Chapter 60: Chapter 60: I Will Protect These Documents With My Life
"That’s definitely not a problem." Chief Lowe patted his chest, making a guarantee.
He couldn’t speak for other things, but with a confirmed location, his men could get there with all possible speed.
"Good. Then I’ll leave the rest to you all." Heath Hale nodded at them.
The group quickly made their decision.
Zoe Sawyer would take Sean Hughes and Heath Hale to the edge of the stronghold to hide, providing the location while also observing the situation on the other side in real-time.
The remaining two, Evan Keller and Barry Quinn, would move with the main force.
Once the decision was made, the group, with their roles clearly defined, quickly donned their gear.
They finally escorted Chief Lowe and his two companions out of the office. Then, under everyone’s watchful eyes, they stepped through the door and arrived in an area of unusually lush vegetation.
The moment they came out, Sean Hughes and Heath Hale quickly pulled Zoe Sawyer behind a large tree. They then took out a locator, turned it on, and transmitted the precise, detailed address to Evan Keller and the others.
They originally had a faster way of doing things: borrowing Zoe Sawyer’s ability to bring the hostages back through the "door."
But Barry Quinn’s experience had served as a warning. ’What if there are enemies hidden among them?’
’If we can’t identify them in time, we’ll expose Zoe Sawyer’s ability!’
They couldn’t take that risk.
So, after careful consideration, they chose today’s method: contacting only the person in charge here and sending them the coordinates.
"Something’s not right inside. It looks like they’re moving out." Sean Hughes nimbly climbed a tree, looked at the camp through the binoculars hanging from his chest, and immediately noticed something was off.
A large truck was parked in the farthest corner, with many people moving back and forth, loading things onto it.
But the people carrying the items walked strangely, as if something was tied between their feet.
Sean Hughes quickly figured it out. They were captives seized by this group. Their feet were likely shackled with iron chains to prevent them from escaping.
"Take a closer look and describe it to me. I need to report back to HQ." Heath Hale frowned, telling Sean Hughes to look again.
Then, as one spoke, the other relayed, reporting the situation to Chief Lowe.
"They must have realized something is wrong. We have to speed up, or all this will be for nothing." Chief Lowe waved to another area and briefly explained the situation to the armed police unit.
Besides the possibility that news from Varden had reached them and put them on alert, there was another possibility: someone was watching this area.
Whichever it was, they needed to heighten their vigilance and pick up the pace.
Soon, another well-equipped squad broke off from the main force, heading toward the destination via a faster, more covert route.
"Haven’t they arrived yet? That truck is almost full and about to leave." Sean Hughes slid down from the tree, his expression anxious.
If not for the concern that a rash charge would compromise the mission, Sean Hughes would have stormed in with his weapon raised.
Heath Hale shook his head. Judging by the distance on the locator, there was still a short way to go. Even at top speed, it would take them over ten minutes.
In that time, this group could easily leave with the most important evidence!
Just then, a RUSTLING sound came from behind them.
Sean Hughes and Heath Hale almost instantly moved to shield Zoe Sawyer, their eyes vigilant. They backed up, preparing to hide Zoe behind the tree.
At the same time, Heath Hale and Sean Hughes deftly chambered rounds in their pistols, aiming them at the tall grass.
If what emerged was foe and not friend, they would fire without hesitation.
While Heath Hale and Sean Hughes were on high alert, several camouflaged heads soon poked out, their bodies clad in familiar uniforms.
Seeing their defensive stance, the leader stopped in his tracks and didn’t advance further.
At the same time, he pressed his earpiece, quickly and quietly relaying the situation.
The next second, Chief Lowe’s voice came through Heath Hale’s earpiece. "Gentlemen, the people in front of you are an advance team we sent out covertly. If you need any help, don’t hesitate to ask."
After matching the information from Chief Lowe with the men in front of them, Zoe Sawyer and the other two finally relaxed.
Seeing what one of them was carrying on his back, Heath Hale’s eyes lit up. He pointed toward the enemy camp and asked, "Can you fire that?"
"Of course. It’s been cleared. In necessary situations, we can use this to ensure the safety of our teammates." The man unslung his equipment, stroking it fondly a couple of times.
’It’s a "necessary situation," after all.’
’And stopping the enemy from leaving with important materials is definitely necessary.’
’All we need to do is create some chaos to stall them until the main force arrives!’
Heath Hale instantly put it all together and relaxed considerably.
"Come on, the line of sight from here is perfect. See if you can stop that truck over there." Heath Hale led the man to a spot, his voice filled with anticipation.
The young soldier scanned the surroundings, and after getting a nod from his captain, he nodded without hesitation. "No problem. Leave it to me!"
Meanwhile, in a tent in the middle of the enemy camp, a man dressed distinctly different from those around him sat on a sofa with his legs crossed.
He was methodically polishing a gemstone that had been placed beside him.
"Boss, the important data and equipment are all packed. The vehicle is ready. We can leave anytime." A blond, blue-eyed man walked in from outside the tent, nodded to the other man, and reported on the situation.
"Good work, Tucker. Where are the cops now?" the boss asked, tossing the gemstone in his hand into a small box.
"According to our lookouts, they’re only a little over ten minutes out. At their current pace, it could be even sooner." Tucker tugged at his collar; the unfamiliar shirt and tie felt too tight. He looked at his employer as he spoke.
Ever since they learned their base in Varden had been destroyed, they had been packing up, preparing to abandon this temporary camp.
But they hadn’t expected the police to move so quickly, heading straight for them right away.
"Good work." The boss closed the box, then took out several sealed documents from a drawer and handed them to Tucker along with the box. "You take these two things and leave first. Especially these documents—they’re for our next deal.
Tucker, you must protect them at all costs!"
Tucker felt in his gut that something was wrong, but he couldn’t quite put his finger on it.
"I understand. I’ll protect these documents with my life!"
