My Yandere Beast Husbands
Chapter 52: The Pawn’s Last Breath
The dungeon was cold.
Renira had been lying on the stone floor for what felt like hours. Or days. She couldn’t tell anymore. Time had lost all meaning in this place, where the only sounds were the drip of water from somewhere in the darkness and her own breathing.
Her back was on fire.
Every breath she took sent pain rippling through her torn flesh. The lashes had carved deep grooves into her skin, and she could feel the dried blood cracking with every tiny movement.
She had stopped screaming hours ago. Her voice was gone, reduced to a hoarse, pathetic croak that didn’t even sound like her anymore.
How did I end up here?
The question circled in her mind like a bird, beating its wings against the walls of her skull. She had been so close. So painfully close to everything she had ever wanted.
Leonidas’s love. The crown. The power that was rightfully hers.
She stole it from me. That witch. That fraud. She stole everything.
Renira’s fingers curled weakly against the stone, her nails scraping against the rough surface. Even now, even with her body broken and her spirit crushed, the hatred burned in her chest.
I would do it again, she thought, her cracked lips twitching. I would poison that brat again. I would watch him die. I would watch her weep.
But the thought brought no satisfaction. Only pain.
She was going to die eventually. In this cold, dark, forgotten corner of the world. She was going to rot in this cell while that woman sat on her throne, surrounded by her sons and her power and her false righteousness.
The tears came then, streaming down her dirty cheeks and dripping onto the stone floor.
Please... please, someone...
She didn’t even know what she was begging for. Mercy? Death? A second chance?
All she knew was that she didn’t want to be alone. She didn’t want to die in this darkness, with no one to witness her final breath, no one to mourn her passing.
Leonidas... my love... where are you? Why aren’t you coming for me?
But she already knew the answer. He wasn’t coming. He had chosen her. He had chosen that witch. He had thrown Renira away like she was nothing, like the two years of love and devotion she had given him meant absolutely nothing at all.
I hate him, she thought, the tears coming faster now. I hate him. I hate him. I hate—
CREAK.
Renira’s breath caught in her throat.
The sound echoed through the dungeon silence. It was the sound of a door opening. Heavy iron hinges, long unused, groaning in protest.
Renira’s head snapped up, her eyes straining against the darkness.
The door. Someone opened the door.
For a moment, she was seized by a foolish hope. Leonidas. He’s come for me. He realized his mistake. He’s going to save me.
But the hope died as quickly as it had bloomed.
Because the figure standing in the doorway wasn’t Leonidas.
It was a man, his features completely obscured by shadow. He stood perfectly still, his silhouette framed against the dim torchlight of the corridor beyond.
Renira’s heart began to pound.
"Who... who’s there?" she croaked. "Who are you?"
The man didn’t answer. He simply stepped forward, his boots echoing against the stone floor.
And then she saw it.
Behind him, emerging from the darkness of the corridor, came a massive shape. A panther.
Renira’s blood ran cold.
The panther. The one who came to me. The one who promised me power.
"Please," she gasped, her body trembling so violently that her chains rattled against the stone. "Please, I did what you asked. I did everything you said. I tried to poison the boy—"
"You failed."
The panther stepped past the shadowy man, its paws silent against the stone, and stopped just a few feet away from Renira’s chained body.
"I gave you a simple task," the panther continued, its glowing eyes fixed on her. "One child. One innocent child. And you couldn’t even manage that."
Renira’s breath came in short, panicked gasps. "No—no, I almost succeeded! He was so close! If—"
"Excuses," the panther interrupted. "I have no use for excuses. I have no use for failures."
Tears streamed down Renira’s face, carving tracks through the grime and dried blood. "Please! I can try again! I can do better! Just give me another chance—"
"You had your chance," the panther said, its voice devoid of mercy. "And you wasted it."
Renira’s gaze darted to the shadowy man standing behind the panther. He hadn’t moved. He hadn’t spoken. He simply stood there, a silent witness to her complete destruction.
"I helped you!" Renira shrieked, her voice breaking with desperation. "I did what you said! I followed your instructions! Without me, you wouldn’t have gotten anywhere near the prince! You needed me!"
The panther tilted its head, its glowing eyes narrowing with something that might have been contempt.
"You were a tool," it said flatly. "A disposable pawn. And now that you’ve been compromised, you are nothing but a liability."
Renira’s chains rattled as she lunged forward, stretching her bound hands toward the massive beast. "NO! NO, PLEASE! I CAN STILL BE USEFUL! I KNOW THINGS! I KNOW ABOUT THE PALACE, ABOUT THE GUARDS, ABOUT—"
"You know nothing," the panther interrupted. "You are a delusional woman with delusions of grandeur. You were never anything more than a convenient vessel for my poison."
Renira’s breath caught in her throat. Her eyes widened, the horror of his words washing over her.
"P-Please," she begged, her voice reduced to a pathetic, whimpering plea. "Please don’t. I’ll do anything. I’ll—"
"You talk too much," the panther observed.
And then it moved.
Renira barely had time to scream.
The panther lunged forward, its massive jaws closing around her throat. There was a sickening crunch, the sound of bone and cartilage giving way, and then—
Nothing.
Renira’s body went limp, her eyes still wide with terror, her mouth frozen in a silent scream.
The panther released her, shaking its head once to dislodge the blood that had splattered across its muzzle. It turned away, its paws padding silently across the stone floor as it walked back toward the shadowy man.
"You know what to do," the panther said. "Make it look like an accident. A suicide, perhaps. The Empress will be blamed for driving the poor, broken mistress to take her own life."
The shadowy man nodded once, his face still hidden in the darkness. "As you wish, my lord."
The panther paused at the threshold, its glowing eyes flickering back toward Renira’s lifeless form. It let out a soft, almost disappointed sigh.
"What a waste," it murmured. "She could have been useful. If only she hadn’t been so pathetic."
And then it was gone, melting into the shadows of the corridor like it had never been there at all.
The shadowy man stood alone in the dungeon, staring down at Renira’s body. The blood was already pooling beneath her against the cold stone.
He crouched down, his gloved fingers gently closing her staring eyes.
"Rest now," he whispered, his voice strangely soft. "Your suffering is over."
