My Yandere Beast Husbands

Chapter 21: Welcome to Shadow Edge

"Your Imperial Majesty, wake up,"

Karina felt someone tap her shoulders gently, and she sprung away, disgusted to find that drool had somehow trailed down her open mouth.

Oh right, I fell asleep.

They had been traveling for a long time, briefly spending the night at another inn so the horses could rest.

Now, they were just about to cross into the Panther kingdom, and Valen’s eyes were wide open. Sophie’s too, both of them looking out the window in awe.

Wiping her mouth properly, Karina shoved her head toward the window, wondering what the two were seeing.

Oh damn.

The entrance to the Panther Kingdom was nothing short of monumental. Two colossal, black stone panthers stood on either side of the road, their bodies arching inward to form a massive, living bridge-like gate. Their stone eyes glowed faintly with a magical amber light, watching over all who passed beneath them.

Woahhhh.

Aldric and Leonidas rode ahead, their horses’ hooves clattering against the stone pavement as they passed under the giant panther arch. The shadow of the massive beasts fell over them, and for a moment, Karina felt like she was entering the mouth of a sleeping titan.

The carriage rolled through after them.

And then....Shadow’s Edge opened up before her.

It was breathtaking. The city sprawled across the mountain valley, a labyrinth of dark stone architecture intertwined with lush green terraces and cascading waterfalls. The streets were alive with movement.

Beasts.

Panthers, everywhere.

Some were in their full animal forms, massive black cats lounging on sun-warmed rooftops, their tails flicking lazily. Others prowled the cobblestone streets in their human forms, but with distinct features: ears twitching, tails swaying, sharp fangs peeking through their smiles. Children, cubs, chased each other through the market square, their playful yowls echoing off the stone walls.

Valen gasped, his small hands pressing against the glass. "Wow..."

Sophie leaned in beside him, her pink eyes wide. "There are so many of them..."

Valen nodded slowly, still staring. He didn’t look scared one bit. If anything, he looked... curious.

Karina smiled softly. He’s seeing his people. His heritage.

As the carriage rolled through the main thoroughfare, the crowd began to notice them.

People stopped mid-step. Merchants paused their haggling. A group of young panther warriors, broad-chested and wearing traditional leather tunics, froze in their tracks. Then, one by one, they dropped to their knees.

"It’s the King!"

"The Empress! The Empress of Zyleria!"

Whispers rippled through the crowd like wildfire. They gawked at the carriage, at the massive panther king riding ahead, at the small black-eared prince peeking out the window.

The carriage finally pulled to a stop in front of the royal palace, a towering fortress carved into the mountain itself.

Karina took a deep breath. Okay. Time to be an Empress.

The door opened, and she stepped out. Her gown was wrinkled from the long journey, but she smoothed it down and lifted her chin. Valen scrambled out after her, immediately grabbing her skirt. Sophie followed closely behind.

Leonidas dismounted from his horse, his boots hitting the cobblestones. Aldric dismounted a second later, and before Leonidas could even turn, Aldric was already striding toward Karina.

"Your Imperial Majesty," Aldric said, his blue eyes scanning her face with genuine concern. "Are you well? The journey was long, and you were asleep—"

"I’m fine, Aldric," Karina said, offering him a reassuring smile. "Thank you for your concern."

Leonidas watched the exchange from a few paces away. He didn’t say a single word, but his fists clenched at his sides.

A crowd was gathering. The palace guards, tall, fierce panther warriors in dark armor, formed a perimeter around the entrance. But beyond them, dozens of nobles and citizens had gathered, all wearing traditional panther attire.

Karina took them in. The men wore loose, flowing white wraps draped over their broad chests. They adorned themselves with heavy gold necklaces, armbands, and jewel-encrusted belts. Some wore dark blue or green sashes, their long dark hair braided with gold rings. The women wore elegant halter tops and high-slit skirts, their hair flowing freely, their jewelry glittering like captured starlight.

It’s like walking into an ancient fantasy painting, Karina thought, her eyes scanning the sea of beautiful, dark-skinned people.

All so beautiful.

