"Cheshire," she whispered, barely moving her lips. "What can I exchange for 50 points? Something that will impress a six-year-old boy."

Karina carefully shifted Valen to one side and reached into the folds of her gown. Her fingers brushed against something cold and hard, and she pulled out two massive, swirling rainbow lollipops. They were nearly the size of her head, with vibrant stripes of pink, blue, yellow, and green.

Valen’s eyes were still fixed on the floor, but his ears perked up slightly.

Gotcha.

"What’s that?" he mumbled, not looking at her.

Karina held up one of the lollipops, letting the light catch its shiny surface. "It’s a special kind of sweet," she said casually. "I’ve never seen anything like it in this world. It’s called a... well, I don’t actually know what it’s called. But I have a feeling it’s delicious."

Valen’s gaze flickered to the lollipop, then away. "I don’t want it."

"Are you sure?" Karina waved it gently, and a faint, fruity scent wafted through the air. "It smells like strawberries. And blueberries. And... is that watermelon?"

Valen’s ears twitched again. His small nose wrinkled as he caught the scent.

"Go away," he muttered weakly.

"You know," Karina said thoughtfully, "I was planning to eat both of these myself. They look so good. But I suppose I could share. Just this once."

Valen’s resolve was visibly crumbling. His purple eyes kept darting to the lollipop, then away, then back again. The internal struggle playing out on his face was almost comical.

"I said no," he repeated, but the protest was half-hearted at best.

"Okay, suit yourself." Karina unwrapped the lollipop, making sure the crinkling paper drew his attention. She brought it to her lips and took a small, exaggerated lick.

Her eyes widened. "Oh my god," she breathed. "This is amazing."

Valen’s ears perked up all the way.

"It’s like... strawberries and cream and magic all mixed together. Mmm. So good."

"Stop it," Valen said, but his voice was trembling.

Karina held the lollipop out to him. "Just one taste. If you don’t like it, I’ll leave you alone. Promise."

Valen stared at the lollipop like it was a trap. But the sweet scent was irresistible, and his stomach let out an embarrassingly loud growl.

His face flushed.

"Here," Karina said gently, pushing the lollipop closer. "Just try it."

Hesitantly, Valen leaned forward and took a tiny lick.

His eyes went wide.

"Oh," he breathed. "Oh."

"Good, right?"

He didn’t answer. Instead, he grabbed the lollipop with both hands and started licking furiously, his small tongue darting across the rainbow surface. His ears were perked up, his tail slowly starting to wag behind him.

Karina watched, her heart swelling with warmth.

Victory.

"Alright, alright, I see you like it," she said, laughing softly. "There’s another one here if you want it."

Valen paused mid-lick, his eyes darting to the second lollipop in her hand. He looked at her, suspicion warring with desire.

"If I go with you," he said slowly, "will there be more?"

Valen nodded, his expression deadly serious. "More of these. And other things. Will there be?"

"Absolutely," Karina said, her voice soft. "I’ll make sure you have all the sweets you could ever want. I promise."

Valen was silent for a long moment. Then, very quietly, he said, "Fine. I’ll go."

He snatched the second lollipop from her hand before she could react, clutching both treats to his chest like precious treasures. He didn’t smile. He didn’t hug her. But he didn’t run away either, and Karina considered that a win.

"Wait."

She paused, glancing back. Valen had stopped his assault on the lollipops and was staring at her with a curious expression. His purple eyes flickered to her forehead, then away, then back again.

"What happened to your head?" he asked flatly.

Karina blinked. "Huh?"

"The bump." He pointed with the lollipop. "Right there. In the middle. It’s red."

"Oh." Karina’s hand instinctively flew to her forehead, her cheeks flushing a red shade. "That’s... um..."

Oh god. Why is this so embarrassing?

She could feel the heat creeping up her neck. Here she was, trying to be a cool, competent Empress, and she had a giant red bump on her face like she had walked into a door. Which, technically, she had. Just... not a door. A chandelier. Which was arguably worse.

"It’s nothing," she said quickly, waving her hand dismissively. "Just a little... accident. I was distracted."

Valen raised one small eyebrow. "You walked into something, didn’t you?"

"Absolutely not," Karina lied, her voice pitched slightly too high. "I am an Empress. Empresses do not walk into things. We glide. Gracefully."

"You have a bump on your forehead," Valen stated bluntly. "That’s not very graceful."

Karina’s eye twitched. "Children are supposed to be seen and not heard, you know."

Valen shrugged, returning his attention to his lollipops. "Fine. Don’t tell me. I don’t care anyway."

Karina sighed, her shoulders slumping. "Fine. I walked into a chandelier. Are you happy now?"

Valen’s lips twitched. It wasn’t quite a smile, but it was close.

"That’s stupid," he said.

"Yes, well, I’m glad my humiliation amuses you." She ruffled his hair, ignoring his annoyed swat. "Now, finish your sweets and get some rest. We leave in three days."

She swept out of the room, her face still burning with embarrassment.
