My Wife Is a Scientist
218. Oshun vs. Karl II
Karl was getting tired. The fight was getting worse for KARL. The crater that had once been a garden in Carlisle had become an arena.
That is to say that no one could ever pretend the Super Ring of the Super Primordial Black Hole would allow the first phase of the first battle to remain private.
The thing is, this love cannot pretend it does not include the moment every watching power across the gradas leans forward to see whether the open question can bleed.
Maybe, he could use something against her.Other myths hold that Oshun is one of the wives of Shango, the god of thunder. She is commonly described as the favourite of all orishas by Olodumare, because of her beauty and sensuality. In yet another Yoruba story, Oshun is depicted as the goddess who not only gives life but also takes it. When angered, Oshun may flood Earth or destroy crops by withholding her waters, thereby causing massive droughts. In one myth, Oshun is incensed by her devotees and sends down rain, nearly flooding the world. Yet once she has been appeased, Oshun saves Earth from destruction by calling back the water
The gradas formed themselves out of the wound in the multiverse.
Tier upon tier of Star-Grade spectators.
1-Star local spirits.
10-Star pantheon sovereigns.
20-Star primordial forces.
30-Star meta-narrative entities.
And above them all the silent pressure of the Super Primordial Black Hole grade itself.
They watched.
They spoke.
From the Gradas
A 12-Star Yoruba elder spirit leaned forward on a seat made of compressed river-stone.
Elder Spirit: Oshun has not fought like this since the first time a mortal tried to own the river.
Look at her.
One arm gone and she still smiles.
The Axis bleeds and she has not yet begun to sing.
A 18-Star Egyptian judgment-lord, Maat’s own distant cousin, adjusted the feather at his throat.
Judgment-Lord: The human wears a ring that should have unmade him.
Yet he stands.
Humiliation is coming.
I can taste it.
The river always humiliates those who doubt love.
A 25-Star Outer spectator from a superverse that had never known rivers only geometry whispered to its neighbor.
Geometry Spector: The open loops are fracturing under emotional load.
Fascinating.
He remembers the father.
Watch the ring when the memory peaks.
Oshun moved.
The remaining arm became a whip of pure Osun River current wrapped in peacock-feather blades.
She did not aim for a clean kill.
She aimed for the wound already open in Karl’s chest and the deeper wound behind it.
The strike landed.
Karl’s left side opened from ribs to hip.
Super Ring light and mortal blood sprayed across the crater.
The force drove him to one knee.
Oshun did not let him rise.
She stepped in close —closer than any goddess of love should need to step and drove her forehead against his with the intimacy of a lover who has decided to break the beloved.
Oshun (voice low, almost tender): You doubted her.
You stood in a garden and asked whether the first honest hand was love or need.
I am the river that answers that question with blood.
Kneel properly.
She brought her knee up into the open wound.
Karl’s vision went white.
The Super Ring flared in reflex and still could not fully close the injury.
For the first time since the Super Primordial Black Hole had accepted him, Karl tasted true humiliation the kind that comes when a domain you once respected decides to treat you like a student who has failed the simplest lesson.
Oshun: Look at them.
The gradas.
They are learning what happens when the open question forgets that love is not a theory.
The pain dragged a memory out of Karl the way a river drags a body downstream.
He remembered Ryan.
Not the god-slaying, tenth-dimension, Scarlet-King-breaking father.
The quieter moment.
Ryan standing in the residual dark at the bottom of Hell after silencing Kaos, one hand on Karl’s shoulder, voice even and almost bored.
Ryan: You’re still standing.
Good.
The open loops held.
Mercy is a choice, not a cage.
Remember that the next time someone rewrites the upper limits without asking.
Karl had nodded then.
He had believed the lesson was about restraint.
Now, with Oshun’s river-blood and his own mixing in the crater, he understood the other half of the lesson.
Ryan had stepped in front of Kaos for him.
Ryan had allowed himself to be put to sleep by the primordial goddess Sleep so that the son could keep standing.
The father had paid in advance.
Karl’s voice came out raw, blood on his teeth.
Karl: My father stood between me and the oldest absence.
He let himself be closed so I could remain open.
You want to humiliate the doubt.
Fine.
But you will learn what a son remembers when the river tries to drown the memory of the man who taught him how to stand.
The Super Ring answered the memory.
Not with mercy.
With the full, unsoftened Will to Power that Ryan had once forged into a ring and then left in a boy’s hand.
Karl rose.
The wound in his side remained open.
He simply refused to let it matter.
Across the gradas the Yoruba host could not remain silent.
