Chapter 62: Chapter 62: Isn’t This the Legal Channel?

’Huh?’

’What in the world?’

’Aren’t we on the crime channel here? How did we suddenly switch to the paranormal channel?’

Perhaps sensing Zoe Sawyer’s silence, Lily Golding’s voice grew frantic. "I’m not lying! I really saw it!

If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, why would I say something so absurd!"

Toward the end, Lily Golding’s voice started to break. She had really seen it.

Zoe Sawyer quickly tried to console her. "Lily, it’s not that I don’t believe you. It’s just so sudden, I didn’t know how to react.

When are you free? How about we meet up and talk? Maybe there’s another way to handle this!"

Lily Golding took a few deep breaths to calm herself, then arranged to meet with Zoe Sawyer that afternoon.

After hanging up, Sean Hughes, who was sitting next to her, patted her on the shoulder. "Do you need me to go with you?"

Before Zoe Sawyer could answer, Heath Hale spoke up. "I’ll go with Zoe. You two are a bit conspicuous right now, you’d draw too much attention."

Besides, those two often appeared in the public eye. Especially after the recently solved human skin case, they had both appeared publicly to receive commendations, making them far more likely to be recognized than Heath and Zoe.

Speaking of which, Zoe Sawyer couldn’t help but ask, "So, did you figure out their motive?"

Evan Keller raised an eyebrow and gave Zoe Sawyer a simplified explanation of what he was allowed to share. "We did. The main culprits are still not talking, but we’ve gotten a lot of information from the others."

Combined with our investigation, we’ve pieced together most of the truth.

"The reason they suddenly started making such a big scene was that their main clients are on the dark web. Some of them have rather extreme tastes and enjoy watching this sort of thing," Evan Keller explained vaguely.

After half a month of interrogations and investigations, they discovered that the number of missing people was even higher than they thought.

And it wasn’t just domestic. The situation was even more severe in some smaller neighboring countries.

Those who met certain physical criteria would become a wealthy person’s special "consultant," providing assistance whenever the magnate needed a "replacement."

The more attractive ones would be sent to a certain club for a high price, becoming playthings for the clientele.

The rest were the victims of this human skin case, providing entertainment for people with those special tastes.

The reason they suddenly exposed themselves to the public was that Ruby and her people were pissed that Zoe Sawyer’s group had ruined their "games" several times. They wanted to provoke the police, and if they could discredit the authorities’ credibility in the process, all the better.

They just never expected the police to have a secret weapon like Zoe Sawyer, someone with her special abilities who could pop up in the most unexpected places and deal them a heavy blow.

Of course, there were other, more important details involved, but those couldn’t be shared with Zoe Sawyer.

It wasn’t that they were wary of her, but that the details were too gruesome. Even battle-hardened forensic examiners and veteran detectives from the provincial bureau felt sick to their stomachs upon seeing it, let alone someone like Zoe, who had limited exposure to such things.

For the sake of her mental health, the chief had decided to keep that part from her.

Zoe Sawyer could tell Evan Keller and the others were holding something back, but she didn’t plan to press the issue.

As long as the criminals were caught and the abducted hostages were truly safe, that was enough.

「Soon, it was time for Zoe Sawyer’s meeting with Lily Golding.」

Zoe Sawyer and Heath Hale were already waiting in the boba tea shop, having chosen their seats strategically.

Heath Hale’s seat not only allowed him to protect Zoe Sawyer at all times but also gave him a clear view of the entire shop.

He pushed the boba tea the server brought over toward Zoe Sawyer, waiting with her for the person named Lily Golding to arrive.

Before long, a fashionably dressed girl walked over.

Her eyes lit up when she saw Zoe Sawyer in the corner, and she quickened her pace toward them.

"Zoe Sawyer! Long time no see!" Lily Golding sat down next to Zoe, excitedly linking arms with her.

The moment she appeared, Heath Hale sized her up from head to toe.

Her clothes were stylish, and her hair and makeup were meticulously done, but they couldn’t hide the dark circles under her eyes or the flash of exhaustion.

It looked like she hadn’t had a good rest in a very long time.

Zoe Sawyer also noticed something was off with her friend. Compared to the girl in college who disliked dressing up, the current Lily Golding was dazzling.

"Not so clumsy with your hands anymore, huh? Your makeup skills are amazing! And your fashion sense, your outfits are so well put-together. So much better than mine. When will I ever get the hang of it!" Zoe Sawyer patted Lily Golding’s hand, then glanced down at her own white T-shirt and long pants with a dejected tone.

If she had ever entertained the idea of dressing up before, that thought had vanished after she discovered her abilities.

The time it took to do makeup was better spent getting more sleep or training, lest she mess things up by running out of stamina while chasing a criminal or trying to escape.

Lily Golding pressed her lips into a smile but didn’t reply.

She was different from Zoe Sawyer. While Zoe didn’t like makeup, she was naturally beautiful. Lily, on the other hand, was merely cute. Not wearing makeup could be a real disadvantage at times.

"Alright, do you two remember why we’re here today?" Seeing that they were about to keep chatting, Heath Hale quickly interjected, pulling the conversation back on track.

Ahem...

Zoe Sawyer sat up straight, a little embarrassed. Seeing her good friend from college had made her get so caught up in chatting that she’d forgotten the real reason for their meeting.

"This is my friend, Heath Hale. Remember when you called and asked if I knew anyone from... you know? Well, this is him." Zoe Sawyer patted Heath Hale’s arm, introducing him with a grin.

If Zoe Sawyer had once been afraid of Heath Hale because of the intensity of his training, after spending this much time together, she now had a good grasp of how to handle him.

’Afraid?’

’At most, I’ll be a little timid when he adds extra training. I’m not scared of him any other time!’

Zoe Sawyer thought smugly, ’I guess you could say my courage has been trained up too!’

Lily Golding’s eyes brightened. She glanced around to make sure no one was paying attention to them, then leaned closer to Zoe Sawyer and whispered, "I know you don’t believe me, but I’m serious. I really saw a ghost!

And it’s not just me! A lot of my classmates have seen it too!"

’If I can have superpowers, maybe ghosts really do exist?’

’Even if this is fake, there might be something else hidden behind it.’

Contrary to what Lily Golding had expected, Zoe Sawyer pulled a notebook out of her bag and asked with a serious expression, "When and where did it happen? Was there anything unusual when you saw it? Was anyone else with you at the time?"

This barrage of questions left Lily Golding completely stunned.

’My old roommate... she really seems different now.’