One noblewoman, tall, regal, with long wine hair and a confident smile, stepped forward. She wore a deep teal halter neckpiece that left her toned stomach bare, a golden belt slung low on her hips, and white armbands circling her biceps. She bowed her head at Leonidas.

"Your Majesty, are you alright? Did you truly ride a horse all the way from the border?"

He smiled. "I am perfectly fine. The journey was long, but we made it safely."

Another man stepped forward, his voice booming with enthusiasm. "All hail the Empress of Zyleria!"

The crowd erupted. "All hail the Empress! Hail the King! Hail the Prince!"

Valen shrank closer to Karina’s skirts, his ears flattening.

But before the cheers could settle, a figure emerged from the palace doors.

He was striking. Blonde, a stark contrast to the sea of dark hair around him. His hair was a mess of pale, wavy strands, falling artfully over his forehead. His skin was tan, his eyes a piercing green. He wore an elaborate deep navy and gold open jacket over a bare chest, draped with chains of sapphire and gold. His smile was bright, and looked too manufactured for Karina’s liking.

He strode toward Karina confidently.

"Welcome, Your Imperial Majesty," he said, his voice smooth like syrup. He took her hand, lifted it to his lips, and pressed a lingering kiss to her knuckles. "Shadow’s Edge is honored to have you."

Karina felt a vein throb in her forehead. Flirt.

She pulled her hand back gracefully. "And you are?"

The blonde man straightened, his smile never wavering. "Rafael, Second Commander of Shadow’s Edge and Lord of the Eastern Marches. I serve at the pleasure of His Majesty."

He turned to Leonidas, who was glaring at him with the intensity of a thousand suns. "My King. You look... rugged. Did you truly ride a horse?"

"Shut up, Rafael," Leonidas growled.

Rafael’s smile only widened. He turned to Sophie next, taking her hand and kissing it with equal charm. "And who is this radiant flower?"

Sophie’s face turned the color of her hair. "I—I’m Lady Sophie Dubois, lady-in-waiting to Her Majesty!"

"Charmed," Rafael purred.

Then, his eyes fell on Valen.

"Oh! Prince Valen!" Rafael exclaimed, his voice dropping into a gentle, almost sickly sweet tone. He crouched down, extending a hand to the small boy. "It is an honor to have you here, little prince. Shadow’s Edge is your home, after all."

Valen stared at Rafael’s outstretched hand. Then, with a speed that surprised everyone, he lunged forward and bit Rafael’s fingers.

"YOWCH!" Rafael yanked his hand back, shaking it. "You little—!"

Valen had already scrambled backward, hiding completely behind Karina’s skirt, his small claws peeking out.

Karina almost burst into laughter right there and then, but she bit her lip. Nice one, Valen!

A snicker echoed from the crowd. A young nobleman, a panther with a sleek braid and a mocking grin, covered his mouth.

"Lord Rafael," the nobleman drawled. "Bested by a six-year-old. Truly, your reputation precedes you."

Rafael shot him a glare, but his smile remained fixed. "Children are... spirited."

Leonidas let out a long, weary sigh. He pinched the bridge of his nose, looking like he was two seconds away from shifting into his beast form and hunting down everyone in the courtyard.

"Enough," he barked. The crowd fell silent. He turned to a group of female servants, panther women in elegant dark grey dresses. "Take the Empress and the Prince to the southern guest quarters. Immediately."

"Yes, Your Majesty!" They bowed deeply.

Leonidas looked at Karina. His eyes lingered on her for a brief moment, searching, questioning, wanting, before he looked away.

"The Empress will be with us for some days," he announced to the crowd. "She will be treated with the highest respect and courtesy. Is that understood?"

A murmur rippled through the noblemen and women. Surprise. Curiosity. A few exchanged sharp glances.

But no one dared argue with the Panther King.

"Welcome to Shadow’s Edge, Your Imperial Majesty," the head servant said softly, gesturing toward the palace doors. "Please, follow us."

Karina took Valen’s hand. He was still gripping her skirt, but he slowly let out a breath.

She squeezed his fingers.

As she walked past Rafael, the blonde man gave her a wink.

Karina ignored him.

But she made a mental note: Rafael. Charming. Dangerous. And definitely not on my side.