Ogun (iron voice, watching his sister-river bleed gold): She is teaching him.
Good.
The forge does not mind if the blade screams while it is being shaped.
Shango (thunder low, almost approving): The human bleeds prettily.
But look at the ring.
It is starting to remember the father.
This will not stay one-sided.
Yemoja (maternal, pained): Child of the river, do not lose yourself in the teaching.
The Axis is not a mortal who will thank you for the lesson.
He is a man whose first honest anchor was stolen.
He will burn the river if he must.
Eshu (laughing at every crossroads at once): I opened the path for this fight.
I did not say the path would be kind.
Keep dancing, Oshun.
The humiliation is not finished.
Neither is the remembering.
Oshun heard them.
She smiled through gold blood and came again.
This exchange was pure Record-of-Ragnarok iconography made flesh.
God and challenger trading not only blows but declarations.
Every impact a statement.
Every wound a verse.
Oshun’s peacock-feather edge opened Karl’s cheek to the bone.
Karl’s Super Ring-enhanced fist collapsed her remaining shoulder.
They staggered apart, both ruined, both still standing.
Oshun: You fight like a man who has already lost.
That is why the gradas cannot look away.
Humiliation is the first teacher.
Bleed and learn.
Karl: I am learning.
I am learning that the river that came to correct my doubt is willing to drown the memory of the father who stood in front of Kaos for me.
I am learning that love without mercy is still a weapon.
And I am learning that I will not kneel.
He stepped forward.
One step.
Two.
Crossing the distance with the same deliberate pace Ryan had once used when walking toward Outer Gods who thought themselves beyond consequence.
Far above the crater, in a fragment of probability that still obeyed Ultra-Intellect observation, Sophia Hirotomi Alpha Chronos and Ananke watched.
Sophia’s violet-gold eyes tracked every drop of blood.
Sophia: She is humiliating him on purpose.
The river is forcing the doubt into the open so it can be drowned.
He is allowing it because the memory of Ryan is still more important than the pain.
Ananke (tall, calm, necessity incarnate): Necessity is watching both of them.
The father paid in advance.
The son is only now understanding the price.
If Oshun pushes much further the Super Ring will stop distinguishing between teaching and erasure.
Sophia: I know.
I am already calculating the moment I will have to intervene.
Not yet.
He needs this memory to finish forming.
He needs to remember what Ryan did so that the open question can grow teeth sharp enough for what comes next.
Ananke’s hand rested briefly on Sophia’s shoulder.
Ananke: Then we watch.
And we prepare to catch whatever is left when the first phase ends.
Oshun’s next surge of river-force lifted Karl off his feet and slammed him into the far wall of the wound.
Bones that had been reinforced by one hundred million years of training still cracked.
The Super Ring kept him conscious.
Oshun followed, gold blood pouring from both ruined shoulders, and pinned him there with a knee against the open wound in his side.
Oshun (face close, voice almost intimate): Remember this feeling.
This is what the doubt costs when it is allowed to speak.
This is what the river does to those who cannot decide whether the first hand was love or need.
Karl’s bloodied hand rose.
Not to strike.
To rest against the Super Ring.
He remembered Ryan’s hand on his shoulder in the residual dark.
He remembered the quiet, almost bored voice saying that mercy was a choice, not a cage.
He remembered that the father had chosen to be put to sleep so the son could keep the loops open.
The memory became a crossing.
Karl’s forehead slammed into Oshun’s with the full gravity of the Super Primordial Black Hole behind it.
The sound was final.
Both of them dropped to the crater floor, tangled, bleeding, still conscious, still learning.
The gradas roared.
Not with approval.
With the pure, horrified delight of powers that had just watched a river goddess and the Axis teach each other the cost of an open question in the only language left to them.
Oshun, one-armed, both shoulders ruined, gold blood pooling beneath her, still smiled.
Oshun: First phase is not over.
Get up.
The humiliation is not finished.
Neither is the remembering.
Karl spat blood and rose to one knee.
The Super Ring burned like a star that had decided it would not collapse.
Karl: Then we continue.
My father stood in front of the oldest absence for me.
I will not kneel in a crater while his sleep is used as a weapon against the open question.
Come, river.
Teach.
I will teach back.
They met again in the center of the ruined garden.
The first phase of the first battle ground onward — bloody, talking, remembering, humiliating, iconic — while the gradas leaned so far forward that some of the lower Star-Grade seats began to crack under the weight of pure attention.
And somewhere in the larger dark, Sophia and Ananke continued to watch, calculating the exact moment the lesson would become too expensive for either side to keep paying.
