surprise, followed quickly by something else entirely, something he tried and failed to hide as he abruptly turned his face away.

Nora studied that reaction carefully, filing it away.

’He looked away, Why did he look away?’

He mumbled something about needing time to get ready before disappearing back into his room, leaving her standing alone in the hallway.

She waited.

Minutes passed. She could hear faint movement from inside, the soft rustle of fabric, quiet murmurs she couldn’t make out. Curiosity, along with something else she didn’t quite have a name for, eventually drew her to peer through the gap left by the door not fully closed.

Inside, Neo stood in front of his own mirror, meticulously working through his silver hair strand by strand, adjusting it with careful, deliberate precision until it framed his sharp features exactly the way he wanted. He straightened his collar, smoothed down the front of his jacket, checking his reflection from multiple angles with obvious satisfaction.

Nora watched silently from the doorway, her expression giving nothing away, though something uncomfortable twisted quietly in her chest.

’He’s trying so hard to look perfect.’

The thought settled uneasily inside her.

She knew exactly what tonight’s ball actually was, beneath all its polished formality. A gathering of ambitious noble families, each one eager to introduce their most eligible daughters to any young lord of appropriate standing. And there he was, standing in front of the mirror, carefully perfecting every last detail of his appearance, preparing to walk into a room filled with exactly those kinds of girls.

Her fingers curled slightly at her sides.

’Why does he need to look so perfect for them?’

She didn’t examine the thought any further than that, though the uncomfortable weight in her chest only grew heavier the longer she watched him adjust his hair for what had to be the third time.

Finally, he turned, satisfied, and made his way back toward the door.

The moment he stepped out, Nora moved before she’d even fully decided to.

Her hand reached up, fingers threading through his carefully styled hair, mussing it thoroughly out of place before he could react. She tugged at his collar next, loosening it deliberately, then reached down and pressed a firm crease into the front of his neatly pressed jacket.

"Wait, what are you doing?!" Neo yelped, jerking back and swatting her hands away, though the damage had already been done. "I spent twenty minutes on that!"

Nora said nothing, folding her arms and turning her gaze pointedly toward the far end of the hallway, refusing to offer any explanation at all.

She wasn’t entirely sure herself why she’d done it. She only knew that the thought of him walking into that ballroom looking so effortlessly perfect, drawing the attention of every noble daughter present, had settled something sharp and unpleasant low in her stomach, and undoing even a small part of that perfection had eased it, if only slightly.

’If he looks a little messy, maybe fewer of them will look at him the way I don’t want them to.’ she thought, glancing sideways at him as he grumbled under his breath, running a frustrated hand through his now-disheveled hair,

Neo sighed heavily beside her, clearly giving up on fixing his hair entirely, before reaching out and gently taking her hand instead.

"Whatever. Come on, let’s just get this over with."

Nora’s fingers curled naturally around his, her expression remaining perfectly composed, betraying nothing of the small, quiet satisfaction settling behind her calm eyes.

As they walked together down the long hallway toward the grand ballroom, she allowed herself one brief, private thought, something she would never dare say aloud.

’Let them look. He’s still coming home with me tonight.’
