Chapter 1621: The Next Step
Chapter 1621: The Next Step
Galdark had explained a few details, details he had prepared in his mind on the way here. He had decided long before stepping into Jack’s office that he couldn’t mention Steve or Steve’s Pack. Not yet.
If he did, he feared it would cause a rift between the two groups, one that had been stable for a relatively long time. To disrupt that peace now, over three unfamiliar Werewolves, felt like the wrong move.
So instead, he stuck to the original story, the one he and Bluebird agreed on.
The three Werewolves had come from the countryside. They had heard rumors about the Red Wing Kingdom, but they had not known that the Werewolf Pack here was separate from the kingdom’s official army. While Galdark was traveling for his duties, he had run into them by coincidence. They seemed genuine. They wanted a place to belong.
And it was Gary, specifically, who wanted Jack to take them in.
Galdark knew the truth, of course. Jack and Bluebird were close. Many of the older legends, the ones warriors still whispered about, had once been comrades. Even if they rarely met now, weighed down by responsibilities, families, and titles, they still trusted one another deeply.
That trust extended to Galdark as well. It was why he trusted Bluebird, and why he believed Jack would trust him too.
“I see,” Jack replied at last. His voice was calm, steady. “Well, I see no problem with letting them stay here. Give them a place to live. Make sure they feel relaxed. For the time being, though, it would be best if they stayed here and did not explore outside the city.”
“You mean not go out on quests? Or not leave this area of ours?” Galdark asked, genuinely surprised. Jack had been acting strange lately. A small part of him expected Jack to simply refuse them altogether... yet he agreed without hesitation.
“For now,” Jack answered, “I just want to keep an eye on everyone. And it is easier if those three remain where they can be observed.”
Finally, Jack stood up from his chair. His legs tingled uncomfortably, he had been sitting far too long.
“I need to greet everyone anyway. So I might as well say hello to them as well.”
Down below, the trio had begun sparring with the Red Wing Werewolves.
They started with weapon drills. Gary, Kai, and Lupus quickly realized something, that these Werewolves weren’t like the knights-in-training they had been sparring with before.
These fighters were veterans.
Every strike was measured. Every block carried weight. Every motion was reinforced by Qi.
Gary and the others were pushed harder than expected. Their blades clattered against axes and spears. Their movements met resistance at every turn.
It didn’t take long for them to notice, they were on even footing.
The Red Wing Werewolves weren’t mocking them. In fact, their eyes widened in interest. But for Gary, Lupus, and Kai, a strange frustration settled in their chests.
They had trained so hard. They had unlocked the secrets of Qi. They assumed they were ahead of others now.
Yet here they were, meeting fighters who were every bit as strong.
It meant one thing very clearly.
The Red Wing Pack is stronger than Steve’s.
If a war did happen between them, Steve’s side wouldn’t stand a chance.
After several sparring rounds, they finally stepped back and requested a break. No one teased them. No one mocked them for stopping. The Red Wing Pack simply continued their own training, rotating training partners.
The three walked toward the edge of the training field, giving themselves the excuse of needing to watch a bit.
In truth, it was their chance to talk.
“We’re far enough away, right?” Gary asked in a low voice. “We can say what we need to?”
“As long as we keep it in whispers, it should be fine,” Kai replied.
Lupus exhaled sharply.
“So you guys are as confused as I am, right? What the heck do we do about that quest?” he said. “So much for what you said earlier, Kai. You were the one talking big about not getting involved, just watching so we could see how history played out.”
He gestured aggressively at the quest window still hovering in his mind.
“Well, the system doesn’t want that! It wants us to pick a side!”
Kai’s eyebrows pressed together. He hated it too. It was one thing to observe, to learn what happened. It was something else entirely to be forced to influence it.
Because that meant they weren’t just spectators anymore.
It meant they were part of the cause.
“If we choose a side now,” Kai said, “it’s almost guaranteed the Packs will go to war. And whichever side we stand with... we might push things even further.”
Lupus crossed his arms.
“So? Then what do we do? We can’t just stand here forever. The system demands an answer.”
“Before we decide anything,” Kai replied, voice low and firm, “we need to find out what’s happening with Jack. That is the key.”
He looked in the direction Galdark had gone.
“Once we find that out, we might understand the real reason behind this conflict. Right now, we’re acting blind. We are at the system’s mercy.”
Gary nodded slowly.
“And since we have no idea what the next quest will be after choosing... we need information first.”
Kai continued:
“We have to learn everything we can. What exactly is happening in this camp? What changed Jack? What’s waiting on the other side of this choice?”
Their eyes all met.
They understood the truth.
The next step wasn’t picking Steve or Jack.
The next step...
Was uncovering the reason they had to choose at all.
