Chapter 1391: A Power Increase

Chapter 1391: A Power Increase

At this time of night, on a long stretch of road barely lit by flickering lamps, there were rarely any vehicles except the occasional delivery truck. That’s why, the moment Austin and Innu spotted the incoming fleet of vehicles, their instincts screamed one name.

“It’s Lupus,” Austin muttered, gripping the handlebars tighter.

The vehicles themselves were mostly large black SUVs, each one heavily tinted to the point where even the moonlight couldn’t reveal who might be sitting inside. But what was more alarming than the fleet’s appearance… was the sheer number of them. Judging from the headlights approaching like an endless river, this wasn’t just a convoy, this was an army.

“Am I crazy,” Innu said, leaning forward on the back of the bike, “or is that like… a hundred freaking cars coming our way? If it’s five people per car, that’s like five hundred! Five hundred werewolves?!”

Austin’s eyes didn’t leave the road. “I thought we’d taken out most of them during the fight with the Altered Hunters. Was that not the case? Was Lupus holding back, or were they just holed up at the castle… or those other Gardens we didn’t even get around to attacking?”

The realization hit like a chill wind. This wasn’t over. Not even close.

“Call Gary,” Austin ordered sharply. “Deliver the news. Ask if they’re seeing any movement from other sides. If this is the only direction they’re attacking from, then maybe this is just one straight battle. But if so… it’s one we didn’t plan for.”

Innu nodded quickly and reached into his jacket for his phone. But the moment he started to dial, his instincts flared.

A ripple in the air to his right.

Without thinking, Innu drew one of his twin axes from his back and swung. A sharp arc of energy slashed through the night sky toward him. The axe clashed with the energy line, and even though he used his full Qi, the force of the impact was enough to tilt the entire bike.

Austin slammed his foot down, grinding against the road to stop them from toppling over.

When he looked up, his eyes narrowed. Shadows emerged from the roadside forest, fast-moving, powerful shapes.

Werewolves.

“We’re not the only ones who thought of sending a scout team ahead,” Austin said, watching as more figures appeared from both sides of the road.

“Well, what are you waiting for?!” Innu shouted. “Drive! We can’t take them all on, if we stay, the main force’ll catch up! Drive this thing, or I will!”

With a sharp twist of the handle, the bike roared to life. The back tire screeched against the concrete before launching them forward. But the werewolves weren’t about to let their prey escape so easily.

They gave chase, running on all fours, eyes glowing in the darkness. Some of them didn’t need to get close. From the rearview mirror, Innu saw their fingers twitch.

And then, they started flicking their fingernails.

Lethal, razor-sharp nails flew through the air from multiple directions, curving unnaturally with deadly intent. Even if Innu swung his axe, he couldn’t defend against all of them.

Worse still, some of the nails were aimed directly at the bike.

Innu raised his free hand and clenched his fist. The nails stopped in mid-air, suspended as though caught in invisible wires.

With a snarl, he pushed his energy outward.

The nails reversed course, shooting back toward their senders. The counterattack took the werewolves by surprise, piercing into fur and flesh, making several of them stumble.

But they weren’t normal enemies. They were werewolves, and pain didn’t stop them.

They kept coming.

“I didn’t know you could do that with your powers,” Austin said through clenched teeth.

“I’ve been working on more than just my Qi,” Innu replied, confidence in his voice. “This ability, it’s getting stronger. I’m not about to fall behind all of you just because I was out for a while. I’m back, and it’s time everyone remembered why I’m number two… and you’re number three!”

Another shadow got too close. Innu pulled out his second axe, one black, one white, and hurled it with a spin. It spun like a whirlwind, slicing through the air before embedding itself deep into a charging werewolf’s chest, sending the creature tumbling.

Stretching out his hand, the axe dislodged itself and zipped back into his grasp. The moment it returned, Innu felt a surge of Qi refill his body thanks to the weapon’s special effect.

‘Man, this brings me back…’ Innu thought. ‘Back to when Blake and I were sprinting through that mall… Why are the Lupus pack always this terrifying?’

Gripping both axes now, he twirled them once, then hurled them together.

They spun in opposite arcs, creating a slicing crescent in the air. Several werewolves dived out of the way, but not all were fast enough. A few got grazed. A few went down.

The axes flew back into Innu’s hands, perfectly timed.

“That should slow them down for now,” he muttered. With one axe slung over his shoulder, he used telekinesis to pull his phone from his pocket and float it to his hand, pressing dial.

As the ringtone buzzed, Austin noticed something that made his stomach twist. The SUVs, they weren’t cruising anymore. Their engines had roared to life, and now they were speeding toward them, fast.

The call finally connected.

“Gary,” Innu said, his voice low and serious, “Lupus and his group… they’re coming. They’re headed for Slough, just like we guessed. From the expected route, yeah. I hope it’s the only one, makes your job a bit easier. And don’t worry about us. Austin and I… we’ll make it back in one piece.”

Before Gary could respond, Innu ended the call, letting the phone drift back into his pocket.

That’s when he saw it.

One of the SUVs gaining on them. And on top of it, someone had climbed out the window, now standing on the roof like it was flat ground.

Bow drawn. Arrow aimed.

Innu’s eyes widened.

“It’s him…”

The Ironfang.

Luzen.
