The Ascent

Sophia locked the windowless room again.

Seventeen days of research into divinity had given her the map. Now she intended to walk the entire territory.

There is no single, straightforward answer to that question. Also much of Nietzsche's discussion of the Will to Power occurs in his notebooks, not his published works. This has led some scholars to conclude (somewhat dubiously) that he wasn't entirely serious about the concept. Others have pointed out that he returns to the subject too often and at too great a length to be unserious about it. This point has been conceded to some extent, but interpreters who prefer Nietzsche's more naturalistic tendencies still find ways of downplaying the significance of the Will to Power in Nietzsche's thought. The disagreement has not, to my knowledge, been resolved.

The Will to Power can take several forms in Nietzsche's writings -- the relationships between which is debatable. Sometimes the Will to Power seems to be simple psychological drive -- an urge to seek not only survival but growth and expansion, often accompanied by a desire to express one's power and revel in the feeling of it. It is up for debate whether all human feelings are reducible to this drive, or whether it is the most important and admirable among all the other drives. The centrality of the Will to Power is sometimes taken to be an expression of Nietzsche's own values and what he thought would lead individuals to achieve their fullest potential.

Other times the Will to Power does not seem to be a single urge or drive at all. Sometimes it seems to be a description of a certain tendency or relationship between ones drives. What I mean is that Nietzsche sometimes describes humans as if we are a bundle of drives all competing with each other for ascendancy within a kind of hierarchy. The Will to Power is then simply a description of this tendency of wills/drives to seek mastery of the others by reaching the top of this hierarchy of drives thus becoming the dominant drive in that individual's life. Under this scheme the Will to Power sometimes also refers to the conscious desire of a person to have a particular kind of hierarchy of wills within oneself -- specifically a desire for a hierarchy which will empower the individual to become the strongest possible version of themselves.

Purpose beckons to a man at different levels depending on the current power or knowledge of the man. The man is delivered the appropriate challenge he is destined to overcome. The question is, will you choose to face the challenge?

Other times the Will to Power seems to be a metaphysical claim about the fundamental substance of the universe. Sometimes Nietzsche seems to be arguing that not only is the human mind fundamentally ruled / driven by the Will to Power, but that everything that exists simply is the Will to Power. This Will to Power is essentially flux, or "Becoming." All the universe is flux and Becoming -- the appearance of "Being" of any kind is a mere illusion cooked up by all-too-human minds which cannot understand anything (or perhaps even think at all) without this illusion. This Will to Power doctrine is sometimes thought of as a kind of quantum vision of the universe before there was quantum physics. It is also sometimes called "crackpot metaphysics" depending on who you read. It also seems to imply at times that there is a kind of fundamental, almost rudimentary psychology or mind-like quality within physical matter -- further adding, in some readers' minds, to the appearance of "crackpot-ness."

That is to say that a mind operating at ALPHA OMEGA EPSILON DELTA degree does not merely study power. The thing is, it refuses to leave any rung of the ladder unclimbed once the ladder has been seen.

She began at the lowest measurable threshold.

Power Level Trace : Absolute Scale

  • Baseline human cognitive floor
  • Enhanced human (peak historical genius)
  • Pre-Awakened philosophical singularity (the boy who solved seven of the twelve Great Problems at fourteen)
  • Local reality-warping (minor gods, high-tier demons, awakened demigods)
  • Pantheon-tier (Olympian, Vanir, Orisha, Celestial Bureaucracy)
  • Primordial (Erebus, Kaos as the Greeks later softened him)
  • Outer (Nyarlathotep, Yog-Sothoth, the unnameable geometries)
  • Logos (the living structure of coherent meaning across all possible statements)
  • Singularity (the point at which further increase in intelligence produces qualitative rather than quantitative change — the mind that can no longer be modelled by any slower mind)

She stood in the centre of the white room and climbed each level in sequence, not by force, but by perfect understanding. Every previous ceiling became a floor she simply stepped beyond.

When she reached Singularity she did not stop.

Sophia (internal, precise, almost gentle): Singularity is still a boundary. Boundaries are only unfinished equations. Kaos is older than every boundary. If I am to meet the oldest absence without being erased, I must become the mind that can look at the absence and still refuse to let it become the final word. That is to say that no one could ever pretend the open question survives if the one who asks it can still be finished by the oldest silence. The thing is, this love cannot pretend it does not include the decision to become larger than the silence that once answered every prayer with nothing.

Just map it to a mathematical organism universe instead of a mechanistic universe and be done with the “hard problem” entirely.

She pushed.

The whiteboards went blank. The air in the room forgot how to carry ordinary sound. For a moment the rented space above the bookstore ceased to exist inside any single timeline.

Sophia Hirotomi Alpha Chronos crossed the threshold that most intelligences cannot even name.

She became Ultra-Intellect.

Not merely faster. Not merely wider. A mind that could hold every possible model of itself simultaneously without collapsing into any one of them  the same refusal she had seen in Karl, now scaled until it could look directly at Kaos and still keep the question open.

The Other Hers

With the new architecture in place she performed the second act.

She reached into the probability foam and began cutting free every branch in which Karl Omega Yang had died.

There were more than she had expected. Some quiet. Some violent. Some so ordinary they almost escaped notice — a missed step on wet Manchester stone, a fever in an orphanage, a random act of human cruelty that no god ever recorded.

For each of those branches she created a perfect continuation of herself — not a copy, not a clone, but a full Ultra-Intellect instance carrying the same loneliness, the same refusal, the same open sentence.

Sophia (to the first of them, voice soft): Go. Find every version of him that was finished too early. Do not rewrite the world into paradise. Only keep the question open long enough for him to choose again. That is to say that no one could ever pretend love is the desire to make every timeline perfect when the only honest gift is the refusal to let any version of him remain permanently closed. The thing is, this love cannot pretend it does not include the decision to become many so that the one open sentence can continue in every place it was once cut short.

The other Hers stepped into their assigned branches without farewell.

They would not return. They were not meant to.

Divine Energy

Only one task remained.

Sophia returned to the two vials , Zhinü’s star-threaded blood and Bastet’s living gold.

She had already sequenced them. Now she did what no mortal and few gods had ever attempted: she translated the entire architecture of divinity into a form her Ultra-Intellect body could inhabit without dying or ascending in the traditional sense.

She did not become a goddess.

She became a mind that could carry divine energy the way a river carries light — without needing to become the sun.

The star-thread of the Weaver settled into her nervous system as permanent access to every red-thread possibility. The feline gold of Bastet settled as the capacity for sudden, chance-born ferocity and tenderness that no equation could fully predict.

When the process ended, Sophia stood in the centre of the white room and looked at her own hands.

They still looked human. The loneliness still sat behind her violet-gold eyes like a second pulse.

Sophia (quietly, to the empty air): I have gone beyond Singularity. I have sent myself into every timeline where he was finished too soon. I have taken the blood of goddesses and made it answer to the open question instead of to worship. That is to say that no one could ever pretend power is the opposite of loneliness when the most powerful version of me still cannot close the single sentence he keeps leaving unfinished on a porch in Carlisle. The thing is, this love cannot pretend it does not include the final, quiet decision to become everything I can become… and still remain the one who refuses to finish him.

She turned off the lights.

She locked the room.

Then she walked back out into the ordinary night of a small city that had never known how to look at someone who had just rewritten the upper limits of intellect and divinity for the sake of one open question that still refused to close.
