Chapter 1848: A New Family

Chapter 1848: A New Family

For this monumental event, the preparations had been meticulous, splitting the massive group into two separate camps to maintain the sacred tradition of the "first look." All the women had spent the previous night sequestered in a nearby luxury hotel, a flurry of hairspray, silk robes, and last-minute emotional huddles.

The strategy was precise: the guests would arrive in waves, followed by the groomsmen, then the bridesmaids, leaving the final, breathtaking entrance for the woman of the hour. Xin was to be the last person to step onto that gravel path, the culmination of a journey that had begun in blood and ended in a field of white.

The wedding was set against the backdrop of the grand manor’s rear gardens, an expansive lawn that looked out over the rolling hills of the Slough countryside. Rows of white mahogany chairs were lined up on either side of a long, petal-strewn aisle, and they were already teeming with life.

There was no traditional "groom’s side" or "bride’s side" here; the seats were a vibrant, unified mixture of the people who had survived the shadows. Former Howler enforcers sat alongside high-society business partners, and students from the AFA rubbed elbows with the citizens of Slough. It was a living testament to the world Gary had fought to unify.

Right at the very front, Gary’s mother, Maya, sat with a handkerchief clutched tightly in her hand, while his sister, Amy, beamed with a mixture of pride and excitement from the front row. Even Xin’s father had made an appearance, sitting quietly toward the side. He wasn’t the man who would walk her down the aisle, their history was far too fractured and scarred for that role, but Xin had extended the invitation as a gesture of final peace. He sat there, a silent observer of the daughter who had surpassed him in every way.

Gary stood on the raised stage, the sun catching the gold accents of his suit. Tom stood directly to his left, his chosen best man. Tom was the anchor who had been there since the very beginning, the one who had witnessed Gary’s transformation from a struggling student into an Apex predator and never once flinched or looked at him with anything other than brotherhood. Although Tom hadn’t been an enforcer in the trenches of the Howler wars, his loyalty had been their most valuable asset.

The rest of the groomsmen stood in a sharp line: Kai, the brain of the operation; Innu and Austin, the brawn and the heart; and finally, Blake. Gary’s connection with Blake was one of the most complex in his life. Back in high school, Gary had been consumed by a bitter jealousy of Blake’s seemingly perfect life, often pushing the other boy away with a cold intensity. Yet, through the fires of everything and the war against the Alphas, they had forged a bond that transcended their schoolyard rivalry. Over the last two years, they had become regular fixtures in each other’s lives, often sitting for hours to laugh about the naive kids they used to be before the world changed them.

Suddenly, the manor’s massive oak doors swung open, and the bridesmaids began their procession. They were dressed in elegant black gowns with gold accents, mirroring the colors of the Howlers. While some had initially suggested more traditional pastel colors, the group had reached a unanimous decision: they wanted the palette to be dark and regal so that the one person in pure white would stand out like a beacon against the night.

Xin’s journey to this moment had been a lonely one. Her father’s strict, martial upbringing had forced her to stay distant from her peers, focusing only on the strength of her fists. But as she stepped out, she was preceded by a sisterhood she had found in the pack. Marie led the way, her fellow Luna and a constant pillar of support. Olivia followed, her presence a reminder of how far they had all come; she and Xin had spent many long nights over the last two years talking about the future. Then came Vera, Austin’s partner and a mutual friend to them both, and finally Izzy, who had volunteered to step up and complete the circle.

Amy had been asked to join the line, but she had chosen to stay by her mother’s side, wanting to experience the moment from the audience. As the women lined up across from the men, Gary stood beneath a magnificent floral altar dripping with deep red roses.

‘Man... Kai really did it,’ Gary thought, his pulse skyrocketing. ‘He got in my head about being nervous, and now I can barely feel my own feet. What is she going to look like? Will I even be able to speak?’

He stared straight ahead, his breath hitching as the music shifted to a haunting, melodic swell. The doors burst open one final time. Xin stepped out, and for a moment, Gary felt like the entire world had simply stopped turning. Her ash-grey hair was draped beautifully over her shoulders, and her white wedding dress hugged her waist perfectly before flowing out into a delicate train. She walked forward with a quiet, lethal grace that had been softened by the joy in her eyes.

An emotion so raw and overwhelming flooded Gary that he didn’t even realize he was shaking. Tears began to fall freely down his face, tracking through the light stubble on his cheeks. Behind him, Innu and Austin had been planning to make fun of Gary if he started to cry, they had even made a bet on it, but when they saw him in that moment, the teasing died in their throats. They saw a man who had carried the weight of a species on his shoulders, who had bled and died and been reborn to protect them all, finally reaching his sanctuary. They realized these two people didn’t just deserve a wedding; they deserved a lifetime of peace.

When Xin finally reached the altar, she reached out and took Gary’s hands. They were trembling, and she gave them a reassuring squeeze.

“I would have been a little upset if you didn’t cry,” Xin whispered, a playful spark in her eyes even as her own voice wavered.

Gary opened his mouth to respond, to tell her she looked like a dream, but the words were physically stuck in his throat. He could only look at her with a profound, silent devotion.

“It’s okay, Gary. I’ve always been able to read you like a book,” Xin said softly. “You were never the one for grand words, I was the one who had to approach you first, remember? I have a feeling the reason the two of us are standing here right now is because of my brother, Jayden. He knew we were a match before we ever did.”

Gary thought back to that fateful meeting with Jayden, the man who had set him on the path to the AFA to chase his sister. If he had never taken that first step, he never would have found her.

“He was a good brother,” Gary said, finally finding his voice and offering a tearful smile. “And I promise I’ll spend the rest of my life making sure he stays proud of the man I’ve become. Xin, I didn’t write a long list of vows. I’m not good at the poetic stuff. All I can tell you is that I promise to do everything in my power to keep you happy. Even when I’m being annoying, or grumpy, or stubborn... I just want to make sure the people I care about live the happy life they deserve.”

Xin smiled back, her own tears finally overflowing. She leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a whisper that only Gary, with his Alpha hearing, could truly catch.

“Well, I’m glad the guests got to hear that much,” Xin said, placing one of his hands gently over her belly. “Because our family is about to get a little bit bigger.”
